We propose a method for learning specific object representations that can be applied (and reused) in visual detection and identification tasks. A machine learning technique called Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) is used to create these models based on a series of images. Our research investigates how manipulation actions might allow for the development of better visual models and therefore better robot vision. This paper describes how visual object representations can be learned and improved by performing object manipulation actions, such as, poke, push and pick-up with a humanoid robot. The improvement can be measured and allows for the robot to select and perform the `right' action, i.e. the action with the best possible improvement of the detector.

The structures of the 1:1 co-crystalline adduct C8H6BrN3S . C7H5NO4 (I) and the salt C8H7BrN3S+ C7H3N2O7- (II) from the interaction of 5-(4-bromophenyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-amine with 4-nitrobenzoic acid and 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid, respectively, have been determined. The primary inter-species association in both (I) and (II) is through duplex R2/2(8) (N-H...O/O-H...O) or (N-H...O/N-H...O) hydrogen bonds, respectively, giving heterodimers. In (II), these are close to planar [dihedral angles between the thiadiazole ring and the two phenyl rings are 2.1(3)deg. (intra) and 9.8(2)deg. (inter)], while in (I) these angles are 22.11(15) and 26.08(18)deg., respectively. In the crystal of (I), the heterodimers are extended into a one-dimensional chain along b through an amine N-...N(thiadiazole) hydrogen bond but in (II), a centrosymmetric cyclic heterotetramer structure is generated through N-H...O hydrogen bonds to phenol and nitro O-atom acceptors and features, together with the primary R2/2(8) interaction, conjoined R4/6(12), R2/1(6) and S(6) ring motifs. Also present in (I) are pi--pi interactions between thiadiazole rings [minimum ring centroid separation, 3.4624(16)deg.] as well as short Br...O(nitro) interactions in both (I) and (II) [3.296(3)A and 3.104(3)A, respectively].

The genus Austronothrus was previously known from three species recorded only from New Zealand. Austronothrus kinabalu sp. nov. is described from Sabah, Borneo and A. rostralis sp. nov. from Norfolk Island, south-west Pacific. A key to Austronothrus is included. These new species extend the distribution of Austronothrus beyond New Zealand and confirms that the subfamily Crotoniinae is not confined to former Gondwanan landmasses. The distribution pattern of Austronothrus spp., combining Oriental and Gondwanan localities, is indicative of a curved, linear track; consistent with the accretion of island arcs and volcanic terranes around the plate margins of the Pacific Ocean, with older taxa persisting on younger island though localised dispersal within island arc metapopulations. Phylogenetic analysis and an area cladogram are consistent with a broad ancestral distribution of Austronothrus in the Oriental region and on Gondwanan terranes, with subsequent divergence and distribution southward from the Sunda region to New Zealand. This pattern is more complex than might be expected if the New Zealand oribatid fauna was derived from dispersal following re-emergence of land after inundation during the Oligocene (25 mya), as well as if the fauna emanated from endemic, relictual taxa following separation of New Zealand from Gondwana during the Cretaceous (80 mya).

This paper describes a concept for supporting distributed hands-on collaboration through interaction design for the physical and the digital workspace. The Blended Interaction Spaces concept creates distributed work environments in which collaborating parties all feel that they are present here rather than there. We describe thinking and inspirations behind the Blended Interaction Spaces concept, and summarize findings from fieldwork activities informing our design. We then exemplify the Blended Interaction Spaces concept through a prototype implementation of one of four concepts.

The use of seafood ecolabels is expanding in the world marketplace, but so are labels indicating other product attributes, such as country of origin and wild vs. farmed. The interactive effects of these labels and attributes in evaluating consumers' preferences for ecolabeled seafood are relatively unexplored. In this paper we investigate (1) the direct and interactive effects of seafood ecolabels with other common fish labels, and (2) how consumers' perceptions about the state of marine stocks and the valuation of ecolabels may be affected by different information. We find moderate interactive effects between ecolabels and country of origin labels, whereas the valuation for seafood ecolabels is fairly high. In terms of information, we find that consumers' perceptions about fish stock levels changed (negatively) after receiving information on declining stock levels, and more sensationalized information led to increased change. However, valuation for a seafood ecolabel increases only when the information was perceived positively (credible/interesting); whereas exaggerated information (which was also perceived less credible) had insignificant effects on WTP.

