Radio frequency (R.F.) glow discharge polyterpenol thin films were prepared on silicon wafers and irradiated with I10+ ions to fluences of 1 × 1010 and 1 × 1012 ions/cm2. Post-irradiation characterisation of these films indicated the development of well-defined nano-scale ion entry tracks, highlighting prospective applications for ion irradiated polyterpenol thin films in a variety of membrane and nanotube-fabrication functions. Optical characterisation showed the films to be optically transparent within the visible spectrum and revealed an ability to selectively control the thin film refractive index as a function of fluence. This indicates that ion irradiation processing may be employed to produce plasma-polymer waveguides to accommodate a variety of wavelengths. XRR probing of the substrate-thin film interface revealed interfacial roughness values comparable to those obtained for the uncoated substrate's surface (i.e., both on the order of 5 Å), indicating minimal substrate etching during the plasma deposition process.

This study presents the effect of iodine doping on optical and surface properties of polyterpenol thin films deposited from non-synthetic precursor by means of plasma polymerisation. Spectroscopic ellipsometry studies showed iodine doping reduced the optical band gap from 2.82 eV to 1.50 eV for pristine and doped samples respectively. Higher levels of doping notably reduced the transparency of films, an issue if material is considered for applications that require high transparency. Contact angle studies demonstrated higher hydrophilicity for films deposited at increased doping levels, results confirmed by XPS Spectroscopy and FTIR. Doping had no significant effect on the surface profile or roughness of the film.

We synthesized vertically aligned nail-shaped ZnO nanocrystal arrays on silicon substrates via a combination of a carbothermal reduction method and textured ZnO seeding layers that were precoated on silicon substrates by thermally decomposing zinc acetate, and studied their optical properties using cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence techniques. The ZnO nanonails show a sharp band-gap edge UV emission and a defect-related broad green emission. Monochromatic CL images of an individual ZnO nanonail show variations in spatial distributions of respective CL bands that had different origins. We attribute the spatial variation of CL images to an uneven distribution of luminescent defects and/or a structure-related light out-coupling from hexagonal ZnO nanostructures. The most distinct CL feature from the hexagonal head of an individual ZnO nanonail was the occurrence of a series of distinct resonant peaks within the visible wavelength range. It appeared that the head of a nanonail played the role of a hexagonal cavity so that polarizationdependent whispering gallery modes were stimulated by electron beam excitation.

A series of aza-boron-diquinomethene (aza-BODIQU) complexes with different aryl-substituents (B1–B6) were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were investigated systematically via spectroscopic and theoretical methods. All complexes exhibit strong 1π–π* absorption bands and intense fluorescent emission bands in the visible spectral region at room temperature. The fluorescence spectra in solution show the mirror image features of the S0→S1 absorption bands, which can be assigned to the 1π–π*/1ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) emitting states. Except for B6, all complexes exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦPL = 0.47–0.93). The spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations indicate that the photophysical properties of these aza-BODIQUs can be tuned by the appended aryl-substituents, which would be useful for rational design of boron–fluorine complexes with high emission quantum yield for organic light-emitting applications.

Plasma-assisted magnetron sputtering with varying ambient conditions has been utilised to deposit Al-doped ZnO (AZO) transparent conductive thin films directly onto a glass substrate at a low substrate temperature of 400 °C. The effects of hydrogen addition on electrical, optical and structural properties of the deposited AZO films have been investigated using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Hall effect measurements and UV–vis optical transmission spectroscopy. The results indicate that hydrogen addition has a remarkable effect on the film transparency and conductivity with the greatest effects observed with a hydrogen flux of approximately 3 sccm. It has been demonstrated that the conductivity and the average transmittance in the visible range can increase simultaneously contrary to the effects observed by other authors. In addition, hydrogen incorporation further leads to the absorption edge shifting to a shorter wavelength due to the Burstein–Moss effect. These results are of particular relevance to the development of the next generation of optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices based on highly transparent conducting oxides with controllable electronic and optical properties.

