Molecular weight and polydispersity are two structural features of hyperbranched polymers that are difficult to control because of the statistical nature of the step-growth polycondensation of AB(2) type monomers; the statistical growth also causes the polydispersity index to increase with percent conversion (or molecular weight). We demonstrate that using controlled amounts of a specifically designed B(3) core, containing B-type functionality that are more reactive than those present in the AB(2) monomer, both the molecular weight and the polydispersity can be readily controlled; the PDI was shown to improve with increasing mole-fraction of the B(3) core while the polymer molecular weight showed an expected decrease. Incorporation of a ``clickable'' propargyl group in the B(3) core unit permitted the generation of a core-functionalizable hyperbranched polymer. Importantly, this clickable core, in combination with a recently developed AB(2) monomer, wherein the B-type groups are allyl ethers and A is an hydroxyl group, led to the generation of a hyperbranched polymer carrying orthogonally functionalizable core and peripheral groups, via a single-step melt polycondensation. Selective functionalization of the core and periphery using two different types of chromophores was achieved, and the occurrence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between the donor and acceptor chromophores was demonstrated.

A series expansion for Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions phi(lambda) is obtained for all lambda is an element of alpha(C)*. As a consequence, estimates for phi(lambda) away from the walls of a Weyl chamber are established. We also characterize the bounded hypergeometric functions and thus prove an analogue of the celebrated theorem of Helgason and Johnson on the bounded spherical functions on a Riemannian symmetric space of the noncompact type. The L-P-theory for the hypergeometric Fourier transform is developed for 0 < p < 2. In particular, an inversion formula is proved when 1 <= p < 2. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Hyoscyamine 60-hydroxylase (H6H: EC 1.14.11.11), a key enzyme at the terminal step of tropane alkaloid biosynthesis, converts hyoscyamine to scopolamine. The accumulation of scopolamine in different organs, in particular the aerial parts for storage, is subject to the expression of hyoscyamine 6-phydroxylase as well as its transport from the site of synthesis. To understand the molecular basis of this regulation, we have analyzed, in parallel, the relative levels of hyoscyamine and scopolamine, and the accumulation of H6H (both protein and transcript) in leaves, stems and roots of D. metel. The root, stem and leaf tissues all contain about 0.51-0.65 mg g(-1) dry weight of scopolamine. Hyoscyamine content was extremely low in leaf and stem tissues and was about 0.28 mg g(-1) dry weight in the root tissue. H6H protein and its transcript were found only in roots but not in the aerial parts viz. stems and leaves. The immunolocalization studies performed on leaf, stem, root as well as hairy root tissues showed that H6H was present only in the pericycle cells of young lateral and hairy roots. These studies suggest that the conversion of hyoscyamine to scopolamine takes place in the root pericycle cells, and the alkaloid biosynthesized in the roots gets translocated to the aerial parts in D. metel. The nonlinear equations for coupled elastic flapping-twisting motion of a dragonfly in- spired smart flapping wing are used for a flapping wing actuated from the root by a PZT unimorph in the piezofan configuration. Excitation by the piezoelectric harmonic force generates only the flap bending motion, which in turn, induces the elastic twist motion due to interaction between flexural and torsional vibrations modes. An unsteady aerodynamic model is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. Numerical simulations are performed using a wing whose size is the same as the dragonfly Sympetrum Frequens wing. It is found that the value of average lift reaches to its maximum when the smart flapping wing is excited at a frequency closer to the natural frequency in torsion. Moreover, consideration of the elastic twisting of flapping wing leads to an increase in the lift force. It is also found that the flapping wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small pay- load. Therefore, the piezoelectrically actuated smart flapping wing based on the geometry of Sympetrum Frequens wing and undergoing flapping-twisting motions may be considered as a potential candidate for use in MAV applications.

The relative induction of FSH and LH receptors in the granulosa cells of immature rat ovary by pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) has been studied. A single injection of PMSG (15 IU) brought about a 3- and 12-fold increase in FSH and LH receptor concentration, respectively, in the granulosa cells. Maximal concentration was reached by 72 h but the receptor levels showed a sharp decline during the next 24–48 h. The kinetic properties of the newly formed FSH receptors were indistinguishable from the pre-existing ones. The induced FSH receptors were functional as demonstrated by an increase in the in vitro responsiveness of the cells to exogenous FSH in terms of progesterone production. Treatment of immature rats with cyanoketone, an inhibitor of Δ5,3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, prior to PMSG injection effectively reduced the PMSG-stimulated increase in the serum estradiol, uterine weight and LH receptors but had no effect on the FSH receptor induction. The ability of PMSG to induce gonadotropin receptors can be arrested at any given time by injecting its antibody, thereby suggesting a continuous need for the hormonal inducer. Estrogen in the absence of the primary inducer was unable to maintain the induced LH and FSH receptor concentration. Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis using indomethacin also had no effect on either the induction or degradation of gonadotropin receptors. Administration of PMSG antiserum, 48 h after PMSG injection, brought about a rapid decline in the induced receptors over the next 24 h, with a rate constant and \iota 1/2 of 0.078 h−1 and 8.9 h for FSH receptors and 0.086 h−1 and 8.0 h for the LH receptors, respectively.

