How the environment affects opportunity recognition by entrepreneurs at the bottom of the pyramid

There is an army of bottom of the pyramid entrepreneurs (BOPE) who have the potential to transform developing economies, if they can identify and exploit business opportunities. BOPE could have unidentified resources that could lead to the recognition of radical new opportunities. This study paper asks how environmental factors and identification of resources affect Opportunity Recognition by BOP entrepreneurs in developing economies. To investigate this research question we conduct a literature review and plan semi-structured interviews of existing and nascent entrepreneurs in the largest and arguably the poorest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In this paper we review the context of BOPE and describe the methodology we will use to gather and analyse data. Finally, we describe our access to suitable respondents for this study and how it will be conducted.

Vibrational spectroscopy of the borate mineral gaudefroyite Ca4Mn3+3-x(BO3)3(CO3)(O,OH) from N’Chwaning II mine, Kalahari, Republic of South Africa

Gaudefroyite Ca4Mn3+3-x(BO3)3(CO3)(O,OH)3 is an unusual mineral containing both borate and carbonate groups and is found in the oxidation zones of manganese minerals, and it is black in color. Vibrational spectroscopy has been used to explore the molecular structure of gaudefroyite. Gaudefroyite crystals are short dipyramidal or prismatic with prominent pyramidal terminations, to 5 cm. Two very sharp Raman bands at 927 and 1076 cm-1are assigned to trigonal borate and carbonate respectively. Broad Raman bands at 1194, 1219 and 1281 cm-1 are attributed to BOH in-plane bending modes. Raman bands at 649 and 670 cm-1 are assigned to the bending modes of trigonal and tetrahedral boron. Infrared spectroscopy supports these band assignments. Raman bands in the OH stretching region are of a low intensity. The combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy enables the assessment of the molecular structure of gaudefroyite to be made.

Defence relationship health - deployment impact experience. A prospective study of the impact of deployment on the intimate relationships of Australian Army personnel

A comprehensive literature review has been undertaken exploring the stressors placed on the personal relationships of Australian Army personnel, through service life and also overseas deployments. This work is the first step in a program of research aimed at developing a screening tool, aimed at acting as an early warning system to enable the right assistance to be given to affected personnel at the earliest possible time. It is envisioned that this tool will be utilised by the day-to-day managers of Australian Army personnel, of whom the vast majority are not health practitioners. This review has identified the commonalities of relationships that last through service life and/or deployments, and those that fail. These factors are those which will aid the development of the screening tool, and enable the early identification of Australian Army personnel who are at risk of having their personal relationship break down. Several of the known relationship stressors are relevant to other ‘high intensity’ professions, such as paramedics. Personal experience as an Army Officer has helped to highlight the importance of this research, and the benefits of developing a tool tailored to the unique social microclimate that is the Australian Army are clear. This research is, to the author’s knowledge, unique in the Australian context.

Submission to the External Independent Review of the United Nations Response to Allegations of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Other Serious Crimes by Members of Foreign Military Forces Not Under United Nations Command in the Central African Republic

In 2015 the UN Secretary-General established an External Independent Review to review how the United Nations has responded to allegations of child sexual exploitation and child sexual abuse, and to make recommendations concerning how the United Nations should respond to allegations in the future. This submission to the Review Panel draws on literature regarding children's rights, the nature of child sexual abuse, international instruments and policy, the nature of institutional child sexual abuse, and the CAR case itself. It makes recommendations for reform of UN protocols and procedures to better prevent child sexual abuse, and to improve responses to future occurrences.
