A search for new charged massive gauge bosons, called W, is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 8 TeV, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1. This analysis searches for W bosons in the Wtb decay channel in final states with electrons or muons, using a multivariate method based on boosted decision trees. The search covers masses between 0.5 and 3.0 TeV, for right-handed or left-handed W bosons. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed and limits are set on the Wtb cross-section times branching ratio and on the W-boson effective couplings as a function of the W-boson mass using the CLs procedure. For a left-handed (right-handed) W boson, masses below 1.70 (1.92) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

A search for a massive W gauge boson is performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 8 TeV, corresponding to 20.3 fb1 of integrated luminosity. This analysis is done in the Wtbqqbb mode for W masses above 1.5 TeV, where the W decay products are highly boosted. Novel jet substructure techniques are used to identify jets from high-momentum top quarks to ensure high sensitivity, independent of W mass, up to 3 TeV; b-tagging is also used to identify jets originating from b-quarks. The data are consistent with Standard Model background-only expectations, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the Wtb cross section times branching ratio ranging from 0.16 pb to 0.33 pb for left-handed W bosons, and ranging from 0.10 pb to 0.21 pb for W bosons with purely right-handed couplings. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the W-boson coupling to tb as a function of the W mass using an effective field theory approach, which is independent of details of particular models predicting a W boson.

The use of stem cells is a promising therapeutic approach for the substantial challenge to regenerate cartilage. Considering the two prerequisites, namely the use of a 3D system to enable the chondrogenic differentiation and growth factors to avoid dedifferentiation, the diffusion efficiency of essential biomolecules is an intrinsic issue. We already proposed a liquified bioencapsulation system containing solid microparticles as cell adhesion sites1. Here, we intend to use the optimized system towards chondrogenic differentiation by encapsulating stem cells and collagenII-TGF-3 PLLA microparticles. As a proof-of-concept, magnetite-nanoparticles were incorporated into the multilayered membrane. This can be a great advantage after implantation procedures to fixate the capsules in situ with the held of an external magnetic patch and for the follow-up through imaging. Results showed that the production of glycosaminoglycans and the expression of cartilage-relevant markers (collagen II, Sox9, aggrecan, and COMP) increased up to 28 days, while hypertrophic (collagen X) and fibrotic (collagen I) markers were downregulated. The presence of nanofibers in the newly deposited ECM was visualized by SEM, which resembles the collagen fibrils of native cartilage. The presence of the major constituent of cartilage, collagen II, was detected by immunocytochemistry and afranin-O and alcian blue stainings revealed a basophilic ECM deposition, which is characteristic of neocartilage. These findings suggest that the proposed system may provide a suitable environment for chondrogenic differentiation.

(Excerto) A terceira edio do Congresso sobre Literacia, Media e Cidadania (LMC) teve lugar nos dias 17 e 18 de abril de 2015, em Lisboa, no Pavilho do Conhecimento. Organizado pelo GILM Grupo Informal sobre Literacia para os Media, o evento, que contou com a participao de cerca de 250 profissionais, teve como eixo central a temtica Literacia Meditica e Leituras Crticas do Mundo. Durante dois dias de trabalho, procurou-se pro-mover uma reflexo crtica sobre a atualidade e o mundo, e o modo como os media a representam, com o objetivo de aprender a olhar e a ler criticamente os ecrs e as mensagens e textos que produzem, o modo como os cidados os usam, como se apropriam deles e como produzem e partilham informao. Estes e outros tpicos relacionados foram apresentados e debatidos em 4 sesses plenrias, 16 sesses de comunicaes livres e 4 workshops, acompanhados de uma mostra de projetos, produtos e servios patentes no trio do Pavilho.

Conformally flat spacetimes with an elastic stress energy tensor having diagonal trace-free anisotropic pressure are investigated using 1+3 formalism. The 1+3 Bianchi and Jacobi identities and Einstein field equations are written for a particular case with a conformal factor dependent on only one spatial coordinate. Solutions with non null anisotropic pressure are obtained.

The ferroelectric phase transitions in 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCZT 50/50) ceramics,fabricatedbyasolidstatereaction,werestudiedbyusing X-Ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and measuring electric polarization, dielectric permittivity and pyroelectric current. Xraydiffraction(XRD)confirmsthecoexistenceoftetragonal(T) andrhombohedral(R)phasesatroomtemperature.Thetemperature dependence of the Raman modes frequency reveals the existenceoftwophasetransitionscorrespondingtotherhombohedral tetragonal, and tetragonal - cubic close to 30 and 100 C, respectively. The temperature dependence of electric polarization,pyroelectriccurrent,anddielectricpermittivityfurther supports theferroelectric (tetragonal) toparaelectric (cubic) phasetransition.Moreover,thedielectricpermittivityrevealsthe diffuseness of the phase transition and is attributed to the compositional fluctuations of different polar micro-regions.

