Through bioturbation, the macrofauna mediate chemical, physical and biological processes in marine benthic ecosystems. Because of the importance of bioturbation as ecosystem mediator, various studies have been conducted on bioturbation intensity and depth, and the relation of bioturbation processes to environmental condition and ecosystem state. This thesis builds on those previous studies, using a standard field and analytical protocol and by expanding the geographical scale to three climatic regions along Canada’s East Coast and Arctic margins, the Arctic Archipelago, the coastal Subarctic (Labrador Fjords), and the temperate continental climate zone (Gulf of Maine and adjacent Scotian shelf/slope). This Ph.D. study provides a comprehensive assessment of environmental influences on bioturbation along gradients in latitude and ocean depth. Bioturbation intensity, mixing depth, and bioturbation structures were studied in relation to the quantity and quality of potential food sources (organic matter) and substrate characteristics to gain an understanding of the environmental controls on bioturbation in these regions. The three main research chapters of this thesis are divided based on the contrasting climatic and geographical regions studied. The analytical approach included seabed sampling with a boxcorer, describing the sedimentary fabric and bioturbation structures by X-radiography, estimating bioturbation intensity and depth applying a biodiffusion model to particle tracer profiles of ²¹⁰Pbₓs, ²²⁸Thₓs, ²³⁴Thₓs, and chlorophyll-a, and analyzing benthic organic matter and substrate characteristics. Strong regional and cross-climatic relations of bioturbation processes with combinations of environmental factors were observed. In particular, bioturbation depth and the vertical extent of bioturbation structures responded to the environmental patterns observed and, therefore, represented potentially applicable predictors of environmental conditions and ecosystem state. The results of this Ph.D. study may be further extended to other geographical regions with similar environmental characteristics to predict the effects of benthic habitat alterations through environmental stresses on a global scale. Integrated with biological data produced by fellow CHONe scientists the presented data may provide valuable information about functional roles of macrofaunal species and community traits in marine benthic ecosystems along Canada’s extensive East Coast and Arctic margins.

This research focuses on developing active suspension optimal controllers for two linear and non-linear half-car models. A detailed comparison between quarter-car and half-car active suspension approaches is provided for improving two important scenarios in vehicle dynamics, i.e. ride quality and road holding. Having used a half-car vehicle model, heave and pitch motion are analyzed for those scenarios, with cargo mass as a variable. The governing equations of the system are analysed in a multi-energy domain package, i.e., 20-Sim. System equations are presented in the bond-graph language to facilitate calculation of energy usage. The results present optimum set of gains for both ride quality and road holding scenarios are the gains which has derived when maximum allowable cargo mass is considered for the vehicle. The energy implications of substituting passive suspension units with active ones are studied by considering not only the energy used by the actuator, but also the reduction in energy lost through the passive damper. Energy analysis showed less energy was dissipated in shock absorbers when either quarter-car or half-car controllers were used instead of passive suspension. It was seen that more energy could be saved by using half-car active controllers than the quarter-car ones. Results also proved that using active suspension units, whether quarter-car or half-car based, under those realistic limitations is energy-efficient and suggested.

Collaborative sharing of information is becoming much more needed technique to achieve complex goals in today's fast-paced tech-dominant world. Personal Health Record (PHR) system has become a popular research area for sharing patients informa- tion very quickly among health professionals. PHR systems store and process sensitive information, which should have proper security mechanisms to protect patients' private data. Thus, access control mechanisms of the PHR should be well-defined. Secondly, PHRs should be stored in encrypted form. Cryptographic schemes offering a more suitable solution for enforcing access policies based on user attributes are needed for this purpose. Attribute-based encryption can resolve these problems, we propose a patient-centric framework that protects PHRs against untrusted service providers and malicious users. In this framework, we have used Ciphertext Policy Attribute Based Encryption scheme as an efficient cryptographic technique, enhancing security and privacy of the system, as well as enabling access revocation. Patients can encrypt their PHRs and store them on untrusted storage servers. They also maintain full control over access to their PHR data by assigning attribute-based access control to selected data users, and revoking unauthorized users instantly. In order to evaluate our system, we implemented CP-ABE library and web services as part of our framework. We also developed an android application based on the framework that allows users to register into the system, encrypt their PHR data and upload to the server, and at the same time authorized users can download PHR data and decrypt it. Finally, we present experimental results and performance analysis. It shows that the deployment of the proposed system would be practical and can be applied into practice.

The direct drive point absorber is a robust and efficient system for wave energy harvesting, where the linear generator represents the most complex part of the system. Therefore, its design and optimization are crucial tasks. The tubular shape of a linear generator’s magnetic circuit offers better permanent magnet flux encapsulation and reduction in radial forces on the translator due to its symmetry. A double stator topology can improve the power density of the linear tubular machine. Common designs employ a set of aligned stators on each side of a translator with radially magnetized permanent magnets. Such designs require doubling the amount of permanent magnet material and lead to an increase in the cogging force. The design presented in this thesis utilizes a translator with buried axially magnetized magnets and axially shifted positioning of the two stators such that no additional magnetic material, compared to single side machine, is required. In addition to the conservation of magnetic material, a significant improvement in the cogging force occurs in the two phase topology, while the double sided three phase system produces more power at the cost of a small increase in the cogging force. The analytical and the FEM models of the generator are described and their results compared to the experimental results. In general, the experimental results compare favourably with theoretical predictions. However, the experimentally observed permanent magnet flux leakage in the double sided machine is larger than predicted theoretically, which can be justified by the limitations in the prototype fabrication and resulting deviations from the theoretical analysis.

