High temperature reaction calorimetry using molten lead berate as solvent has been used to study the thermochemistry of NdMnO3, YMnO3, La1-xSrxMnO3 (with 0 < x < 0.5), and Ln(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3) (with Ln = La, Nd, Y), The enthalpies of formation of these multicomponent oxides from their binary constituents have been calculated from the measured enthalpy of drop solution, The energetic stability of the perovskite depends on the size of the A cation, The enthalpy of formation of YMnO3 (smallest A cation) is more endothermic than those of NdMnO3 and LaMnO3. The energetics of the perovskite also depends on the oxidation state of the B site's ions. In the La1-xSrxMnO3 system, the energetic stability of the structure increases with the Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio, The new values of the enthalpies of oxidations, with reliable standard entropies, were used to plot the phase stability diagram of the lanthanum-manganese-oxygen system in the temperature range 300-1100 K, The LaMnO3/MnO phase boundary evaluated in this study agrees with the one published by Atsumi et nl. calculated from thermogravimetric and conductivity measurements.

Giant magnetoresistance (GMR), which was until recently confined to magnetic layered and granular materials, as well as doped magnetic semiconductors, occurs in manganate perovskites of the general formula Ln(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (Ln = rare earth; A = divalent ion). These manganates are ferromagnetic at or above a certain value of x (or Mn4+ content) and become metallic at temperatures below the curie temperature, T-c. GMR is generally a maximum close to T-c or the insulator-metal (I-M) transition temperature, T-im. The T-c and %MR are markedly affected by the size of the A site cation, [r(A)], thereby affording a useful electronic phase diagram when T-c or T-im is plotted against [r(A)]. We discuss GMR and related properties of manganates in polycrystalline, thin-film, and single-crystal forms and point out certain commonalities and correlations. We also examine some unusual features in the electron-transport properties of manganates, in particular charge-ordering effects. Charge ordering is crucially dependent on [r(A)] or the e(g) band width, and the charge-ordered insulating state transforms to a metallic ferromagnetic state on the application of a magnetic field.

We have measured the thermopower (S) of hole-doped LaMnO3 systems in order to see its dependence on the Mn4+ content as well as to investigate other crucial factors that determine S. We have carried out hole doping (creation of Mn4+ by two distinct means, namely, by the substitution of La by divalent cations such as Ca and Sr and by self-doping without aliovalent substitution). The thermopower is sensitive not only to the hole concentration but also to the process employed for hole doping, which we explain as arising from the differences in the nature of the hole-doped states. We also point out a general trend in the dependence of S on hole concentration at high temperatures (T> T-c), similar to that found in the normal-state thermopower of the cuprates.

The application of radical-mediated cyclizations and annulations in organic synthesis has grown in importance steadily over the years to reach the present status where they are now routinely used in the strategy-level planning.2 The presence of a quaternary carbon atom is frequently encountered in terpenoid natural products, and it often creates a synthetic challenge when two or more quaternary carbon atoms are present in a contiguous manner.3 Even though creation of a quaternary carbon atom by employing a tertiary radical is very facile, creation of a quaternary carbon atom (or a spiro carbon atom) via radical addition onto a fully substituted olefinic carbon atom is not that common but of synthetic importance. For example, the primary radical derived from the bromide 1 failed to cyclize to generate the two vicinal quaternary carbon atoms and resulted in only the reduced product 2.4 The tricyclic carbon framework tricyclo[6.2.1.01,5]undecane (3) is present in a number of sesquiterpenoids e.g. zizzanes, prelacinanes, etc.5

In this article, a non-autonomous (time-varying) semilinear system is considered and its approximate controllability is investigated. The notion of 'bounded integral contractor', introduced by Altman, has been exploited to obtain sufficient conditions for approximate controllability. This condition is weaker than Lipschitz condition. The main theorems of Naito [11, 12] are obtained as corollaries of our main results. An example is also given to show how our results weaken the conditions assumed by Sukavanam[17].

