Natural single-crystal specimens of the herderite-hydroxylherderite series from Brazil, with general formula CaBePO4(F,OH), were investigated by electron microprobe, Raman, infrared and near-infrared spectroscopies. The minerals occur as secondary products in granitic pegmatites. Herderite and hydroxylherderite minerals show extensive solid solution formation. The Raman spectra of hydroxylherderite are characterized by bands at around 985 and 998 cm-1, assigned to ν1 symmetric stretching mode of the HOPO33- and PO43- units. Raman bands at around 1085, 1128 and 1138 cm-1 are attributed to both the HOP and PO antisymmetric stretching vibrations. The set of Raman bands observed at 563, 568, 577, 598, 616 and 633 cm-1 are assigned to the ν4 out of plane bending modes of the PO4 and H2PO4 units. The OH Raman stretching vibrations of hydroxylherderite were observed ranging from 3626 cm-1 to 3609 cm-1. The infrared stretching vibrations of hydroxylherderites were observed between 3606 cm-1 and 3599 cm-1. By using a Libowitzky type function, hydrogen bond distances based upon the OH stretching bands were calculated. Characteristic NIR bands at around 6961 and 7054 cm-1 were assigned to the first overtone of the fundamental, whilst NIR bands at 10194 and 10329 cm-1 are assigned to the second overtone of the fundamental OH stretching vibration. Insight into the structure of the herderite-hydroxylherderite series is assessed by vibrational spectroscopy.

Raman and thermo-Raman spectroscopy have been applied to study the mineral formerly known as manasseite now simply renamed as hydrotalcite-2H Mg6Al2(OH)16[CO3]â4H2O. The mineral is a member of the homonymous hydrotalcite supergroup. Hydrogen bond distances calculated using a Libowitzky-type empirical function varied between 2.61 and 3.00 Ã. Stronger hydrogen bonds were formed by water units as compared to the hydroxyl units. Raman spectroscopy enabled the identification of bands attributed to the hydroxyl units. Two Raman bands at 1059 and 1064 cm-1 are assigned to symmetric stretching modes of the carbonate anion. Thermal treatment shifts these bands to higher wavenumbers indicating a change in the strength of the carbonate bonding.

In this paper, we have investigated on the natural wendwilsonite mineral with the formulae Ca2(Mg,Co)(AsO4)2â2(H2O). Raman spectroscopy complimented with infrared spectroscopy has been used to determine the molecular structure of the wendwilsonite arsenate mineral. A comparison is made with the roselite mineral group with formula Ca2B(AsO4)2â2H2O (where B may be Co, Fe2+, Mg, Mn, Ni, Zn). The Raman spectra of the arsenate related to tetrahedral arsenate clusters with stretching region shows strong differences between that of wendwilsonite and the roselite arsenate minerals which is attributed to the cation substitution for calcium in the structure. The Raman arsenate (AsO4)3∠stretching region shows strong differences between that of wendwilsonite and the roselite arsenate minerals which is attributed to the cation substitution for calcium in the structure. In the infrared spectra complexity exists of multiple to tetrahedral (AsO4)3∠clusters with antisymmetric stretching vibrations observed indicating a reduction of the tetrahedral symmetry. This loss of degeneracy is also reflected in the bending modes. Strong Raman bands around 450 cmâˆ1 are assigned to ν4 bending modes. Multiple bands in the 350â300 cmâˆ1 region assigned to ν2 bending modes provide evidence of symmetry reduction of the arsenate anion. Three broad bands for wendwilsonite found at 3332, 3119 and 3001 cmâˆ1 are assigned to OH stretching bands. By using a Libowitzky empirical equation, hydrogen bond distances of 2.65 and 2.75 à are estimated. Vibrational spectra enable the molecular structure of the wendwilsonite mineral to be determined and whilst similarities exist in the spectral patterns with the roselite mineral group, sufficient differences exist to be able to determine the identification of the minerals.

