Depolymerization of purified organosolv eucalyptus wood lignin by the heterogeneous catalysts, cobalt polyphosphate (CoP2O6) and calcium phosphate (β-CaP2O6) was investigated. A total syringol yield of 16.7% was achieved with β-CaP2O6 in a methanol/water (50/50, wt/wt) solvent system after depolymerization at 300 ºC for 1 h, showing selectivity of the catalyst.

Using density functional theory, we have investigated the catalytic properties of bimetallic complex catalysts PtlAum(CO)n (l + m = 2, n = 1–3) in the reduction of SO2 by CO. Due to the strong coupling between the C-2p and metal 5d orbitals, pre-adsorption of CO molecules on the PtlAum is found to be very effective in not only reducing the activation energy, but also preventing poisoning by sulfur. As result of the coupling, the metal 5d band is broadened and down-shifted, and charge is transferred from the CO molecules to the PtlAum. As SO2 is adsorbed on the catalyst, partial charge moves to the anti-σ bonding orbitals between S and O in SO2, weakening the S–O bond strength. This effect is enhanced by pre-adsorbing up to three CO molecules, therefore the S–O bonds become vulnerable. Our results revealed the mechanism of the excellent catalytic properties of the bimetallic complex catalysts.

Insight into the unique structure of layered double hydroxides has been obtained using a combination of X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. Indium containing hydrotalcites of formula Mg4In2(CO3)(OH)12•4H2O (2:1 In-LDH) through to Mg8In2(CO3)(OH)18•4H2O (4:1 In-LDH) with variation in the Mg:In ratio have been successfully synthesised. The d(003) spacing varied from 7.83 Å for the 2:1 LDH to 8.15 Å for the 3:1 indium containing layered double hydroxide. Distinct mass loss steps attributed to dehydration, dehydroxylation and decarbonation are observed for the indium containing hydrotalcite. Dehydration occurs over the temperature range ambient to 205 °C. Dehydroxylation takes place in a series of steps over the 238 to 277 °C temperature range. Decarbonation occurs between 763 and 795 °C. The dehydroxylation and decarbonation steps depend upon the Mg:In ratio. The formation of indium containing hydrotalcites and their thermal activation provides a method for the synthesis of indium oxide based catalysts.

ZnO is a wide band-gap semiconductor that has several desirable properties for optoelectronic devices. With its large exciton binding energy of ~60 meV, ZnO is a promising candidate for high stability, room-temperature luminescent and lasing devices [1]. Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on ZnO homojunctions had been reported [2,3], while preparing stable p-type ZnO is still a challenge. An alternative way is to use other p-type semiconductors, ether inorganic or organic, to form heterojunctions with the naturally n-type ZnO. The crystal structure of wurtzite ZnO can be described as Zn and O atomic layers alternately stacked along the [0001] direction. Because of the fastest growth rate over the polar (0001) facet, ZnO crystals tend to grow into one-dimensional structures, such as nanowires and nanobelts. Since the first report of ZnO nanobelts in 2001 [4], ZnO nanostructures have been particularly studied for their potential applications in nano-sized devices. Various growth methods have been developed for growing ZnO nanostructures, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), Metal-organic CVD (MOCVD), aqueous growth and electrodeposition [5]. Based on the successful synthesis of ZnO nanowires/nanorods, various types of hybrid light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were made. Inorganic p-type semiconductors, such as GaN, Si and SiC, have been used as substrates to grown ZnO nanorods/nanowires for making LEDs. GaN is an ideal material that matches ZnO not only in the crystal structure but also in the energy band levels. However, to prepare Mg-doped p-GaN films via epitaxial growth is still costly. In comparison, the organic semiconductors are inexpensive and have many options to select, for a large variety of p-type polymer or small-molecule semiconductors are now commercially available. The organic semiconductor has the limitation of durability and environmental stability. Many polymer semiconductors are susceptible to damage by humidity or mere exposure to oxygen in the air. Also the carrier mobilities of polymer semiconductors are generally lower than the inorganic semiconductors. However, the combination of polymer semiconductors and ZnO nanostructures opens the way for making flexible LEDs. There are few reports on the hybrid LEDs based on ZnO/polymer heterojunctions, some of them showed the characteristic UV electroluminescence (EL) of ZnO. This chapter reports recent progress of the hybrid LEDs based on ZnO nanowires and other inorganic/organic semiconductors. We provide an overview of the ZnO-nanowire-based hybrid LEDs from the perspectives of the device configuration, growth methods of ZnO nanowires and the selection of p-type semiconductors. Also the device performances and remaining issues are presented.