Geometric frustration occurs in the rare earth pyrochlores due to magnetic rare earth ions occupying the vertices of the network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. In this research, we have two parts. In the first one we study the phase transition to the magnetically ordered state at low temperature in the pyrochlore Er₂Ti₂O₇. The molecular field method was used to solve this problem. In the second part, we analyse the crystal electric field Hamiltonian for the rare earth sites. The rather large degeneracy of the angular momentum J of the rare earth ion is lifted by the crystal electric field due to the neighboring ions in the crystal. By rewriting the Stevens operators in the crystal electric field Hamiltonian ᴴCEF in terms of charge quadruple operators, we can identify unstable order parameters in ᴴCEF . These may be related to lattice instabilities in Tb₂Ti₂O₇.

This study investigates teacher‟s cultural values and accountability in Nigeria. A questionnaire developed by Professor Rosenblatt (University of Haifa, Israel) was used to gather quantitative data from 483 secondary teachers across Oyo, Osun, Ogun, and Lagos States in Southwest Nigeria. Data collected were analyzed using percentages, descriptive statistics, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings show that Nigerian teachers have high dispositions towards both bureaucratic (external) and internal (professional) accountability and their scores for internal accountability (M= 4.4286; SD= 0.5726) were higher than their scores for external accountability (M= 3.9759; SD = 0.5575). Geographical locations made a significant difference in the scores. Teachers from urban and suburban areas demonstrate higher scores than teachers from the rural in both bureaucratic (external) and internal (professional) accountability

In longitudinal data analysis, our primary interest is in the regression parameters for the marginal expectations of the longitudinal responses; the longitudinal correlation parameters are of secondary interest. The joint likelihood function for longitudinal data is challenging, particularly for correlated discrete outcome data. Marginal modeling approaches such as generalized estimating equations (GEEs) have received much attention in the context of longitudinal regression. These methods are based on the estimates of the first two moments of the data and the working correlation structure. The confidence regions and hypothesis tests are based on the asymptotic normality. The methods are sensitive to misspecification of the variance function and the working correlation structure. Because of such misspecifications, the estimates can be inefficient and inconsistent, and inference may give incorrect results. To overcome this problem, we propose an empirical likelihood (EL) procedure based on a set of estimating equations for the parameter of interest and discuss its characteristics and asymptotic properties. We also provide an algorithm based on EL principles for the estimation of the regression parameters and the construction of a confidence region for the parameter of interest. We extend our approach to variable selection for highdimensional longitudinal data with many covariates. In this situation it is necessary to identify a submodel that adequately represents the data. Including redundant variables may impact the model’s accuracy and efficiency for inference. We propose a penalized empirical likelihood (PEL) variable selection based on GEEs; the variable selection and the estimation of the coefficients are carried out simultaneously. We discuss its characteristics and asymptotic properties, and present an algorithm for optimizing PEL. Simulation studies show that when the model assumptions are correct, our method performs as well as existing methods, and when the model is misspecified, it has clear advantages. We have applied the method to two case examples.

In this thesis, research for tsunami remote sensing using the Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) delay-Doppler maps (DDMs) is presented. Firstly, a process for simulating GNSS-R DDMs of a tsunami-dominated sea sur- face is described. In this method, the bistatic scattering Zavorotny-Voronovich (Z-V) model, the sea surface mean square slope model of Cox and Munk, and the tsunami- induced wind perturbation model are employed. The feasibility of the Cox and Munk model under a tsunami scenario is examined by comparing the Cox and Munk model- based scattering coefficient with the Jason-1 measurement. A good consistency be- tween these two results is obtained with a correlation coefficient of 0.93. After con- firming the applicability of the Cox and Munk model for a tsunami-dominated sea, this work provides the simulations of the scattering coefficient distribution and the corresponding DDMs of a fixed region of interest before and during the tsunami. Fur- thermore, by subtracting the simulation results that are free of tsunami from those with presence of tsunami, the tsunami-induced variations in scattering coefficients and DDMs can be clearly observed. Secondly, a scheme to detect tsunamis and estimate tsunami parameters from such tsunami-dominant sea surface DDMs is developed. As a first step, a procedure to de- termine tsunami-induced sea surface height anomalies (SSHAs) from DDMs is demon- strated and a tsunami detection precept is proposed. Subsequently, the tsunami parameters (wave amplitude, direction and speed of propagation, wavelength, and the tsunami source location) are estimated based upon the detected tsunami-induced SSHAs. In application, the sea surface scattering coefficients are unambiguously re- trieved by employing the spatial integration approach (SIA) and the dual-antenna technique. Next, the effective wind speed distribution can be restored from the scat- tering coefficients. Assuming all DDMs are of a tsunami-dominated sea surface, the tsunami-induced SSHAs can be derived with the knowledge of background wind speed distribution. In addition, the SSHA distribution resulting from the tsunami-free DDM (which is supposed to be zero) is considered as an error map introduced during the overall retrieving stage and is utilized to mitigate such errors from influencing sub- sequent SSHA results. In particular, a tsunami detection procedure is conducted to judge the SSHAs to be truly tsunami-induced or not through a fitting process, which makes it possible to decrease the false alarm. After this step, tsunami parameter estimation is proceeded based upon the fitted results in the former tsunami detec- tion procedure. Moreover, an additional method is proposed for estimating tsunami propagation velocity and is believed to be more desirable in real-world scenarios. The above-mentioned tsunami-dominated sea surface DDM simulation, tsunami detection precept and parameter estimation have been tested with simulated data based on the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman tsunami event.