The complex [1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)ethane-[kappa]2P,P']diiodidonickel(II), [NiI2(C18H40P2] or (dtbpe-[kappa]2P)NiI2, [dtbpe is 1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)ethane], is bright blue-green in the solid state and in solution, but, contrary to the structure predicted for a blue or green nickel(II) bis(phosphine) complex, it is found to be close to square planar in the solid state. The solution structure is deduced to be similar, because the optical spectra measured in solution and in the solid state contain similar absorptions. In solution at room temperature, no 31P{1H} NMR resonance is observed, but the very small solid-state magnetic moment at temperatures down to 4 K indicates that the weak paramagnetism of this nickel(II) complex can be ascribed to temperature independent paramagnetism, and that the complex has no unpaired electrons. The red [1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)ethane-[kappa]2P,P']dichloridonickel(II), [NiCl2(C18H40P2] or (dtbpe-[kappa]2P)NiCl2, is very close to square planar and very weakly paramagnetic in the solid state and in solution, while the maroon [1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)ethane-[kappa]2P,P']dibromidonickel(II), [NiBr2(C18H40P2] or (dtbpe-[kappa]2P)NiBr2, is isostructural with the diiodide in the solid state, and displays paramagnetism intermediate between that of the dichloride and the diiodide in the solid state and in solution. Density functional calculations demonstrate that distortion from an ideal square plane for these complexes occurs on a flat potential energy surface. The calculations reproduce the observed structures and colours, and explain the trends observed for these and similar complexes. Although theoretical investigation identified magnetic-dipole-allowed excitations that are characteristic for temperature-independent paramagnetism (TIP), theory predicts the molecules to be diamagnetic.

The multianion mineral gartrellite PbCu(Fe3+,Cu)(AsO4)2(OH,H2O)2 has been studied by a combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The molecular structure of gartrellite is assessed. Gartrellite is one of the tsumcorite mineral group based upon arsenate and/or sulphate anions. Crystal symmetry is either triclinic in the case of an ordered occupation of two cationic sites, triclinic due to ordering of the H bonds in the case of species with two water molecules per formula unit, or monoclinic in the other cases. Characteristic Raman spectra of the mineral gartrellite enable the assignment of the bands to specific vibrational modes. These spectra are related to the structure of gartrellite. The position of the hydroxyl and water stretching vibrations are related to the strength of the hydrogen bond formed between the OH unit and the AsO3/4 anion.

Raman and infrared spectra of two well-defined fluellite samples, Al2(PO4)F2(OH)7H2O, from the Krásno near Horní Slavkov (Czech Republic) and Kapunda, South Australia (Australia) were studied and tentatively interpreted. Observed bands were assigned to the stretching and bending vibrations of phosphate tetrahedra, aluminum oxide/hydroxide/fluoride octahedra, water molecules and hydroxyl ions. Approximate OâHO hydrogen bond lengths were inferred from the Raman and infrared spectra.

Vibrational spectroscopy has been used to study the rare earth mineral churchite of formula (REE)(PO4)-â2H2O. The mineral contains a range of rare earth metals including yttrium depending on the locality. The Raman spectra of churchite-(REE) are characterized by an intense sharp band at 984 cm-1 assigned to the v1 (PO¾-) symmetric stretching mode. A lower intensity band observed at around 1067 cm-1 is attributed to the v3 (PO¾-) antisymmetric stretching mode. The (PO¾-) bending modes are observed at 497 cm-1 (v2) and 565 cm-1(v4). Raman bands at 649 and 681 cm-1 are assigned to water librational modes. Vibrational spectroscopy enables aspects of the structure of churchite to be ascertained.

