Sandwich panels comprising steel facings and a polystyrene foam core are increasingly used as roof and wall claddings in buildings in Australia. When they are subjected to loads causing bending and/or axial compression, the steel plate elements of their profiled facing are susceptible to local buckling. However, when compared to panels with no foam core, they demonstrate significantly improved local buckling behaviour because they are supported by foam. In order to quantify such improvements and to validate the use of available design buckling stress formulae, an investigation using finite element analyses and laboratory experiments was carried out on steel plates that are commonly used in Australia of varying yield stress and thickness supported by a polystyrene foam core. This paper presents the details of this investigation, the buckling results and their comparison with available design buckling formulae.

Neo-angiogenesis during neoplastic growth involves endothelial mitogenic and migration stimuli produced by cancer or tumour stromal cells. Although this active angiogenesis takes place in the tumour periphery, the process of vessel growth and survival in inner areas and its clinical role remain largely unexplored. The present study compared the microvessel score (MS) as well as the single endothelial cell score (ECS) in the invading edge and in inner areas of non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs). Three different patterns of vascular growth were distinguished: the edvin (edge vs. inner) type 1, where a low MS was observed in both peripheral and inner tumour areas; the edvin type 2, where a high MS was noted in the invading front but a low MS in inner areas; and the edvin type 3, where both peripheral and inner tumour areas had a high MS. The ECS was high in the invading edge in edvin type 2 and 3 cases and was sharply decreased in both types in inner areas, suggesting that endothelial cell migration is unlikely to contribute to the angiogenic process in areas away from the tumour front. Expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and of thymidine phosphorylase (TP) was associated with a high MS in the invading edge. VEGF was associated with a high MS in inner areas (edvin 3), while TP expression was associated with edvin type 2, showing that VEGF (and not TP) contributes to the preservation of the inner vasculature. Both edvin type 2 and 3 cases showed an increased incidence of node metastasis, but edvin type 3 cases had a poorer prognosis, even in the N1-stage group. The present study suggests that tumour factors regulating angiogenesis and vascular survival are not identical. A possible method is reported to quantify these two parameters by comparing the MS in the invading edge and inner areas (edvin types). This observation may contribute to the evaluation of the effectiveness of different therapeutic approaches, namely vascular targeting vs. anti-angiogenesis. Non-linear finite deformations of articular cartilages under physiological loading conditions can be attributed to hyperelastic behavior. This paper contains experimental results of indentation tests in finite deformation and proposes an empirical based new generalized hyperelastic constitutive model to account for strain-rate dependency for humeral head cartilage tissues. The generalized model is based on existing hyperelastic constitutive relationships that are extensively used to represent biological tissues in biomechanical literature. The experimental results were obtained for three loading velocities, corresponding to low (1x10-3 s-1), moderate and high strain-rates (1x10-1 s-1), which represent physiological loading rates that are experienced in daily activities such as lifting, holding objects and sporting activities. Hyperelastic material parameters were identified by non linear curve fitting procedure. Analysis demonstrated that the material behavior of cartilage can be effectively decoupled into strain-rate independent(elastic) and dependent parts. Further, experiments conducted using different indenters indicated that the parameters obtained are significantly affected by the indenter size, potentially due to structural inhomogeneity of the tissue. The hyperelastic constitutive model developed in this paper opens a new avenue for the exploration of material properties of cartilage tissues.

The study examines the illness behaviour of patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The Illness Behaviour Questionnaire (IBQ) the twenty-eight version of the General Health Questionnaire (GBQ-28), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were administered to forty patients with a diagnosis of CFS. The results revealed that CFS patients in comparison with general practice patients, scored significantly higher on the IBQ sub-scales of General Hypochonriasis, t(188) = 5.2, p < 0.001 and Disease Conviction, t(188) = 13.28, p < 0.001 but lower on the Psychological/Somatic sub-scale, t(188) = -5.88, p < 0.001. The CFS and psychiatric patients did not differ significantly on the general hypochondriasis sub-scale. Results of the GHQ-28 revealed 66.7% of the CFS patients scored above the cut-off for psychiatric morbidity. In comparison to a previous study of CFS patients [1], the current findings indicate a significantly higher score on general hypochondriasis. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Passenger experience has become a major factor that influences the success of an airport. In this context, passenger flow simulation has been used in designing and managing airports. However, most passenger flow simulations failed to consider the group dynamics when developing passenger flow models. In this paper, an agent-based model is presented to simulate passenger behaviour at the airport check-in and evacuation process. The simulation results show that the passenger behaviour can have significant influences on the performance and utilisation of services in airport terminals. The model was created using AnyLogic software and its parameters were initialised using recent research data published in the literature.

