Many industry peak and professional bodies advocate students undertake professional work placements as a key work integrated learning (WIL) experience in accredited university degree courses. However, mismatched expectations and gaps in the way industry partners (IPs) are supported during these work placements can place these high-stake alliances at risk. A review of models and strategies supporting industry partners indicates many are contingent on the continued efforts of well-networked individuals in both universities and IP organisations to make these connections work. It is argued that whilst these individuals are highly valued they often end up representing a whole course or industry perspective, not just their area of expertise. Sustainable partnership principles and practices with shared responsibility across stakeholder groups are needed instead. This paper provides an overview of work placement approaches in the disciplines of business, engineering and urban development at an Australian, metropolitan university. Employing action research and participatory focus group methodologies, it gathers and articulates recommendations from associated IPs on practical suggestions and strategies to improve relationships and the resultant quality of placements.

This research project frames an emerging field fashion curation through a theoretical, historical, and practical enquiry. Recent decades have seen fashion curation grow rapidly as a form of praxis and an area of academic attention, predominantly in museums and universities. Within this context, two major models for conceptualising the role of the fashion curator have emerged: the institutional and the independent curator. This project proposes and applies a third model: the adjunct fashion curator. In developing this model my project seeks to move the growing dialogue around fashion curation away from exclusively focusing on the museum. By proposing a third curatorial model for fashion, this research draws on the past of fashion display and exhibition for its context, while simultaneously exploring the adjunct model through my curatorial practice. The impact of sites of display, the role of gender, and the relationship between art and fashion are explored as pivotal themes in the development of fashion curation and thus provide contextual grounding for the proposal of the adjunct curatorial model. Alongside a theoretical and historical account of fashion curation, I conduct a practice-led inquiry that explores these themes through five exhibition projects and one photographic series. I argue that the introduction and application of the adjunct model enables curatorial practitioners to sensitively work around the dominant museum model, and circumvent the divide between institutional and independent curation. Introducing the adjunct model allows the curator to develop personalised narratives relating to the experience of fashion and clothing as an exhibited phenomenon in a variety of institutional and non-institutional sites. Hence this research project contributes to a developing field by proposing a valuable and nuanced model for fashion curation.

One set of public institutions that has seen growing discussion about the transformative impact of new media technologies has been universities. The higher education sector, historically one of the more venerable and stable areas of public life, is now the subject of almost continuous speculation about whether it can continue in its current form during the 21st century. Digital media technologies are often seen as being at the forefront of such changes. It has been widely noted that moves towards a knowledge economy generates skills-biased technological change, that places a premium upon higher education qualifications, and that this earnings gap remains despite the continuing increase in the number of university graduates. As the demand for higher education continues to grow worldwide, there are new discussions about whether technologically-mediated education through new forms such as Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are broadening access to quality learning, or severing the vital connection between teacher and student seen as integral to the learning process. This paper critically appraises such debates in the context of early 21st century higher education. It will discuss ten drivers of change in higher education, many of which are related to themes discussed elsewhere in this book, such as the impact of social media, globalization, and a knowledge economy. It will also consider the issues raised in navigating such developments from the perspective of the Five Ps: practical issues; personal issues; pedagogical issues; policy issues; and philosophical issues. It also includes a critical evaluation of MOOCs from the point of view of their educational qualities. It will conclude with the observation that while universities will continue to play a significant and perhaps growing role in the economy, society and culture, the issues raised about what Clayton Christensen and Henry Eyring term the disruptive university (Christensen and Eyring 2011) are nonetheless pressing ones, and that cost and policy pressures in particular are likely to generate significant institutional transformations in higher education worldwide.

This study was undertaken to examine the influence that a set of Professional Development (PD) initiatives had on faculty use of Moodle, a well known Course Management System. The context of the study was a private language university just outside Tokyo, Japan. Specifically, it aimed to identify the way in which the PD initiatives adhered to professional development best practice criteria; how faculty members perceived the PD initiatives; what impact the PD initiatives had on faculty use of Moodle; and other variables that may have influenced faculty in their use of Moodle. The study utilised a mixed methods approach. Participants in the study were 42 teachers who worked at the university in the academic year 2008/9. The online survey consisted of 115 items, factored into 10 constructs. Data was collected through an online survey, semi-structured face-to-face interviews, post-workshop surveys, and a collection of textual artefacts. The quantitative data were analysed in SPSS, using descriptive statistics, Spearman's Rank Order correlation tests and a Kruskal-Wallis means test. The qualitative data was used to develop and expand findings and ideas. The results indicated that the PD initiatives adhered closely to criteria posited in technology-related professional development best practice criteria. Further, results from the online survey, post workshop surveys, and follow up face-to-face interviews indicated that while the PD initiatives that were implemented were positively perceived by faculty, they did not have the anticipated impact on Moodle use among faculty. Further results indicated that other variables, such as perceptions of Moodle, and institutional issues, had a considerable influence on Moodle use. The findings of the study further strengthened the idea that the five variables Everett Rogers lists in his Diffusion of Innovations model, including perceived attributes of an innovation; type of innovation decision; communication channels; nature of the social system; extent of change agents' promotion efforts, most influence the adoption of an innovation. However, the results also indicated that some of the variables in Rogers' DOI seem to have more of an influence than others, particularly the perceived attributes of an innovation variable. In addition, the findings of the study could serve to inform universities that have Course Management Systems (CMS), such as Moodle, about how to utilise them most efficiently and effectively. The findings could also help to inform universities about how to help faculty members acquire the skills necessary to incorporate CMSs into curricula and teaching practice. A limitation of this study was the use of a non-randomised sample, which could appear to have limited the generalisations of the findings to this particular Japanese context.