A educao para a sexualidade nas escolas torna-se cada vez mais importante, pois os adolescentes constituem uma faixa etria muito vulnervel a comportamentos sexuais de risco, que podem vir a comprometer o seu projeto de vida futuro. O projeto de interveno aqui apresentado tinha como principal objetivo contribuir para um aumento dos conhecimentos dos alunos, ao nvel da educao para a sexualidade e, consequentemente, promover uma mudana de crenas, atitudes e comportamentos por parte dos mesmos, junto dos seus pares e familiares. Neste sentido, foi adotada a metodologia de investigao-ao (IA). Na fase de diagnstico, o instrumento de recolha de dados predominantemente utilizado foi um questionrio construdo especificamente para o efeito, o qual foi aplicado a uma amostra de 114 alunos (38 raparigas; 76 rapazes) de 3. CEB. O mesmo instrumento foi aplicado no final da interveno - fase de avaliao. Nas respostas aos questionrios iniciais, os alunos evidenciaram algum desconhecimento relativamente ao conceito de sexualidade, s causas e consequncias da gravidez na adolescncia e revelaram tambm a adoo de alguns comportamentos de risco. Para alm do questionrio, foi tambm aplicada aos alunos a tcnica da caixa de perguntas. Perante as necessidades evidenciadas pelos alunos foi implementada uma formao, dedicando-se uma sesso de 45 minutos para cada tema: o que a sexualidade; gravidez na adolescncia; assdio sexual e violncia na intimidade juvenil. Os resultados obtidos na fase de avaliao demonstraram que os alunos tinham adquirido um conceito de sexualidade mais correto, revelaram-se mais conscientes relativamente s causas e consequncias da gravidez na adolescncia, demonstraram estar mais informados sobre o assdio sexual, bem como sobre os cuidados a ter e revelaram algumas mudanas de crenas e opinies relativamente a determinadas situaes potencialmente abusivas nas relaes de intimidade juvenil.

Pedro Andrade destaca o papel que as literacias hbridas preenchem numa redefinio ps-colonial da Europa. Em sua opinio, as literacias hbridas constituem uma condio necessria para a desconstruo do discurso colonial e a posterior reconstruo de literacias e literaturas ps-coloniais. Como parte deste processo, o autor argumenta a necessidade de vrios tipos de competncias que enfatizem a leitura e escrita no apenas dentro de sua prpria cultura, mas tambm nas culturas dos outros. A literacia digital desempenha um papel particularmente importante neste processo, o que nos permite enfatizar as multivocalidades desta alteridade, igualmente na interao entre diferentes tradies de literacia: Ocidental e Oriental, nacional e transnacional, verbal e meditica. Andrade exemplifica o conceito de literatura transmeditica com uma srie de projetos em que esteve envolvido, por exemplo a Web 3.0 Novel enquanto modalidade daquilo que ele nomeia "GeoNeoLogic Novel". Este gnero de novel experimental mistura a narrativa com a teoria e a recolha de dados no campo emprico, promovendo uma abordagem que se apresenta simultaneamente regional e global. Em suma, o autor sugere diversos conceitos em primeira mo que classifica de origem Lusfona, e que representam diversas estratgias ps-coloniais globais tambm visveis na rea social, poltica e cultural da Lusofonia: o pensamento-rplica (thinking back); o 'conhecimento transmeditico' (transmediatic knowledge); a sociedade da escrita comum (common writing society); as redes comuns de conflito/significado (common webs of conflict and meaning); a literatura co-ordinria (co-ordinary literature).

Supramolecular hydrogels rely on small molecules that self-assemble in water as a result of the cooperative effect of several relatively weak intermolecular interactions. Peptide-based low molecular weight hydrogelators have attracted enormous interest owing to the simplicity of small molecules combined with the versatility and biocompatibility of peptides. In this work, naproxen, a well known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was N-conjugated with various dehydrodipeptides to give aromatic peptide amphiphiles that resist proteolysis. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to obtain insight into the underlying molecular mechanism of self-assembly and to rationalize the design of this type of hydrogelators. The results obtained were in excellent agreement with the experimental observations. Only dehydrodipeptides having at least one aromatic amino acid gave hydrogels. The characterization of the hydrogels was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence spectroscopy and also rheological assays.

The synthesis and biological evaluation of novel 1-aryl-3-[2-, 3- or 4-(thieno[3,2-b]pyridin-7-ylthio)phenyl]ureas 3, 4 and 5 as VEGFR-2 tyrosine kinase inhibitors, are reported. The 1-aryl-3-[3-(thieno[3,2-b]pyridin-7-ylthio)phenyl]ureas 4a-4h, with the arylurea in the meta position to the thioether, showed the lowest IC50 values in enzymatic assays (10-206 nM), the most potent compounds 4d-4h (IC50 10-28 nM) bearing hydrophobic groups (Me, F, CF3 and Cl) in the terminal phenyl ring. A convincing rationalization was achieved for the highest potent compounds 4 as type II VEGFR-2 inhibitors, based on the simultaneous presence of: (1) the thioether linker and (2) the arylurea moiety in the meta position. For compounds 4, significant inhibition of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) proliferation (BrdU assay), migration (wound-healing assay) and tube formation were observed at low concentrations. These compounds have also shown to increase apoptosis using the TUNEL assay. Immunostaining for total and phosphorylated (active) VEGFR-2 was performed by Western blotting. The phosphorylation of the receptor was significantly inhibited at 1.0 and 2.5 microM for the most promising compounds. Altogether, these findings point to an antiangiogenic effect in HUVECs.
