The cryptographic community has, of late, shown much inventiveness in the creation of powerful new IBE-like primitives that go beyond the basic IBE notion and extend it in many new directions. Virtually all of these “super-IBE” schemes rely on bilinear pairings for their implementation, which they tend to use in a surprisingly small number of different ways: three of them as of this writing. What is interesting is that, among the three main frameworks that we know of so far, one has acted as a veritable magnet for the construction of many of these “generalized IBE” primitives, whereas the other two have not been nearly as fruitful in that respect. This refers to the Commutative Blinding framework defined by the Boneh-Boyen [Bscr ][Bscr ]1 IBE scheme from 2004. The aim of this chapter is to try to shed some light on this approach's popularity, first by comparing its key properties with those of the competing frameworks, and then by providing a number of examples that illustrate how those properties have been used.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an abstraction for the class of Exponent-Inversion IBE exemplified by the [Bscr ][Bscr ]2 and [Sscr ][Kscr ] schemes, and, on the basis of that abstraction, to show that those schemes do support interesting and useful extensions such as HIBE and ABE. Our results narrow, if not entirely close, the “flexibility gap” between the Exponent-Inversion and Commutative-Blinding IBE concepts.

John Dewey’s pragmatist aesthetics is used as a conceptual basis for designing new technologies that support staff-members’ mundane social interactions in an academic department. From this perspective, aesthetics is seen as a broader phenomenon that encompasses experiential aspects of staffmembers’ everyday lives and not only a look-&-feel aspect.

The article introduces a novel platform for conducting controlled and risk-free driving and traveling behavior studies, called Cyber-Physical System Simulator (CPSS). The key features of CPSS are: (1) simulation of multiuser immersive driving in a threedimensional (3D) virtual environment; (2) integration of traffic and communication simulators with human driving based on dedicated middleware; and (3) accessibility of multiuser driving simulator on popular software and hardware platforms. This combination of features allows us to easily collect large-scale data on interesting phenomena regarding the interaction between multiple user drivers, which is not possible with current single-user driving simulators. The core original contribution of this article is threefold: (1) we introduce a multiuser driving simulator based on DiVE, our original massively multiuser networked 3D virtual environment; (2) we introduce OpenV2X, a middleware for simulating vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure communication; and (3) we present two experiments based on our CPSS platform. The first experiment investigates the “rubbernecking” phenomenon, where a platoon of four user drivers experiences an accident in the oncoming direction of traffic. Second, we report on a pilot study about the effectiveness of a Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems advisory system.

The Surface Ocean Aerosol Production (SOAP) study was undertaken in February/March 2012 in the biologically active waters of the Chatham Rise, NZ. Aerosol hygroscopicity and volatility were examined with a volatility hygroscopicity tandem differential mobility analyser. These observations confirm results from other hygroscopicity-based studies that the dominant fraction of the observed remote marine particles were non-sea salt sulfates. Further observations are required to clarify the influences of seawater composition, meteorology and analysis techniques seasonally across different ocean basins.

One of the concerns about the use of Bluetooth MAC Scanner (BMS) data, especially from urban arterial, is the bias in the travel time estimates from multiple Bluetooth devices being transported by a vehicle. For instance, if a bus is transporting 20 passengers with Bluetooth equipped mobile phones, then the discovery of these mobile phones by BMS will be considered as 20 different vehicles, and the average travel time along the corridor estimated from the BMS data will be biased with the travel time from the bus. This paper integrates Bus Vehicle Identification system with BMS network to empirically evaluate such bias, if any. The paper also reports an interesting finding on the uniqueness of MAC IDs.

We identify the 10 major terrestrial and marine ecosystems in Australia most vulnerable to tipping points, in which modest environmental changes can cause disproportionately large changes in ecosystem properties. To accomplish this we independently surveyed the coauthors of this paper to produce a list of candidate ecosystems, and then refined this list during a 2-day workshop. The list includes (1) elevationally restricted mountain ecosystems, (2) tropical savannas, (3) coastal floodplains and wetlands, (4) coral reefs, (5) drier rainforests, (6) wetlands and floodplains in the Murray-Darling Basin, (7) the Mediterranean ecosystems of southwestern Australia, (8) offshore islands, (9) temperate eucalypt forests, and (10) salt marshes and mangroves. Some of these ecosystems are vulnerable to widespread phase-changes that could fundamentally alter ecosystem properties such as habitat structure, species composition, fire regimes, or carbon storage. Others appear susceptible to major changes across only part of their geographic range, whereas yet others are susceptible to a large-scale decline of key biotic components, such as small mammals or stream-dwelling amphibians. For each ecosystem we consider the intrinsic features and external drivers that render it susceptible to tipping points, and identify subtypes of the ecosystem that we deem to be especially vulnerable. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