Iron species are one of the least toxic and least expensive substances that are photocatalytic in the visible region of the spectrum. Therefore, this article focuses on iron-based photocatalysts sensitive to visible light. Photo-Fenton reactions are considered with respect to those assisted by and involve the in situ production of H2O2. The possible role that photoactive iron species play by interacting with natural organic matter in water purification in the natural environment is considered. The review also considered photosensitization by phthalocyanines and the potential role that layered double hydroxides may have not only as catalyst supports but also as photosensitizers themselves. Finally, photocatalytic disinfection of water is discussed, and the desirability of standardized metrics and experimental conditions to assist in the comparative evaluation of photocatalysts is highlighted.

The anhydrous salts of 1<i>H</i>-indole-3-ethanamine (tryptamine) with isomeric (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D) and (3,5-dichlorophenoxy)acetic (3,5-D), C10H13N2+ (C8H5Cl2O3)-, [(I) and (II), respectively] have been determined and their one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded polymeric structures are described. In the crystal of (I),the aminium H-atoms are involved in three separate inter-species N-H...O hydrogen-bonding interactions, two with carboxyl O-atom acceptors and the third in an asymmetric three-centre bidentate carboxyl O,O' chelate [graph set R2/1(4)]. The indole H-atom forms an N-H...O~carboxyl~ hydrogen bond, extending the chain structure along the b axial direction. In (II), two of the three aminium H-atoms are also involved in N-H...O(carboxyl) hydrogen bonds similar to (I) but with the third, a three-centre asymmetric interaction with carboxyl and phenoxy O-atoms is found [graph set R2/1(5)]. The chain polymeric extension is also along b. There are no pi--pi ring interactions in either of the structures. The aminium side chain conformations differ significantly between the two structures, reflecting the conformational ambivalence of the tryptaminium cation, as found also in the benzoate salts.

The Special Issue of Interacting with Computers, 2015 showcases the current state of the art in intuitive interaction research. Several papers have showcased new potential methods for both applying and assessing intuitive interaction during early and later phases of the design process. Diefenbach and Ullrich present a new, alternative framework for intuitive interaction, comprised of the four components of gut feeling, verbalizability. Fischer and colleagues paper also reported on an experiment in applying image schemas but in this case they aimed to find a more efficient way of discovering and applying them, in order to find ways to improve the design process as well as assessment of new interfaces. Still and co-researchers had a similar aim, that of establishing what levels and types of knowledge can be most easily and accurately elicited from users in order to be applied to new interfaces. Hespanhol and Tomitsch described strategies for intuitive interaction in public urban spaces. Macaranas and colleagues described an experiment which tested three different full body gestural interfaces to establish which types of mappings were more intuitive, one based on images schemas and two on different previously encountered features from other types of interfaces.

This thesis investigated, for the first time, the prevalence of Ureaplasma species infection within the placentae of women who delivered in the late preterm stages of pregnancy. The presence of these microorganisms was associated with either severe inflammation within the placenta or, for some women, there were no pregnancy complications and these women delivered at term. Ureaplasmas are able to vary their surface exposed lipoproteins and we demonstrated that different host immune responses were generated in vivo to different sized surface lipoproteins. This may explain why ureaplasma infections do not always result in adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.

The thesis offers the foundation of a design pattern language for urban gardening, as well as a prototype mobile storytelling platform through which urban gardeners can share gardening experiences. This study examined three urban agriculture communities a city farm, a permaculture movement, and residential gardeners in order to better understand some of the challenges in their food growing practices. The city is increasingly being rediscovered by gardeners, food activists, and local governments as an under-utilised opportunity space for land cultivation and local food production, and the findings of this research were analysed with a view to consider interactive technology and design interventions in response.