Carbon dioxide reforming of methane produces synthesis gas with a low hydrogen to carbon monoxide ratio, which is desirable for many industrial synthesis processes. This reaction also has very important environmental implications since both methane and carbon dioxide contribute to the greenhouse effect. Converting these gases into a valuable feedstock may significantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of CO2 and CH4. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review on the thermodynamics, catalyst selection and activity, reaction mechanism, and kinetics of this important reaction. Recently, research has centered on the development of catalysts and the feasible applications of this reaction in industry. Group VIII metals supported on oxides are found to be effective for this reason. However, carbon deposition causing catalyst deactivation is the major problem inhibiting the industrial application of the CO2/CH4 reaction. Ni-based catalysts impregnated on certain supports show carbon-free operation and thus attract much attention. To develop an effective catalyst for CO2 reforming of CH4 and accelerate the commercial application of the reaction, the following are identified to be the most important areas for future work: (1) selection of metal and support and studying the effect of their interaction on catalyst activity; (2) the effect of different promoter on catalyst activity; (3) the reaction mechanism and kinetics; and (4) pilot reactor performance and scale-up operation.

We report on the use of the hydrogen bond acceptor properties of some phosphorus-containing functional groups for the assembly of a series of [2]rotaxanes. Phosphinamides, and the homologous thio– and selenophosphinamides, act as hydrogen bond acceptors that, in conjunction with an appropriately positioned amide group on the thread, direct the assembly of amide-based macrocycles around the axle to form rotaxanes in up to 60% yields. Employing solely phosphorus-based functional groups as the hydrogen bond accepting groups on the thread, a bis(phosphinamide) template and a phosphine oxide-phosphinamide template afforded the corresponding rotaxanes in 18 and 15 % yields, respectively. X-Ray crystallography of the rotaxanes shows the presence of up to four intercomponent hydrogen bonds between the amide groups of the macrocycle and various hydrogen bond accepting groups on the thread, including rare examples of amide-to-phosphonamide, -thiophosphinamide and -selenophosphinamide groups. With a phosphine oxide-phosphinamide thread, the solid state structure of the rotaxane is remarkable, featuring no direct intercomponent hydrogen bonds but rather a hydrogen bond network involving water molecules that bridge the H-bonding groups of the macrocycle and thread through bifurcated hydrogen bonds. The incorporation of phosphorus-based functional groups into rotaxanes may prove useful for the development of molecular shuttles in which the macrocycle can be used to hinder or expose binding ligating sites for metal-based catalysts.

Background & aim To understand whether any change in gastric emptying (GE) is physiologically relevant, it is important to identify its variability. Information regarding the variability of GE in overweight and obese individuals is lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the reproducibility of GE in overweight and obese males. Methods Fifteen overweight and obese males [body mass index 30.3 (4.9) kg/m2] completed two identical GE tests 7 days apart. GE of a standard pancake breakfast was assessed by 13C-octanoic acid breath test. Data are presented as mean (±SD). Results There were no significant differences in GE between test days (half time (t1/2): 179 (15) and 176 (19 min), p = 0.56; lag time (tlag): 108 (14) and 104 (8) min, p = 0.26). Mean intra-individual coefficient of variation for t1/2 was 7.9% and tlag 7.5%. Based on these findings, to detect a treatment effect in a paired design with a power of 80% and α = 0.05, minimum mean effect sizes for t1/2 would need to be ≥14.4 min and tlag ≥ 8.1 min. Conclusions These data show that GE is reproducible in overweight and obese males and provide minimum mean effect sizes required to detect a hypothetical treatment effect in this population.