Hypoxia and the development and remodeling of blood vessels and connective tissue in granulation tissue that forms in a wound gap following full-thickness skin incision in the rat were examined as a function of time. A 1.5 cm-long incisional wound was created in rat groin skin and the opposed edges sutured together. Wounds were harvested between 3 days and 16 weeks and hypoxia, percent vascular volume, cell proliferation and apoptosis, α-smooth muscle actin, vascular endothelial growth factor-A, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2, and transforming growth factor-β 1 expression in granulation tissue were then assessed. Hypoxia was evident between 3 and 7 days while maximal cell proliferation at 3 days (123.6 ± 22.2 cells/mm 2, p < 0.001 when compared with normal skin) preceded the peak percent vascular volume that occurred at 7 days (15.83 ± 1.10%, p < 0.001 when compared with normal skin). The peak in cell apoptosis occurred at 3 weeks (12.1 ± 1.3 cells/mm 2, p < 0.001 when compared with normal skin). Intense α-smooth muscle actin labeling in myofibroblasts was evident at 7 and 10 days. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor-A were detectable until 2 and 3 weeks, respectively, while transforming growth factor-β 1 protein was detectable in endothelial cells and myofibroblasts until 3-4 weeks and in the extracellular matrix for 16 weeks. Incisional wound granulation tissue largely developed within 3-7 days in the presence of hypoxia. Remodeling, marked by a decline in the percent vascular volume and increased cellular apoptosis, occurred largely in the absence of detectable hypoxia. The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-A, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2, and transforming growth factor-β 1 is evident prior, during, and after the peak of vascular volume reflecting multiple roles for these factors during wound healing.

A combined experimental and numerical program was conducted to study the in-plane shear behaviour of hollow concrete masonry panels containing reinforced grout cores. This paper is focused on the numerical program. A two dimensional macromodelling strategy was used to simulate the behaviour of the confined masonry (CM) shear panels. Both the unreinforced masonry and the confining element were modelled using macromasonry properties and the steel reinforcement was modelled as an embedded truss element located within the grout using perfectly bonded constraint. The FE model reproduced key behaviours observed in the experiments, including the shear strength, the deformation and the crack patterns of the unconfined and confined masonry panels. The predictions of the validated model were used to evaluate the existing in-plane shear expressions available in the national masonry standards and research publications.

The aim of the research was two-fold: firstly, to investigate strategies used by Australian parents to encourage desirable child behaviours and to decrease undesirable behaviours; secondly, to determine the acceptability and perceived usefulness to parents of various strategies. The research encompassed two studies. In the first study, 152 parents of children aged under six years completed questionnaires to identify their disciplinary practices. In Study 2, 129 parents reported on the acceptability and perceived effectiveness of various parenting strategies (modelling, ignoring, rewarding and physical punishment) for influencing child behaviour. Most parents in Study 1 reported using techniques consistent with positive parenting strategies. The use of physical punishment was also reported, but predominantly as a secondary method of discipline. In Study 2, the techniques of modelling and rewarding were found to be more acceptable to parents than were ignoring and smacking. The findings highlight the need to raise parental awareness and acceptance of a broader range of positive ways to manage child behaviour.

Silicon thin films were synthesized simultaneously on single-crystal silicon and glass substrates by lowpressure, thermally nonequilibrium, high-density inductively coupled plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition from the silane precursor gas without any additional hydrogen dilution in a broad range of substrate temperatures from 100 to 500 °C. The effect of the substrate temperature on the morphological, structural and optical properties of the synthesized silicon thin films is systematically studied by X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It is shown that the formation of nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) occurs when the substrate temperature is higher than 200 °C and that all the deposited nc-Si films have a preferential growth along the (111) direction. However, the mean grain size of the (111) orientation slightly and gradually decreases while the mean grain size of the (220) orientation shows a monotonous increase with the increased substrate temperature from 200 to 500 °C. It is also found that the crystal volume fraction of the synthesized nc-Si thin films has a maximum value of ∼69.1% at a substrate temperature of 300 rather than 500 °C. This rather unexpected result is interpreted through the interplay of thermokinetic surface diffusion and hydrogen termination effects. Furthermore, we have also shown that with the increased substrate temperature from 100 to 500 °C, the optical bandgap is reduced while the growth rates tend to increase. The maximum rates of change of the optical bandgap and the growth rates occur when the substrate temperature is increased from 400 to 500 °C. These results are highly relevant to the development of photovoltaic thin-film solar cells, thin-film transistors, and flat-panel displays.

