There is debate as to whether percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents or coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) is the best procedure for subjects with type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease requiring revascularization. There is some evidence that following these procedures there is less further revascularization with CABG than PCI in subjects with diabetes. Two recent studies; the FREEDOM (Future Revascularization Evaluation in patients with Diabetes mellitus: Optimal Management of Multivessel Disease) trial, and a trial using a real world diabetic population from a Registry, have shown that the benefits of CABG over PCI in subjects with type 2 diabetes extends to lower rates of death and myocardial infarct, in addition to lower rates of revascularization. However, the rates of stroke may be higher with CABG than PCI with drug-eluting stents in this population. Thus, if CABG is going to be preferred to PCI in subjects with type 2 diabetes and multivessel coronary disease, consideration should be given to how to reduce the rates of stroke with CABG.

Silver dressings have been widely used to successfully prevent burn wound infection and sepsis. However, a few case studies have reported the functional abnormality and failure of vital organs, possibly caused by silver deposits. The aim of this study was to investigate the serum silver level in the pediatric burn population and also in several internal organs in a porcine burn model after the application of Acticoat. A total of 125 blood samples were collected from 46 pediatric burn patients. Thirty-six patients with a mean of 13.4% TBSA burns had a mean peak serum silver level of 114 microg/L, whereas 10 patients with a mean of 1.85% TBSA burns had an undetectable level of silver (<5.4 microg/L). Overall, serum silver levels were closely related to burn sizes. However, the highest serum silver was 735 microg/L in a 15-month-old toddler with 10% TBSA burns and the second highest was 367 microg/L in a 3-year old with 28% TBSA burns. In a porcine model with 2% TBSA burns, the mean peak silver level was 38 microg/L at 2 to 3 weeks after application of Acticoat and was then significantly reduced to an almost undetectable level at 6 weeks. Of a total of four pigs, silver was detected in all four livers (1.413 microg/g) and all four hearts (0.342 microg/g), three of four kidneys (1.113 microg/g), and two of four brains (0.402 microg/g). This result demonstrated that although variable, the level of serum silver was positively associated with the size of burns, and significant amounts of silver were deposited in internal organs in pigs with only 2% TBSA burns, after application of Acticoat.

We report a new approach that uses the single beam Z-scan technique, to discriminate between excited state absorption (ESA) and two and three photon nonlinear absorption. By measuring the apparent delay or advance of the pulse in reaching the detector, the nonlinear absorption can be unambiguously identified as either instantaneous or transient. The simple method does not require a large range of input fluences or sophisticated pulse-probe experimental apparatus. The technique is easily extended to any absorption process dependent on pulse width and to nonlinear refraction measurements. We demonstrate in particular, that the large nonlinear absorption in ZnO nanocones when exposed to nanosecond 532 nm pulses, is due mostly to ESA, not pure two-photon absorption.

Platelet-derived microparticles (PMPs) which are produced during platelet activation contribute to coagulation1 and bind to traumatized endothelium in an animal model2. Such endothelial injury occurs during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), a procedure which restores the diameter of occluded coronary arteries using balloon inflations. However, re-occlusions subsequently develop in 20-25% of patients3, although this is limited by treatment with anti-platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor drugs such as abciximab4. However, abciximab only partially decreases the need for revascularisation5, and therefore other mechanisms appear to be involved. As platelet activation occurs during PTCA, it is likely that PMPs may be produced and contribute to restenosis. This study population consisted of 113 PTCA patients, of whom 38 received abciximab. Paired peripheral arterial blood samples were obtained from the PTCA sheath: 1) following heparinisation (baseline); and 2) subsequent to all vessel manipulation (post-PTCA). Blood was prepared with an anti-CD61 (glycoprotein IIIa) fluorescence conjugated antibody to identify PMPs using flow cytometry, and PMP results expressed as a percentage of all CD61 events. The level of PMPs increased significantly from baseline following PTCA in the without abciximab group (paired t test, P=0.019). However, there was no significant change in the level of PMPs following PTCA in patients who received abciximab. Baseline clinical characteristics between patient groups were similar, although patients administered abciximab had more complex PTCA procedures, such as increased balloon inflation pressures (ANOVA, P=0.0219). In this study, we have clearly demonstrated that the level of CD61-positive PMPs increased during PTCA. This trend has been demonstrated previously, although a low sample size prevented statistical significance being attained6. The results of our work also demonstrate that there was no increase in PMPs after PTCA with abiciximab treatment. The increased PMPs may adhere to traumatized endothelium, contributing to re-occlusion of the arteries, but this remains to be determined. References: (1) Holme PA, Brosstad F, Solum NO. We have used a tandem pair of supersonic nozzles to produce clean samples of CH3OO radicals in cryogenic matrices. One hyperthermal nozzle decomposes azomethane (CH3NNCH3) to generate intense pulses of CH3 radicals, While the second nozzle alternately fires a burst Of O-2/Ar at the 20 K matrix. The CH3/O-2/20 K argon radical sandwich acts to produce target methylperoxyl radicals: CH3 + O-2 --> CH3OO. The absorption spectra of the radicals are monitored with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. We report 10 of the 12 fundamental infrared bands of the methylperoxyl radical CH3OO, (X) over tilde (2)A", in an argon matrix at 20 K. The experimental frequencies (cm(-1)) and polarizations follow: the a' modes are 3032, 2957, 1448, 1410, 1180, 1109, 90, 492, while the a" modes are 3024 and 1434. We cannot detect the asymmetric CH3 rocking mode, nu(11), nor the torsion, nu(12). The infrared spectra of (CH3OO)-O-18-O-18, (CH3OO)-C-13, and CD3OO have been measured as well in order to determine the isotopic shifts. The experimental frequencies, {nu}, for the methylperoxyl radicals are compared to harmonic frequencies, {omega}, resulting from a UB3LYP/6-311G(d,p) electronic structure calculation. Linear dichroism spectra were measured with photooriented radical samples in order to establish the experimental polarizations of most vibrational bands. The methylperoxyl radical matrix frequencies listed above are within +/-2% of the gas-phase vibrational frequencies. A final set of vibrational frequencies for the H radical, are recommended. Portable water-filled barriers (PWFBs) are roadside appurtenances that are used to prevent errant vehicles from penetrating into temporary construction zones on roadways. A numerical model of the composite PWFB, consisting of a plastic shell, steel frame, water and foam was developed and validated against results from full scale experimental tests. This model can be extended to larger scale impact cases, specifically ones that include actual vehicle models. The cost-benefit of having a validated numerical model is significant and this allows the road barrier designer to conduct extensive tests via numerical simulations prior to standard impact tests Effects of foam cladding as additional energy absorption material in the PWFB was investigated. Different types of foam were treated and it was found that XPS foam was the most suitable foam type. Results from this study will aid PWFB designers in developing new generation of roadside structures which will provide enhanced road safety.