Objective: To examine whether Chinese studies of child sexual abuse (CSA) in the general population show lower prevalence rates than other international studies, and whether certain features of these studies may help to account for variation in estimates. Methods: A meta-analysis and meta-regression were conducted on 27 studies found in the English and Chinese language peer reviewed journals that involved general populations of students or residents, estimated CSA prior to age 18, and specified rates for males or females individually. Results: Estimates for Chinese females were lower than the international composites. For total CSA for females, the Chinese pooled estimate was 15.3% (95% CI = 12.6–18.0) based on the meta-analysis of 24 studies, lower than the international estimate (Stoltenborgh, van IJzendoorn, Euser, & Bakermans-Kranenburg, 2011) but not significantly. For contact CSA for females, the pooled estimate was 9.5% (95% CI = 7.5–11.5), based on 16 studies, significantly lower than the international prevalence. For penetrative CSA for females, the pooled estimate was 1% (95% CI = 0.7–1.3), based on 15 studies, significantly lower than the international estimate of 15.1%. Chinese men reported significantly less penetrative CSA but significantly more total CSA than international estimates; while contact CSA reported by Chinese and international males appeared to be roughly equivalent. Chinese CSA prevalence estimates were lower in studies from urban areas and non-mainland areas (Hong Kong and Taiwan), and in surveys with larger and probability samples, multiple sites, face-to-face interview method and when using less widely used instruments. Conclusions: The findings to date justify further research into possible cultural and sociological reasons for lower risk of contact and penetrative sexual abuse of girls and less penetrative abuse of boys in China. Future research should examine sociological explanations, including patterns of supervision, sexual socialization and attitudes related to male sexual prowess. Practice implications: The findings suggest that future general population studies in China should use well validated instruments, avoid face-to-face interview formats and be careful to maintain methodological standards when sampling large populations over multiple sites.

The notion of pedagogy for anyone in the teaching profession is innocuous. The term itself, is steeped in history but the details of the practice can be elusive. What does it mean for an academic to be embracing pedagogy? The problem is not limited to academics; most teachers baulk at the introduction of a pedagogic agenda and resist attempts to have them reflect on their classroom teaching practice, where ever that classroom might be constituted. This paper explores the application of a pedagogic model (Education Queensland, 2001) which was developed in the context of primary and secondary teaching and was part of a schooling agenda to improve pedagogy. As a teacher educator I introduced the model to classroom teachers (Hill, 2002) using an Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider and Srivastva 1987) model and at the same time applied the model to my own pedagogy as an academic. Despite being instigated as a model for classroom teachers, I found through my own practitioner investigation that the model was useful for exploring my own pedagogy as a university academic (Hill, 2007, 2008). The structure of Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts that show activity for direct NO decomposition and selective catalytic reduction of NOx by hydrocarbons has been investigated by a multitude of modern surface analysis and spectroscopy techniques including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A series of four catalysts were prepared by exchange of Na-ZSM-5 with dilute copper acetate, and the copper loading was controlled by variation of the solution pH. Underexchanged catalysts contained isolated Cu2+OH-(H2O) species and as the copper loading was increased Cu2+ ions incorporated into the zeolite lattice appeared. The sites at which the latter two copper species were located were fundamentally different. The Cu2+OH-(H2O) moieties were bound to two lattice oxygen ions and associated with one aluminum framework species. In contrast, the Cu2+ ions were probably bound to four lattice oxygen ions and associated with two framework aluminum ions. Once the Cu-ZSM-5 samples attained high levels of exchange, the development of [Cu(μ-OH)2Cu]n2+OH-(H2O) species along with a small concentration of Cu(OH)2 was observed. On activation in helium to 500°C the Cu2+OH-(H2O) species transformed into Cu2+O- and Cu+ moieties, whereas the Cu2+ ions were apparently unaffected by this treatment (apart from the loss of ligated water molecules). Calcination of the precursors resulted in the formation of Cu2+O2- and a one-dimensional CuO species. Temperature-programmed desorption studies revealed that oxygen was removed from the latter two species at 407 and 575°C, respectively. © 1999 Academic Press.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of Oxaliplatin and 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU)/Leucovorin (LV) combination in ovarian cancer relapsing within 2 years of prior platinum-based chemotherapy in a phase II trial. Methods Eligible patients had at least one prior platinum-based chemotherapy regimen, elevated CA-125 ≥ 60 IU/l, radiological evidence of disease progression and adequate hepatic, renal and bone marrow function. Patients with raised CA-125 levels alone as marker of disease relapse were not eligible. Oxaliplatin (85 mg/m 2) was given on day 1, and 5-Fluorouracil (370 mg/m 2) and Leucovorin (30 mg) was given on days 1 and 8 of a 14-day cycle. Results Twenty-seven patients were enrolled. The median age was 57 years (range 42-74 years). The median platinum-free interval (PFI) was 5 months (range 0-17 months) with only 30% of patients being platinum sensitive (PFI > 6 months). Six patients (22%) had two prior regimens of chemotherapy. A total of 191 cycles were administered (median 7; range 2-12). All patients were evaluable for toxicity. The following grade 3/4 toxicities were noted: anemia 4%; neutropenia 15%; thrombocytopenia 11%; neurotoxicity 8%; lethargy 4%; diarrhea 4%; hypokalemia 11%; hypomagnesemia 11%. Among 27 enrolled patients, 20 patients were evaluable for response by WHO criteria and 25 patients were evaluable by Rustin's CA-125 criteria. The overall response rate (RR) by WHO criteria was 30% (95% CI: 15- 52) [three complete responses (CRs) and three partial responses (PRs)]. The CA-125 response rate was 56% (95% CI: 37-73). Significantly, a 25% (95% CI: 9-53) radiological and a 50% (95% CI: 28-72) CA-125 response rate were noted in platinum resistant patients (PFI < 6 months). The median response duration was 4 months (range 3-12) and the median overall survival was 10 months. Conclusion Oxaliplatin and 5-Fluorouracil/ Leucovorin combination has a good safety profile and is active in platinum-pretreated advanced epithelial ovarian cancer. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this paper is to compare the performances of the highly porous Nb2O5 Schottky based sensors formed using different catalytic metals for ethanol vapour sensing. The fabricated sensors consist of a fairly ordered nano-vein like porous Nb2O5 prepared via an elevated temperature anodization method. Subsequently, Pt, Pd and Au were sputtered as both Schottky contacts and catalysts for the comparative studies. These metals are chosen as they have large work functions in comparison to the electron affinity of the anodized Nb2O5. It is demonstrated that the device based on Pd/Nb2O5 Schottky contact has the highest sensitivity amongst the developed sensors. The sensing behaviors were studied in terms of the Schottky barrier height variations and properties of the metal catalysts.

