Background: For medical and allied health students, bioscience knowledge underpins the successful scaffolding of learning in their developmental and advanced level units. Many of these students complete theory-based Bioscience units, followed by a unit in Pharmacology, which specifically requires knowledge of anatomy, physiology and microbiology. In general, studies of recall report relatively large losses over short retention intervals (months), which accumulate, but level off, for longer retention intervals (years) (Custers, 2010). However, there are no studies that specifically test the recall of bioscience knowledge by allied health students. Methods: We are tracking the recall of bioscience in nursing students prior to, and during, their Pharmacology unit. In each semester, students complete short, basic, knowledge-based MCQ quizzes on concepts from (i) the gastrointestinal system and (ii) fundamental microbiology. Students were given 5 days warning about the microbiology quizzes but were given no warning prior to the gastrointestinal system quiz. Performance in these quizzes was compared to individual student’s results in the final examination on these topics in the first semester of their degree. Results: At the start of the study, the nursing students performed better in the exam MCQs on the gastrointestinal system than on microbiology. In the exam, the students’ mean marks for the gastrointestinal system ranged from 69–83%, and this was successively reduced to 63%, 53% and 49% after 4, 9 and 16 months, respectively. The mean exam marks for microbiology was 48–58%, and this did not change significantly after 4 (63%), 9 (59%) or 16 months (47%). This suggests that warning the nursing students that they were to be quizzed on microbiology may have helped their recall. However, after 16 months regardless of the subject, the nursing students undertaking the Pharmacology unit recalled less than half of the bioscience quiz answers. Conclusions: Nursing students may not have the recall of bioscience necessary to study pharmacology, and this may limit their success in pharmacology. Reference: Custers, E. J. F. M. (2010). Background: Knowledge of the human biosciences is fundamental to the development of competent nurse practitioners (Smales, 2010) with the requisite knowledge and skills, necessary for high quality patient care and good patient outcomes (Logan and Angel, 2011). Many of these students study bioscience units which cover topics in anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and microbiology. Studies of science recall in general and medical education, report up to 33% loss of knowledge in the first year which declines to 50% in the subsequent year (Custers, 2010). Objectives: The objectives were to test the recall of bioscience knowledge by nursing students and to ascertain their perceptions of the testing. Questions explored: What would the results be for multiple choice questions in fundamental microbiology and gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology (A&P) undertaken by nursing students 4, 9 and 16 months after their first bioscience exam on these topics? Would pre-warning the students of a microbiology quiz and not a gastrointestinal A&P quiz affect the findings? How would the students respond to the testing when surveyed? Recall results: The nursing students performed better in the final exam on gastrointestinal A&P than on fundamental microbiology. There was an approximate 20% loss in knowledge of gastrointestinal A&P after 4 months and this did not change significantly over the next 12 months. Although there was an improved performance in microbiology quizzes after 4 months, there was no significant difference in results over the next 12 months. Survey results: More than 50% of students thought the testing helped them focus for the lectures and made them aware they had some pre-knowledge of the lecture topics. Discussion: Although there was a loss of knowledge of gastrointestinal A&P, it appears that warning the students about the microbiology quiz may have helped their recall. The majority of students valued the testing as a useful learning exercise. References: Custers, E. J. F. M. (2010). Long-term retention of basic science knowledge: a review study. Silverstone’s Why Study the Media? (hereafter WSM) is a dif cult book to review, especially in such a short space. The content spans millennia of theoretical, analytical and historical perspectives on our media, but is none the less entirely contemporary and relevant in its focus. Silverstone’s perspective is at times elusive because the book sets out, successfully I think, to answer the question posed in the title. But it does so by raising major questions in media studies, important questions, in a way that does not imply quick and easy answers.

