The valence state of Yb in some of its intermetallics, YbNi2Ge2, YbCu2Si2 and YbPd2Si2 has been investigated by LIII(Yb) absorption edges and X-ray pnotoelectron spectra in the 4f and 4d regions. These studies establish the presence of mixed valence in all three systems and illustrate the utility of 4f and 4d spectra in the study of mixed valence in Yb compounds.

XPS and LIII X-ray absorption edge studies regarding the valence state of cerium have been carried out on the intermetallic compounds CeCo2, which becomes superconducting at low temperatures. It is observed from XPS that the surface shows both Ce3+ and Ce4+ valence states, while the X-ray absorption edge studies reveal only Ce4+ in the bulk. Thus valence fluctuation and superconductivity do not coexist in the bulk of this compound.

Surface composition and depth profile studies of hemiplated thin film CdS:CuzS solar cells have been carried out using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) techniques. These studies indicate that the junction is fairly diffused in the as-prepared cell. However, heat treatment of the cell at 210°C in air relatively sharpens the junction and improves the cell performance. Using the Cu(2p3p)/S(2p) ratio as well as the Cu(LVV)/(LMM) Auger intensity ratio, it can be inferred that the nominal valency of copper in the layers above the junction is Cut and it is essentially in the CUSS form. Copper signals are observed from layers deep down in the cell. These seem to appear mostly from the grain boundary region. From the observed concentration of Cd, Cu and S in these deeper layers and the Cu(LVV)/(LMM) ratio it appears that the signals from copper essentially originate partly from copper in CuS and partly from Cu2t trapped in the lattice. It is significant to note that the nominal valence state of copper changes rather abruptly from Cut to Cuz+ across the junction.

The three isomeric cresols were subjected to the all-valence-electron CNDO/2 andPPP-CI calculations. Results from this study were used: (i) to compare the electronic structures of these isomers vis-Ã-vis parent compounds-phenol and toluene, (ii) to obtain a quantitative picture of their chemical reactivities and electronic absorption spectra. Using the sgr-core charges derived from CNDO/2 calculations and subsequently revising the valence-state ionisation potential and one-center-two-electron repulsion integrals, thePPP-CI calculations were performed on the title compounds according toNishimoto andForster scheme. In these calculations the pseudo-unsaturated nature of the methyl group has been given due consideration. In spectral assignment, compared to the conventionalPPP approach, the CNDO/2-basedPPP-CI method gave a better agreement with the experimental data.

A structural investigation of cubic oxides (space group I23) of the formula Bi(26-x)M(x)O(40-delta) (M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Pb) related to the Y-Bi2O3 phase has been carried out by the Rietveld profile analysis of high-resolution X-ray powder diffraction data in order to establish the cation distributions. Compositional dependence of the cation distribution has been examined in the case of Bi26-xCoxO40-delta (1 < x < 16). The study reveals that in Bi(26-X)M(X)O(40-delta) with M = Ti, Mn, Fe, Co or Pb, the M cations tend to occupy tetrahedral (2a) sites when x < 2 while the octahedral (24f) sites are shared by the excess Co or Ni cations with Bi atoms when x > 2. Also experimental magnetic moments of Mn, Co and Ni derivatives have been used to establish the valence state and distribution of these cations.

Two distinct ferromagnetic phases are present in LaMn0.5Co0.5O3 for which the spin-only magnetic moment calculated from the high temperature dc susceptibility is found to be unusually high. Such a high moment can only be accounted for by assigning the valence state of the cations to Mn2+-Co4+. This is unrealistic as the earlier report based on X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has suggested the valence state to be mainly Mn4+-Co2+ with traces of Co3+. Also from our studies using XAS, it is found that the valence state is mainly Mn4+-Co2+. In addition, no notable difference is observed in the minor Co3+ present in both phases. Our results based on X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies (XMCD) reveal the presence of ``distinct'' high orbital moment associated with Co2+ for both phases. Thus it is found that the distinctness of the orbital moment also plays a vital role in determining the magnetic moment and T-c of both phases of LaMn0.5Co0.5O3. By considering the orbital moment obtained from XMCD, the anomaly in the paramagnetic susceptibility is resolved and thus we are able to assign the valence state to Mn4+-Co2+ configuration. The difference in the magnitude of orbital moment in both phases is believed to be due to the crystal field effects.

