Ba(6-3x)Nd(8+2x)Ti(18)O(54) (BNTl14) is a high permittivity dielectric with low temperature coefficient (Tcf). Low coefficient of change of dielectric permittivity with temperature (Tcf) is an unusual materials property. The research is aimed at discovering how atomic structure relates to temperature coefficient. Sub-â«ngström scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is used to measure mixed occupancy of Nd and Ba in atomic columns. It was expected that phase separation would occur to accommodate mixing of dissimilar ions. However no evidence of phase separation was found. There is a good image match between experiment and high angle annular dark field (HAADF) simulation. Vacancies and excess Ba ions appear to be randomly arranged on the available sites which would result in distortion of TiO6 octahedra. The low Tcf may arise from TiO6 distortion.

Carbon nanostructures (CNs) are amongst the most promising biorecognition nanomaterials due to their unprecedented optical, electrical and structural properties. As such, CNs may be harnessed to tackle the detrimental public health and socio-economic adversities associated with neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). In particular, CNs may be tailored for a specific determination of biomarkers indicative of NDs. However, the realization of such a biosensor represents a significant technological challenge in the uniform fabrication of CNs with outstanding qualities in order to facilitate a highly-sensitive detection of biomarkers suspended in complex biological environments. Notably, the versatility of plasma-based techniques for the synthesis and surface modification of CNs may be embraced to optimize the biorecognition performance and capabilities. This review surveys the recent advances in CN-based biosensors, and highlights the benefits of plasma-processing techniques to enable, enhance, and tailor the performance and optimize the fabrication of CNs, towards the construction of biosensors with unparalleled performance for the early diagnosis of NDs, via a plethora of energy-efficient, environmentally-benign, and inexpensive approaches.

Clinical utility of biodegradable magnesium implants is undermined by the untimely degradation of these materials in vivo. Their high corrosion rate leads to loss of mechanical integrity, periâimplant alkalization and localised accumulation of hydrogen gas. Biodegradable coatings were produced on pure magnesium using RF plasma polymerisation. A monoterpene alcohol with known anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties was used as a polymer precursor. The addition of the polymeric layer was found to reduce the degradation rate of magnesium in simulated body fluid. The in vitro studies indicated good cytocompatibility of non-adherent THPâ1 cells and mouse macrophage cells with the polymer, and the polymer coated sample. The viability of THPâ1 cells was significantly improved when in contact with polymer encapsulated magnesium compared to unmodified samples. Collectively, these results suggest plasma enhanced polymer encapsulation of magnesium as a suitable method to control degradation kinetics of this biomaterial.
