In this study we undertook deep sequencing of the blood cockle, Anadara trapezia, transcriptome to generate genomic resources for future functional genomics analyses. Over 27 million high quality paired end reads were assembled into 75 024 contigs. Of these contigs, 29 013 (38.7%) received significant BLASTx hits and gene ontology (GO) terms were assigned to 13 718 of these sequences. This resourcewill facilitate physiological genomic studies to test the gene expression response of A. trapezia to various environmental stresses.

The evidence for nutritional support in COPD is almost entirely based on oral nutritional supplements (ONS) yet despite this dietary counseling and food fortification (DA) are often used as the first line treatment for malnutrition. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of ONS vs. DA in improving nutritional intake in malnourished outpatients with COPD. 70 outpatients (BMI 18.4 SD 1.6 kg/m2, age 73 SD 9 years, severe COPD) were randomised to receive a 12-week intervention of either ONS or DA (n 33 ONS vs. n 37 DA). Paired t-test analysis revealed total energy intakes significantly increased with ONS at week 6 (+302 SD 537 kcal/d; p = 0.002), with a slight reduction at week 12 (+243 SD 718 kcal/d; p = 0.061) returning to baseline levels on stopping supplementation. DA resulted in small increases in energy that only reached significance 3 months post-intervention (week 6: +48 SD 623 kcal/d, p = 0.640; week 12: +157 SD 637 kcal/d, p = 0.139; week 26: +247 SD 592 kcal/d, p = 0.032). Protein intake was significantly higher in the ONS group at both week 6 and 12 (ONS: +19.0 SD 25.0 g/d vs. DA: +1.0 SD 13.0 g/d; p = 0.033 ANOVA) but no differences were found at week 26. Vitamin C, Iron and Zinc intakes significantly increased only in the ONS group. ONS significantly increased energy, protein and several micronutrient intakes in malnourished COPD patients but only during the period of supplementation. Trials investigating the effects of combined nutritional interventions are required.

Humanistic psychologist Carl Rogers made a distinction between traditional approaches and humanistic `learner-centred\' approaches to education. The traditional approach holds that educators impart their knowledge to willing and able recipients; whereas the humanistic approach holds that educators act as facilitators who assist learners in their learning processes. As a learning theory, humanism refers to the belief in the innate ability of humans to learn, and the creation of an environment in which students are given `Freedom to Learn\'. South African accounting education has, by and large, followed the traditional approach rather than the humanistic approach. This article attempts to expand on the existing references to a humanistic approach through a more detailed exposition and application of the educational theory of Carl Rogers in the context of South African accounting education. The prospects of a humanistic approach in accounting education are then discussed and some practical strategies provided in relation to a specific third-year undergraduate accounting unit offered in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The tendency to conceive dizygotic (DZ) twins is a complex trait influenced by genetic and environmental factors. To search for new candidate loci for twinning, we conducted a genome-wide linkage scan in 525 families using microsatellite and single nucleotide polymorphism marker panels. METHODS AND RESULTS: Non-parametric linkage analyses, including 523 families containing a total of 1115 mothers of DZ twins (MODZT) from Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) and The Netherlands (NL), produced four linkage peaks above the threshold for suggestive linkage, including a highly suggestive peak at the extreme telomeric end of chromosome 6 with an exponential logarithm of odds \[(exp)LOD] score of 2.813 (P = 0.0002). Since the DZ twinning rate increases steeply with maternal age independent of genetic effects, we also investigated linkage including only families where at least one MODZT gave birth to her first set of twins before the age of 30. These analyses produced a maximum expLOD score of 2.718 (P = 0.0002), largely due to linkage signal from the ANZ cohort, however, ordered subset analyses indicated this result is most likely a chance finding in the combined dataset. Linkage analyses were also performed for two large DZ twinning families from the USA, one of which produced a peak on chromosome 2 in the region of two potential candidate genes. Sequencing of FSHR and FIGLA, along with INHBB in MODZTs from two large NL families with family specific linkage peaks directly over this gene, revealed a potentially functional variant in the 5' untranslated region of FSHR that segregated with the DZ twinning phenotype in the Utah family. CONCLUSION: Our data provide further evidence for complex inheritance of familial DZ twinning.
