As part of the process of renewing its City Centre Master Plan, Brisbane City Council and its CBD are hosting an Ideas Fiesta between April 11th- 3rd May 2013. It hopes to generate new ideas, showcase design concepts, and stimulate interest in imagining the future of the city centre. Events will be held in a variety of city outdoor spaces, streets, laneways and venues to identify catalyst projects and explore design ideas for the city centre. In the City Botanic Gardens ‘Sunday reserved for you’ on 21st April and ‘A shot of green’ on Wednesday 24th April are some of the events planned and are the setting for innovative items of park furniture and other activities. A sitooterie (Scottish) is an outdoor space to sit… a place to enjoy nature. This Sitooter-i has been digitally designed for CNC fabrication with the ergonomics of reclining, lounging, just sitting or jumping around in mind. It was assembled by staff and students from Queensland University of Technology and is made from locally sourced plywood components which are easily dismantled for re-use elsewhere. But this Sitooter-i inspired by natural forms is also both physically and technologically interactive. Sensors record sound, light and temperature in their interactions with users. This data may be relayed as LED lights played in rhythm along frame edges or used by Brisbane City Council to assess frequency and style of use, perhaps revealing the effectiveness of its performance and the preferences of its users. Background: In recent years, there have been investigations concerning upper-limbs kinematics by various devices. The latest generation of smartphones often includes inertial sensors with subunits which can detect inertial kinematics. The use of smartphones is presented as a convenient and portable analysis method for studying kinematics in terms of angular mobility and linear acceleration Objective: The aim of this study was to study humerus kinematics through six physical properties that correspond to angular mobility and acceleration in the three axes of space, obtained by a smartphone. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited healthy young adult subjects. Descriptive and anthropometric independent variables related to age, gender, weight, size, and BMI were included. Six physical properties were included corresponding to two dependent variables for each of three special axes: mobility angle (degrees) and lineal acceleration (meters/seconds2), which were obtained thought the inertial measurement sensor embedded in the iPhone4 smartphone equipped with three two elements for the detection of kinematic variables: a gyroscope and an accelerometer. Apple uses an LIS302DL accelerometer in the iPhone4. The application used to obtain kinematic data was xSensor Pro, Crossbow Technology, Inc., available at the Apple AppStore. The iPhone4 has storage capacity of 20MB. The data-sampling rate was set to 32 Hz, and the data for each analytical task was transmitted as email for analysis and postprocessing The iPhone4 was placed in the right half of the body of each subject located in the middle third of the humerus slightly posterior snugly secured by a neoprene fixation belt. Tasks were explained concisely and clearly. The beginning and the end were decided by a verbal order by the researcher. Participants were placed standing, starting from neutral position, performing the following analytical tasks: 180º right shoulder abduction (eight repetitions) and, after a break of about 3 minutes, 180º right shoulder flexion (eight repetitions). Both tasks were performed with the elbow extended, wrist in neutral position and the palmar area of the hand toward the midline at the beginning and end of the movement. Results: A total of 11 subjects (8 men, 3 woman) were measured, whose mean of age was 24.7 years (SD = 4.22 years) and their average BMI was 22.64 Kg/m2 (SD = 2.29 Kg/m2). The mean of angular mobility collected by the smartphone was bigger in pitch axis for flexion (= 157.28°, SD= 12.35°) and abduction (= 151.71°, SD= 9.70°). With regard to acceleration, the highest peak mean value was shown in the Y motion axis during flexion (= 19.5°/s2, SD = 0.8°/s2) and abduction (= 19.4°/s2, SD = 0.8°/s2). Also, descriptive graphics of analytical tasks performed were obtained. Conclusions: This study shows how humerus contributes to upper-limb motion and it identified movement patterns. Therefore, it supports smartphone as a useful device to analyze upper-limb kinematics. Thanks to this study it´s possible to develop a simple application that facilitates the evaluation of the patient.

Attention has recently focussed on MgB2 superconductors (Tc~39K) which can be formed into wires with high material density and viable critical current densities (Jc)1. However, broader utilisation of this diboride and many others is likely to occur when facile synthesis for bulk applications is developed. To date, common synthesis methods include high temperature sintering of mixed elemental powders2, combustion synthesis3, mechano-chemical mixing with high temperature sintering4 and high pressure (~GPa region) with high temperature. In this work, we report on a lower temperature, moderate (<4MPa) pressure method to synthesise metal diborides.