We have demonstrated the nonlinear absorption at 532 nm wavelength in an Au semi-continuous film (SF) resulting from smearing of the Fermi distribution and diffusion of conduction electrons into the substrate. The Au SF was irradiated by a pulsed laser with 8 ns pulse width at 532 nm in near resonance with the interband transition of the Au. We determined the temperature increase in the SF for different intensities by electrical measurement. We calculated the temperature increase by using a 1D heat transport equation; comparing the results of the calculation with measured values for the temperature increase, revealed the nonlinear absorption in the Au SF. We employed this deviation from linear behaviour to determine the nonlinear absorption coefficient.

Recent research in the rapidly emerging field of plasmonics has shown the potential to significantly enhance light trapping inside thin-film solar cells by using metallic nanoparticles. In this article it is demonstrated the plasmon enhancement of optical absorption in amorphous silicon solar cells by using silver nanoparticles. Based on the analysis of the higher-order surface plasmon modes, it is shown how spectral positions of the surface plasmons affect the plasmonic enhancement of thin-film solar cells. By using the predictive 3D modeling, we investigate the effect of the higher-order modes on that enhancement. Finally, we suggest how to maximize the light trapping and optical absorption in the thin-film cell by optimizing the nanoparticle array parameters, which in turn can be used to fine tune the corresponding surface plasmon modes.

Strong electromagnetic field enhancement that occurs under conditions of the surface plasmon excitation in metallic nanoparticles deposited on a semiconductor surface is a very efficient and promising tool for increasing the optical absorption within semiconductor solar cells and, hence, their photocurrent response. The enhancement of the optical absorption in thin-film silicon solar cells via the excitation of localized surface plasmons in spherical silver nanoparticles is investigated. Using the effective medium model, the effect of the nanoparticle size and the surface coverage on that enhancement is analyzed. The optimum configuration and the nanoparticle parameters leading to the maximum enhancement in the optical absorption and the photocurrent response in a single p-n junction silicon cell are obtained. The effect of coupling between the silicon layer and the surface plasmon fields on the efficiency of the above enhancement is quantified as well.

Platelet-derived microparticles that are produced during platelet activation are capable of adhesion and aggregation. Endothelial trauma that occurs during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) may support platelet-derived microparticle adhesion and contribute to development of restenosis. We have previously reported an increase in platelet-derived microparticles in peripheral arterial blood with angioplasty. This finding raised concerns regarding the role of plateletderived microparticles in restenosis, and therefore the aim of this study was to monitor levels in the coronary circulation. The study population consisted of 19 angioplasty patients. Paired coronary artery and sinus samples were obtained following heparinization, following contrast administration, and subsequent to all vessel manipulation. Platelet-derived microparticles were identified with an anti-CD61 (glycoprotein IIIa) fluorescence-conjugated antibody using flow cytometry. There was a significant decrease in arterial platelet-derived microparticles from heparinization to contrast administration (P 0.001), followed by a significant increase to the end of angioplasty (P 0.004). However, there was no significant change throughout the venous samples. These results indicate that the higher level of platelet-derived microparticles after angioplasty in arterial blood remained in the coronary circulation. Interestingly, levels of thrombin–antithrombin complexes did not rise during PTCA. This may have implications for the development of coronary restenosis post-PTCA, although this remains to be determined.

