We have prepared p-n junction organic photovoltaic cells using an all solution processing method with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the donor and phenyl-C 61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as the acceptor. Interdigitated donor/acceptor interface morphology was observed in the device processed with the lowest boiling point solvent for PCBM used in this study. The influences of different solvents on donor/acceptor morphology and respective device performance were investigated simultaneously. The best device obtained had characteristically rough interface morphology with a peak to valley value ∼15 nm. The device displayed a power conversion efficiency of 1.78%, an open circuit voltage (V oc) 0.44 V, a short circuit current density (J sc) 9.4 mA/cm 2 and a fill factor 43%.

It is well known that the neutralisation of Bayer liquor with seawater causes the precipitation of stable alkaline products and a reduction in pH and dissolved metal concentrations in the effluent. However, there is limited information available on solution chemistry effects on the stability and reaction kinetics of these precipitates. This investigation shows the influence of reactive species (magnesium and calcium) in seawater on precipitate stabilities and volumetric efficiencies during the neutralisation of bauxite refinery residues. Correlations between synthetic seawater solutions and real samples of seawater (filtered seawater, nanofiltered seawater and reverse osmosis brine) have been made. These investigations have been used to confirm that alternative seawater sources can be used to increase the productivity potential of the neutralisation process with minimal implications on the composition and stability of precipitates formed. The volume efficiency of the neutralisation process using synthetic analogues has been shown to be almost directly proportional with the concentration of magnesium. This was further confirmed in the nanofiltered seawater and reverse osmosis brine that showed increases in the efficiency of neutralisation by factors of 3 and 2 compared to seawater, which corresponds with relatively the same increase in the concentration of magnesium in these alternative seawater sources. An assessment of the chemical stability of the precipitates, volumetric efficiency, and discharge water quality have been determined using numerous techniques that include pH, conductivity, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis coupled to mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction. Correlations between synthetic solution compositions and alternative seawater sources have been used to determine if alternative seawater sources are potential substitutes for seawater based on improvements in productivity, implementation costs, savings to operations and environmental benefits.

An understanding of the influence of soil chemistry on soil hydraulic properties is of critical importance for the management of sodic soils under irrigation. The hydraulic conductivity of sodic soils has been shown to be affected by properties of the applied solution including pH (Suarez et al. 1984), sodicity and salt concentration (McNeal and Coleman 1966). The changes in soil hydraulic conductivity are the result of changes in the spacing between clay layers in response to changes in soil solution chemistry. While the importance o f soil chemistry in controlling hydraulic conductivity is known, the exact impacts of sodic soil amelioration on hydraulic conductivity and deep drainage at a given location are difficult to predict. This is because the relationships between soil chemical factors and hydraulic conductivity are soil specific and because local site specific factors also need to be considered to determine the actual impacts on deep drainage rates.

In the mining optimisation literature, most researchers focused on two strategic-level and tactical-level open-pit mine optimisation problems, which are respectively termed ultimate pit limit (UPIT) or constrained pit limit (CPIT). However, many researchers indicate that the substantial numbers of variables and constraints in real-world instances (e.g., with 50-1000 thousand blocks) make the CPIT’s mixed integer programming (MIP) model intractable for use. Thus, it becomes a considerable challenge to solve the large scale CPIT instances without relying on exact MIP optimiser as well as the complicated MIP relaxation/decomposition methods. To take this challenge, two new graph-based algorithms based on network flow graph and conjunctive graph theory are developed by taking advantage of problem properties. The performance of our proposed algorithms is validated by testing recent large scale benchmark UPIT and CPIT instances’ datasets of MineLib in 2013. In comparison to best known results from MineLib, it is shown that the proposed algorithms outperform other CPIT solution approaches existing in the literature. The proposed graph-based algorithms leads to a more competent mine scheduling optimisation expert system because the third-party MIP optimiser is no longer indispensable and random neighbourhood search is not necessary.

