The problem of non-destructive determination of the state-of-charge of zinc- and magnesium-manganese dioxide dry batteries is examined experimentally from the viewpoint of internal impedance and open-circuit voltage at equilibrium. It is shown that the impedance is mainly charge-transfer controlled at relatively high states-of-charge and progressively changes over to diffusion control as the state-of-charge decreases in the case of zinc-manganese dioxide dry batteries. On the other hand, the impedance is mainly diffusion controlled for undischarged batteries but becomes charge-transfer controlled as soon as there is some discharge in the case of magnesium-manganese dioxide batteries. It is concluded that the determination of state-of-charge is not possible for both types of batteries by the measurement of impedance parameters due to film-induced fluctuations of these parameters. The measurement of open-circuit voltage at equilibrium can be used as a state-of-charge indicator for Zn-MnO2 batteries but not for Mg-MnO2 batteries.

Thermal decomposition of powdered ammonium perchlorate, catalysed by manganese dioxide (MnO2), has been studied in the low concentration ranges of the catalyst. MnO2 sensitises the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate. The activation energy estimations of catalysed ammonium perchlorate show that the value is about 30 kcal/mol throughout the low and the high temperature regions whereas uncatalysed ammonium perchlorate gives two activation energies, 20 kcal/mol in the low temperature region (280-320°C) and 60 kcal/mol in the higher temperature region (350-390°C). This behaviour has been explained on the basis of an electron transfer process. The effectiveness of MnO2 in the thermal decomposition further increases on pre-heating the sample at 50°C for two weeks; manganese ions enter the ammonium perchlorate lattice during the process of pre-heating.

Batch adsorption of fluoride onto manganese dioxide-coated activated alumina (MCAA) has been studied. Adsorption experiments were carried out at various pH (3–9), time interval (0–6 h), adsorbent dose (1–16 g/l), initial fluoride concentration (1–25 mg/l) and in the presence of different anions. Adsorption isotherms have been modeled using Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin–Raduskevich isotherms and adsorption followed Langmuir isotherm model. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption followed second-order rate kinetics. MCAA could remove fluoride effectively (up to 0.2 mg/l) at pH 7 in 3 h with 8 g/l adsorbent dose when 10 mg/l of fluoride was present in 50 ml of water. In the presence of other anions, the adsorption of fluoride was retared. The mechanism of fluoride uptake by MCAA is due to physical adsorption as well as through intraparticle diffusion which was confirmed by kinetics, Dubinin–Raduskevich isotherm, zeta-potential measurements and mapping studies of energy-dispersive analysis of X-ray.

Manganese dioxide nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction route at different growth temperatures of 40 degrees C, 80 degrees C, 100 degrees C and were characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA) analysis. FESEM results show that on increasing growth temperature the morphology changes from clusters into mixture of rods and flakes. XPS analysis reveals the formation of MnO2. Then these particles were immobilized on Pt electrode. A platinum (Pt) electrode modified with low dimensional MnO2 was investigated as a chronoamperometric (CA) sensor for hydrogen peroxide sensing (H2O2). The sample prepared at 100 degrees C shows good electrocatalytic ability for H2O2 sensing when compared with the samples prepared at 40 degrees C and 80 degrees C. At an operating potential of 0.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl catalytic oxidation of the analyte is measured for chronoamperometric (CA) monitoring. The CA signals are linearly proportional to the concentration of H2O2. It is also found that the morphology of the nanostructure plays a vital role in the detection of H2O2. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Binary room temperature molten electrolytes based on acetamide and zinc perchlorate have been prepared and characterized. The electrolytes are found to be highly zinc ion-conducting with very favorable physicochemical and electrochemical characteristics. Raman and infrared spectroscopic studies reveal the presence of large free-ion concentration in the molten liquid. This is corroborated by the high conductivity observed under ambient conditions. Rechargeable zinc batteries assembled using gamma-MnO2 as the cathode and Zn as the anode with the molten electrolyte show high discharge capacities over several cycles, indicating excellent reversibility. This unique class of acetamide-based, room temperature molten liquids may become viable and green alternative electrolytes for rechargeable zinc-based secondary batteries. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Bacteria play a vital role in bringing about Mn(II) oxidation in the natural environment. A study was conducted to identify the potential threat offered by these bacteria in bringing about biomineralisation of manganese dioxide on titanium surfaces exposed to seawater. During the study it was observed that the bacteria such as Pseudomonas and Bacillus formed brown colonies on agar plates amended with Mn2+ indicating their ability to oxidize Mn(II). These colonies showed distinct morphologies when grown on plates containing Mn(II) while they formed normal colonies in the absence of Mn.(II).Hence it is possible that these morphologically distinct structures produced by the bacterial colonies assist these bacteria to perform this function of Mn-oxidation.