Platelet-derived microparticles that are produced during platelet activation bind to traumatized endothelium. Such endothelial injury occurs during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Approximately 20% of these patients subsequently develop restenosis, although this is improved by treatment with the anti-platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor drug abciximab. As platelet activation occurs during angioplasty, it is likely that platelet-derived microparticles may be produced and hence contribute to restenosis. This study population consisted of 113 angioplasty patients, of whom 38 received abciximab. Paired peripheral arterial blood samples were obtained following heparinization and subsequent to all vessel manipulation. Platelet-derived microparticles were identified using an anti-CD61 (glycoprotein IIIa) fluorescence-conjugated antibody and flow cytometry. Baseline clinical characteristics between patient groups were similar. The level of platelet-derived microparticles increased significantly following angioplasty in the group without abciximab (paired t test, P 0.019). However, there was no significant change in the level of platelet-derived microparticles following angioplasty in patients who received abciximab, despite requiring more complex angioplasty procedures. In this study, we have demonstrated that the level of platelet-derived microparticles increased during percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, with no such increase with abciximab treatment. The increased platelet-derived microparticles may adhere to traumatized endothelium, contributing to re-occlusion of the arteries, but this remains to be determined.

A series of Pt(II) diimine complexes bearing benzothiazolylfluorenyl (BTZ-F8), diphenylaminofluorenyl (NPh2- F8), or naphthalimidylfluorenyl (NI-F8) motifs on the bipyridyl or acetylide ligands (Pt-4−Pt-8), (i.e., {4,4′-bis[7-R1-F8-(≡)n-]bpy}Pt(7- R2-F8- ≡ -)2, where F8 = 9,9′-di(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene, bpy = 2,2′- bipyridine, Pt-4: R1 = R2 = BTZ, n = 0; Pt-5: R1 = BTZ, R2 = NI, n = 0; Pt-6: R1 = R2 = BTZ, n = 1; Pt-7: R1 = BTZ, R2 = NPh2, n = 1; Pt- 8: R1 = NPh2, R2 = BTZ, n = 1) were synthesized. Their ground-state and excited-state properties and reverse saturable absorption performances were systematically investigated. The influence of these motifs on the photophysics of the complexes was investigated by spectroscopic methods and simulated by time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The intense absorption bands below 410 nm for these complexes is assigned to predominantly 1π,π* transitions localized on either the bipyridine or the acetylide ligands; while the broad low-energy absorption bands between 420 and 575 nm are attributed to essentially 1MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer)/ 1LLCT (ligand-to-ligand charge transfer) transitions, likely mixed with some 1ILCT (intraligand charge transfer) transition for Pt-4−Pt-7, and predominantly 1ILCT transition admixing with minor 1MLCT/1LLCT characters for Pt-8. The different substituents on the acetylide and bipyridyl ligands, and the degrees of π-conjugation in the bipyridyl ligand influence both the 1π,π* and charge transfer transitions pronouncedly. All complexes are emissive at room temperature. Upon excitation at their respective absorption band maxima, Pt-4, Pt-6, and Pt-8 exhibit acetylide ligand localized 1π,π* fluorescence and 3MLCT/3LLCT phosphorescence in CH2Cl2, while Pt-5 manifests 1ILCT fluorescence and 3ILCT phosphorescence. However, only 1LLCT fluorescence was observed for Pt-7 at room temperature. The nanosecond transient absorption study was carried out for Pt-4−Pt-8 in CH3CN. Except for Pt-7 that contains NPh2 at the acetylide ligands, Pt-4−Pt-6 and Pt-8 all exhibit weak to moderate excited-state absorption in the visible spectral region. Reverse saturable absorption (RSA) of these complexes was demonstrated at 532 nm using 4.1 ns laser pulses in a 2 mm cuvette. The strength of RSA follows this trend: Pt-4 > Pt-5 > Pt-7 > Pt-6 > Pt-8. Incorporation of electron-donating substituent NPh2 on the bipyridyl ligand significantly decreases the RSA, while shorter π-conjugation in the bipyridyl ligand increases the RSA. Therefore, the substituent at either the acetylide ligands or the bipyridyl ligand could affect the singlet and triplet excited-state characteristics significantly, which strongly influences the RSA efficiency.

Nowadays Solar Cooling systems are becoming popular to reduce the carbon footprint of air conditioning. The use of an absorption chiller connected to solar thermal panels is increasing, but little study has been carried out to assess the advantage of join together an absorption chiller and a desiccant wheel to remove the sensible heat and the latent heat in different ways than the current design adopted in the industry. In this work I assess the possibility of implement a desiccant wheel in a conventional solar cooling system and the possibility of recovering the heat rejected by the absorption chiller which is then used for the regeneration of the desiccant wheel. The implementation of a desiccant wheel and the recovery of the heat rejected could provide a significant energy saving when compared to traditional solar cooling system. The results assist in the practical development of a solar cooling system which simultaneously uses absorption and adsorption technology.
