Sitooter-i

As part of the process of renewing its City Centre Master Plan, Brisbane City Council and its CBD are hosting an Ideas Fiesta between April 11th- 3rd May 2013. It hopes to generate new ideas, showcase design concepts, and stimulate interest in imagining the future of the city centre. Events will be held in a variety of city outdoor spaces, streets, laneways and venues to identify catalyst projects and explore design ideas for the city centre. In the City Botanic Gardens ‘Sunday reserved for you’ on 21st April and ‘A shot of green’ on Wednesday 24th April are some of the events planned and are the setting for innovative items of park furniture and other activities. A sitooterie (Scottish) is an outdoor space to sit… a place to enjoy nature. This Sitooter-i has been digitally designed for CNC fabrication with the ergonomics of reclining, lounging, just sitting or jumping around in mind. It was assembled by staff and students from Queensland University of Technology and is made from locally sourced plywood components which are easily dismantled for re-use elsewhere. But this Sitooter-i inspired by natural forms is also both physically and technologically interactive. Sensors record sound, light and temperature in their interactions with users. This data may be relayed as LED lights played in rhythm along frame edges or used by Brisbane City Council to assess frequency and style of use, perhaps revealing the effectiveness of its performance and the preferences of its users. Qaphqa : fresh cut 2013 Part 1

'Qaphqa' was an outdoor artwork exhibited in the forecourt of Brisbane’s Institute of Modern Art as part of Fresh Cut exhibition series. The work took the form of a three-storey-high series of stacked 'outhouses', the seat of each opening onto the cubicle below to form what the artist referred to as a 'long drop'. Assembled in untreated pine and plywood and festooned with mock-medieval ensigns and flags, the work included a flyer containing a poem by Jorge Luis Borges and was accompanied by a published catalogue.

The Instabooth

The InstaBooth is a portable demountable interactive installation for situated community engagement. Its aim is to give a voice to communities who can share their thoughts and ideas in an unstructured and playful way that combines digital technology with tangible materials. It is constructed from standard CNC-cut plywood stock and plans for its construction are available for others to download and use. Its modular design accommodates a range of bespoke interactive technologies, both analogue and digital, designed to facilitate the engagement process by providing means to present different materials and offer different ways to collect feedback. The appearance and interactions of the booth are designed to appeal to different demographics and foster an interactive discussion about a range of different topics such as change management, policy development, and urban planning.

Within the history of twentieth-century design, there are a number of well-known objects and stories that are invoked time and time again to capture a pivotal moment or summarize a much broader historical transition. For example, Marcel Breuer’s Model B3 chair is frequently used as a stand-in for the radical investigations of form and new industrial materials occurring at the Bauhaus in the mid-1920s. Similarly, Raymond Loewy’s streamlined pencil sharpener has become historical shorthand for the emergence of modern industrial design in the 1930s. And any discussion of the development of American postwar “organic design” seems incomplete without reference to Charles and Ray Eames’s molded plywood leg splint of 1942. Such objects and narratives are dear to historians of modern design. They are tangible, photogenic subjects that slot nicely into exhibitions, historical surveys, and coffee-table best sellers...
