Inverse problems based on using experimental data to estimate unknown parameters of a system often arise in biological and chaotic systems. In this paper, we consider parameter estimation in systems biology involving linear and non-linear complex dynamical models, including the Michaelis–Menten enzyme kinetic system, a dynamical model of competence induction in Bacillus subtilis bacteria and a model of feedback bypass in B. subtilis bacteria. We propose some novel techniques for inverse problems. Firstly, we establish an approximation of a non-linear differential algebraic equation that corresponds to the given biological systems. Secondly, we use the Picard contraction mapping, collage methods and numerical integration techniques to convert the parameter estimation into a minimization problem of the parameters. We propose two optimization techniques: a grid approximation method and a modified hybrid Nelder–Mead simplex search and particle swarm optimization (MH-NMSS-PSO) for non-linear parameter estimation. The two techniques are used for parameter estimation in a model of competence induction in B. subtilis bacteria with noisy data. The MH-NMSS-PSO scheme is applied to a dynamical model of competence induction in B. subtilis bacteria based on experimental data and the model for feedback bypass. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

Phospholipid (PL) molecules form the main structure of the membrane that prevents the direct contact of opposing articular cartilage layers. In this paper we conceptualise articular cartilage as a giant reverse micelle (GRM) in which the highly hydrated three-dimensional network of phospholipids is electrically charged and able to resist compressive forces during joint movement, and hence loading. Using this hypothetical base, we describe a hydrophilic-hydrophilic (HL-HL) biopair model of joint lubrication by contacting cartilages, whose mechanism is reliant on lamellar cushioning. To demonstrate the viability of our concept, the electrokinetic properties of the membranous layer on the articular surface were determined by measuring via microelectrophoresis, the adsorption of ions H, OH, Na and Cl on phospholipid membrane of liposomes, leading to the calculation of the effective surface charge density. The surface charge density was found to be -0.08 ± 0.002 cm-2 (mean ± S.D.) for phospholipid membranes, in 0.155 M NaCl solution and physiological pH. This value was approximately five times less than that measured in 0.01 M NaCl. The addition of synovial fluid (SF) to the 0.155 M NaCl solution reduced the surface charge density by 30% which was attributed to the binding of synovial fluid macromolecules to the phospholipid membrane. Our experiments show that particles charge and interact strongly with the polar core of RM. We demonstrate that particles can have strong electrostatic interactions when ions and macromolecules are solubilized by reverse micelle (RM). Since ions are solubilized by reverse micelle, the surface entropy influences the change in the charge density of the phospholipid membrane on cartilage surfaces. Reverse micelles stabilize ions maintaining equilibrium, their surface charges contribute to the stability of particles, while providing additional screening for electrostatic processes. © 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Porous SiO2 scaffolds with mesopore structure (named as MS scaffolds) have been proposed as suitable for bone tissue engineering due to their excellent drug-delivery ability; however, the mineralization and cytocompatibility of MS scaffolds are far from optimal for bone tissue engineering, and it is also unclear how the delivery of drugs from MS scaffolds affects osteoblastic cells. The aims of the present study were to improve the mineralization and cytocompatibility of MS scaffolds by coating mussel-inspired polydopamine on the pore walls of scaffolds. The effects of polydopamine modification on MS scaffolds was investigated with respect to apatite mineralization and the attachment, proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs), as was the release profile of the drug dexamethasone (DEX). Our results show that polydopamine can readily coat the pore walls of MS scaffolds and that polydopamine-modified MS scaffolds have a significantly improved apatite-mineralization ability as well as better attachment and proliferation of BMSCs in the scaffolds, compared to controls. Polydopamine modification did not alter the release profile of DEX from MS scaffolds but the sustained delivery of DEX significantly improved alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of BMSCs in the scaffolds. These results suggest that polydopamine modification is a viable option to enhance the bioactivity of bone tissue engineering scaffolds and, further, that DEX-loaded polydopamine MS scaffolds have potential uses as a release system to enhance the osteogenic properties of bone tissue engineering applications.

Urban expansion continues to encroach on once isolated sewerage infrastructure. In this context, legislation and guidelines provide limited direction to the amenity allocation of appropriate buffer distances for land use planners and infrastructure providers. Topography, wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, existing land uses and vegetation profiles are some of the factors that require investigation in analytically determining a basis for buffer separations. This paper discusses the compilation and analysis of six years of Logan sewerage odour complaint data. Graphically, relationships between the complaints, topographical features and meteorological data are presented. Application of a buffer sizing process could assist planners and infrastructure designers alike, whilst automatically providing extra green spaces. Establishing a justifiable criterion for buffer zone allocations can only assist in promoting manageable growth for healthier and more sustainable communities.
