We propose a novel algorithm for placement of standard cells in VLSI circuits based on an analogy of this problem with neural networks. By employing some of the organising principles of these nets, we have attempted to improve the behaviour of the bipartitioning method as proposed by Kernighan and Lin. Our algorithm yields better quality placements compared with the above method, and also makes the final placement independent of the initial partition.

We investigate e(+)e(-) -> gamma gamma process within the Seiberg-Witten expanded noncommutative standard model (NCSM) scenario in the presence of anomalous triple gauge boson couplings. This study is done with and without initial beam polarization and we restrict ourselves to leading order effects of noncommutativity i.e. O(Theta). The noncommutative (NC) corrections are sensitive to the electric component ((Theta) over bar (E)) of NC parameter. We include the effects of Earth's rotation in our analysis. This study is done by investigating the effects of noncommutativity on different time averaged cross section observables. We have also defined forward backward asymmetries which will be exclusively sensitive to anomalous couplings. We have looked into the sensitivity of these couplings at future experiments at the International Linear Collider (ILC). This analysis is done under realistic ILC conditions with the center of mass energy (cm.) root s = 800 GeV and integrated luminosity L = 500 fb(-1). The scale of noncommutativity is assumed to be Lambda = 1 TeV. The limits on anomalous couplings of the order 10(-1) from forward backward asymmetries while much stringent limits of the order 10(-2) from total cross section are obtained if no signal beyond SM is seen. Type Ia supernovae, sparked off by exploding white dwarfs of mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit, play the key role in understanding the expansion rate of the Universe. However, recent observations of several peculiar type Ia supernovae argue for its progenitor mass to be significantly super-Chandrasekhar. We show that strongly magnetized white dwarfs not only can violate the Chandrasekhar mass limit significantly, but exhibit a different mass limit. We establish from a foundational level that the generic mass limit of white dwarfs is 2.58 solar mass. This explains the origin of overluminous peculiar type Ia supernovae. Our finding further argues for a possible second standard candle, which has many far reaching implications, including a possible reconsideration of the expansion history of the Universe. We study the tunneling density of states (TDOS) for a junction of three Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid wires. We show that there are fixed points which allow for the enhancement of the TDOS, which is unusual for Luttinger liquids. The distance from the junction over which this enhancement occurs is of the order of x=v/(2 omega), where v is the plasmon velocity and omega is the bias frequency. Beyond this distance, the TDOS crosses over to the standard bulk value independent of the fixed point describing the junction. This finite range of distances opens up the possibility of experimentally probing the enhancement in each wire individually.

In supersymmetric theories with R-parity violation, squarks and sleptons can mediate Standard Model fermion–fermion scattering processes. These scalar exchanges in e+e− initiated reactions can give new signals at future linear colliders. We explore use of transverse beam polarization in the study of these signals in the process View the MathML source. We highlight certain asymmetries, which can be constructed due to the existence of the transverse beam polarization, which offer discrimination from the Standard Model (SM) background and provide increased sensitivity to the R-parity violating couplings.

This work deals with the formulation and implementation of finite deformation viscoplasticity within the framework of stress-based hybrid finite element methods. Hybrid elements, which are based on a two-field variational formulation, are much less susceptible to locking than conventional displacement-based elements. The conventional return-mapping scheme cannot be used in the context of hybrid stress methods since the stress is known, and the strain and the internal plastic variables have to be recovered using this known stress field. We discuss the formulation and implementation of the consistent tangent tensor, and the return-mapping algorithm within the context of the hybrid method. We demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm on a wide range of problems.

Testing for mutagenicity and carcinogenicity has become an integral part of the toxicological evaluation of drugs and chemicals. Standard carcinogenicity tests in vivo require both large numbers of animals and prolonged experiments. To circumvent these problems, several rapid tests have been developed for preliminary screening of mutagens and carcinogens in vitro. Ames and his associates, the first to develop a mutation test, used mutant strains of Salmonella typhimurium [1]. Mutation tests with Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Neurospora crassa and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and DNA-repair tests with E. coli and B. subtilis, have been developed. Cytogenetic assays, in vivo as well as in vitro, in both plant and animal systems, are also used to detect potential mutagens and carcinogens. Transfection is inhibited by base mutation, cleavage of DNA, loss of cohesive ends, interaction with histones, spermidine, nalidixic acid, etc. [3]. The efficiency of transfection is affected by temperature, DNA structure and the condition of the competence of the recipient cells [3]. Transfection assays with phages MS: RNA and ~i, x 174-DNA have been reported [15]. A fast and easy transfection assay using colitis bacteriophage DNA is reported in this communication.

