Strengthening of steel structures using externally-bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymers ‘CFRP’ is a rapidly developing technique. This paper describes the behaviour of axially loaded flat steel plates strengthened using carbon fibre reinforced polymer sheets. Two steel plates were joined together with adhesive and followed by the application of carbon fibre sheet double strap joint with different bond lengths. The behaviour of the specimens was further investigated by using nonlinear finite element analysis to predict the failure modes and load capacity. In this study, bond failure is the dominant failure mode for normal modulus (240 GPa) CFRP bonding which closely matched the results of finite elements. The predicted ultimate loads from the FE analysis are found to be in good agreement with experimental values.

This paper emphasizes material nonlinear effects on composite beams with recourse to the plastic hinge method. Numerous combinations of steel and concrete sections form arbitrary composite sections. Secondly, the material properties of composite beams vary remarkably across its section from ductile steel to brittle concrete. Thirdly, concrete is weak in tension, so composite section changes are dependent on load distribution. To this end, the plastic zone approach is convenient for inelastic analysis of composite sections that can evaluate member resistance, including material nonlinearities, by routine numerical integration with respect to every fiber across the composite section. As a result, many researchers usually adopt the plastic zone approach for numerical inelastic analyses of composite structures. On the other hand, the plastic hinge method describes nonlinear material behaviour of an overall composite section integrally. Consequently, proper section properties for use in plastic hinge spring stiffness are required to represent the material behaviour across the arbitrary whole composite section. In view of numerical efficiency and convergence, the plastic hinge method is superior to the plastic zone method. Therefore, based on the plastic hinge approach, how to incorporate the material nonlinearities of the arbitrary composite section into the plastic hinge stiffness formulation becomes a prime objective of the present paper. The partial shear connection in this paper is by virtue of the effective flexural rigidity as AISC 1993 [American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Load and resistance factor design specifications. 2nd ed., Chicago; 1993]. Nonlinear behaviour of different kinds of composite beam is investigated in this paper, including two simply supported composite beams, a cantilever and a two span continuous composite beam.

This paper presents a nonlinear finite element (FE) model for the analysis of very high strength (VHS) steel hollow sections wrapped by high modulus carbon fibre rein forced polymer (CFRP) sheets. The bond strength of CFRP wrapped VHS circular steel hollow section under tension is investigated using the FE model. The three dimensional FE model by Nonlinear static analysis has been carried out by Strand 7 finite element software. The model is validated by the experimental data obtained from Fawzia et al [1]. A detail parametric study has been performed to examine the effect of number of CFRP layers, different diameters of VHS steel tube and different bond lengths of CFRP sheet. The analytical model developed by Fawzia et al. [1] has been used to determine the load carrying capacity of different diameters of CFRP strengthened VHS steel tube by using the capacity from each layer of CFRP sheet. The results from FE model have found in reasonable agreement with the analytical model developed by Fawzia et al [1]. This validation was necessary because the analytical model by Fawzia et al [1] was developed by using only one diameter of VHS steel tube and fixed (five) number of CFRP layers. It can be concluded that the developed analytical model is valid for CFRP strengthened VHS steel tubes with diameter range of 38mm to 100mm and CFRP layer range of 3 to 5 layers. Based on the results it can also be concluded that the effective bond length is consistent for different diameters of steel tubes and different layers of CFRP. Three layers of CFRP is considered most effective wrapping scheme due to the cost effectiveness. Finally the distribution of longitudinal and hoop stress has been determined by the finite element model for different diameters of CFRP strengthened VHS steel tube.

The deep transverse metatarsal ligaments (DTML) play an important role in stabilizing the metatarsal bones and manipulating foot transverse arch deformation. However, the biomechanical research about DTML in the foot maneuver is quite few. Due to the difficulties and lack of better measurement technology for these ligaments experimental monitor, the load transfer mechanism and internal stress state also hadn't been well addressed. The purpose of this study was to develop a detailing foot finite element model including DTML tissues, to investigate the mechanical response of DTML during the landing condition. The DTML was considered as hyperelastic material model was used to represent the nonlinear and nearly incompressible nature of the ligament tissue. From the simulation results, it is clearly to find that the peak maiximal principal stress of DTML was between the third and fourth metatarsals. Meanwhile, it seems the DTML in the middle position experienced higher tension than the sides DTML.

Introduction: Bone mineral density (BMD) is currently the preferred surrogate for bone strength in clinical practice. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computer simulation technique that can predict the deformation of a structure when a load is applied, providing a measure of stiffness (Nmm−1). Finite element analysis of X-ray images (3D-FEXI) is a FEA technique whose analysis is derived froma single 2D radiographic image. Methods: 18 excised human femora had previously been quantitative computed tomography scanned, from which 2D BMD-equivalent radiographic images were derived, and mechanically tested to failure in a stance-loading configuration. A 3D proximal femur shape was generated from each 2D radiographic image and used to construct 3D-FEA models. Results: The coefficient of determination (R2%) to predict failure load was 54.5% for BMD and 80.4% for 3D-FEXI. Conclusions: This ex vivo study demonstrates that 3D-FEXI derived from a conventional 2D radiographic image has the potential to significantly increase the accuracy of failure load assessment of the proximal femur compared with that currently achieved with BMD. This approach may be readily extended to routine clinical BMD images derived by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Crown Copyright © 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of IPEM. A deconvolution method that combines nanoindentation and finite element analysis was developed to determine elastic modulus of thin coating layer in a coating-substrate bilayer system. In this method, the nanoindentation experiments were conducted to obtain the modulus of both the bilayer system and the substrate. The finite element analysis was then applied to deconvolve the elastic modulus of the coating. The results demonstrated that the elastic modulus obtained using the developed method was in good agreement with that reported in literature.

Auto rickshaws (3-wheelers) are the most sought after transport among the urban and rural poor in India. The assembly of the vehicle involves assemblies of several major components. The L-angle is the component that connects the front panel with the vehicle floor. Current L-angle part has been observed to experience permanent deformation failure over period of time. This paper studies the effect of the addition of stiffeners on the L-angle to increase the strength of the component. A physical model of the L-angle was reversed engineered and modelled in CAD before static loading analysis were carried out on the model using finite element analysis. The modified L-angle fitted with stiffeners was shown to be able to withstand more load compare to previous design.
