Wear of dies is a serious problem in the forging industry. The materials used for the dies are generally expensive steel alloys and the dies require costly heat treatment and surface finishing operations. Degeneration of the die profile implies rejection of forged components and necessitates resinking or replacement of the die. Measures which reduce wear of the die can therefore aid in the reduction of production costs. The work reported here is the first phase of a study of the causes of die wear in forging production where the batch size is small and the machine employed is a light hammer. This is a problem characteristic of the medium and small scale area of the forging industry where the cost of dies is a significant proportion of the total capital investment. For the same energy input and under unlubricated conditions, die wear has been found to be sensitive to forging temperature; in cold forging the yield strength of the die material is the prime factor governing the degeneration of the die profile, whilst in hot forging the wear resistance of the die material is the main factor which determines the rate of die wear. At an intermediate temperature, such as that characteristic of warm forging, the die wear is found to be less than that in both cold and hot forging. This preliminary study therefore points to the fact that the forging temperature must be taken into account in the selection of die material. Further, the forging industry must take serious note of the warm forging process, as it not only provides good surface finish, as claimed by many authors, but also has an inherent tendency to minimize die wear.

The performance of surface aeration systems, among other key design variables, depends upon the geometric parameters of the aeration tank. Efficient performance and scale up or scale down of the experimental results of an aeration ystem requires optimal geometric conditions. Optimal conditions refer to the conditions of maximum oxygen transfer rate, which assists in scaling up or down the system for ommercial utilization. The present work investigates the effect of an aeration tank's shape (unbaffled circular, baffled circular and unbaffled square) on oxygen transfer. Present results demonstrate that there is no effect of shape on the optimal geometric conditions for rotor position and rotor dimensions. This experimentation shows that circular tanks (baffled or unbaffled) do not have optimal geometric conditions for liquid transfer, whereas the square cross-section tank shows a unique geometric shape to optimize oxygen transfer.

In this work, the mechanics of tubular hydroforming under various types of loading conditions is investigated. The main objective is to contrast the effects of prescribing fluid pressure or volume flow rate, in conjunction with axial displacement, on the stress and strain histories experienced by the tube and the process of bulging. To this end, axisymmetric finite element simulations of free hydroforming (without external die contact) of aluminium alloy tubes are carried out. Hill’s normally anisotropic yield theory along with material properties determined in a previous experimental study [A. Kulkarni, P. Biswas, R. Narasimhan, A. Luo, T. Stoughton, R. Mishra, A.K. Sachdev, An experimental and numerical study of necking initiation in aluminium alloy tubes during hydroforming, Int. J. Mech. Sci. 46 (2004) 1727–1746] are employed in the computations. It is found that while prescribed fluid pressure leads to highly non-proportional strain paths, specified fluid volume flow rate may result in almost proportional ones for the predominant portion of loading. The peak pressure increases with axial compression for the former, while the reverse trend applies under the latter. The implication of these results on failure by localized necking of the tube wall is addressed in a subsequent investigation.

The use of an instrumented impact test set-up to evaluate the influence of water ingress on the impact response of a carbon–epoxy (C–E) laminated composite system containing discontinuous buffer strips (BS) has been examined. The data on the BS-free C–E sample in dry conditions are used as reference to compare with the data derived from those immersed in water. The work demonstrated the utility of an instrumented impact test set-up in characterising the response, first owing to the architectural difference due to introduction of buffer strips and then due to the presence of an additional phase in the form of water ingressed into the sample. The presence of water was found to enhance the energy absorption characteristics of the C–E system with BS insertions. It was also noticed that with an increasing number of BS layer insertions, the load–time plots displayed characteristic changes. The ductility indices (DI) were found to display a lower value for the water immersed samples compared to the dry ones.

Diversely substituted hydantoins have been synthesized by new strategy from cyanamide based precursor, that is, methyl N-cyano-N-alkyl/arylaminoacetate. Dialkylphosphates were employed as the mild reagent to hydrolyze and cyclize the substrate in one step to give quantitative yields of the desired products. Syntheses of multivalent hydantoins viz bis-hydantoin, bicyclohydantoin have potentially widened the scope and applicability of the present method. Solvent-free conditions and very easy work-up procedure make the reaction convenient and eco-friendly. Single crystal structures of some of the representative compounds are also reported. With the increasing use of extra high-voltage transmission in power system expansion, the manufacturers of power apparatus and the electric utilities are studying the nature of overvoltages in power systems due to lightning and, in particular, switching operations. For such analyses, knowledge of the natural frequencies of the windings of transformers under a wide variety of conditions is important. The work reported by the author in a previous paper is extended and equivalent circuits have been developed to represent several sets of terminal conditions. These equivalent circuits can be used to determine the natural frequencies and transient voltages in the windings. Comparison of the measured and the computed results obtained with a model transformer indicates that they are in good agreement. Hence, this method of analysis provides a satisfactory procedure for the estimation of natural frequencies and transient voltages in transformer windings.