alpha-Carboxylate radical anions are potential reactive intermediates in the free radical oxidation of biological molecules (e. g., fatty acids, peptides and proteins). We have synthesised well-defined alpha-carboxylate radical anions in the gas phase by UV laser photolysis of halogenated precursors in an ion-trap mass spectrometer. Reactions of isolated acetate ((center dot)CH(2)CO(2)) and 1-carboxylatobutyl (CH(3)CH(2)CH(2)(center dot)CHCO(2)(-)) radical anions with dioxygen yield carbonate (CO(3)(center dot-)) radical anions and this chemistry is shown to be a hallmark of oxidation in simple and alkyl-substituted cross-conjugated species. Previous solution phase studies have shown that C(alpha)-radicals in peptides, formed from free radical damage, combine with dioxygen to form peroxyl radicals that subsequently decompose into imine and keto acid products. Here, we demonstrate that a novel alternative pathway exists for two alpha-carboxylate C(alpha)-radical anions: the acetylglycinate radical anion (CH(3)C(O)NH(center dot)CHCO(2)(-)) and the model peptide radical anion, YGGFG(center dot-). Reaction of these radical anions with dioxygen results in concerted loss of carbon dioxide and hydroxyl radical. The reaction of the acetylglycinate radical anion with dioxygen reveals a two-stage process involving a slow, followed by a fast kinetic regime. Computational modelling suggests the reversible formation of the C(alpha) peroxyl radical facilitates proton transfer from the amide to the carboxylate group, a process reminiscent of, but distinctive from, classical proton-transfer catalysis. Interestingly, inclusion of this isomerization step in the RRKM/ME modelling of a G3SX level potential energy surface enables recapitulation of the experimentally observed two-stage kinetics.

Neutral and cationic \[C-2,P-2] were investigated by a combination of mass spectrometry and electronic structure calculations. The cationic \[C-2,P-2](.+) potential energy surface including all relevant minima, transition states and fragmentation products was calculated at the B3LYP/6-311G(3df) level of theory. The most stable structures are linear PCCP.+ 1(.+) (E-rel=0 kcal mol(-1)), a three-membered ring with exocyclic phosphorus c-(PCC)-P 2(.+) (E-rel = 40.8 kcal mol(-1)), and the rhombic isomer 3(.+) (E-rel = 24.9 kcal mol(-1)). All fragmentation channels are significantly higher in energy than any of the \[C-2,P-2](.+) isomers. Experimentally, \[C-2,P-2](.+) ions are generated under high vacuum conditions by electron ionization of two different precursors. The fragmentation of \[C-2,P-2](.+) on collisional activation is preceded by rearrangement reactions which obscure the structural connectivity of the ions. The existence and the high stability of neutral \[C-2,P-2] were proved by a neutralization-reionization (NR) experiment. Although an unambiguous structural assignment of the neutral species cannot be drawn, both theory and experiment suggest that the long-sought neutral, linear PCCP 1 is generated using the NR technique.

This paper considers the design of active control for car suspension systems using a particular form of energy-based control called Interconnection-and-Damping-Assignment Passivity-Based Control (IDA-PBC). This approach allows one to shape the kinetic and potential energy as well as modify the power flow among different components of the system by changing the interconnection and dissipative structure in a meaningful way. Different controller parameterisations are considered to design a class of controllers for active suspension systems.

This paper considers the manoeuvring of underactuated surface vessels. The control objective is to steer the vessel to reach a manifold which encloses a waypoint. A transformation of configuration variables and a potential field are used in a Port-Hamiltonian framework to design an energy-based controller. With the proposed controller, the geometric task associated with the manoeuvring problem depends on the desired potential energy (closed-loop) and the dynamic task depends on the total energy and damping. Therefore, guidance and motion control are addressed jointly, leading to model-energy-based trajectory generation.