SupaCee section is one of the cold-formed steel members which is increasingly used in the construction sector. It is characterized by unique ribbed web and curved lip elements, and is claimed to be more economical with extra strength than the traditional channel sections. SupaCee sections are widely used in Australia as floor joists, bearers, purlins and girts. Many experimental and numerical studies have been carried out to evaluate the behaviour and design of conventional channel beams subject to web crippling. To date, however, no investigation has been conducted into the web crippling behaviour and strength of SupaCee sections. Current cold-formed steel design equations do not include any design procedures for SupaCee sections. Hence experimental studies were conducted to assess the web crippling behaviour and strengths of SupaCee sections under ETF and ITF load cases. Thirty six web crippling tests were conducted and the capacity results were compared with the predictions from the AS/NZS 4600 and AISI design rules developed for conventional channel sections. Comparison of ultimate web crippling capacities from tests showed that AS/NZS 4600 and AISI design equations are unconservative for SupaCee sections under ETF load case, but are overly conservative for ITF load case. Hence new equations were proposed to determine the web crippling capacities of SupaCee sections based on the experimental results from this study. Suitable design rules were also developed within the direct strength method format. This paper presents the details of this experimental study of SupaCee sections subject to web crippling and the results.

A better understanding of the behaviour of prepared cane and bagasse, and the ability to model the mechanical behaviour of bagasse as it is squeezed in a milling unit to extract juice, would help identify how to improve the current process, for example to reduce final bagasse moisture. Previous investigations have proven that juice flow through bagasse obeys Darcy’s permeability law, that the grip of the rough surface of the grooves on the bagasse can be represented by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion for soils, and that the internal mechanical behaviour of the bagasse is critical state behaviour similar to that for sand and clay. Current Finite Element Models (FEM) available in commercial software have adequate permeability models. However, no commercially available software seems to contain an adequate mechanical model for bagasse. The same software contains a few material models for soil and other materials, while the coding of hundreds of developed models for soil and other materials remains confidential at universities and government research centres. Progress has been made in the last ten years towards implementing a mechanical model for bagasse in finite element software code. This paper builds on that progress and carries out a further step towards obtaining an adequate material model. The fifth and final loading condition outlined previously, shearing of heavily over-consolidated bagasse, is outlined.

A numerical time-dependent model of an active magnetic regenerator (AMR) was developed for cooling in the kilowatt range. Earlier numerical models have been mostly developed for cooling power in the 0.4 kW range. In contrast, this paper reports the applicability of magnetic refrigeration to the 50 kW range. A packed bed active magnetic regenerator was modelled and the influence of parameters such as geometry and operating parameters were studied for different geometries. The pressure drop for AMR bed length and particle diameter was also studied. High cooling power and coefficient of performance (COP) were achieved by optimization of the diameter of the magnetocaloric powder particles and operating frequency. The optimum operating conditions of the AMR for a cooling capacity of 50 kW was determined for a temperature span of 15 K. The predicted coefficient of performance (COP) was found to be ∼6, making it an attractive alternative to vapour compression systems.

The synthesis of alternating copolymers of tetraalkylindenofluorene with bithiophene and terthiophene using Suzuki polycondensation route is reported. We report on the optical and electrochemical properties of these copolymers. AFM analysis of the microscopic morphology of thin deposits showed that the copolymer with terthiophene units produced the more ordered films, with well-defined fibrillar structures, resulting from highly-regular dense packing due to strong π-π interchain interactions, in contrast to the amorphous bithiophene copolymer. Upon testing these materials in FETs the terthienyl copolymers displayed the higher charge mobilities among the studied compounds, with values of over 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 being obtained.

In recent times, blended polymers have shown a lot of promise in terms of easy processability in different shapes and forms. In the present work, polyaniline emeraldine base (PANi-EB) was doped with camphor sulfonic acid (CSA) and combined with the conducting polymer polyfluorene (PF) as well as the insulating polymer polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to synthesize CSA doped PANi-PF and PANi-PVC blended polymers. It is well known that PANi when doped with CSA becomes highly conducting. However, its poor mechanical properties, such as low tensile, compressive, and flexural strength render PANi a non-ideal material to be processed for its various practical applications, such as electromagnetic shielding, anti-corrosion shielding, photolithography and microelectronic devices etc. Thus the search for polymers which are easily processable and are capable of showing high conductivity still continues. PANi-PVC blend was prepared, which showed low conductivity which is limiting factor for certain applications. Therefore, another processable polymer PF was chosen as conducting matrix. Conducting PF can be easily processed into various shapes and forms. Therefore, a blend mixture was prepared by using PANi and PF through the use of CSA as a counter ion which forms a "bridge" between the two polymeric components of the inter-polymer complex. Two blended polymers have been synthesized and investigated for their conductivity behaviour. It was observed that the blended film of CSA doped PANi-PVC showed a room temperature electrical conductivity of 2.8 × 10-7 S/cm where as the blended film made by CSA doped PANi with conducting polymer PF showed a room temperature conductivity of 1.3 × 10-5 S/cm. Blended films were irradiated with 100 MeV silicon ions with a view to increase their conductivity with a fluence ranging from 1011 ions to 1013 per cm2 from 15 UD Pelletron accelerator at NSC, New Delhi.
