Brief dementia education training programs appear to be effective in improving knowledge about dementia and self-confidence in interacting with patients with dementia. It is recommended that brief dementia training sessions be provided on a regular, on-going basis, particularly in view of frequent staff changes in the acute hospital environment.

We have used scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis to determine the precise formula of plumbotsumite, a rare lead silicate mineral of formula Pb5(OH)10Si4O8. This study forms the first systematic study of plumbotsumite from the Bigadic deposits, Turkey. Vibrational spectroscopy was used to assess the molecular structure of plumbotsumite as the structure is not known. The mineral is characterized by sharp Raman bands at 1047, 1055 and 1060 cm−1 assigned to SiO stretching vibrational modes and sharp Raman bands at 673, 683 and 697 cm−1 assigned to OSiO bending modes. The observation of multiple bands offers support for a layered structure with variable SiO3 structural units. Little information may be obtained from the infrared spectra because of broad spectral profiles. Intense Raman bands at 3510, 3546 and 3620 cm−1 are ascribed to OH stretching modes. Evidence for the presence of water in the plumbotsumite structure was inferred from the infrared spectra.

Chambersite is a manganese borate mineral with formula: MnB7O13Cl and occurs as colorless crystals in the monoclinic pyramidal crystal system. Raman bands at 902, 920, 942 and 963 cm-1 are assigned to the BO stretching vibration of the B7O13 units. Raman bands at 1027, 1045, 1056, 1075 and 1091 cm-1 are attributed to the BCl in-plane bending modes. The intense infrared band at 866 cm-1 is assigned to the trigonal borate stretching modes. The Raman band at 660 cm-1 together with bands at 597, 642 679, 705 and 721 cm-1 are assigned to the trigonal and tetrahedral borate bending modes. The molecular structure of a natural chambersite has been assessed using vibrational spectroscopy.

Natural single-crystal specimens of althausite from Brazil, with general formula Mg2(PO4)(OH,F,O) were investigated by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. The mineral occurs as a secondary product in granitic pegmatites. The Raman spectrum of althausite is characterized by bands at 1020, 1033 and 1044 cm-1, assigned to ν1 symmetric stretching modes of the HOPO33- and PO43- units. Raman bands at around 1067, 1083 and 1138 cm-1 are attributed to both the HOP and PO antisymmetric stretching vibrations. The set of Raman bands observed at 575, 589 and 606 cm-1 are assigned to the ν4 out of plane bending modes of the PO4 and H2PO4 units. Raman bands at 439, 461, 475 and 503 cm-1 are attributed to the ν2 PO4 and H2PO4 bending modes. Strong Raman bands observed at 312, 346 cm-1 with shoulder bands at 361, 381 and 398 cm-1 are assigned to MgO stretching vibrations. No bands which are attributable to water were found. Vibrational spectroscopy enables aspects of the molecular structure of althausite to be assessed.

We have studied the mineral olmiite CaMn\[SiO3(OH)](OH) which forms a series with its calcium analogue poldevaartite CaCa\[SiO3(OH)](OH) using a range of techniques including scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis , Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Chemical analysis shows the mineral is pure and contains only calcium and manganese in the formula. Thermogravimetric analysis proves the mineral decomposes at 502°C with a mass loss of 8.8% compared with the theoretical mass loss of 8.737%. A strong Raman band at 853 cm-1 is assigned to the SiO stretching vibration of the SiO3(OH) units. Two Raman bands at 914 and 953 cm-1 are attributed to the antisymmetric vibrations.Two intense Raman bands observed at 3511 and 3550 cm-1 are assigned to the OH stretching vibration of the SiO3(OH) units. The observation of multiple OH bands supports the concept of the non-equivalence of the OH units. Vibrational spectroscopy enables a detailed assessment of the molecular structure of olmiite.

