It is a well know that electrons and positive ions are responsible in the case of electric spark. Investigation have been undertaken in the high voltage laboratory to study the effect of injecting ions (both possitive and negative)into the spark gap. Also the effect of paper screens in blocking the ions being invetsigated.

A wire-cylinder corona discharge was studied in nitrogen and dry air in crossed electric and magnetic fields for values of magnetic field ranging from 0 to 3000 G with the wire at positive potential. In the absence of a magnetic field pre-onset streamers and pulses were observed in nitrogen. In both nitrogen and dry air breakdown streamers were observed just before spark breakdown of the gap. Furthermore, experiments in dry air at atmospheric pressure in an electric field indicate regular pre-onset streamers appearing at time intervals of 19.5 µs. The appearance of regular pre-onset streamers suggests that it is not possible for negative ions to form a sheath close to the anode as postulated by Hermstein (1960) for the formation of steady or glow corona in a point-plane gap.

Arc discharge between graphite electrodes under a relatively high pressure of hydrogen yields graphene flakes generally containing 2-4 layers in the inner wall region of the arc chamber. The graphene flakes so obtained have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The method is eminently suited to dope graphene with boron and nitrogen by carrying out arc discharge in the presence of diborane and pyridine respectively.

This paper reports the electrical discharge resistant characteristics of epoxy nanocomposite systems with SiO2 and Al2O3 nano-fillers. A comparative study is performed between unfilled epoxy systems, nanoparticle filled epoxy systems and a bimodal system containing both micrometer and nanometer sized fillers of the same material. The samples are exposed to surface discharges and the levels of surface degradation are analyzed through SEM and surface roughness measurements. Significant variations were observed in the electrical discharge resistant characteristics between the different composite systems and it is seen that the introduction of nano-fillers to epoxy is advantageous in improving the electrical discharge resistance of epoxy.

1. The electric field strength between coplanar electrodes is calculated employing "conformal transformations." The electron multiplication factor is then computed in the nonuniform field region. These calculations have been made for different gap lengths, voltages, and also for different gases and gas pressures. The configuration results in a curved discharge path. It is found that the electron multiplication is maximum along a particular flux line and the prebreakdown discharge is expected to follow this flux line. Experimental tubes incorporating several coplanar gaps have been fabricated. Breakdown voltages have been measured for various discharge gaps and also for various gases such as xenon, helium, neon, argon, and neon-argon mixture (99.5:0.5) at different filling pressures. The variation of breakdown voltage with pressure and gap length is discussed. The observed discharge paths are curved and this is in agreement with theoretical results. A few experimental single-digit coplanar gas-discharge displays (CGDD's) with digit height of 5 cm have been fabricated and dependence of their characteristics on various parameters, including spacing between top glass plate and bottom substrate, have been studied.

In this study, reduction and desorption of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) were conducted using an electrical discharge plasma technique. The study was carried out using a simulated gas mixture to explore the possibility of re-generation of used adsorbents by a nonthermal plasma desorption technique. Three different types of corona electrodes, namely, pipe, helical wire, and straight wire, were used for analyzing their effectiveness in NOx reduction/desorption. The pipe-type corona electrode exhibited a nitric oxide (NO) conversion of 50%, which is 1.5 times that of the straight-wire-type electrode at an energy density of 175J/L. The helical-wire-type corona electrode exhibited a NOx desorption efficiency almost 4 times that of the pipe-type electrode, indicating the possibility that corona-generated species play a crucial role in desorption.

Purity of the glow-discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure for surface modification applications is always debatable, since it works at ambient atmosphere. We have demonstrated on the use of optical emission spectroscopy to test the purity of this kind of plasma. The effect of gas flow pattern, nature of gas, and its flow rate on the plasma chemistry was studied. The importance of proper system design in maintaining a uniform flow of heavy and inert gases as carrier gas in atmospheric glow-discharge plasma was confirmed. The surface of a plasma-treated PET sample was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to verify the studies on plasma purity done using emission spectrum.

Experimental results on the effect of energy deposition using an electric arc discharge, upstream of a 60° half angle blunt cone configuration in a hypersonic flow is reported.Investigations involving drag measurements and high speed schlieren flow visualization have been carried out in hypersonic shock tunnel using air and argon as the test gases; and an unsteady drag reduction of about 50% (maximum reduction) has been observed in the energy deposition experiments done in argon environment. These studies also show that the effect of discharge on the flow field is more pronounced in argon environment as compared to air, which confirms that thermal effects are mainly responsible for flow alteration in presence of the discharge.

An investigation of power frequency (50 Hz) surface partial discharges in dry air, using 21r/3 Rogowski profile electrodes in the low pressure range of 0.067 to 91.333 kPa, shows that for the discharges occurring symmetrically around the electrodes and just outside the uniform field region, the breakdown voltages are 20 to 30% lower than those accounted for by the usual Paschen values. Emphasis, therefore, has been given to modified values of breakdown voltages for any useful calculations. The effect of reduced pressure on inception voltage has been discussed and an attempt has been made to explain the difference between the observed and calculated values on the basis of a pressure-dependent secondary ionization coefficient. It is shown that increasing the insulation thickness in a critical pressure range (0.067 to 0.400 kPa) does not allow any significant increase in the discharge free working stress of the insulation system. At higher pressures (>0.400 kPa) the increase in inception voltage with thickness and pressure follows an equation which is expected to hold for other insulating materials as well.

Relative abundance distributions of multiply-charged ionic species have been measured for the RF spark and vacuum vibrator are ion sources, for a number of elements. An attempt has been made to explain the observed charge state distribution on the basis of models for the arc and spark plasma. The difficulties in the way of explaining the observed charge state distributions, using the LTE model with Saha distribution as well as the corona model, are pointed out. The distribution can be explained by a diffusion-dominated plasma model with known or calculated values for ionization cross-sections, the single impact model being suitable for the RF spark and the multiple impact model for the vibrator arc.

Hydrothermal treatment of a slurry of badly crystalline (beta(bc)) nickel hydroxide at different temperatures (65-170 degrees C) results in the progressive ordering of the structure by the step-wise elimination of disorders. Interstratification is eliminated at 140 degrees C, while cation vacancies are eliminated at 170 degrees C. A small percentage of stacking faults continue to persist even in `crystalline' samples. Electrochemical investigations show that the crystalline nickel hydroxide has a very low (0.4 e/Ni) reversible charge storage capacity. An incidence of at least 15% stacking faults combined with cation vacancies is essential for nickel hydroxide to perform close to its theoretical (1 e/ Ni) discharge capacity. With the use of the quartz fiber spring balance, sorptions and desorptions of water on silica gel at 30°C were studied and the permanent and reproducible hysteresis loop was obtained. At different points on the desorption curve forming the loop, the gel was subjected to high tension glow electric discharge. As a result of the electric discharge, the gel at any point on the desorption curve shifts to a corresponding point on the sorption curve. This is due to the release from the cavities of gel of the entrapped water held in a metastable state. The electric discharge has no effect on the gel at different points on portions of the desorption curve which coincide with the sorption curve and also on the sorption curve itself, indicating the absence of entrapped water in the gel in these regions. The results afford direct experimental evidence of the reality of the cavity theory of sorption-desorption hysteresis.