We have designed, synthesized and utilized a new non-fullerene electron acceptor, 9,9′-(9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene-2,7-diyl)bis(2,7-dioctyl-4-(octylamino)benzo[lmn][3,8]phenanthroline-1,3,6,8(2H,7H)-tetraone) (B2), for use in solution-processable bulk-heterojunction devices. B2 is based on a central fluorene moiety, which was capped at both ends with an electron-accepting naphthalenediimide functionality. B2 exhibited excellent solubility (>30 mg mL−1 in chloroform), high thermal and photochemical stability, and appropriate energy levels for use with the classical polymer donor regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene). A power conversion efficiency of 1.16 % was achieved for primitive bulk-heterojunction devices with a high fill factor of approximately 54 %.

A solution-processable, non-fullerene electron acceptor, 2,2′-(((5,5-dioctyl-5 H-dibenzo[b,d]silole-3,7-diyl)bis(thiophene-5,2-diyl))bis(methanylylidene))bis(1 H-indene-1,3(2 H)-dione) (called N5) comprised of dibenzosilole and 1,3-indanedione building blocks was designed, synthesized, and fully characterized. N5 is highly soluble in various organic solvents, has high thermal stability, and has energy levels matching those of archetypal donor poly(3-hexylthiophene). Solution-processable, bulk-heterojunction solar cells afforded promising power conversion efficiency of 2.76 % when N5 was used as a non-fullerene electron acceptor along with the conventional donor polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene). As per our knowledge, the material reported herein is the first example in the literature where synchronous use of such building blocks is demonstrated in the design an efficient, non-fullerene acceptor.

The multifractal properties of daily rainfall time series at the stations in Pearl River basin of China over periods of up to 45 years are examined using the universal multifractal approach based on the multiplicative cascade model and the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA). The results from these two kinds of multifractal analyses show that the daily rainfall time series in this basin have multifractal behavior in two different time scale ranges. It is found that the empirical multifractal moment function K(q)K(q) of the daily rainfall time series can be fitted very well by the universal multifractal model (UMM). The estimated values of the conservation parameter HH from UMM for these daily rainfall data are close to zero indicating that they correspond to conserved fields. After removing the seasonal trend in the rainfall data, the estimated values of the exponent h(2)h(2) from MF-DFA indicate that the daily rainfall time series in Pearl River basin exhibit no long-term correlations. It is also found that K(2)K(2) and elevation series are negatively correlated. It shows a relationship between topography and rainfall variability.

Objectives. It has been shown previously that IL-23R variants are associated with AS. We conducted an extended analysis in the UK population and a meta-analysis with the previously published studies, in order to refine these IL-23R associations with AS. Methods. The UK case-control study included 730 new cases and 1331 healthy controls. In the extended study, the 730 cases were combined with 1088 published cases. Allelic associations were analysed using contingency tables. In the meta-analysis, 3482 cases and 3150 controls from four different published studies and the new UK cases were combined. DerSimonian-Laird test was used to calculate random effects pooled odds ratios (ORs). Results. In the UK case-control study with new cases, four of the eight SNPs showed significant associations, whereas in the extended UK study, seven of the eight IL-23R SNPs showed significant associations (P < 0.05) with AS, maximal with rs11209032 (P < 10-5, OR 1.3), when cases with IBD and/or psoriasis were excluded. The meta-analysis showed significant associations with all eight SNPs; the strongest associations were again seen not only with rs11209032 (P = 4.06 × 10-9, OR ∼1.2) but also with rs11209026 (P < 10-10, OR ∼0.6). Conclusions. IL-23R polymorphisms are clearly associated with AS, but the primary causal association(s) is(are) still not established. These polymorphisms could contribute either increased or decreased susceptibility to AS; functional studies will be required for their full evaluation. Additionally, observed stronger associations with SNPs rs11209026 and rs11465804 upon exclusion of IBD and/or psoriasis cases may represent an independent association with AS. © The Author 2009. Measurements were made of the intake of a WHO/UNICEF glucose-based and a rice cereal-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) by children with diarrhoea. Twenty children who presented to the Children's Outpatient Department at Port Moresby General Hospital with acute diarrhoea and mild dehydration were randomly assigned to an ORS and measurements were taken over the following 3 hours. For data analysis, the patients were paired by weight. Testing the means of the paired samples by t test showed that there was no significant difference between the amount of rice ORS and the amount of glucose ORS taken over 3 hours. The discovery of oral rehydration solution (ORS) for the treatment of diarrheal disease has been heralded as the most important medical discovery of the century. Cereal-based ORS is able to decrease stool output and the duration of diarrheal illness more than the standard glucose-based ORS, through the increased absorption provided by oligosaccharides without the imposition of a greater osmotic penalty. Moreover, the peptides in cereals enhance amino acid and water absorption, while providing nutritional benefits. UNICEF's glucose-based ORS is becoming more widely used in Papua New Guinea (PNG). 20 children aged 6-37 months (mean age, 15 months) who presented to the Children's Outpatient Department at Port Moresby General Hospital during September-October 1993 with acute diarrhea and mild dehydration were randomly assigned to receive either a rice-based ORS or standard glucose ORS, and measurements were taken over the following 3 hours. The patients were paired by weight for analysis. No statistically significant difference was found between the amount of rice ORS and the amount of glucose ORS taken over 3 hours.

