Magnetoelectric microspheres based on piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and magnetrostrictive CoFe2O4 (CFO), a novel morphology for polymer-based ME material, have been developed by an electrospray process. The CFO nanoparticles content in the (3-7 μm diameter) microspheres reaches values up to 27 wt.%, despite their concentration in the starting solution reaching values up to 70 wt.%. Additionally, the inclusion of magnetostrictive nanoparticles into the polymer spheres has no relevant effect on the piezoelectric β-phase content (≈60%), crystallinity (40%) and the onset degradation temperature (460º-465ºC) of the polymer matrix. The multiferroic microspeheres show a maximum piezoelectric reponse |d33|≈30 pC.N-1, leading to a magnetoelectric response of Δ|d33|≈5 pC.N-1 obtained when a 220 mT DC magnetic field was applied. It is also shown that the interface between CFO nanoparticles and PVDF (from 0 to 55%) has a strong influence on the ME response of the microspheres. The simplicity and the scalability of the processing method suggest a large application potential of this novel magnetoelectric geometry in areas such as tissue engineering, sensors and actuators.

The mass of the top quark is measured in a data set corresponding to 4.6 fb−1 of proton--proton collisions with centre-of-mass energy s√=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events consistent with hadronic decays of top--antitop quark pairs with at least six jets in the final state are selected. The substantial background from multijet production is modelled with data-driven methods that utilise the number of identified b-quark jets and the transverse momentum of the sixth leading jet, which have minimal correlation. The top-quark mass is obtained from template fits to the ratio of three-jet to dijet mass. The three-jet mass is calculated from the three jets of a top-quark decay. Using these three jets the dijet mass is obtained from the two jets of the W boson decay. The top-quark mass obtained from this fit is thus less sensitive to the uncertainty in the energy measurement of the jets. A binned likelihood fit yields a top-quark mass of mt = 175.1 ± 1.4 (stat.) ± 1.2 (syst.) GeV.

Este projeto propõe um aprofundamento cientifico sobre a temática da infância buscando uma discussão que entrelaça as noções de cultura lúdica e mídias no campo da Educação Física. A ênfase recai em analisar o processo de produção das brincadeiras das crianças a partir de uma perspectiva que se desenvolve em interface com a cultura midiática, em que objetivo principal é conhecer as representações e as práticas motoras das crianças que acontecem na escola a partir das interações estabelecidas com as personagens da mídia. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, a desenvolver-se com uma turma de crianças, entre 4 e 5 anos, da Educação Infantil, no Brasil. A pesquisa possui um delineamento de cunho etnográfica em razão das circunstancias que os objetivos exigem. A proposta metodológica, com caráter de intervenção e observação participante, terá como principais recursos oficinas desenvolvidas com as crianças, entrevistas e registros por meio de diário de campo. Pretende-se com esta investigação, contribuir com as pesquisas no campo das ciências humanas e sociais, no sentido de compreender as transformações que ocorrem nas experiências lúdicas infantis, sobretudo as identidades motoras, que as crianças constroem em meio às referencias simbólicas que circulam na cultura midiática.

A high-resolution mtDNA phylogenetic tree allowed us to look backward in time to investigate purifying selection. Purifying selection was very strong in the last 2,500 years, continuously eliminating pathogenic mutations back until the end of the Younger Dryas (∼11,000 years ago), when a large population expansion likely relaxed selection pressure. This was preceded by a phase of stable selection until another relaxation occurred in the out-of-Africa migration. Demography and selection are closely related: expansions led to relaxation of selection and higher pathogenicity mutations significantly decreased the growth of descendants. The only detectible positive selection was the recurrence of highly pathogenic nonsynonymous mutations (m.3394T>C-m.3397A>G-m.3398T>C) at interior branches of the tree, preventing the formation of a dinucleotide STR (TATATA) in the MT-ND1 gene. At the most recent time scale in 124 mother-children transmissions, purifying selection was detectable through the loss of mtDNA variants with high predicted pathogenicity. A few haplogroup-defining sites were also heteroplasmic, agreeing with a significant propensity in 349 positions in the phylogenetic tree to revert back to the ancestral variant. This nonrandom mutation property explains the observation of heteroplasmic mutations at some haplogroup-defining sites in sequencing datasets, which may not indicate poor quality as has been claimed.