The mathematical model for diffuse fluorescence spectroscopy/imaging is represented by coupled partial differential equations (PDEs), which describe the excitation and emission light propagation in soft biological tissues. The generic closed-form solutions for these coupled PDEs are derived in this work for the case of regular geometries using the Green's function approach using both zero and extrapolated boundary conditions. The specific solutions along with the typical data types, such as integrated intensity and the mean time of flight, for various regular geometries were also derived for both time-and frequency-domain cases. The present work describes the tensile flow and work hardening behavior of a high strength 7010 aluminum alloy by constitutive relations. The alloy has been hot rolled by three different cross-rolling schedules. Room temperature tensile properties have been evaluated as a function of tensile axis orientation in the as-hot rolled as well as peak aged conditions. It is found that both the Ludwigson and a generalized Voce-Bergstrom relation adequately describe the tensile flow behavior of the present alloy in all conditions compared to the Hollomon relation. The variation in the Ludwigson fitting parameter could be correlated well with the microstructural features and anisotropic contribution of strengthening precipitates in the as-rolled and peak aged conditions, respectively. The hardening rate and the saturation stress of the first Voce-Bergstrom parameter, on the other hand, depend mainly on the crystallographic texture of the specimens. It is further shown that for the peak aged specimens the uniform elongation (epsilon(u)) derived from the Ludwigson relation matches well with the measured epsilon(u) irrespective of processing and loading directions. However, the Ludwigson fit overestimates the epsilon(u) in case of the as-rolled specimens. The Hollomon fit, on the other hand, predicts well the measured epsilon(u), of the as-rolled specimens but severely underestimates the epsilon(u), for the peak aged specimens. Contrarily, both the relations significantly overestimate the UTS of the as-rolled and the peak aged specimens. The Voce-Bergstrom parameters define the slope of e Theta-sigma plots in the stage-III regime when the specimens show a classical linear decrease in hardening rate in stage-III. Further analysis of work hardening behavior throws some light on the effect of texture on the dislocation storage and dynamic recovery.

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations require imposition of non-periodic boundary conditions (NPBCs) that seamlessly account for the effect of the truncated bulk region on the simulated MD region. Standard implementation of specular boundary conditions in such simulations results in spurious density and force fluctuations near the domain boundary and is therefore inappropriate for coupled atomistic-continuum calculations. In this work, we present a novel NPBC model that relies on boundary atoms attached to a simple cubic lattice with soft springs to account for interactions from particles which would have been present in an untruncated full domain treatment. We show that the proposed model suppresses the unphysical fluctuations in the density to less than 1% of the mean while simultaneously eliminating spurious oscillations in both mean and boundary forces. The model allows for an effective coupling of atomistic and continuum solvers as demonstrated through multiscale simulation of boundary driven singular flow in a cavity. The geometric flexibility of the model enables straightforward extension to nonplanar complex domains without any adverse effects on dynamic properties such as the diffusion coefficient. Corona discharges resulting from the metal parts of insulators and the line hardware affect the long term performance of the polymeric insulators used for outdoor application and can lead to its eventual failure. The authors previous work, involved in developing a new methodology to evaluate the performance of polymeric shed materials subjected to corona stresses in the presence of natural fog condition, results revealed more surface hydroxylation thereby resulting in more loss of hydropobhicity. With the increase in industrialization, there is an increase in acidic component of the rain as well as the fog (moisture). The present work, reports the effect of acid fog on the corona performance of the polymeric insulators for both AC and DC excitation, interesting results are obtained. A comparison of the experimental investigations revealed that the acidic fog has more effect than that of the normal fog. This fact has been confirmed by physico-chemical analysis like the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurement. The effect of DC corona is found to be lesser in comparison with the AC; however the hydroxylation induced by the DC corona under the presence of fog is similar with that of AC excitation.