This paper presents an extensive review on the services, six-sigma, and application of six-sigma in services. In order to improve service quality focus on service process is necessary. Six-sigma is a philosophy which also concentrates on the improvement of process. So, six-sigma if properly applied can be useful for services. This study focuses on the application aspect of six-sigma to wider range of services. The wider applicability of six-sigma depends on identification of key performance indicators(KPIs) for different types of service processes. A case study is conducted in call center services to identify, analyze and compare critical to quality characteristics (CTQs) and KPIs with other types of services available in literature. This study will be helpful to both practitioners and researchers.

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is a highly integral methodology in product development, starting from the concept development phase, with the aim of improving manufacturing productivity. It is used to reduce manufacturing costs in complex production environments, while maintaining product quality. While Design for Assembly (DFA) is focusing on elimination or combination of parts with other components, which in most cases relates to performing a function and manufacture operation in a simpler way, DFM is following a more holistic approach. Common consideration for DFM are standard components, manufacturing tool inventory and capability, materials compatibility with production process, part handling, logistics, tool wear and process optimization, quality control complexity or Poka-Yoke design. During DFM, the considerable background work required for the conceptual phase is compensated for by a shortening of later development phases. Current DFM projects normally apply an iterative step-by-step approach and eventually transfer to the developer team. The study is introducing a new, knowledge based approach to DFM, eliminating steps of DFM, and showing implications on the work process. Furthermore, a concurrent engineering process via transparent interface between the manufacturing engineering and product development systems is brought forward.

Detailed knowledge of the past history of an active volcano is crucial for the prediction of the timing, frequency and style of future eruptions, and for the identification of potentially at-risk areas. Subaerial volcanic stratigraphies are often incomplete, due to a lack of exposure, or burial and erosion from subsequent eruptions. However, many volcanic eruptions produce widely-dispersed explosive products that are frequently deposited as tephra layers in the sea. Cores of marine sediment therefore have the potential to provide more complete volcanic stratigraphies, at least for explosive eruptions. Nevertheless, problems such as bioturbation and dispersal by currents affect the preservation and subsequent detection of marine tephra deposits. Consequently, cryptotephras, in which tephra grains are not sufficiently concentrated to form layers that are visible to the naked eye, may be the only record of many explosive eruptions. Additionally, thin, reworked deposits of volcanic clasts transported by floods and landslides, or during pyroclastic density currents may be incorrectly interpreted as tephra fallout layers, leading to the construction of inaccurate records of volcanism. This work uses samples from the volcanic island of Montserrat as a case study to test different techniques for generating volcanic eruption records from marine sediment cores, with a particular relevance to cores sampled in relatively proximal settings (i.e. tens of kilometres from the volcanic source) where volcaniclastic material may form a pervasive component of the sedimentary sequence. Visible volcaniclastic deposits identified by sedimentological logging were used to test the effectiveness of potential alternative volcaniclastic-deposit detection techniques, including point counting of grain types (component analysis), glass or mineral chemistry, colour spectrophotometry, grain size measurements, XRF core scanning, magnetic susceptibility and X-radiography. This study demonstrates that a set of time-efficient, non-destructive and high-spatial-resolution analyses (e.g. XRF core-scanning and magnetic susceptibility) can be used effectively to detect potential cryptotephra horizons in marine sediment cores. Once these horizons have been sampled, microscope image analysis of volcaniclastic grains can be used successfully to discriminate between tephra fallout deposits and other volcaniclastic deposits, by using specific criteria related to clast morphology and sorting. Standard practice should be employed when analysing marine sediment cores to accurately identify both visible tephra and cryptotephra deposits, and to distinguish fallout deposits from other volcaniclastic deposits.

