We describe the evolution of a bistable chemical reaction in a closed two-dimensional chaotic laminar flow, from a localized initial disturbance. When the fluid mixing is sufficiently slow, the disturbance may spread and eventually occupy the entire fluid domain. By contrast, rapid mixing tends to dilute the initial state and so extinguish the disturbance. Such a dichotomy is well known. However, we report here a hitherto apparently unremarked intermediate case, a persistent highly localized disturbance. Such a localized state arises when the Damkoehler number is great enough to sustain a "hot spot," but not so great as to lead to global spread. We show that such a disturbance is located in the neighborhood of an unstable periodic orbit of the flow, and we describe some limited aspects of its behavior using a reduced, lamellar model. Neural field models of firing rate activity typically take the form of integral equations with space-dependent axonal delays. Under natural assumptions on the synaptic connectivity we show how one can derive an equivalent partial differential equation (PDE) model that properly treats the axonal delay terms of the integral formulation. Our analysis avoids the so-called long-wavelength approximation that has previously been used to formulate PDE models for neural activity in two spatial dimensions. Direct numerical simulations of this PDE model show instabilities of the homogeneous steady state that are in full agreement with a Turing instability analysis of the original integral model. We discuss the benefits of such a local model and its usefulness in modeling electrocortical activity. In particular we are able to treat "patchy'" connections, whereby a homogeneous and isotropic system is modulated in a spatially periodic fashion. In this case the emergence of a "lattice-directed" traveling wave predicted by a linear instability analysis is confirmed by the numerical simulation of an appropriate set of coupled PDEs. The dynamics of intracellular Ca²⁺ is driven by random events called Ca²⁺ puffs, in which Ca²⁺ is liberated from intracellular stores. We show that the emergence of Ca²⁺ puffs can be mapped to an escape process. The mean first passage times that correspond to the stochastic fraction of puff periods are computed from a novel master equation and two Fokker-Planck equations. Our results demonstrate that the mathematical modeling of Ca²⁺ puffs has to account for the discrete character of the Ca²⁺ release sites and does not permit a continuous description of the number of open channels.

We present a novel approach to the dynamics of reactions of diffusing chemical species with species fixed in space e.g. by binding to a membrane. The non-diffusing reaction partners are clustered in areas with a diameter smaller than the diffusion length of the diffusing partner. The activated fraction of the fixed species determines the size of an active sub-region of the cluster. Linear stability analysis reveals that diffusion is one of the ma jor determinants of the stability of the dynamics. We illustrate the model concept with Ca²⁺ dynamics in living cells, which has release channels as fixed reaction partners. Our results suggest that spatial and temporal structures in intracellular Ca²⁺ dynamics are caused by fluctuations due to the small number of channels per cluster.

We define Landau quasiparticles within the Gutzwiller variational theory and derive their dispersion relation for general multiband Hubbard models in the limit of large spatial dimensions D. Thereby we reproduce our previous calculations which were based on a phenomenological effective single-particle Hamiltonian. For the one-band Hubbard model we calculate the frst-order corrections in 1/D and find that the corrections to the quasiparticle dispersions are small in three dimensions. They may be largely absorbed in a rescaling of the total bandwidth, unless the system is close to half band filling. Therefore, the Gutzwiller theory in the limit of large dimensions provides quasiparticle bands which are suitable for a comparison with real, three-dimensional Fermi liquids.

Ultra-slow fluctuations (0.01-0.1 Hz) are a feature of intrinsic brain activity of as yet unclear origin. We propose a candidate mechanism based on retrograde endocannabinoid signaling in a synaptically coupled network of excitatory neurons. This is known to cause depolarization-induced suppression of excitation (DISE), which we model phenomenologically. We construct emergent network oscillations in a globally coupled network and show that for strong synaptic coupling DISE can lead to a synchronized population burst at the frequencies of resting brain rhythms.