The use of a number of perovskite phases M MO3-x, as the only forming additive in ZnO ceramics, produces a high nonlinearity index, ?(up to 45), where M is a multivalent transition?metal ion and M is an alkaline earth or a rare?earth ion. From this study, the formation parameters crucial to high nonlinearity, such as nonstoichiometry in the as?received ZnO powder, low x values of the additives and fast cooling rate after the sintering, are explainable on the basis of a depletion layer formation at the presintering stage. This is because of the surface states arising out of the chemisorbed oxygen. The depletion layer is retained during sintering as a result of the higher valence state of M ions, preferentially present at the grain?boundary regions. The fast cooling freezes in the high?temperature concentration of donor?type defects, thereby decreasing the depletion layer width.

The Gibbs’ energies of formation of Pt5La, Pt5Ce, Pt5Pr, Pt5Tb and Pt5 Tm intermetallic compounds have been determined in the temperature range 870–1100 K using the solid state cell:Ta,M + MF3 /CaF2 /Pt5 M + Pt + MF3 ,TaTaM+MF3CaF2Pt5M+Pt+MF3Ta.The reversible emf of the cell is directly related to the Gibbs’ energy of formation of the Pt5M compound. The results can be summarized by the equations:DGf° á Pt5 La ñ = - 373,150 + 6 ·60 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Ce ñ = - 367,070 + 5 ·79 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Pr ñ = - 370,540 + 4 ·69 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Tb ñ = - 372,280 + 4 ·11 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 DGf° á Pt5 Tm ñ = - 368,230 + 4 ·89 T( ±300 )J mol - 1 Unknown control sequence '\hfill'relative to the low temperature allotropic form of the lanthanide element and solid platinum as standard states The enthalpies of formation of all the Pt5M intermetallic compounds obtained in this study are in good agreement with Miedema’s model. The experimental values are more negative than those calculated using the model. The variation of the thermodynamic properties of Pt5M compounds with atomic number of the lanthanide element is discussed in relation to valence state and molar volume.

Multiferroic nanoparticles (NPs) of pristine and Ca, Ba co-doped BiFeO3 were synthesized by a facile sal gel route. Co-doping was done by fixing the total dopant concentration at 5 mol% and then the relative concentrations of Ca and Ba was varied. Structural, optical and magnetic properties of the NPs were investigated using different techniques. UV-Vis absorption spectra of BiFeO3 NPs showed a substantial blue shift of similar to 100 nm (530 nm -> 430 nm) on Ca. Ba co-doping which corresponds to increase in band gap by 0.5 eV. Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy confirmed that iron is present only in 3(+) valence state in all co-doped samples. The coercive field increased by 18 times for Bi0.95Ca0.01Ba0.04FeO3 samples, which is the maximum enhancement, observed amongst all the 5 mol% doped samples. At the equimolar (2.5 mol % each) concentration of co-dopants, the coercive field shows a significant enhancement of about 9 times (220 Oe -> 2014 Oe) with concomitant increase in saturation magnetization by 7 times. Thus, equimolar co-doping causes simultaneous enhancement of the twin aspects of magnetic properties thereby making them better suited for device applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. We report the origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PFN) ceramic sample prepared by modified solid-state reaction synthesis by a single-step method, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), Mossbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results. Formation of single-phase monoclinic PFN ceramic with Cm space group was confirmed by XRD and ND at RT. The morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform microstructure of the sample with average grain size of similar to 2 mu m. The ND, Mossbauer spectroscopy, M-H loop and EPR studies were carried out to confirm the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. A clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop is evidenced as the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. EPR spectrum clearly shows the ferromagnetism through a good resonance signal. The symmetric EPR line shape with g = 1.9895 observed in PFN sample was identified to be due to Fe3+ ions. Mossbauer spectroscopy at RT shows superparamagnetic behaviour with presence of Fe in 3+ valence state. Ferroelectric P-E loops on PFN at RT confirm the existing ferroelectric ordering. Our observation is in agreement with literature, and it supports that the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is isolated, i.e. from different regions in the sample. Our results do not support the multiferroic nature of PFN at RT.

He II photoelectron spectra of La, Ce and Yb show features which cannot be explained in terms of single electron excitations. It is proposed that these are due to formation of electron-hole paris.

3d and 4d core-level XPS spectra for CePd3, a mixed-valence system, have been measured. Each spectrum exhibits two sets of structures, each corresponding to one of the valence states of cerium. Thus the usefulness of XPS, which has so far not been used extensively to investigate the mixed-valence cerium systems, is pointed out.

Accurate extrapolations for the ground state energy per site of the one - dimensional Kondo chain system is obtained from exact finite system calculations carried out employing a valence bond scheme. An analysis of the ground state wave function indicates that the localized spin is quenched for all nonzero values of the Kondo exchange constant in one dimension.