A Switch-Mode Assisted Linear Amplifier (SMALA) combines the high quality of a linear amplifier required for audio applications with the high efficiency of a switch-mode amplifier. The careful choice of current sense point and switch placement allows a simple non-isolated hysteresis current controller for the switch-mode section. This paper explains the extension of the hysteresis current controller for the control of a three level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) converter, with simulations as proof of concept. The NPC topology allows the use of lower voltage switches and lower switching frequencies to implement high power audio amplifiers using the SMALA topology.

There are many variables to consider in the design of an electric motor. However, meeting the performance requirements for an electric vehicle drive may cause a designer to loose focus on its typical operation and hence fail to optimise the motor in the region where it processes the most power. This paper investigates operating requirements of electric vehicle motor drives using the University concept vehicle as an example. The paper outlines a methodology for determining primary operating region of a vehicle drive. The methodology is applied to standard driving cycles that are commonly used in the design and testing of vehicles.

An alternative approach to digital PWM generation using an adder rather than a counter is presented. This offers several advantages. The resolution and gain of the pulse width modulator remain constant regardless of the module clock frequency and PWM output frequency. The PWM resolution also becomes fixed at the register width. Even at high PWM frequencies, the resolution remains high when averaged over a number of PWM cycles. An inherent dithering of the PWM waveform introduced over successive cycles blurs the switching spectra without distorting the modulating waveform. The technique also lends itself to easily generating several phase shifted PWM waveforms suitable for multilevel converter modulation.

The output harmonic quality of N series connected full-bridge dc-ac inverters is investigated. The inverters are pulse width modulated using a common reference signal but randomly phased carrier signals. Through analysis and simulation, probability distributions for inverter output harmonics and vector representations of N carrier phases are combined and assessed. It is concluded that a low total harmonic distortion is most likely to occur and will decrease further as N increases.

Permanent magnet (PM) motors utilising ironless stator structures have been incorporated into a wide variety of applications where high efficiency and stringent torque control are required. With recent developments in magnetic materials, improved design strategies, and power outputs of up to 40kW, PM motors have become an attractive candidate for traction drives in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. However, due to their large air gaps and ironless stators these motors can have inductances as low as 2H, imposing increased requirements on the converter to minimise current ripple. Multilevel converters with n cells can effectively increase the motor inductance by a factor of n2 and are an excellent approach to minimise the motor ripple current. Furthermore by indirectly coupling the outputs of each cell, improvements in converter input and cell ripple current can also be realised. This paper examines the issues in designing a high current indirectly coupled multilevel motor controller for an ironless BLDC traction drive and highlights the limitations of the common ladder core structure.

This paper presents the design process utilised for producing a two stage isolated Unity Power Factor (UPF) rectifier. The important yet less intuitive aspects of the design process are highlighted to aid in the simplification of designing a power converter which meets future UPF standards. Two converter designs are presented, a 200W converter utilising a critical conduction controller and a 750W converter based around a continuous conduction controller. Both designs presented were based on the requirements of an audio power amplifier, but the processes apply equally to a range of applications.

Parallel interleaved converters are finding more applications everyday, for example they are frequently used for VRMs on PC main boards mainly to obtain better transient response. Parallel interleaved converters can have their inductances uncoupled, directly coupled or inversely coupled, all of which have different applications with associated advantages and disadvantages. Coupled systems offer more control over converter features, such as ripple currents, inductance volume and transient response. To be able to gain an intuitive understanding of which type of parallel interleaved converter, what amount of coupling, what number of levels and how much inductance should be used for different applications a simple equivalent model is needed. As all phases of an interleaved converter are supposed to be identical, the equivalent model is nothing more than a separate inductance which is common to all phases. Without utilising this simplification the design of a coupled system is quite daunting. Being able to design a coupled system involves solving and understanding the RMS currents of the input, individual phase (or cell) and output. A procedure using this equivalent model and a small amount of modulo arithmetic is detailed.

This paper presents two efficiency models for the regenerative dynamometer to be built at the University of Queensland. The models incorporate an accurate accounting of the losses associated with the regenerative dynamometer and the battery modelling technique used. In addition to the models the cycle and instantaneous efficiencies were defined for a regenerative system that requires a desired torque output. The simulation of the models allowed the instantaneous and cycle efficiencies to be examined. The results show the intended dynamometer machine has significant efficiency draw backs but incorporating field winding control, the efficiency can be improved.

This paper presents a design technique of a fully regenerative dynamic dynamometer. It incorporates an energy storage system to absorb the energy variation due to dynamometer transients. This allows the minimum power electronics requirement at the grid to supply the losses. The simulation results of the full system over a driving cycle show the amount of energy required to complete a driving cycle, therefore the size of the energy storage system can be determined.

Many grid connected PV installations consist of a single series string of PV modules and a single DC-AC inverter. This efficiency of this topology can be enhanced with additional low power, low cost per panel converter modules. Most current flows directly in the series string which ensures high efficiency. However parallel Ck or buck-boost DC-DC converters connected across each adjacent pair of modules now support any desired current difference between series connected PV modules. Each converter shuffles the desired difference in PV module currents between two modules and so on up the string. Spice simulations show that even with poor efficiency, these modules can make a significant improvement to the overall power which can be recovered from partially shaded PV strings.

Interleaved switching and coupled inductors are proven methods for reducing DC-DC converter output ripple. This paper furthers discussions of these techniques to arrangements of many buck converters connected in parallel. The different possible arrangements of the DC-DC converters are discussed and criteria for fair comparisons between them are chosen. The effects of interleaved switching on ripple values are presented and subsequent effects of coupling the inductors is then investigated. A generalised solution for current ripple in n coupled inductor converters is presented. Simulations are used to verify the solution and characterise the converter and output ripple for all configurations.