Background Despite the widely recognised importance of sustainable health care systems, health services research remains generally underfunded in Australia. The Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI) is funding health services research in the state of Queensland. AusHSI has developed a streamlined protocol for applying and awarding funding using a short proposal and accelerated peer review. Method An observational study of proposals for four health services research funding rounds from May 2012 to November 2013. A short proposal of less than 1,200 words was submitted using a secure web-based portal. The primary outcome measures are: time spent preparing proposals; a simplified scoring of grant proposals (reject, revise or accept for interview) by a scientific review committee; and progressing from submission to funding outcomes within eight weeks. Proposals outside of health services research were deemed ineligible. Results There were 228 eligible proposals across 4 funding rounds: from 29% to 79% were shortlisted and 9% to 32% were accepted for interview. Success rates increased from 6% (in 2012) to 16% (in 2013) of eligible proposals. Applicants were notified of the outcomes within two weeks from the interview; which was a maximum of eight weeks after the submission deadline. Applicants spent 7 days on average preparing their proposal. Applicants with a ranking of reject or revise received written feedback and suggested improvements for their proposals, and resubmissions composed one third of the 2013 rounds. Conclusions The AusHSI funding scheme is a streamlined application process that has simplified the process of allocating health services research funding for both applicants and peer reviewers. The AusHSI process has minimised the time from submission to notification of funding outcomes.

Objective: To prospectively test two simplified peer review processes, estimate the agreement between the simplified and official processes, and compare the costs of peer review. Design, participants and setting: A prospective parallel study of Project Grant proposals submitted in 2013 to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia. The official funding outcomes were compared with two simplified processes using proposals in Public Health and Basic Science. The two simplified processes were: panels of 7 reviewers who met face-to-face and reviewed only the nine-page research proposal and track record (simplified panel); and 2 reviewers who independently reviewed only the nine-page research proposal (journal panel). The official process used panels of 12 reviewers who met face-to-face and reviewed longer proposals of around 100 pages. We compared the funding outcomes of 72 proposals that were peer reviewed by the simplified and official processes. Main outcome measures: Agreement in funding outcomes; costs of peer review based on reviewers’ time and travel costs. Results: The agreement between the simplified and official panels (72%, 95% CI 61% to 82%), and the journal and official panels (74%, 62% to 83%), was just below the acceptable threshold of 75%. Using the simplified processes would save $A2.1–$A4.9 million per year in peer review costs. Conclusions: Using shorter applications and simpler peer review processes gave reasonable agreement with the more complex official process. Simplified processes save time and money that could be reallocated to actual research. Funding agencies should consider streamlining their application processes.

Process modeling can be regarded as the currently most popular form of conceptual modeling. Research evidence illustrates how process modeling is applied across the different information system life cycle phases for a range of different applications, such as configuration of Enterprise Systems, workflow management, or software development. However, a detailed discussion of critical factors of the quality of process models is still missing. This paper proposes a framework consisting of six quality factors, which is derived from a comprehensive literature review. It then presents in a case study, a utility provider, who had designed various business process models for the selection of an Enterprise System. The paper summarizes potential means of conducting a successful process modeling initiative and evaluates the described modeling approach within the Guidelines of Modeling (GoM) framework. An outlook shows the potential lessons learnt, and concludes with insights to the next phases of this study.

The dynamic interaction between building systems and external climate is extremely complex, involving a large number of difficult-to-predict variables. In order to study the impact of global warming on the built environment, the use of building simulation techniques together with forecast weather data are often necessary. Since all building simulation programs require hourly meteorological input data for their thermal comfort and energy evaluation, the provision of suitable weather data becomes critical. Based on a review of the existing weather data generation models, this paper presents an effective method to generate approximate future hourly weather data suitable for the study of the impact of global warming. Depending on the level of information available for the prediction of future weather condition, it is shown that either the method of retaining to current level, constant offset method or diurnal modelling method may be used to generate the future hourly variation of an individual weather parameter. An example of the application of this method to the different global warming scenarios in Australia is presented. Since there is no reliable projection of possible change in air humidity, solar radiation or wind characters, as a first approximation, these parameters have been assumed to remain at the current level. A sensitivity test of their impact on the building energy performance shows that there is generally a good linear relationship between building cooling load and the changes of weather variables of solar radiation, relative humidity or wind speed.