Commercially viable carbon–neutral biodiesel production from microalgae has potential for replacing depleting petroleum diesel. The process of biodiesel production from microalgae involves harvesting, drying and extraction of lipids which are energy- and cost-intensive processes. The development of effective large-scale lipid extraction processes which overcome the complexity of microalgae cell structure is considered one of the most vital requirements for commercial production. Thus the aim of this work was to investigate suitable extraction methods with optimised conditions to progress opportunities for sustainable microalgal biodiesel production. In this study, the green microalgal species consortium, Tarong polyculture was used to investigate lipid extraction with hexane (solvent) under high pressure and variable temperature and biomass moisture conditions using an Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) method. The performance of high pressure solvent extraction was examined over a range of different process and sample conditions (dry biomass to water ratios (DBWRs): 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% and temperatures from 70 to 120 ºC, process time 5–15 min). Maximum total lipid yields were achieved at 50% and 75% sample dryness at temperatures of 90–120 ºC. We show that individual fatty acids (Palmitic acid C16:0; Stearic acid C18:0; Oleic acid C18:1; Linolenic acid C18:3) extraction optima are influenced by temperature and sample dryness, consequently affecting microalgal biodiesel quality parameters. Higher heating values and kinematic viscosity were compliant with biodiesel quality standards under all extraction conditions used. Our results indicate that biodiesel quality can be positively manipulated by selecting process extraction conditions that favour extraction of saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids over optimal extraction conditions for polyunsaturated fatty acids, yielding positive effects on cetane number and iodine values. Exceeding biodiesel standards for these two parameters opens blending opportunities with biodiesels that fall outside the minimal cetane and maximal iodine values.

A field oriented control (FOC) algorithm is simulated and implemented for use with a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). Rotor position is sensed using Hall effect switches on the stator because other hardware position sensors attached to the rotor may not be desirable or cost effective for certain applications. This places a limit on the resolution of position sensing – only a few Hall effect switches can be placed. In this simulation, three sensors are used and the position information is obtained at higher resolution by estimating it from the rotor dynamics, as shown in literature previously. This study compares the performance of the method with an incremental encoder using simulations. The FOC algorithm is implemented using Digital Motor Control (DMC) and IQ Texas Instruments libraries from a Simulink toolbox called Embedded Coder, and downloaded into a TI microcontroller (TMS320F28335) known as the Piccolo via Code Composer Studio (CCS).

This thesis is a population-based ecological study designed to investigate the issue of mortality displacement (or "harvesting" effect) in the assessment of temperature-related deaths in Brisbane, Australia. It examines the temperature impacts on mortality, and assesses the harvesting effects on the temperature–related deaths. This study contributes to the knowledge base of understanding the temperature-mortality relationship and assists in formulating and evaluating public health intervention strategies within the context of climate change.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the leading causative agent of urinary tract infections (UTI) in the developed world. Among the major virulence factors of UPEC, surface expressed adhesins mediate attachment and tissue tropism. UPEC strains typically possess a range of adhesins, with type 1 fimbriae and P fimbriae of the chaperone-usher class the best characterised. We previously identified and characterised F9 as a new chaperone-usher fimbrial type that mediates biofilm formation. However, the regulation and specific role of F9 fimbriae remained to be determined in the context of wild-type clinical UPEC strains. In this study we have assessed the distribution and genetic context of the f9 operon among diverse E. coli lineages and pathotypes and demonstrated that f9 genes are significantly more conserved in a UPEC strain collection in comparison to the well-defined E. coli reference (ECOR) collection. In the prototypic UPEC strain CFT073, the global regulator protein H-NS was identified as a transcriptional repressor of f9 gene expression at 37°C through its ability to bind directly to the f9 promoter region. F9 fimbriae expression was demonstrated at 20°C, representing the first evidence of functional F9 fimbriae expression by wild-type E. coli. Finally, glycan array analysis demonstrated that F9 fimbriae recognise and bind to terminal Galβ1-3GlcNAc structures.