The development of resistance to the antiestrogen tamoxifen occurs in a high percentage of initially responsive patients. We have developed a new model in which to investigate acquired resistance to triphenylethylenes. A stepwise in vitro selection of the hormone-independent human breast cancer variant MCF-7/LCC1 against 4-hydroxytamoxifen produced a stable resistant population designated MCF7/LCC2. MCF7/LCC2 cells retain levels of estrogen receptor expression comparable to the parental MCF7/LCC1 and MCF-7 cells. Progesterone receptor expression remains estrogen inducible in MCF7/LCC2 cells, although to levels significantly lower than observed in MCF-7 and MCF7/LCC1 cells. MCF7/ LCC2 cells form tumors in ovariectomized nude mice without estrogen supplementation, and these tumors are tamoxifen resistant but can be tstrogen stimulated. Significantly, MCF7/LCC2 cells have retained sensitivity to the steroidal antiestrogen ICI 182,780. These data suggest that some breast cancer patients who acquire resistance to tamoxifen may not develop cross-resistance to treatment with steroidal antiestrogens.

The level of 67 kDa laminin receptor (67LR) expression on breast and colon tumor cell surfaces was previously shown to be correlated with the capacity of tumor cells to metastasize. In the present work we investigate the effects of progestins and estrogen on the expression of 67LR in two sublines of the T47D human breast cancer cells: weakly tumorigenic, poorly invasive parental T47D cells and a highly tumorigenic, more invasive T47Dco subclone. Inmmunoblotting with an affinity purified antibody directed against a synthetic peptide recognizes the 67LR in these cells. 67LR expression in the T47Dco subclone is 5,5-fold higher than in their parental T47D cells. Treatment of T47D cells with 1 nM of the synthetic progestin R5020 results in a 4-fold increase in 67LR protein expression. Estrogen also induced 67LR expression, but only by 1.5-fold. The progestin-stimulated expression of the 67LR correlates with a 4.3-fold increase in attachment of T47D cells to laminin. A monoclonal antibody, mAb 13, directed against β1 integrin, completely blocks the attachment of T47D cells to fibronectin, only partially inhibits the attachment of T47D cells to laminin, and appears not to affect the progestin-stimulated laminin attachment of T47D cells. A new antiprogestin, ZK 112.993, significantly inhibits both progestin-stimulated 67LR expression and the increased attachment to laminin. These results suggest a possible role for progestin in mediating one of the multiple events thought to be important in metastasis of steroid receptor positive human breast cancer cells.

We have previously isolated a series of MCF-7 human breast cancer cell variants which no longer require estrogen-supplementation for tumor growth in nude mice (Clarke et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 86: 3649-3653, 1989). We now report that these hormone-independent and hormone-responsive variants (MIII, MCF7/LCC1) can invade locally from solid mammary fat pad tumors, and produce primary extensions on the surface of intraperitoneal structures including liver, pancreas, and diaphragm. Both lymphatic and hematogenous dissemination are observed, resulting in the establishing of pulmonary, bone, and renal metastases. The pattern of metastasis by MIII and MCF7/LCC1 cells closely resembles that frequently observed in breast cancer patients, and provides the first evidence of metastasis from MCF-7 cells growing in vivo without supplementary estrogen. The interexperimental incidence of metastases, and the time from cell inoculation to the appearance of metastatic disease are variable. The increased metastatic potential is not associated with an increase in either the level of laminin attachment, laminin receptor mRNA expression, or secreted type IV collagenolytic activity. We also did not detect a significant decrease in the steady-state mRNA levels of the metastasis inhibitor nm23 gene. However, when growing without estrogen in vitro, MCF7/LCC1 cells produce elevated levels of the estrogen-inducible cathepsin D enzyme.

A tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2)-independent mechanism for generating the first activational cleavage of pro-matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) was identified in membrane type-1 MMP (MT1-MMP)-transfected MCF-7 cells and confirmed in TIMP-2-deficient fibroblasts. In contrast, the second MMP-2-activational step was found to be TIMP-2 dependent in both systems. MMP-2 hemopexin C-terminal domain was found to be critical for the first step processing, confirming a need for membrane tethering. We propose that the intermediate species of MMP-2 forms the well-established trimolecular complex (MT1-MMP/TIMP-2/MMP-2) for further TIMP-2-dependent autocatalytic cleavage to the fully active species. This alternate mechanism may supplement the traditional TIMP-2-mediated first step mechanism.