Silicon thin films were synthesized simultaneously on single-crystal silicon and glass substrates by lowpressure, thermally nonequilibrium, high-density inductively coupled plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition from the silane precursor gas without any additional hydrogen dilution in a broad range of substrate temperatures from 100 to 500 °C. The effect of the substrate temperature on the morphological, structural and optical properties of the synthesized silicon thin films is systematically studied by X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that the formation of nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) occurs when the substrate temperature is higher than 200 °C and that all the deposited nc-Si films have a preferential growth along the (111) direction. However, the mean grain size of the (111) orientation slightly and gradually decreases while the mean grain size of the (220) orientation shows a monotonous increase with the increased substrate temperature from 200 to 500 °C. It is also found that the crystal volume fraction of the synthesized nc-Si thin films has a maximum value of ∼69.1% at a substrate temperature of 300 rather than 500 °C. This rather unexpected result is interpreted through the interplay of thermokinetic surface diffusion and hydrogen termination effects. Furthermore, we have also shown that with the increased substrate temperature from 100 to 500 °C, the optical bandgap is reduced while the growth rates tend to increase. The maximum rates of change of the optical bandgap and the growth rates occur when the substrate temperature is increased from 400 to 500 °C. These results are highly relevant to the development of photovoltaic thin-film solar cells, thin-film transistors, and flat-panel displays.

Vertical graphene nanosheets have advantages over their horizontal counterparts, primarily due to the larger surface area available in the vertical systems. Vertical sheets can accommodate more functional particles, and due to the conduction and optical properties of thin graphene, these structures can find niche applications in the development of sensing and energy storage devices. This work is a combined experimental and theoretical study that reports on the synthesis and optical responses of vertical sheets decorated with gold nanoparticles. The findings help in interpreting optical responses of these hybrid graphene structures and are relevant to the development of future sensing platforms.

Abstract: A strategy that is often used for designing low band gap polymers involves the incorporation of electron-rich (donor) and electron-deficient (acceptor) conjugated segments within the polymer backbone. In this paper we investigate such a series of Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based co-polymers. The co-polymers consisted of a DPP unit attached to a phenylene, naphthalene, or anthracene unit. Additionally, polymers utilizing either the thiophene-flanked DPP or the furan-flanked DPP units paired with the naphthalene comonomer were compared. As these polymers have been used as donor materials and subsequent hole transporting materials in organic solar cells, we are specifically interested in characterizing the optical absorption of the hole polaron of these DPP based copolymers. We employ chemical doping, electrochemical doping, and photoinduced absorption (PIA) studies to probe the hole polaron absorption spectra. While some donor-acceptor polymers have shown an appreciable capacity to generate free charge carriers upon photoexcitation, no polaron signal was observed in the PIA spectrum of the polymers in this study. The relations between molecular structure and optical properties are discussed. Low pressure radio frequency plasma-assisted deposition of 1-isopropyl-4-methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene thin films was investigated for different polymerization conditions. Transparent, environmentally stable and flexible, these organic films are promising candidates for organic photovoltaics (OPV) and flexible electronics applications, where they can be used as encapsulating coatings and insulating interlayers. The effect of deposition RF power on optical properties of the films was limited, with all films being optically transparent, with refractive indices in a range of 1.57–1.58 at 500 nm. The optical band gap (Eg) of ~3 eV fell into the insulating Eg region, decreasing for films fabricated at higher RF power. Independent of deposition conditions, the surfaces were smooth and defect-free, with uniformly distributed morphological features and average roughness between 0.30 nm (at 10 W) and 0.21 nm (at 75 W). Films fabricated at higher deposition power displayed enhanced resistance to delamination and wear, and improved hardness, from 0.40 GPa for 10 W to 0.58 GPa for 75 W at a load of 700 μN. From an application perspective, it is therefore possible to tune the mechanical and morphological properties of these films without compromising their optical transparency or insulating property.