A pseudo-dynamical approach for a class of inverse problems involving static measurements is proposed and explored. Following linearization of the minimizing functional associated with the underlying optimization problem, the new strategy results in a system of linearized ordinary differential equations (ODEs) whose steady-state solutions yield the desired reconstruction. We consider some explicit and implicit schemes for integrating the ODEs and thus establish a deterministic reconstruction strategy without an explicit use of regularization. A stochastic reconstruction strategy is then developed making use of an ensemble Kalman filter wherein these ODEs serve as the measurement model. Finally, we assess the numerical efficacy of the developed tools against a few linear and nonlinear inverse problems of engineering interest.

The use of two liquid crystals as solvents in the determination of molecular structure has been demonstrated for systems which do not provide structural information from studies in a single solvent owing to the fact that the spectra are deceptively simple, with the result that all the spectral parameters cannot be derived with reasonable precision. The specific system studied was 2-(p-bromophenyl)-4,6-dichloropyrimidine, for which relative inter-proton discances have been determined from the proton NMR spectra in two nematic solvents.

Simultaneous consideration of both performance and reliability issues is important in the choice of computer architectures for real-time aerospace applications. One of the requirements for such a fault-tolerant computer system is the characteristic of graceful degradation. A shared and replicated resources computing system represents such an architecture. In this paper, a combinatorial model is used for the evaluation of the instruction execution rate of a degradable, replicated resources computing system such as a modular multiprocessor system. Next, a method is presented to evaluate the computation reliability of such a system utilizing a reliability graph model and the instruction execution rate. Finally, this computation reliability measure, which simultaneously describes both performance and reliability, is applied as a constraint in an architecture optimization model for such computing systems. This paper presents three methodologies for determining optimum locations and magnitudes of reactive power compensation in power distribution systems. Method I and Method II are suitable for complex distribution systems with a combination of both radial and ring-main feeders and having different voltage levels. Method III is suitable for low-tension single voltage level radial feeders. Method I is based on an iterative scheme with successive powerflow analyses, with formulation and solution of the optimization problem using linear programming. Method II and Method III are essentially based on the steady state performance of distribution systems. These methods are simple to implement and yield satisfactory results comparable with the results of Method I. The proposed methods have been applied to a few distribution systems, and results obtained for two typical systems are presented for illustration purposes.

LIII absorption edge measurements clearly delineate 3+ and 4+ states of Ce. Absorption edges of 3+ compounds show a single peak, while those of 4+ compounds show two peaks, both appearing at higher energies than the characteristic peaks of 3+ compounds. In systems where there is interconfigurational fluctuation, features due to both 3+ and 4+ states are distinctly seen.

Abstract-The success of automatic speaker recognition in laboratory environments suggests applications in forensic science for establishing the Identity of individuals on the basis of features extracted from speech. A theoretical model for such a verification scheme for continuous normaliy distributed featureIss developed. The three cases of using a) single feature, b)multipliendependent measurements of a single feature, and c)multpleindependent features are explored. The number iofndependent features needed for areliable personal identification is computed based on the theoretcal model and an expklatory study of some speech featues.

The so-called “Scheme of Squares”, displaying an interconnectivity of heterogeneous electron transfer and homogeneous (e.g., proton transfer) reactions, is analysed. Explicit expressions for the various partial currents under potentiostatic conditions are given. The formalism is applicable to several electrode geometries and models (e.g., semi-infinite linear diffusion, rotating disk electrodes, spherical or cylindrical systems) and the analysis is exact. The steady-state (t→∞) expressions for the current are directly given in terms of constant matrices whereas the transients are obtained as Laplace transforms that need to be inverted by approximation of numerical methods. The methodology employs a systems approach which replaces a system of partial differential equations (governing the concentrations of the several electroactive species) by an equivalent set of difference equations obeyed by the various partial currents.
