In the case of reinforced concrete slabs fixed at the boundaries, considerable enhancement in the load carrying capacity takes place due to compressive membrane action. In this paper a method is presented to analyse the effects of membrane action in fixed orthotropic circular slabs, carrying uniformly distributed loads. Depending on the radial moment capacity being greater or less than the circumferential moment capacity, two cases of orthotropy have been considered. Numerical results are worked out for certain assumed physical parameters and for different coefficients of orthotropy. Variations of load and bending moments with the central deflection are presented.

The subsurface microhardness mapping technique of Chaudhri was utilized to determine the shape, size and distribution of plastic strain underneath conical indenters of varying semi-apex angles, alpha (55 degrees, 65 degrees and 75 degrees). Results show that the elastic-plastic boundary under the indenters is elliptical in nature, contradicting the expanding cavity model, and the ellipticity increases with alpha. The maximum plastic strain immediately under the indenter was found to decrease with increasing alpha. Complementary finite-element analysis was conducted to examine the ability of simulations to capture the experimental observations. A comparison of computational and experimental results indicates that the plastic strain distributions as well as the maximum strains immediately beneath the indenter do not match, suggesting that simulation of sharp indentation requires further detailed studies for complete comprehension. Representative strains, epsilon(r), evaluated as the volume-average strains within the elastic-plastic boundary, decrease with increasing alpha and are in agreement with those estimated by using the dimensional analysis. High temperature bonded interface indentation experiments are carried out on a Zr based bulk metallic glass (BMG) to examine the plastic deformation characteristics in subsurface deformation zone under a Vickers indenter. The results show that the shear bands are semi-circular in shape and propagate in radial direction. At all temperatures the inter-band spacing along the indentation axis is found to increase with increasing distance from the indenter tip. The average shear band spacing monotonically increases with temperature whereas the shear band induced plastic deformation zone is invariant with temperature. These observations are able to explain the increase in pressure sensitive plastic flow of BMGs with temperature. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The composites consisting of amorphous matrix reinforced with crystalline dendrites offer extraordinary combinations of strength, stiffness, and toughness and can be processed in bulk. Hence, they have been receiving intense research interest, with a primary focus to study their mechanical properties. In this paper, the temperature and strain rate effects on the uniaxial compression response of a tailored bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite has been investigated. Experimental results show that at temperatures ranging between ambient to 500 K and at all strain rates; the onset of plastic deformation in the composite is controlled by that in the dendrites. As the temperature is increased to the glass transition temperature of the matrix and beyond, flow in the amorphous matrix occurs readily and hence it dictates the composite's response. The role of the constituent phases in controlling the deformation mechanism of the composite has been verified by assessing the strain rate sensitivity and the activation volume for deformation. The composite is rate sensitive at room temperature with values of strain rate sensitivity and activation volume being similar to that of the dendrites. At test temperatures near to the glass transition temperature, the composite however becomes rate-insensitive corresponding to that of the matrix phase. At low strain rates, serrated flow akin to that of dynamic strain ageing in crystalline alloys was observed and the serration magnitude decreases with increasing temperature. Initiation of the shear bands at the dendrite/matrix interface and propagation of them through the matrix ligaments until their arrest at another interface is the responsible mechanism for this. Plastic limit of fine-grained soils is conventionally determined in the laboratory by the soil thread rolling method. Many adverse comments have been recorded in the geotechnical engineering literature on the method about its reproducibility and operator dependency. The presen experimental study, which is based on a well-planned and meticulously executed experimental program, critically evaluates the effect of size of the rolled soil thread on the plastic limit of fine-grained soil and the operator dependency of the results. The results have shown that if the plastic limit tests are performed by a trained operator, then consistent results can be obtained and that the effect of size of the rolled soil thread on plastic limit is negligibly small.

Ion transport in a recently demonstrated promising soft matter solid plastic-polymer electrolyte is discussed here in the context of solvent dynamics and ion association. The plastic-polymer composite electrolytes display liquid-like ionic conductivity in the solid state, compliable mechanical strength (similar to 1 MPa), and wide electrochemical voltage stability (>= 5 V). Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) dispersed in lithium perchlorate (LiClO4)-succinonitrile (SN) was chosen as the model system for the study (abbreviated LiClO4-SN:PAN). Systematic observation of various mid-infrared isomer and ion association bands as a function of temperature and polyme concentration shows an effective increase in trans conformer concentration along with free Li+ ion concentration. This strongly supports the view that enhancement in LiClO4-SN:PAN ionic conductivity over the neat plastic electrolyte (LiClO4-SN) is due to both increase in charge mobility and concentration. The ionic conductivity and infrared spectroscopy studies are supported by Brillouin light scattering. For the LiClO4-SN:PAN composites, a peak at 17 GHz was observed in addition to the normal trans-gauche isomerism (as in neat SN) at 12 GHz. The fast process is attributed to increased dynamics of those SN molecules whose energy barrier of transition from gauche to trans has reduced under influences induced by the changes in temperature and polymer concentration. The observations from ionic conductivity, spectroscopy, and light scattering studies were further supplemented by temperature dependent nuclear magnetic resonance H-1 and Li-7 line width measurements.