The host-guest technique has been applied to the determination of the helix-coil stability constants of two naturally occurring amino acids, L-alanine and L-leucine, in a nonaqueous solvent system. Random copolymers containing L-alanine and L-leucine, respectively, as guest residues and -benzyl-L-glutamate as the host residue were synthesized. The polymers were fractionated and characterized for their amino acid content, molecular weight, and helix-coil transition behavior in a dichloroacetic acid (DCA)-1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) mixture. Two types of helix-coil transitions were carried out on the copolymers: solvent-induced transitions in DCA-DCE mixtures at 25°C and thermally induced transitions in a 82:18 (wt %) DCA-DCE mixture. The thermally induced transitions were analyzed by statistical mechanical methods to determine the Zimm-Bragg parameters, and s, of the guest residues. The experimental data indicate that, in the nonaqueous solvent, the L-alanine residue stabilizes the -helical conformation more than the L-leucine residue does. This is in contrast to their behavior in aqueous solution, where the reverse is true. The implications of this finding for the analysis of helical structures in globular proteins are discussed.

The growth patterns of Mycobacterium smegmatis SN2 in a minimal medium and in nutrient broth have been compared. The growth was monitored by absorbancy (Klett readings), colony forming units, wet weight and content of DNA, RNA and protein. During the early part of the growth cycle, the bacteria had higher wet weight and macromolecular content in nutrient broth than in minimal media. During the latter half of the growth cycle however, biosynthesis stopped much earlier in nutrient broth and the bacteria had a much lower content of macromolecules than in the minimal medium. In both the media, a general pattern of completing biosynthesis rapidly in the initial phase and a certain amount of cell division at a later time involving the distribution of preformed macromolecules was seen. The possible adaptive significance of this observation has been discussed.

Estrogen (E) induction of riboflavin carrier protein (RCP) in the chicken oviduct and liver was investigated to compare and contrast the kinetics, hormonal specificity and modulation of its elaboration in the 2 steroid-responsive tissues. During primary stimulation, continued daily E administration to immature female chicks elicited, after an initial lag, rapid growth and RCP content of the oviduct; neither progesterone (P) nor testosterone (T) could substitute for E in this respect. Furthermore, P given along with E curtailed tissue growth and its RCP content, whereas E + T had a synergistic effect on tissue growth only. During secondary stimulation, E administration steeply enhanced both tissue weight and RCP content without any lag. Interestingly, P (but not T) could substitute for E in augmenting magnum RCP concentration to a comparable extent while a concomitant effect on tissue growth was less marked. In contrast, hepatic induction of RCP was absolutely E-specific during both primary and secondary stimulations. Secondary stimulation with either E or P of E-primed birds enhanced the rates of RCP synthesis in the oviduct relative to that of total protein, whereas in the liver only E was effective in this regard. The absolute rate of E-induced RCP synthesis in both the steroid-stimulated tissues was significantly higher than that of general protein elaboration.

Transport of 1-14C-IAA in successive stem segments of Cuscuta was strictly basipetal in growing and non growing regions of the vine with a flux velocity of 10-12 mm/h (intercept method). This transport showed a distinct peaked profile, increasing from a low value at 10 mm from the apex to a maximum between 50 and 90 mm before declining to a low value again around 160 mm at which elongation growth ceased. The IAA transport profile paralleled the in vivo growth rate profile, though the latter peaked ahead of transport. A better correlation was observed between the profile of growth responsiveness of the vine to exogenous IAA application and the profile of IAA transport. Growth responsiveness was determined as the differential in growth rate of stem segments in vitro in the absence and presence of growth optimal concentration of IAA (10 μm). Retention of exogenous IAA in the stem was maximal where transport decreased, and this coincided with the region of maximal conjugation of applied 1-14C-IAA to aspartic acid to form indoleacetylaspartate (IAAsp). In addition to aspartate, IAA was conjugated to a small extent to an unidentified compound. IAA destruction by decarboxylation was greatest where transport was low, particularly in the nongrowing region, where lignification occurred (i.e., beyond 180 mm). At concentrations up to 20 μM, a pulse of 1-14C-IAA chased by "cold" IAA moved as a peak (with a peak displacement velocity of 12-18 mm/h) in the "growth" region of the vine, but became diffusionlike where growth either fell off steeply or ceased. At a higher (50 μM) IAA concentration, though uptake was not saturated, transport in the growth region became diffusionlike, indicating saturation of the system. Reduced IAA flux in the region where growth responsiveness to IAA declined coincided with the region of increased IAA conjugation. However, it cannot be concluded whether increased IAA conjugation was the cause or effect of decreased IAA flux. Application of benzyladenine to the vines in vivo, a treatment that elicited haustoria formation by 72 h, resulted in the inhibition of both IAA transport and elongation growth rate in the subapical region. In vitro treatment of vine segments with BA similarly increased IAA retention and decreased IAA transport. IAA loss was suppressed, and conjugation to IAAsp was enhanced. © 1989 Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

