tThis work is devoted to the investigation of zirconium oxynitride (ZrOxNy) films with varied opticalresponses prompted by the variations in their compositional and structural properties. The films wereprepared by dc reactive magnetron sputtering of Zr, using Ar and a reactive gas mixture of N2+ O2(17:3).The colour of the films changed from metallic-like, very bright yellow-pale and golden yellow, for low gasflows to red-brownish for intermediate gas flows. Associated to this colour change there was a significantdecrease of brightness. With further increase of the reactive gas flow, the colour of the samples changedfrom red-brownish to dark blue or even to interference colourations. The variations in composition dis-closed the existence of four different zones, which were found to be closely related with the variationsin the crystalline structure. XRD analysis revealed the change from a B1 NaCl face-centred cubic zirco-nium nitride-type phase for films prepared with low reactive gas flows, towards a poorly crystallizedover-stoichiometric nitride phase, which may be similar to that of Zr3N4with some probable oxygeninclusions within nitrogen positions, for films prepared with intermediate reactive gas flows. For highreactive gas flows, the films developed an oxynitride-type phase, similar to that of -Zr2ON2with someoxygen atoms occupying some of the nitrogen positions, evolving to a ZrO2monoclinic type structurewithin the zone where films were prepared with relatively high reactive gas flows. The analysis carriedout by reflected electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS) revealed a continuous depopulation of thed-band and an opening of an energy gap between the valence band (2p) and the Fermi level close to 5 eV.The ZrN-based coatings (zone I and II) presented intrinsic colourations, with a decrease in brightness anda colour change from bright yellow to golden yellow, red brownish and dark blue. Associated to thesechanges, there was also a shift of the reflectivity minimum to lower energies, with the increase of thenon-metallic content. The samples lying in the two last zones (zone III, oxynitride and zone IV, oxide films)revealed a typical semi-transparent-optical behaviour showing interference-like colourations only dueto the complete depopulation of the d band at the Fermi level. The samples lying in these zones presentedalso an increase of the optical bandgap from 2 to 3.6 eV.

Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) coupled with Fourier transform rheology (FTR) was used for the first time to characterize the large deformation behavior of selected bituminous binders at 20 C. Two polymer modified bitumens (PMB) containing recycled EVA and HDPE and two unmodified bitumens were tested with LAOS-FTR. The LAOS-FTR response of all binders was compared at same frequency, at same Deborah number (by tuning the frequency to the relaxation time of each binder) and at same phase shift angle d (by tuning the frequency to the one corresponding to d = 50 in the SAOS response of each sample). In all the approaches, LAOS-FTR results allowed to differentiate between all the nonlinear mechanical characteristics of the tested binders. All binders show LAOS-FTR patterns reminiscent from colloidal dispersions and emulsions. EVA PMB was less prone to strain-induced microstructural changes when compared to HDPE PMB which showed larger values of nonlinear FTR parameters for the range of shear strains tested in LAOS.

There are two very different interpretations of the prehistory of Island Southeast Asia (ISEA), with genetic evidence invoked in support of both. The "out-of-Taiwan" model proposes a major Late Holocene expansion of Neolithic Austronesian speakers from Taiwan. An alternative, proposing that Late Glacial/postglacial sea-level rises triggered largely autochthonous dispersals, accounts for some otherwise enigmatic genetic patterns, but fails to explain the Austronesian language dispersal. Combining mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), Y-chromosome and genome-wide data, we performed the most comprehensive analysis of the region to date, obtaining highly consistent results across all three systems and allowing us to reconcile the models. We infer a primarily common ancestry for Taiwan/ISEA populations established before the Neolithic, but also detected clear signals of two minor Late Holocene migrations, probably representing Neolithic input from both Mainland Southeast Asia and South China, via Taiwan. This latter may therefore have mediated the Austronesian language dispersal, implying small-scale migration and language shift rather than large-scale expansion.

Background: Neonates show visual preference for their mother's face/voice and shift their attention from their mother to a stranger's face/voice after habituation. Aim: To assess neonate's mother versus stranger's face/voice visual preference, namely mother's anxiety and depression during the third pregnancy trimester and neonate's: 1) visual preference for the mother versus the stranger's face/voice (pretest visual preference), 2) habituation to the mother's face/voice and 3) visual preference for the stranger versus the mother's face/voice (posttest visual preference). Method: Mothers (N=100) filled out the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI) both at the third pregnancy trimester and childbirth, and the “preference and habituation to the mother's face/voice versus stranger” paradigm was administered to their newborn 1 to 5 days after childbirth. Results: Neonates of anxious/depressed mothers during the third pregnancy trimester contrarily to neonates of non-anxious/non-depressed mothers did not look 1) longer at their mother's than at the stranger's face/voice at the pretest visual preference (showing no visual preference for the mother), nor 2) longer at the stranger's face/voice in the posttest than in the pretest visual preference (not improving their attention to the stranger's after habituation). Conclusion: Infants exposed to mother's anxiety/depression at the third gestational trimester exhibit less perceptual/social competencies at birth.

The last four decades have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women entering employment. This is particularly true in Europe and although more European women are working outside the home, the patterns of female employment have changed very little. An analysis of these patterns is presented. It was found that women continue to dominate specific fields, particularly teaching and service providing. An investigation of the interpersonal behavior differences among 117 American women from the southeastern United States in three work roles--homemakers, women in traditional occupations, and in nontraditional occupations--was conducted and the sex-role orientation, attitudes toward success, and demographic indicators were examined in order to consider the interplay of these variables with female occupational role and interpersonal behavior. A second focus of the study is on the cross-cultural comparison of the psychological and work variables in women of two different cultures: America and Portugal. Thirty-one Portuguese women were a preliminary comparison sample. The American results showed significant differences between groups in self-perceived interpersonal behaviors and the findings contradicted current stereotypes. The cross-cultural data, although preliminary, indicates differences between the countries in social desirability, aggressive and assertive behaviors, and in sex-role attitudes, which seem to reflect the different stages of economic development. This chapter identifies and analyzes some characteristics of working situations that are important in the construction of professional identities. It is claimed that professional identity presumes a dynamic process and is constructed and reconstructed in social situations and interactions. Work has a central place in the life of individuals and societies. The contexts of work are places par excellence for investment, expression, negotiation and recognition of the actor themselves and of others. They are, thus, situations for the attribution offeelings about work, ofrelational transactions, oflearning and production of professional know ledge, which are fundamental elements in the (re )construction of professional identity and which are emphasized here below.
