Similarity solutions for flow over an impermeable, non-linearly (quadratic) stretching sheet were studied recently by Raptis and Perdikis (Int. J. Non-linear Mech. 41 (2006) 527–529) using a stream function of the form ψ=αxf(η)+βx2g(η). A fundamental error in their problem formulation is pointed out. On correction, it is shown that similarity solutions do not exist for this choice of ψ

his paper formulates an edge-based smoothed conforming point interpolation method (ES-CPIM) for solid mechanics using the triangular background cells. In the ES-CPIM, a technique for obtaining conforming PIM shape functions (CPIM) is used to create a continuous and piecewise quadratic displacement field over the whole problem domain. The smoothed strain field is then obtained through smoothing operation over each smoothing domain associated with edges of the triangular background cells. The generalized smoothed Galerkin weak form is then used to create the discretized system equations. Numerical studies have demonstrated that the ES-CPIM possesses the following good properties: (1) ES-CPIM creates conforming quadratic PIM shape functions, and can always pass the standard patch test; (2) ES-CPIM produces a quadratic displacement field without introducing any additional degrees of freedom; (3) The results of ES-CPIM are generally of very high accuracy.

The discovery of mesoporous molecular sieves, MCM-41, which possesses a regular hexagonal array of uniform pore openings, aroused a worldwide resurgence in this field. This is not only because it has brought about a series of novel mesoporous materials with various compositions which may find applications in catalysis, adsorption, and guest-host chemistry, but also it has opened a new avenue for creating zeotype materials. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the field of MCM-41. Beginning with the chemistry of surfactant/silicate solutions, progresses made in design and synthesis, characterization, and physicochemical property evaluation of MCM-41 are enumerated. Proposed formation mechanisms are presented, discussed, and identified. Potential applications are reviewed and projected. More than 100 references are cited.

In this paper, a method of thrust allocation based on a linearly constrained quadratic cost function capable of handling rotating azimuths is presented. The problem formulation accounts for magnitude and rate constraints on both thruster forces and azimuth angles. The advantage of this formulation is that the solution can be found with a finite number of iterations for each time step. Experiments with a model ship are used to validate the thrust allocation system.

In the commercial food industry, demonstration of microbiological safety and thermal process equivalence often involves a mathematical framework that assumes log-linear inactivation kinetics and invokes concepts of decimal reduction time (DT), z values, and accumulated lethality. However, many microbes, particularly spores, exhibit inactivation kinetics that are not log linear. This has led to alternative modeling approaches, such as the biphasic and Weibull models, that relax strong log-linear assumptions. Using a statistical framework, we developed a novel log-quadratic model, which approximates the biphasic and Weibull models and provides additional physiological interpretability. As a statistical linear model, the log-quadratic model is relatively simple to fit and straightforwardly provides confidence intervals for its fitted values. It allows a DT-like value to be derived, even from data that exhibit obvious "tailing." We also showed how existing models of non-log-linear microbial inactivation, such as the Weibull model, can fit into a statistical linear model framework that dramatically simplifies their solution. We applied the log-quadratic model to thermal inactivation data for the spore-forming bacterium Clostridium botulinum and evaluated its merits compared with those of popular previously described approaches. The log-quadratic model was used as the basis of a secondary model that can capture the dependence of microbial inactivation kinetics on temperature. This model, in turn, was linked to models of spore inactivation of Sapru et al. and Rodriguez et al. that posit different physiological states for spores within a population. We believe that the log-quadratic model provides a useful framework in which to test vitalistic and mechanistic hypotheses of inactivation by thermal and other processes. A modularized battery system with Double Star Chopper Cell (DSCC) based modular multilevel converter is proposed for a battery operated electric vehicle (EV). A design concept for the modularized battery micro-packs for DSCC is described. Multidimensional pulse width modulation (MD-PWM) with integrated inter-module SoC balancing and fault tolerant control is proposed and explained. The DSCC can be operated either as an inverter to drive the EV motor or as a synchronous rectifier connected to external three phase power supply equipment for charging the battery micro-packs. The methods of operation as inverter and synchronous rectifier with integrated inter-module SoC balancing and fault tolerant control are discussed. The proposed system operation as inverter and synchronous rectifier are verified through simulations and the results are presented.
