Automatic generation of ETL physical systems from BPMN conceptual models

ETL conceptual modeling is a very important activity in any data warehousing system project implementation. Owning a high-level system representation allowing for a clear identification of the main parts of a data warehousing system is clearly a great advantage, especially in early stages of design and development. However, the effort to model conceptually an ETL system rarely is properly rewarded. Translating ETL conceptual models directly into something that saves work and time on the concrete implementation of the system process it would be, in fact, a great help. In this paper we present and discuss a hybrid approach to this problem, combining the simplicity of interpretation and power of expression of BPMN on ETL systems conceptualization with the use of ETL patterns to produce automatically an ETL skeleton, a first prototype system, which has the ability to be executed in a commercial ETL tool like Kettle.

Comunicação, culturas e estratégias. IV Jornadas doutorais comunicação e Estudos Culturais

(Excerto) A comunicação inscreve-se sempre em contextos culturais. Numa época dominada pelo regime da performatividade, da eficiência e da utilidade (Martins, 2015), a comunicação é cada vez mais pensada e usada de forma estratégica (Pinto-Coelho, 2005; Ruão & Kunsch, 2014). O mesmo se passa com aquilo a que chamamos cultura. Como nos diz George Yúdice (2006), a cultura, estando cada vez mais ligada à ideia de recurso ou de expediente, constitui-se como uma preocupação crescente de todos os setores da sociedade, quer para resolver problemas sociopolíticos, quer como instrumento que impulsiona o crescimento económico e a geração de emprego. Para professores e investigadores, estas novas orientações exigem problematizações outras, o abandono de instrumentos do passado e o favorecimento de uma reflexão e educação críticas. O presente livro, que reúne um conjunto de textos escritos por investigadores das áreas da Comunicação e dos Estudos Culturais que participaram nas IV Jornadas Doutorais em Comunicação e Cultura realizadas na Universidade do Minho, reflete este “ar dos tempos”. A edição inscreve-se num esforço permanente, desenvolvido pelo CECS — Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Sociedade da Universidade do Minho — de promover a partilha de conhecimentos e experiências de pesquisa entre estudantes de doutoramento e pós-doutoramento das áreas das Ciências da Comunicação e dos Estudos Culturais. O encontro deste ano originou uma discussão frutífera à volta dos temas da comunicação, das culturas e dos seus usos estratégicos. O resultado é uma leitura, muito própria, de diferentes fenómenos da atualidade.

ATLAS Run 1 searches for direct pair production of third-generation squarks at the Large Hadron Collider

This paper reviews and extends searches for the direct pair production of the scalar supersymmetric partners of the top and bottom quarks in proton--proton collisions collected by the ATLAS collaboration during the LHC Run 1. Most of the analyses use 20 fb−1 of collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV, although in some case an additional 4.7 fb−1 of collision data at s√=7 TeV are used. New analyses are introduced to improve the sensitivity to specific regions of the model parameter space. Since no evidence of third-generation squarks is found, exclusion limits are derived by combining several analyses and are presented in both a simplified model framework, assuming simple decay chains, as well as within the context of more elaborate phenomenological supersymmetric models.

A novel hanging spherical drop system for the generation of cellular spheroids and high throughput combinatorial drug screening

We propose a novel hanging spherical drop system for anchoring arrays of droplets of cell suspension based on the use of biomimetic superhydrophobic flat substrates, with controlled positional adhesion and minimum contact with a solid substrate. By facing down the platform, it was possible to generate independent spheroid bodies in a high throughput manner, in order to mimic in vivo tumour models on the lab-on-chip scale. To validate this system for drug screening purposes, the toxicity of the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin in cell spheroids was tested and compared to cells in 2D culture. The advantages presented by this platform, such as feasibility of the system and the ability to control the size uniformity of the spheroid, emphasize its potential to be used as a new low cost toolbox for high-throughput drug screening and in cell or tissue engineering.
