Inventory Management (IM) plays a decisive role in the enhancement of efficiency and competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises. Therefore, major manufacturing enterprises are following IM practices as a strategy to improve efficiency and achieve competitiveness. However, the spread of IM culture among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is limited due to lack of initiation, expertise and financial limitations in developed countries, leave alone developing countries. With this backdrop, this paper makes an attempt to ascertain the role and importance of IM practices and performance of SMEs in the machine tools industry of Bangalore, India. The relationship between inventory management practices and inventory cost are probed based on primary data gathered from 91 SMEs. The paper brings out that formal IM practices have a positive impact on the inventory performance of SMEs.

A study of the deposition of aluminium oxide films by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition from the complex aluminium acetylacetonate, in the absence of an oxidant gas, has been carried out. Depositions on to Si(100), stainless steel, and TiN-coated cemented carbide are found to be smooth, shiny, and blackish. SIMS, XPS and TEM analyses reveal that films deposited at temperatures as low as 600 degreesC contain small crystallites Of kappa-Al2O3, embedded in an amorphous matrix rich in graphitic carbon. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveal a surface morphology made up of spherulites that suggests that film growth might involve a melting process. A nucleation and growth mechanism, involving the congruent melting clusters of precursor molecules on the hot substrate surface, is therefore invoked to explain these observations. An effort has been made experimentally to verify this proposed mechanism. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

As the beneficial effects of curcumin have often been reported to be limited to its small concentrations, we have undertaken a study to find the aggregation properties of curcumin in water by varying the number of monomers. Our molecular dynamics simulation results show that the equilibrated structure is always an aggregated state with remarkable structural rearrangements as we vary the number of curcumin monomers from 4 to 16 monomers. We find that the curcumin monomers form clusters in a very definite pattern where they tend to aggregate both in parallel and anti-parallel orientation of the phenyl rings, often seen in the formation of beta-sheet in proteins. A considerable enhancement in the population of parallel alignments is observed with increasing the system size from 12 to 16 curcumin monomers. Due to the prevalence of such parallel alignment for large system size, a more closely packed cluster is formed with maximum number of hydrophobic contacts. We also follow the pathway of cluster growth, in particular the transition from the initial segregated to the final aggregated state. We find the existence of a metastable structural intermediate involving a number of intermediate-sized clusters dispersed in the solution. We have constructed a free energy landscape of aggregation where the metatsable state has been identified. The course of aggregation bears similarity to nucleation and growth in highly metastable state. The final aggregated form remains stable with the total exclusion of water from its sequestered hydrophobic core. We also investigate water structure near the cluster surface along with their orientation. We find that water molecules form a distorted tetrahedral geometry in the 1st solvation layer of the cluster, interacting rather strongly with the hydrophilic groups at the surface of the curcumin. The dynamics of such quasi-bound water molecules near the surface of curcumin cluster is considerably slower than the bulk signifying a restricted motion as often found in protein hydration layer. This paper probes two research questions by ascertaining the factors which distinguish (i) innovative SMEs from those which are not, and (ii) SMEs which experienced a higher sales growth from those which experienced a lower sales growth, with reference to 197 engineering industry SMEs in Bangalore city. The differentiating factors between innovative and non-innovative SMEs brought out that SMEs must have ``own resources and capabilities'' in the form of internal strength and definite internal strategy if they have to innovate successfully. Younger and smaller firms which are ``entrepreneurial'' in nature and which are innovative contributed to higher sales growth of SMEs compared to older and larger firms which are ``salary-substitute firms'' in nature and which are not innovative. Modeling and analysis of wave propagation in elastic solids undergoing damage and growth process are reported in this paper. Two types of diagnostic problems, (1) the propagation of waves in the presence of a slow growth process and (2) the propagation of waves in the presence of a fast growth process, are considered. The proposed model employs a slow and a fast time scale and a homogenization technique in the wavelength scale. A detailed analysis of wave dispersion is carried out. A spectral analysis reveals certain low-frequency bands, where the interaction between the wave and the growth process produces acoustic metamaterial-like behavior. Various practical issues in designing an efficient method of acousto-ultrasonic wave based diagnostics of the growth process are discussed. Diagnostics of isotropic damage in a ductile or quasi-brittle solid by using a micro-second pulsating signal is considered for computer simulations, which is to illustrate the practical application of the proposed modeling and analysis. The simulated results explain how an estimate of signal spreading can be effectively employed to detect the presence of a steady-state damage or the saturation of a process.

The confusion over the growth rate of the Nb3Sn superconductor compound following the bronze technique is addressed. Furthermore, a possible explanation for the corrugated structure of the product phase in the multifilamentary structure is discussed. Kirkendall marker experiments are conducted to study the relative mobilities of the species, which also explains the reason for finding pores in the product phase layer. The movement of the markers after interdiffusion reflects that Sn is the faster diffusing species. Furthermore, different concentrations of Sn in the bronze alloy are considered to study the effect of Sn content on the growth rate. Based on the parabolic growth constant at different temperatures, the activation energy for the growth is determined.