We have studied the mineral hydroboracite CaMg[B3O4(OH)3]2∙3H2O using electron microscopy and vibrational spectroscopy. Both tetrahedral and trigonal boron units are observed. The nominal resolution of the Raman spectrometer is of the order of 2 cm-1 and as such is sufficient enough to identify separate bands for the stretching bands of the two boron isotopes. The Raman band at 1039 cm-1 is assigned to BO stretching vibration. Raman bands at 1144, 1157, 1229, 1318 cm-1 are attributed to the BOH in-plane bending modes. Raman bands at 825 and 925 cm-1 are attributed to the antisymmetric stretching modes of tetrahedral boron. The sharp Raman peak at 925 cm-1 is from the 11-B component such a mode, then it should have a smaller 10-B satellite near (1.03)x(925) = 952 cm-1, and indeed a small peak at 955 is observed. Four sharp Raman bands observed at 3371, 3507, 3563 and 3632 cm-1 are attributed to the stretching vibrations of hydroxyl units. The broad Raman bands at 3076, 3138, 3255, 3384 and 3551 cm-1 are assigned to water stretching vibrations. Infrared bands at 3367, 3505, 3559 and 3631 cm-1are assigned to the stretching vibration of the hydroxyl units. Broad infrared bands at 3072 and 3254 cm-1 are assigned to water stretching vibrations. Infrared bands at 1318, 1349, 1371, 1383 cm-1 are assigned to the antisymmetric stretching vibrations of trigonal boron

Tunellite is a strontium borate mineral with formula: SrB6O9(OH)2∙3(H2O) and occurs as colorless crystals in the monoclinic pyramidal crystal system. An intense Raman band at 994 cm-1 was assigned to the BO stretching vibration of the B2O3 units. Raman bands at 1043, 1063, 1082 and 1113 cm-1 are attributed to the in-plane bending vibrations of trigonal boron. Sharp Raman bands observed at 464, 480, 523, 568 and 639 cm-1 are simply defined as trigonal and tetrahedral borate bending modes. The Raman spectrum clearly shows intense Raman bands at 3567 and 3614 cm-1, attributed to OH units. The molecular structure of a natural tunellite has been assessed by using vibrational spectroscopy.

This book analyses the structure, form and language of a selected number of international and national legal instruments and reviews how an illustrative range of international and national judicial institutions have responded to the issues before them and the processes of legal reasoning engaged by them in reaching their decisions. This involves a very detailed discussion of these primary sources of international and national environmental law with a view to determining their jurisprudential architecture and the processes of reasoning expected of those responsible for implementing these architectural arrangements. This book is concerned not with the effectiveness or the quality of an environmental legal system but only with its jurisprudential characteristics and their associated processes of legal reasoning.

Major imperfections in crosslinked polymers include loose or dangling chain ends that lower the crosslink d., thereby reducing elastic recovery and increasing the solvent swelling. These imperfections are hard to detect, quantify and control when the network is initiated by free radical reactions. As an alternative approach, the sol-gel synthesis of a model poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-2000) network is described using controlled amts. of bis- and mono-triethoxy silyl Pr urethane PEG precursors to give silsesquioxane (SSQ, R-SiO1.5) structures as crosslink junctions with a controlled no. of dangling chains. The effect of the no. of dangling chains on the structure and connectivity of the dried SSQ networks has been detd. by step-crystn. differential scanning calorimetry. The role that micelle formation plays in controlling the sol-gel PEG network connectivity has been studied by dynamic light scattering of the bis- and mono-triethoxy silyl precursors and the networks have been characterized by 29Si solid state NMR, sol fraction and swelling measurements. These show that the dangling chains will increase the mesh size and water uptake. Compared to other end-linked PEG hydrogels, the SSQ-crosslinked networks show a low sol fraction and high connectivity, which reduces solvent swelling, degree of crystallinity and the crystal transition temp. The increased degree of freedom in segment movement on the addn. of dangling chains in the SSQ-crosslinked network facilitates the packing process in crystn. of the dry network and, in the hydrogel, helps to accommodate more water mols. before reaching equil.

Using a sample of publicly listed firm in Korea from 2002 to 2006, this article examines the impact of board monitoring on firm value and productivity. We use outsider's attendance of board meetings as a proxy for board monitoring. Consistent with the commitment hypothesis, we find that outsider's attendance rate increases firm value, suggesting that attending board meeting itself is a strong signal that reflects outsider's intention to monitor insiders. While ownership of controlling shareholders negatively affects firm value, this relationship is not moderated by increased monitoring by outsiders. Our findings provide further evidence that the outside director system is less effective in chaebol-affiliated firms. Results also indicate that the effect of outsider's board monitoring activity on investor's valuation of the firm is greater than on productivity improvement of the firm. Our conclusions are robust for possible endogeneity in the relationship between firm value and board attendance by outside directors.