For p x n complex orthogonal designs in k variables, where p is the number of channels uses and n is the number of transmit antennas, the maximal rate L of the design is asymptotically half as n increases. But, for such maximal rate codes, the decoding delay p increases exponentially. To control the delay, if we put the restriction that p = n, i.e., consider only the square designs, then, the rate decreases exponentially as n increases. This necessitates the study of the maximal rate of the designs with restrictions of the form p = n+1, p = n+2, p = n+3 etc. In this paper, we study the maximal rate of complex orthogonal designs with the restrictions p = n+1 and p = n+2. We derive upper and lower bounds for the maximal rate for p = n+1 and p = n+2. Also for the case of p = n+1, we show that if the orthogonal design admit only the variables, their negatives and multiples of these by root-1 and zeros as the entries of the matrix (other complex linear combinations are not allowed), then the maximal rate always equals the lower bound.

In eubacteria, ribosome recycling factor (RRF) and elongation factor G (EFG) function together to dissociate posttermination ribosomal complexes. Earlier studies, using heterologous factors from Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Escherichia coli revealed that specific interactions between RRF and EFG are crucial for their function in ribosome recycling. Here, we used translation factors from E.coli,Mycobacterium smegmatis and M. tuberculosis, and polysomes from E. coli and M. smegmatis, and employed in vivo and in vitro experiments to further understand the role of EFG in ribosome recycling. We show thatE. coli EFG (EcoEFG) recycles E. coli ribosomes with E. coli REF (EcoRRF), but not with mycobacterial RRFs. Also, EcoEFG fails to recycle M. smegmatis ribosomes with either EcoRRF or mycobacterial RRFs. On the other hand, mycobacterial EFGs recycle both E. coli and M. smegmatis ribosomes with either of the RRFs. These observations suggest that EFG establishes distinct interactions with REF and the ribosome to carry out ribosome recycling. Furthermore, the EFG chimeras generated by swapping domains betweenmycobacterial EFGs and EcoEFG suggest that while the residues needed to specify the EFG interaction with REF arelocated in domains IV and V. those required to specify its interaction with the ribosome are located throughout the molecule. Experiments are performed to determine the mass and stiffness variations along the wing of the blowfly Calliphora. The results are obtained for a pairs of wings of 10 male flies and fresh wings are used. The wing is divided into nine locations along the span and seven locations along the chord based on venation patterns. The length and mass of the sections is measured and the mass per unit length is calculated. The bending stiffness measurements are taken at three locations, basal (near root), medial and distal (near tip) of the fly wing. Torsional stiffness measurements are also made and the elastic axis of the wing is approximately located. The experimental data is then used for structural modeling of the wing as a stepped cantilever beam with nine spanwise sections of varying mass per unit lengths, flexural rigidity (EI) and torsional rigidity (GJ) values. Inertial values of nine sections are found to approximately vary according to an exponentially decreasing law over the nine sections from root to tip and it is used to calculate an approximate value of Young's modulus of the wing biomaterial. Shear modulus is obtained assuming the wing biomaterial to be isotropic. Natural frequencies, both in bending and torsion, are obtained by solving the homogeneous part of the respective governing differential equations using the finite element method. The results provide a complete analysis of Calliphora wing structure and also provide guidelines for the biomimetic structural design of insect-scale flapping wings.

An energy method is used in order to derive the non-linear equations of motion of a smart flapping wing. Flapping wing is actuated from the root by a PZT unimorph in the piezofan configuration. Dynamic characteristics of the wing, having the same size as dragonfly Aeshna Multicolor, are analyzed using numerical simulations. It is shown that flapping angle variations of the smart flapping wing are similar to the actual dragonfly wing for a specific feasible voltage. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on modified strip theory is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the smart wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small payload. It is therefore a potential candidate for flapping wing of micro air vehicles.

To understand the effect of molecular weight and branching on the heats of vaporization (AH,) and their flow behavior, AH, and viscosity (7) were measured at different temperatures in the high molecular weight ester series: linear flexible di-n-alkyl sebacates and compact branched triglycerides with molecular weight ranging from 300 to 900. AHv" values (AHv corrected to 298 K) have been obtained with experimental AH, and also computed according to the group additivity method; a smaller-CH,- group value of 3.8 kJ mol-' compared to the normal value of 5.0 kJ mol-' is found to give good agreement with the experimental data (within 2-5% error). Both ester series have the same AH," irrespective of their molecular features, namely, shape, flexibility, and polarity, suggesting the coiling of the molecules during vaporization. The segmental motion of these ester series during their flow and its dependence on their molecular features unlike AH,' are demonstrated by the correlation of the enthalpy of activation for viscous flow (AH*) and the ratio AE,/AH* = n (AE, is the energy of vaporization) with molecular weight.