In this thesis we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an equitably ℓ-colourable balanced incomplete block design for any positive integer ℓ > 2. In particular, we present a method for constructing non-trivial equitably ℓ-colourable BIBDs and prove that these designs are the only non-trivial equitably ℓ-colourable BIBDs that exist. We also observe that every equitable ℓ-colouring of a BIBD yields both an equalised ℓ-colouring and a proper 2-colouring of the same BIBD. We also discuss generalisations of these concepts including open questions for further research. The main results presented in this thesis also appear in [7].

This thesis comprises some studies on the Weyl, Vaidya and Weyl distorted Schwarzschild (WDS) spacetimes. The main focal areas are : a) construction of near horizon metric(NHM) for WDS spacetime and subsequently a "stretched horizon" prescribed by the membrane formalism for black holes, b) application of membrane formalism and construction of stretched horizons for Vaidya spacetime and c) using the thin shell formalism to construct an asymptotically flat spacetime with a Weyl interior where the construction does not violate energy conditions. For a), a standard formalism developed in [1] has been used wherein the metric is expanded as a Taylor series in ingoing Gaussian null coordinates with the affine parameter as the expansion parameter. This expansion is used to construct a timelike "stretched horizon" just outside the true horizon to facilitate some membrane formalism studies, the theory for which was first introduced in [2]. b) applies the membrane formalism to Vaidya spacetime and also extends a part of the work done in [1] in which event horizon candidates were located perturbatively. Here, we locate stretched horizons in close proximity to every event horizon candidate located in [1]. c) is an attempt to induce Weyl distortions with a thin shell of matter in an asymptotically flat spacetime without violating energy conditions.

The Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua, differs from many teleosts in that its heart does not respond to adrenergic stimulation, and is more capable of maintaining function during acute temperature changes. To examine if differences in intracellular calcium mobilization are associated with these atypical responses, confocal microscopy was used to study the calcium handling of cardiac cells from Atlantic cod vs. steelhead trout at their acclimation temperature (10ºC), or subjected to acute temperature changes (to 4 and 16ºC), while being stimulated across a range of frequencies (10 – 110 min⁻¹). In addition, cells were tested with and without tonic (10 nM) levels of adrenaline at 10ºC, and pharmacological blockers were used to study the relative contributions of the L-type Ca²⁺ channel, sarcoplasmic reticulum and Na+/Ca²⁺ exchanger to the Ca²⁺ transient. Consistent with previous in vitro and in situ studies, there were few significant effects of adrenaline on the Ca²⁺ transient of cod cardiomyocytes, yet adrenaline had significant positive inotropic effects on trout cardiomyocytes. At 10ºC, peak Ca²⁺ (F/F₀) only differed between the two species at low stimulation frequencies (10, 30 min-1), with trout F/F₀ 25-35% higher. In contrast, the time to peak Ca²⁺ and the time to half relaxation were both shorter (by 10 – 35% across frequencies) in cod. Acute temperature changes caused a shift in the Ca²⁺ - frequency relationship in both species, with F/F₀ values higher for trout at low frequencies (< 70 min⁻¹) at 4ºC, whereas this parameter was greater at all frequencies except 10 min⁻¹ in cod at 16ºC. Unfortunately, these experiments did not highlight clear species differences in the relative contributions of the L-type Ca²⁺ channels, sarcoplasmic reticulum and Na+/Ca²⁺ exchange to the Ca²⁺ transient.

Submarine slope stability has become an important concern and a subject of research with increasing demand for offshore developments and technological advancement for harsh and challenging environments. The consequences of submarine slope failure adjacent to oil and gas facilities would have a large financial, safety and regulatory impact. This current research work investigates potential failure of submarine gassy slopes triggered by tidal variations. Due to tidal variations, failure of an unsaturated slope may occur under specific combinations of increasing degree of saturation and soil permeability, and decreasing tidal period. Novel physical model tests in a geotechnical centrifuge were undertaken to examine submarine slope failure mechanisms containing gassy sediments. The model preparation techniques, measurement systems and results are presented. The response observed in the model test is discussed and further developments proposed. The buried PPT’s response of the submarine slope are comparable in terms of attenuation and phase lag with Nagaswaran (1983) and with field measurements of Atigh and Byrne (2004) in terms of phase lag.