The Pink Women's Wellness Program Journal is a Queensland University of Technology (School of Nursing and Midwifery) initiative supported by IHBI, The Kim Walters Choices Program, Cancer Council Queensland and HOCA. The 12-week program provides participants recovering from acute breast cancer treatment a comprehensive set of information and tools designed to help get their lives back on track. Through the adoption of positive lifestyle habits, the focus of the program is the management of key side effects such as menopausal symptoms, increased risk of osteoporosis, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. This website brings a successful pilot program to an online medium, offering participants many advantages over the existing print journal. Some of the key services offered by the website version are: - Easy to use data capture tools to track exercise, BMI, nutrition and menopausal symptoms. - Real-time graphs illustrating participants' progress day by day and week by week. - The opportunity for participants to interact through simple social media tools. - Program related reminders, notifications and motivational messages.

The purpose of this investigation is to present an overview of roadside drug driving enforcement and detections in Queensland, Australia since the introduction of oral fluid screening. Drug driving is a problematic issue for road safety and investigations of the prevalence and impact of drug driving suggest that, in particular, the use of illicit drugs may increase a driver’s involvement in a road crash when compared to a driver who is drug free. In response to the potential increased crash involvement of drug impaired drivers, Australian police agencies have adopted the use of oral fluid analysis to detect the presence of illicit drugs in drivers. This paper describes the results of roadside drug testing for over 80,000 drivers in Queensland, Australia, from December 2007 to June 2012. It provides unique data on the prevalence of methamphetamine, cannabis and ecstasy in the screened population for the period. When prevalence rates are examined over time, drug driving detection rates have almost doubled from around 2.0% at the introduction of roadside testing operations to just under 4.0% in the latter years. The most common drug type detected was methamphetamine (40.8%) followed by cannabis (29.8%) and methamphetamine/cannabis combination (22.5%). By comparison, the rate of ecstasy detection was very low (1.7%). The data revealed a number of regional, age and gender patterns and variations of drug driving across the state. Younger drivers were more likely to test positive for cannabis whilst older drivers were more likely to test positive for methamphetamine. The overall characteristics of drivers who tested positive to the presence of at least one of the target illicit drugs are they are likely to be male, aged 30-39 years, be driving a car on Friday, Saturday or Sunday between 6:00PM and 6:00AM and to test positive for methamphetamine.

One in five Australian workers believes that work doesn’t fit well with their family and social commitments. Concurrently, organisations are recognising that to stay competitive they need policies and practices that support the multiple aspects of employees’ lives. Many employees work in group environments yet there is currently little group level work-life balance research. This paper proposes a new theoretical framework developed to understand the design of work groups to better facilitate work-life balance. This new framework focuses on task and relational job designs, group structures and processes and workplace culture.

Two transgenic callus lines of rice, stably expressing a β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene, were supertransformed with a set of constructs designed to silence the resident GUS gene. An inverted-repeat (i/r) GUS construct, designed to produce mRNA with self-complementarity, was much more effective than simple sense and antisense constructs at inducing silencing. Supertransforming rice calluses with a direct-repeat (d/r) construct, although not as effective as those with the i/r construct, was also substantially more effective in silencing the resident GUS gene than the simple sense and antisense constructs. DNA hybridisation analyses revealed that every callus line supertransformed with either simple sense or antisense constructs, and subsequently showing GUS silencing, had the silence-inducing transgenes integrated into the plant genome in inverted-repeat configurations. The silenced lines containing i/r and d/r constructs did not necessarily have inverted-repeat T-DNA insertions. There was significant methylation of the GUS sequences in most of the silenced lines but not in the unsilenced lines. However, demethylation treatment of silenced lines with 5-azacytidine did not reverse the post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) of GUS. Whereas the levels of RNA specific to the resident GUS gene were uniformly low in the silenced lines, RNA specific to the inducer transgenes accumulated to a substantial level, and the majority of the i/r RNA was unpolyadenylated. Altogether, these results suggest that both sense- and antisense-mediated gene suppression share a similar molecular basis, that unpolyadenylated RNA plays an important role in PTGS, and that methylation is not essential for PTGS.

In conjunction with: • Sessional Career Advancement Development: for Higher Degree Research students/ sessional staff who aspire to become academics provides guidance on developing an academic portfolio in teaching, research and service. And • Sessional Academic Success program providing ongoing, local support (see separate nomination). A critical factor in its success is its praxis approach. Theoretical principles are modelled. Eg, ‘active learning’ is explained and modelled through learning activities, which participants evaluate ‘on the fly’ against the criteria of learning, engagement and connection with peers. The topics ‘learning communities’ and ‘reflective practice’ are explored as a learning community–then applied in participants’ classes, with reflections shared in the next session. This produces a ‘meta-awareness’ of theory and principles, as they are explained, applied in practice, and critically analysed for their effectiveness in workshops.
