[Excerpt] Waste cooking oils (WCO) generated from vegetable oils used at high temperatures in food frying, cause environmental problems and must be reutilized. New strategies to valorize these wastes are attracting a great scientific interest due to the important advantages offered from an economic and environmental point of view. A microbial platform can be established to convert low-value hydrophobic substrates, such as waste cooking oils, to microbial lipids (single cell oil, SCO) and other value-added bioproducts, such as lipase. [Exert] Since the discovery that polyacetylene could be doped to the metallic state more than 3 decades ago, an ever-growing body of a multidisciplinary approach to material design, synthesis, and system integration has been evidenced. The present chapter will primarily review the emerging field of intrinsically conducting polymer and conductive polymer blends, with polyaniline and polypyrrole as the major representatives of conducting polymers. This survey will also address some of the potential areas for applications of such conductive polymer blends. Also, current results concerning the chemical polymerization of conducting polymers on bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) will be presented, including brief remarks on the rationale for the use of conductive BNC blends. This paper presents a model predictive current control applied to a proposed single-phase five-level active rectifier (FLAR). This current control strategy uses the discrete-time nature of the active rectifier to define its state in each sampling interval. Although the switching frequency is not constant, this current control strategy allows to follow the reference with low total harmonic distortion (THDF). The implementation of the active rectifier that was used to obtain the experimental results is described in detail along the paper, presenting the circuit topology, the principle of operation, the power theory, and the current control strategy. The experimental results confirm the robustness and good performance (with low current THDF and controlled output voltage) of the proposed single-phase FLAR operating with model predictive current control.

This work presents a molecular-scale agent-based model for the simulation of enzymatic reactions at experimentally measured concentrations. The model incorporates stochasticity and spatial dependence, using diffusing and reacting particles with physical dimensions. We developed strategies to adjust and validate the enzymatic rates and diffusion coefficients to the information required by the computational agents, i.e., collision efficiency, interaction logic between agents, the time scale associated with interactions (e.g., kinetics), and agent velocity. Also, we tested the impact of molecular location (a source of biological noise) in the speed at which the reactions take place. Simulations were conducted for experimental data on the 2-hydroxymuconate tautomerase (EC 5.3.2.6, UniProt ID Q01468) and the Steroid Delta-isomerase (EC 5.3.3.1, UniProt ID P07445). Obtained results demonstrate that our approach is in accordance to existing experimental data and long-term biophysical and biochemical assumptions.