The guardians of children brought to the Port Moresby General Hospital's Children's Outpatient Department with a chief complaint of diarrhoeal disease were questioned regarding their preference of glucose-based vs rice-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) in order to determine the acceptability of a rice-based ORS. Of the 93 guardians interviewed, greater than 60% preferred the glucose-based solution in its mixability, appearance and taste, and 65% initially reported that their children preferred the taste of the glucose solution. However, after a 30-minute trial, only 58% of children still preferred the glucose solution. In a country where diarrhoeal disease is a leading cause of child death and guardians are the primary health care providers, the acceptability of an ORS is critical to the morbidity and mortality of Papua New Guinea's children. Killing an estimated 2.9 million children annually, diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of child mortality worldwide. Diarrheal disease is also the second leading cause of child mortality in Papua New Guinea (PNG), killing an average 193 inpatient children per year over the period 1984-90. However, despite the high level of diarrhea-related mortality and the proven efficacy of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) in managing diarrhea-related dehydration, standardized ORT has been underutilized in PNG. The current glucose-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) does not reduce the frequency or volume of a child's diarrhea, the most immediate concern of caregivers during episodes of illness. Cereal-based ORS, made from cereals which are commonly available as food staples in most countries, better address the short-term concerns of caregivers while offering a superior nutritional profile. A sample of guardians of children brought to the Port Moresby General Hospital's Children's Outpatient Department complaining of child diarrhea were asked about their preferences on glucose-based versus rice-based ORS in order to determine the acceptability of a rice-based ORS. Several articles in this journal have studied optimal designs for testing a series of treatments to identify promising ones for further study. These designs formulate testing as an ongoing process until a promising treatment is identified. This formulation is considered to be more realistic but substantially increases the computational complexity. In this article, we show that these new designs, which control the error rates for a series of treatments, can be reformulated as conventional designs that control the error rates for each individual treatment. This reformulation leads to a more meaningful interpretation of the error rates and hence easier specification of the error rates in practice. The reformulation also allows us to use conventional designs from published tables or standard computer programs to design trials for a series of treatments. We illustrate these using a study in soft tissue sarcoma.

Conventional treatment of distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS) with high doses of pancreatic enzymes, mucolytic agents, and enemas is neither predictably effective nor rapid in action. In 6 cystic fibrosis patients with DIOS a balanced, non-absorbable intestinal lavage solution produced clinical and radiological improvement and striking improvement in DIOS scores. It is suggested that a balanced intestinal lavage solution should be considered as an alternative treatment for DIOS in patients with cystic fibrosis.

In this paper we consider the third-moment structure of a class of time series models. It is often argued that the marginal distribution of financial time series such as returns is skewed. Therefore it is of importance to know what properties a model should possess if it is to accommodate unconditional skewness. We consider modeling the unconditional mean and variance using models that respond nonlinearly or asymmetrically to shocks. We investigate the implications of these models on the third-moment structure of the marginal distribution as well as conditions under which the unconditional distribution exhibits skewness and nonzero third-order autocovariance structure. In this respect, an asymmetric or nonlinear specification of the conditional mean is found to be of greater importance than the properties of the conditional variance. Several examples are discussed and, whenever possible, explicit analytical expressions provided for all third-order moments and cross-moments. Finally, we introduce a new tool, the shock impact curve, for investigating the impact of shocks on the conditional mean squared error of return series.