Cinnamate is the product of phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL). This compound, a precursor of phenolics in plants, has been shown to be phytotoxic. Cinnamate inhibits PAL activity in cucumber seedlings. DL-phenylalanine has the same effect on the enzyme but does not affect growth. Actinomycin D and cycloheximide are phytotoxic and inhibit PAL. Production of a double-peg has been noticed in the seedlings, grown in the presence of actinomycin D. Light stimulates PAL activity in the seedling.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of barium zirconate, BaZrO3, (BZ) nanotubes fabricated by the modified sol-gel method within the nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. The morphology, structure, and composition of as prepared nanotubes were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction ( SAED), high resolution TEM (HRTEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The results of XRD and SAED indicated that postannealed (at 650 degrees C for 1 h) BZ nanotubes (BZNTs) exhibited a polycrystalline cubic perovskite crystal structure. SEM and TEM analysis revealed that BZNTs possessed a uniform length and diameter (similar to 200 nm) and the thickness of the wall of the BZNTs was about 20 nm. Y-junctions, multiple branching and typical T-junctions were also observed in some BZNTs. EDX analysis demonstrated that stoichiometric BaZrO3 was formed. HRTEM image confirmed that the obtained BZNTs were composed of nanoparticles in the range of 5-10 nm. The possible formation mechanism of BZNTs was discussed.

In the present work, solidification of a hyper-eutectic ammonium chloride solution in a bottom-cooled cavity (i.e. with stable thermal gradient) is numerically studied. A Rayleigh number based criterion is developed, which determines the conditions favorable for freckles formation. This criterion, when expressed in terms of physical properties and process parameters, yields the condition for plume formation as a function of concentration, liquid fraction, permeability, growth rate of a mushy layer and thermophysical properties. Subsequently, numerical simulations are performed for cases with initial and boundary conditions favoring freckle formation. The effects of parameters, such as cooling rate and initial concentration, on the formation and growth of freckles are investigated. It was found that a high cooling rate produced larger and more defined channels which are retained for a longer durations. Similarly, a lower initial concentration of solute resulted in fewer but more pronounced channels. The number and size of channels are also found to be related to the mushy zone thickness. The trends predicted with regard to the variation of number of channels with time under different process conditions are in accordance with the experimental observations reported in the literature.

The nucleation and growth mechanisms during high temperature oxidation of liquid Al-3% Mg and Al-3% Mg-3% Si alloys were studied with the aim of enhancing our understanding of a new composite fabrication process. The typical oxidation sequence consists of an initial event of rapid but brief oxidation, followed by an incubation period of limited oxide growth after which bulk Al2O3/Al composite forms. A duplex oxide layer, MgO (upper) and MgAl2O4 (lower), forms on the alloy surface during initial oxidation and incubation. The spinel layer remains next to the liquid alloy during bulk oxide growth and is the eventual repository for most of the magnesium in the original alloy. Metal microchannels developed during incubation continuously supply alloy through the composite to the reaction interface. During the growth process, a layered structure exists at the upper extremity of the composite, consisting of MgO at the top surface, MgAl2O4 (probably discontinuous), Al alloy, and finally the bulk Al2O3 composite containing microchannels of the alloy. The bulk oxide growth mechanism appears to involve continuous formation and dissolution of the Mg-rich oxides at the surface, diffusion of oxygen through the underlying liquid metal, and epitaxial growth of Al2O3 on the existing composite body. The roles of Mg and Si in the composite growth process are discussed.

Interdiffusion study of the Co-Nb system is conducted to determine the diffusion parameters in different phases. The integrated diffusion coefficients at different temperatures are calculated for the Nb2Co7 phase, which has very narrow composition range. The interdiffusion coefficients at different compositions in the NbCo2 Laves phase are determined. The interdiffusion coefficient in this phase decreases with increasing Nb content to the stoichiometric composition. Further, the average interdiffusion coefficient in the N6Co7-mu phase is determined. The activation energies for diffusion in different phases are calculated, providing valuable information regarding the diffusion mechanism. In addition, an experiment using Kirkendall markers is conducted to calculate the relative mobilities of the species.

The tracer diffusion coefficients of the elements as well as the integrated interdiffusion coefficients are determined for the Cu3Sn and Cu6Sn5 intermetallic compounds using incremental diffusion couples and Kirkendall marker shift measurements. The activation energies are determined for the former between 498 K and 623 K (225 A degrees C and 350 A degrees C) and for the latter between 423 K and 473 K (150 A degrees C and 200 A degrees C). Sn is found to be a slightly faster diffuser in Cu6Sn5, and Cu is found to be the faster diffuser in Cu3Sn. The results from the incremental couples are used to predict the behavior of a Cu/Sn couple where simultaneous growth of both intermetallics occurs. The waviness at the Cu3Sn/Cu6Sn5 interface and possible reasons for not finding Kirkendall markers in both intermetallics in the Cu/Sn couple are discussed.