The electrochemical properties of the film-covered anode/solution interface in the magnesium/ manganese dioxide dry cell have been evaluated. The most plausible electrical equivalent circuit description of the Mg/solution interface with the passive film intact, has been identified. These results are based on the analysis of ac impedance and voltage transient measurements made on the dry cell under conditions which cause no damage to the protective passive film on the anode. The study demonstrates the complementary character of impedance and transient measurements when widely different frequency ranges are sampled in each type of investigation. The values and temperature dependence of the anode-film resistance, film capacitance, double-layer capacitance and charge-transfer resistance of the film-covered magnesium/solution interface have been determined. The magnitude of these values and its implications in understanding the important performance aspects of the magnesium/manganese dioxide dry cell are discussed. The study may be extended, in principle, to Li, Al and Ca batteries.

α-Manganese dioxide is synthesized in a microemulsion medium by a redox reaction between KMnO4 and MnSO4 in presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate as a surface active agent. The morphology of MnO2 resembles nanopetals, which are spread parallel to the field. The material is further characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area. Supercapacitance property of α-MnO2 nanopetals is studied by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge cycling. High values of specific capacitance are obtained.

Manganese dioxide is known to be an important electroactive material for supercapacitors. Generally, delta-MnO2 is subjected to electrochemical characterization studies in aqueous electrolytes of Na2SO4. It exhibits capacitance behaviour in the potential range between 0 and 1.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). In the present study, it is shown that delta-MnO2 exhibits capacitance behaviour in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolytes also. The suitable potential range in this electrolyte is also found to be 0-1.0 V. Specific capacitancemeasured in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolyte is 192 F g(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data confirm that Sr2+ ions get inserted onto delta-MnO2 anoparticles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The temperature and frequency dependence of dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss of nanosized Mn1-xZnxFe2O4 (for x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) were investigated. The impact of zinc substitution on the dielectric properties of the mixed ferrite is elucidated. Strong dielectric dispersion and broad relaxation were exhibited by Mn1-xZnxFe2O4. The variation of dielectric relaxation time with temperature suggests the involvement of multiple relaxation processes. Cole-Cole plots were employed as an effective tool for studying the observed phenomenon. The activation energies were calculated from relaxation peaks and Cole-Cole plots and found to be consistent with each other and indicative of a polaron conduction.

Room-temperature zinc ion-conducting molten electrolytes based on acetamide, urea, and zinc perchlorate or zinc triflate have been prepared and characterized by various physicochemical, spectroscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The ternary molten electrolytes are easy to prepare and can be handled under ambient conditions. They show excellent stability, high ionic conductivity, relatively low viscosity, and other favorable physicochemical and electrochemical properties that make them good electrolytes for rechargeable zinc batteries. Specific conductivities of 3.4 and 0.5 mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C are obtained for zinc-perchlorate-and zinc-triflate-containing melts, respectively. Vibrational spectroscopic data reveal that the free ion concentration is high in the optimized composition. Rechargeable Zn batteries have been assembled using the molten electrolytes, with gamma-MnO2 as the positive electrode and Zn as the negative electrode. They show excellent electrochemical characteristics with high discharge capacities. This study opens up the possibility of using acetamide-based molten electrolytes as alternate electrolytes in rechargeable zinc batteries. (C) 2009 The Electrochemical Society.

Nanoparticles are highly used in biological applications including nanomedicine. In this present study, the interaction of HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HCC) with hydroxyapatite (HAp), zinc-doped hydroxyapatite, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were investigated. Hydroxyapatite, zinc-doped hydroxyapatite and titanium dioxide nanoparticles were prepared by wet precipitation method. They were subjected to isochronal annealing at different temperatures. Particle morphology and size distribution were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope. The nanoparticles were co-cultured with HepG2 cells. MTT assay was employed to evaluate the proliferation of tumor cells. The DNA damaging effect of HAp, Zn-doped HAp, and TiO2 nanoparticles in human hepatoma cells (HepG2) were evaluated using DNA fragmentation studies. The results showed that in HepG2 cells, the anti-tumor activity strongly depend on the size of nanoparticles in HCC cells. Cell cycle arrest analysis for HAp, zinc-doped HAp, and TiO2 nanoparticles revealed the influence of HAp, zinc-doped HAp, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the apoptosis of HepG2 cells. The results imply that the novel nano nature effect plays an important role in the biomedicinal application of nanoparticles.

Primary and secondary zinc-air batteries based on ceramic, stable, one dimensional titanium carbonitride (TiCN) nanostructures are reported. The optimized titanium carbonitride composition by density functional theory reveals their good activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Electrochemical measurements show their superior performance for the ORR in alkaline media coupled with favourable kinetics. The nanostructured TiCN lends itself amenable to be used as an air cathode material in primary and rechargeable zinc-air batteries. The battery performance and cyclability are found to be good. Further, we have demonstrated a gel-based electrolyte for rechargeable zinc-air batteries based on a TiCN cathode under ambient, atmospheric conditions without any oxygen supply from a cylinder. The present cell can work at current densities of 10-20 mA cm(2) (app. 10 000 mA g(-1) of TiCN) for several hours (63 h in the case of 10 mA cm(-2)) with a charge retention of 98%. The low cost, noble metal-free, mechanically stable and corrosion resistant TiCN is a very good alternative to Pt for metal-air battery chemistry.