The plastic flow of quenched aluminium at 86°K was investigated by ‘differential-stress’ creep tests in order to evaluate the rate-controlling mechanism in as-quenched and fully aged states. The experimental values of activation volume (4·3 × 10−21 cm3 for as-quenched and 5·5×l0−21cm3 for fully aged) and the total energy for thermal activation process (0·4 ev for both) are in accordance with the jog hardening and loop hardening mechanisms in quenched and fully aged states respectively.

By using the method of characteristics, the effect of footing-soil interface friction angle (delta) on the bearing capacity factor N-gamma was computed for a strip footing. The analysis was performed by employing a curved trapped wedge under the footing base; this wedge joins the footing base at a distance B-t from the footing edge. For a given footing width (B), the value of B-t increases continuously with a decrease in delta. For delta = 0, no trapped wedge exists below the footing base, that is, B-t/B = 0.5. On the contrary, with delta = phi, the point of emergence of the trapped wedge approaches toward the footing edge with an increase in phi. The magnitude of N-gamma increases substantially with an increase in delta/phi. The maximum depth of the plastic zone becomes higher for greater values of delta/phi. The results from the present analysis were found to compare well with those reported in the literature.

In this work, two families of asymptotic near-tip stress fields are constructed in an elastic-ideally plastic FCC single crystal under mode I plane strain conditions. A crack is taken to lie on the (010) plane and its front is aligned along the [(1) over bar 01] direction. Finite element analysis is first used to systematically examine the stress distributions corresponding to different constraint levels. The general framework developed by Rice (Mech Mater 6:317-335, 1987) and Drugan (J Mech Phys Solids 49:2155-2176, 2001) is then adopted to generate low triaxiality solutions by introducing an elastic sector near the crack tip. The two families of stress fields are parameterized by the normalized opening stress (tau(A)(22)/tau(o)) prevailing in the plastic sector in front of the tip and by the coordinates of a point where elastic unloading commences in stress space. It is found that the angular stress variations obtained from the analytical solutions show good agreement with finite element analysis.

Enthalpy changes of the crystal-plastic and plastic-liquid transitions are related to the temperature range of stability of the plastic phase. Thermodynamics of the plastic state of binary mixtures have been examined. Infrared correlation times, τc, and activation energies have been measured for a few molecules in the plastic state. Molecular tumbling times, τt, have also been measured employing ESR spectra of a spin-probe. Plots of log τc(τt) 1/T are continuous through the plastic-liquid transition. Activation energies for molecular motion seem to vary in the same direction as the ΔH of the plastic-crystal transition. Infrared correlation times of solute molecules in binary solutions in the plastic and the liquid states show interesting variations with solute concentration.

The plastic response of a segment of a simply supported orthotropic spherical shell under a uniform blast loading applied on the convex surface of the shell is presented. The blast is assumed to impart a uniform velocity to the shell surface initially. The material of the shell is orthotropic obeying a modified Tresca yield hypersurface conditions and the associated flow rules. The deformation of the shell is determined during all phases of its motion by considering the motion of plastic hinges in different regimes of flow. Numerical results presented include the permanent deformed configuration of the shell and the total time of shell response for different degrees of orthotropy. Conclusions regarding the plastic behaviour of spherical shells with circumferential and meridional stiffening under uniform blast load are presented.

Bearing area analysis has been used to study the real area of contact and compliance of rough turned steel cylinders in compression. Calculations show that the elastic real area of contact is very small compared to the plastic real area of contact, and that local compliance due to flattening of asperity tips is a small proportion of the total compliance obtained from experiments. The fact that increased load brings more and more new asperities under load rather than enlarging the contact spots leads to a rather simple load-compliance relation for a rough cylinder, viz., W' = Nh · K1δn, where W0 = K1δn defines the load-compliance relation of the individual asperities, and Nh represents the number of asperities bearing the load.

The influences of the amorphous matrix and crystalline dendrite phases on the hardness and elastic moduli of Zr/Ti-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites have been assessed. While the moduli of the composites correspond to those predicted by the rule of mixtures, the hardness of the composites is similar to that of the matrix, suggesting that the plastic flow in the composites under constrained conditions such as indentation is controlled by the flow resistance of the contiguous matrix. Important issues of water and thermal history affecting ion transport in a representative plastic crystalline lithium salt electrolyte: succinonitrile (SN)-lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) are discussed here. Ionic conductivity of electrolytes with high lithium salt amounts (similar to 1 M) in SN at a particular temperature is known to be influenced both by the trans-gauche isomerism and ion association (solvation), the two most important intrinsic parameters of the plastic solvent. In the present study both water and thermal history influence SN and result in enhancement of ionic conductivity of 1 M LiClO4-SN electrolyte. Systematic observations reveal that the presence of water in varying amounts promote ion-pair dissociation in the electrolyte. While trace amounts (approximate to 1-15 ppm) do not affect the trans-gauche isomerism of SN, the presence of water in large amounts (approximate to 5500 ppm) submerges the plasticity of SN. Subjugating the electrolyte to different thermal protocol resulted in enhancement of trans concentration only. This is an interesting observation as it demonstrates a simple and effective procedure involving utilization of an optimized set of external parameters to decouple solvation from trans-gauche isomerism. Observations from the ionic conductivity of various samples were accounted by changes in signature isomer and ion-association bands in the mid-IR regime and also from plastic to normal crystal transition temperature peak obtained from thermal studies.
