MeNCS undergoes insertion into the copper(I)-aryloxide bond to form [N-methylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato]-copper(I) complexes. This insertion occurs in the absence of ancillary ligands unlike the analogous insertion of PhNCS. The reaction with 4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of hexakis[[N-methylimino(4-methylphenoxy) methanethiolato]copper(I)] (1), which has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data for 1: hexagonal , a = 10.088(2) Angstrom, b = 11.302(1) Angstrom, c = 17.990(2) Angstrom, alpha = 94.06(1)degrees, beta = 95.22(2)degrees, gamma = 103.94(1)degrees, Z = 2, V = 1974.4(7) Angstrom(3), R = 0.0361. In the presence of of PPh(3), the insertion reaction becomes reversible. This allows the exchange of the heterocumulene MeNCS or the aryloxy group in these molecules with another heterocumulene or a phenol, respectively, when catalytic amounts of PPh(3) are added. Oligomers with exchanged heterocumulmes and phenols could be characterized by independent synthesis.

The extension of Hehl's Poincaré gauge theory to more general groups that include space-time diffeomorphisms is worked out for two particular examples, one corresponding to the action of the conformal group on Minkowski space, and the other to the action of the de Sitter group on de Sitter space, and the effect of these groups on physical fields.

Any (N+M)-parameter Lie group G with an N-parameter subgroup H can be realized as a global group of diffeomorphisms on an M-dimensional base space B, with representations in terms of transformation laws of fields on B belonging to linear representations of H. The gauged generalization of the global diffeomorphisms consists of general diffeomorphisms (or coordinate transformations) on a base space together with a local action of H on the fields. The particular applications of the scheme to space-time symmetries is discussed in terms of Lagrangians, field equations, currents, and source identities. A new two-dimensional 3d-4f mixed-metal mixed dicarboxylate (homocyclic and heterocyclic) of the formula [Gd2(H2O)2Ni(H2O)2(1,2-bdc)2(2,5-pydc)2] 3 8H2O (1; 1,2-H2bdc = 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid and 2,5-H2pydc = 2,5- pyridinedicarboxylic acid) has been prepared by employing the hydrothermal method. The structure has infinite onedimensional-Gd-O-Gd- chains formed by the edge-shared GdO9 polyhedral units, resulting exclusively from the connectivity between the Gd3+ ions and the 1,2-bdc units. The chains are connected by the [Ni(H2O)2(2,5-pydc)2]2- metalloligand, forming the two-dimensional layer arrangements. The stacking of the layers creates hydrophilic and hydrophobic spaces in the interlamellar region. A one-dimensional water ladder structure, formed by the extraframework water molecules, occupies the hydrophilic region while the benzene ring of 1,2-bdc occupies the hydrophobic region. To the best of our knowledge, the present compound represents the first example of a 3d-4f mixed-metal carboxylate in which two different aromatic dicarboxylate anions act as the linkers. The stabilization energies of the water clusters have been evaluated using density functional theory calculations. The water molecules in 1 are fully reversible accompanied by a change in color (greenish blue to brown) and coordination around Ni2+ ions (octahedral to distorted tetrahedral).

Collections of non-Brownian particles suspended in a viscous fluid and subjected to oscillatory shear at very low Reynolds number have recently been shown to exhibit a remarkable dynamical phase transition separating reversible from irreversible behavior as the strain amplitude or volume fraction are increased. We present a simple model for this phenomenon, based on which we argue that this transition lies in the universality class of the conserved directed percolation models. This leads to predictions for the scaling behavior of a large number of experimental observables. Non-Brownian suspensions under oscillatory shear may thus constitute the first experimental realization of an inactive-active phase transition which is not in the universality class of conventional directed percolation.

Poly(dG-Me5dC) is known to exhibit a B→Z transition in the presence of very high concentrations of NaCl. For the first time, we report the presence of a Z-structure in sodium concentrations as low as 0.5 mM. A novel Z B Z transition is observed as the salt concentration is gradually increased. The role of water structure in B to Z transitions is discussed.

The crystalline mung bean nucleotide pyrophosphatase was inhibited nonlinearly by AMP, one of the products of the reaction. The partially inactive enzyme was specifically reactivated by ADP, and V at maximal activation was the same as that of the native enzyme. ATP was a linear, noncompetitive inhibitor. The kinetic evidence suggested that ADP and ATP might not be reacting at the same site as AMP. The electrophoretic mobility of the enzyme was increased by AMP, whereas ADP and ATP were without effect. The enzyme was denatured on treatment with urea or guanidine hydrochloride. The renatured and the native enzyme had the same pH (9.4) and temperature (49 °C) optimum. The Km (0.2 mImage ) and V (3.2) of the native enzyme increased on renaturation to 1.8 mImage and 8.0, respectively. In addition, renaturation resulted in desensitization of the enzyme to inhibition by low concentrations of AMP. Renaturation did not affect the reactivation of the apoenzyme by Zn2+.

The effect of aqueous pyridine on a hapten—antihapten system was investigated by the quantitative precipitin reaction and by the membrane filtration method. It was found that dilute solutions of pyridine inhibited the reaction between isopentenyladenosine and its antiserum. Other solvents examined were less effective. The effect of pyridine was reversible at concentrations where complete inhibition occurred, thus indicating its use for the dissociation of antigen—antibody complexes. The inhibitory effect of pyridine was exploited in a single-step purification method for anti—isopentenyladenosine and antideoxy-adenylate antibodies. In addition, generally applicable methods for linking nucleosides and nucleotides to aminoethyl-Sepharose are described.

Several alkylidene malononitriles (1b,1d,1e,2b and4b) and alkylidene cyanoacetates (1a,2a and4a) studied exhibit a long wavelength UV absorption band around 355 nm which shows a hyperchromic effect in the presence of ethanolic alkali. This band has been assigned to the ketenimine tautomer (5). Addition of water to1b,1e and2b gives the corresponding pyridine diols (7a,7b and8a) respectively. Similarly, addition of ethanol to1e and2b gave the corresponding ethoxypyridine derivatives (7c and8b). Mechanism of formation of these compounds is discussed. Structures, as well as mechanism of formation of1c,7c and10 obtained from1b,1e and2b respectively on standing at room temperature are also discussed.

We report the formation of dynamic, reversible cross-linked dendritic megamers and their dissociation to monomeric dendrimers, through a thiol-disulfide interchange reaction. For this study, poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers up to three-generations presenting thiol functionalities, were prepared. The series from zero to three generations of dendrimers were installed with 3, 6, 12, and 24 thiol functionalities at their peripheries. Upon synthesis, cross-linking of the dendrimer was accomplished through disulfide bond formation. The cross-linking of dendrimers was monitored through optical density changes at 420 nm. Dense cross-linking led to visible precipitation of dendritic megamers and the morphologies of the megamers were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The disulfide cross-links between megamer monomers could be dissociated readily upon reduction of disulfide bond by dithiothreitol reagent. Preliminary studies show that dendritic megamers encapsulate C-60 and the efficiency of encapsulation increased with increasing generation of dendritic megamer.