We report the Heck coupling of 2-vinyl-4,5-dicyanoimidazole (vinazene) with selected di- and trihalo aromatics in an effort to prepare linear and branched electron-accepting conjugated materials for application in organic electronics. By selecting the suitable halo-aromatic moiety, it is possible to tune the HOMO - LUMO energy levels, absorption, and emission properties for a specific application. In this regard, materials with strong photoluminescence from blue → green → red are reported that may have potential application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Furthermore, derivatives with strong absorption in the visible spectrum, coupled with favorable HOMO-LUMO levels, have been used to prepare promising organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs) when combined with commercially available semiconducting donor polymers.

Background Improving hand hygiene among health care workers (HCWs) is the single most effective intervention to reduce health care associated infections in hospitals. Understanding the cognitive determinants of hand hygiene decisions for HCWs with the greatest patient contact (nurses) is essential to improve compliance. The aim of this study was to explore hospital-based nurses’ beliefs associated with performing hand hygiene guided by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 5 critical moments. Using the belief-base framework of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, we examined attitudinal, normative, and control beliefs underpinning nurses’ decisions to perform hand hygiene according to the recently implemented national guidelines. Methods Thematic content analysis of qualitative data from focus group discussions with hospital-based registered nurses from 5 wards across 3 hospitals in Queensland, Australia. Results Important advantages (protection of patient and self), disadvantages (time, hand damage), referents (supportive: patients, colleagues; unsupportive: some doctors), barriers (being too busy, emergency situations), and facilitators (accessibility of sinks/products, training, reminders) were identified. There was some equivocation regarding the relative importance of hand washing following contact with patient surroundings. Conclusions The belief base of the theory of planned behaviour provided a useful framework to explore systematically the underlying beliefs of nurses’ hand hygiene decisions according to the 5 critical moments, allowing comparisons with previous belief studies. A commitment to improve nurses’ hand hygiene practice across the 5 moments should focus on individual strategies to combat distraction from other duties, peer-based initiatives to foster a sense of shared responsibility, and management-driven solutions to tackle staffing and resource issues. Hand hygiene following touching a patient’s surroundings continues to be reported as the most neglected opportunity for compliance.

Two new star-burst compounds based on 1,3,5-triazine core and carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arms (1a and 1b) were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were investigated systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. Both compounds exhibit strong 1π–π⁎ transitions in the UV region and intense 1π–π⁎/intramolecular charge transfer (1ICT) absorption bands in the UV–vis region. Introducing the carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arm on the 1,3,5-triazine core causes a slight bathochromic shift and enhanced molar extinction coefficient of the 1π–π⁎/1ICT transition band. Both compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature and 77 K, which exhibit pronounced positive solvatochromic effect. The emitting state could be ascribed to 1ICT state in more polar solvent, and 1π–π⁎ state in low-polarity solvent. The high emission quantum yields (Φem=0.90~1.0) of 1a and 1b (in hexane and toluene) make them potential candidates as efficient light-emitting materials. The spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations indicate that the photophysical properties of these compounds can be tuned by the carbazole end-capped phenylene ethynylene arm, which would also be useful for rational design of photofunctional materials.