Charge reversal (CR) and neutralization reionization (NR) experiments carried out on a 4-sector mass spectrometer demonstrate that isotopically labeled, linear C-4 anion rearranges upon collisional oxidation. The cations and neutrals formed in these experiments exhibit differing degrees of isotopic scrambling in their fragmentation patterns, indicative of (at least) partial isomerization of both states. Theoretical studies, employing the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ//B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory, favor conversion to the rhombic C-4 isomer on both cationic and neutral potential-energy surfaces with the rhombic structures predicted to be slightly more stable than the linear forms in each case. The combination of experiment with theory indicates that the elusive rhombic C-4 is formed as a cation and as a neutral following charge stripping of linear C-4(-)

Three different radical anions of the empirical formula C5H2 have been generated by negative ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry in the gas phase. The isomers C4CH2 â¢-, and HC5Hâ¢- have been synthesized by unequivocal routes and their connectivities confirmed by deuterium labeling, charge reversal, and neutralization reionization experiments. The results also provided evidence for the existence of neutrals C4CH2, C2CHC2H, and HC5H as stable species; this is the first reported observation of C2CHC2H. Ab initio calculations confirm these structures to be minima on the anion and neutral potential energy surfaces.

We report the synthesis, structure and properties of [2]rotaxanes prepared by the assembly of benzylic amide macrocycles around a series of amide and sulfide-/sulfoxide-/sulfone-containing threads. The efficacy of rotaxane formation is related to the hydrogen bond accepting properties of the various sulfur-containing functional groups in the thread, with the highest yields (up to 63% with a rigid vinyl spacer in the template site) obtained for sulfoxide rotaxanes. X-Ray crystallography of a sulfoxide rotaxane, 5, shows that the macrocycle adopts a highly symmetrical chair-like conformation in the solid state, with short hydrogen bonds between the macrocycle isophthalamide NH-protons and the amide carbonyl and sulfoxide S-O of the thread. In contrast, in the X-ray crystal structures of the analogous sulfide (4) and sulfone (6) rotaxanes the macrocycle adopts boat-like conformations with long intercomponent NHâ¦O=SO and NHâ¦S hydrogen bonds (in addition to several intercomponent amide-amide hydrogen bonds). Taking advantage of the different hydrogen bonding modes of the sulfur-based functional groups, a switchable molecular shuttle was prepared in which the oxidation level of sulfur determines the position of the macrocycle on the thread.

The mineral kidwellite, a hydrated hydroxy phosphate of ferric iron and sodium of approximate formula NaFe93+(PO4)6(OH)11â3H2O, has been studied using a combination of electron microscopy with EDX and vibrational spectroscopic techniques. Raman spectroscopy identifies an intense band at 978 cmâˆ1 and 1014 cmâˆ1. These bands are attributed to the PO43∠ν1 symmetric stretching mode. The ν3 antisymmetric stretching modes are observed by a large number of Raman bands. The series of Raman bands at 1034, 1050, 1063, 1082, 1129, 1144 and 1188 cmâˆ1 are attributed to the ν3 antisymmetric stretching bands of the PO43∠and HOPO32∠units. The observation of these multiple Raman bands in the symmetric and antisymmetric stretching region gives credence to the concept that both phosphate and hydrogen phosphate units exist in the structure of kidwellite. The series of Raman bands at 557, 570, 588, 602, 631, 644 and 653 cmâˆ1are assigned to the PO43∠ν2 bending modes. The series of Raman bands at 405, 444, 453, 467, 490 and 500 cmâˆ1 are attributed to the PO43∠and HOPO32∠ν4 bending modes. The spectrum is quite broad but Raman bands may be resolved at 3122, 3231, 3356, 3466 and 3580 cmâˆ1. These bands are assigned to water stretching vibrational modes. The number and position of these bands suggests that water is in different molecular environments with differing hydrogen bond distances. Infrared bands at 3511 and 3359 cmâˆ1 are ascribed to the OH stretching vibration of the OH units. Very broad bands at 3022 and 3299 cmâˆ1 are attributed to the OH stretching vibrations of water. Vibrational spectroscopy offers insights into the molecular structure of the phosphate mineral kidwellite.