In human breast cancer (HBC), as with many carcinoma systems, most matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are largely expressed by the stromal cells, whereas the tumour cells are relatively silent in MMP expression. To determine the tissue source of the most relevant MMPs, we xenografted HBC cell lines and HBC tissues into the mammary fat pad (MFP) or bone of immunocompromised mice and measured the expression of human and mouse MMP-2, -9, -11, -13, membrane-type-1 MMP (MT1-MMP), MT2-MMP and MT3-MMP by species-specific real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Our data confirm a stromal origin for most tumour-associated MMPs and indicate marked and consistent upregulation of stromal (mouse) MMP-13 and MT1-MMP in all xenografts studied, irrespective of implantation in the MFP or bone environments. In addition, we show increased expression of both human MMP-13 and human MT1-MMP by the MDA-MB-231 tumour cells grown in the MFP compared to in vitro production. MMP protein and activity data confirm the upregulation of MMP mRNA production and indicate an increase in the activated MMP-2 species as a result of tumour implantation. These data directly demonstrate tumour induction of MMP production by stromal cells in both the MFP and bone environments. These xenografts are a valuable means for examining in vivo production of MMPs and suggest that MMP-13 and MT1-MMP will be relevant targets for inhibiting breast cancer progression.

Human alterations to nutrient cycles1, 2 and herbivore communities3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are affecting global biodiversity dramatically2. Ecological theory predicts these changes should be strongly counteractive: nutrient addition drives plant species loss through intensified competition for light, whereas herbivores prevent competitive exclusion by increasing ground-level light, particularly in productive systems8, 9. Here we use experimental data spanning a globally relevant range of conditions to test the hypothesis that herbaceous plant species losses caused by eutrophication may be offset by increased light availability due to herbivory. This experiment, replicated in 40 grasslands on 6 continents, demonstrates that nutrients and herbivores can serve as counteracting forces to control local plant diversity through light limitation, independent of site productivity, soil nitrogen, herbivore type and climate. Nutrient addition consistently reduced local diversity through light limitation, and herbivory rescued diversity at sites where it alleviated light limitation. Thus, species loss from anthropogenic eutrophication can be ameliorated in grasslands where herbivory increases ground-level light.

We have isolated a series of sublines of the hormone-dependent MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line after selection both in vivo and in vitro for growth in the presence of subphysiological concentrations of estrogens. These sublines represent a model system for study of the processes leading to hormonal autonomy. The cells form growing tumors in ovariectomized athymic nude mice in the absence of estrogen supplementation but retain some responsivity to estrogen as determined by stimulation of the rate of tumor growth in vivo and by induction of progesterone receptor. An ovarian-independent but hormone-responsive phenotype may occur early in the natural progression to hormone-independent and unresponsive growth in breast cancer. We observed no change in the affinity or decrease in the level of expression of estrogen receptors and progesterone receptors among the sublines and the parental cells. Epidermal growth factor receptors are not overexpressed in ovarian-independent cells. Thus, altered hormone receptor expression may be a late event in the acquisition of a hormone-independent and unresponsive phenotype. Sublines isolated by in vivo but not in vitro selection are more invasive than the parental cells both in vivo and across an artificial basement membrane in vitro. Thus, as yet unknown tumor-host interactions may be important in the development of an invasive phenotype. Furthermore, acquisition of the ovarian-independent and invasive phenotypes can occur independently.

Traffic state estimation in an urban road network remains a challenge for traffic models and the question of how such a network performs remains a difficult one to answer for traffic operators. Lack of detailed traffic information has long restricted research in this area. The introduction of Bluetooth into the automotive world presented an alternative that has now developed to a stage where large-scale test-beds are becoming available, for traffic monitoring and model validation purposes. But how much confidence should we have in such data? This paper aims to give an overview of the usage of Bluetooth, primarily for the city-scale management of urban transport networks, and to encourage researchers and practitioners to take a more cautious look at what is currently understood as a mature technology for monitoring travellers in urban environments. We argue that the full value of this technology is yet to be realised, for the analytical accuracies peculiar to the data have still to be adequately resolved.