Towards Intuitive Interaction Theory Intuitive interaction, or intuitive use, or even intuitivity, have long been buzzwords used by designers and marketers but until recently there was no research about what this might entail and how designers could encourage it. This century, work on intuitive interaction has been gaining pace and this special issue showcases the state of the art in intuitive interaction research worldwide. This editorial is intended to introduce readers to the concept and definitions of intuitive interaction, briefly discuss the short history of work in this field and highlight and discuss some of the main issues raised by the papers in the issue.

This discussion paper is intended to provide background material for the workshop organised by Queensland University Technology (QUT) on 17 October 2014. The overall purpose of the workshop is to better understand the relationship between the precautionary principle and endangered species management in Australia. In particular, we are looking for real life examples (or hypotheticals) of where the principle is (or is not) being applied in relation to Australias endangered species. A wide variety of participants have been invited to the workshop including scientists, representatives of NGOs, lawyers and academics. Whilst some very general information is outlined below, we encourage all participants to bring their own thoughts on how the precautionary principle should operate and to reflect on examples of where you have seen it work (or not work) in Australia. The sharing of your own case studies is thus encouraged.

Background Little information exists regarding the interaction effects of obesity with long-term air pollution exposure on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and stroke in areas of high pollution. The aim of the present study is to examine whether obesity modifies CVD-related associations among people living in an industrial province of northeast China. Methods We studied 24,845 Chinese adults, aged 18 to 74 years old, from three Northeastern Chinese cities in 2009 utilizing a cross-sectional study design. Body weight and height were measured by trained observers. Overweight and obesity were defined as a body mass index (BMI) between 2529.9 and 30 kg/m2, respectively. Prevalence rate and related risk factors of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases were investigated by a questionnaire. Three-year (20062008) average concentrations of particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxides (NO2), and ozone (O3) were measured by fixed monitoring stations. All the participants lived within 1 km of air monitoring sites. Two-level logistic regression (personal level and district-specific pollutant level) was used to examine these effects, controlling for covariates. Results We observed significant interactions between exposure and obesity on CVDs and stroke. The associations between annual pollutant concentrations and CVDs and stroke were strongest in obese subjects (OR 1.151.47 for stroke, 1.331.59 for CVDs), less strong in overweight subjects (OR 1.221.35 for stroke, 1.071.13 for CVDs), and weakest in normal weight subjects (OR ranged from 0.981.01 for stroke, 0.931.15 for CVDs). When stratified by gender, these interactions were significant only in women. Conclusions Study findings indicate that being overweight and obese may enhance the effects of air pollution on the prevalence of CVDs and stroke in Northeastern metropolitan China. Further studies will be needed to investigate the temporality of BMI relative to exposure and onset of disease.

The stoned locus in Drosophila encodes two proteins StonedA (STNA) and StonedB (STNB), both of which have been suggested to act as adaptins in mediating synaptic vesicle recycling. A combination of immunological, genetic and biochemical studies have shown an interaction of STNA and STNB with the C2B domain of Synaptotagmin-I (SYT-1), an integral synaptic vesicle protein that mediates Ca2+-dependent exocytosis, as well as endocytosis. The C2B domain of SYT-1 contains an AP-2 binding site that controls the size of recycled vesicles, and a C-terminal tryptophan-containing motif that acts as an internalization signal. Investigation of SYT-1 mutations in Drosophila has shown that altering the Ca2+ binding region of the C2B domain, results in a reduction in the rate of vesicle recycling, implicating this region in SYT-I endocytosis. In this poster, we report the molecular dissection of the interactions between the STNA and STNB proteins and the C2B domain of SYT-1. Deletion of the AP-2 binding site decreased the binding of both STNA and STNB. However, C-terminal deletions of the C2B domain significantly increased STNB binding. In contrast, the same C-terminal deletions reduced the affinity of the C2B domain for STNA. The possible interactions of both STNB and STNA with the Ca2+ binding region of SYT-1 will be also investigated.