Non-standard finite difference methods (NSFDM) introduced by Mickens [Non-standard Finite Difference Models of Differential Equations, World Scientific, Singapore, 1994] are interesting alternatives to the traditional finite difference and finite volume methods. When applied to linear hyperbolic conservation laws, these methods reproduce exact solutions. In this paper, the NSFDM is first extended to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, by a novel utilization of the decoupled equations using characteristic variables. In the second part of this paper, the NSFDM is studied for its efficacy in application to nonlinear scalar hyperbolic conservation laws. The original NSFDMs introduced by Mickens (1994) were not in conservation form, which is an important feature in capturing discontinuities at the right locations. Mickens [Construction and analysis of a non-standard finite difference scheme for the Burgers–Fisher equations, Journal of Sound and Vibration 257 (4) (2002) 791–797] recently introduced a NSFDM in conservative form. This method captures the shock waves exactly, without any numerical dissipation. In this paper, this algorithm is tested for the case of expansion waves with sonic points and is found to generate unphysical expansion shocks. As a remedy to this defect, we use the strategy of composite schemes [R. Liska, B. Wendroff, Composite schemes for conservation laws, SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis 35 (6) (1998) 2250–2271] in which the accurate NSFDM is used as the basic scheme and localized relaxation NSFDM is used as the supporting scheme which acts like a filter. Relaxation schemes introduced by Jin and Xin [The relaxation schemes for systems of conservation laws in arbitrary space dimensions, Communications in Pure and Applied Mathematics 48 (1995) 235–276] are based on relaxation systems which replace the nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws by a semi-linear system with a stiff relaxation term. The relaxation parameter (λ) is chosen locally on the three point stencil of grid which makes the proposed method more efficient. This composite scheme overcomes the problem of unphysical expansion shocks and captures the shock waves with an accuracy better than the upwind relaxation scheme, as demonstrated by the test cases, together with comparisons with popular numerical methods like Roe scheme and ENO schemes.

The search and the probe of the fundamental properties of Higgs boson(s) and, in particular, the determination of their charge conjugation and parity (CP) quantum numbers, are the main tasks of future high-energy colliders. We demonstrate that the CP properties of a standard model-like Higgs particle can be unambiguously assessed by measuring just the total cross section and the top polarization in associated Higgs boson production with top quark pairs in e(+)e(-) collisions.

The out-diffusion of germanium from the core of a photosensitive fiber under elevated temperature is exploited to form a Fabry-Perot filter within a single fiber Bragg grating, by subjecting the diffused region to a single exposure using the standard phase-mask technique. A key aspect of our work is the measurement of the out-diffusion through energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of the above single-grating filter for discrimination and simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. The proposed technique provides a significant advantage over other existing methods that require at least two gratings.

A low strain shear modulus plays a fundamental role in the estimation of site response parameters In this study an attempt has been made to develop the relationships between standard penetration test (SPT) N values with the low strain shear modulus (G(max)) For this purpose, field experiments SPT and multichannel analysis of surface wave data from 38 locations in Bangalore, India, have been used, which were also used for seismic microzonation project The in situ density of soil layer was evaluated using undisturbed soil samples from the boreholes Shear wave velocity (V-s) profiles with depth were obtained for the same locations or close to the boreholes The values for low strain shear modulus have been calculated using measured V-s and soil density About 215 pairs of SPT N and G(max) values are used for regression analysis The differences between fitted regression relations using measured and corrected values were analyzed It is found that an uncorrected value of N and modulus gives the best fit with a high regression coefficient when compared to corrected N and corrected modulus values This study shows better correlation between measured values of N and G(max) when compared to overburden stress corrected values of N and G(max)

The Gibbs' energies of formation of BaCuO2, Y2Cu2O5 and Y2BaCuO5 from component oxides have been measured using solid state galvanic cells incorporating CaF2 as the solid electrolyte under pure oxygen at a pressure of 1.01 x 10(5) Pa Because the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3O7-delta coexists with any two of the phases CuO, BaCuO2 and Y2BaCuO5, the data on BaCuO2 and Y2BaCuO5 obtained in this study provide the basis for the evaluation of the Gibbs' energy of formation of the 1-2-3 compound at high temperatures.
