A FSH inhibitor from the urine of bonnet monkeys has been isolated and some of its physicochemical, biological, and immunochemical properties have been described. One of the likely sources of the inhibitor in the monkey seems to be the kidney. This inhibitor has been used in delineating the role of FSH in follicular development in the ovary of the female rat. A method has been described for isolating human LH inhibitor in a fairly pure state.

As is well known, when monochromatic light scattered by a liquid is examined under high resolution it exhibits a fine structure: an undisplaced central line and two lines on either side with wavelengths slightly different from that of the incident light. The appearance of the displaced components was first predicted by Brillouin1. On the basis of his theory, the observed displacements of frequency are regarded as a Doppler effect arising from the reflexion of the light wave by the progressive sound waves of thermal origin in the scattering medium. The frequency shift of the so-called Brillouin components is given by the formula where nu and c are the velocities of sound and light in the medium and theta is the angle of scattering. That the effect contemplated by Brillouin does arise in liquids and crystals is now a well-established experimental fact.

A colorimetric assay for the quantitative determination of catecholic compounds was developed. The method was based on the observation that a red color was formed when nitrite was added to a solution containing pyrocatechol and sodium tungstate. Aromatic amines interfere with the reaction but this could be overcome by the addition of formaldehyde. When interfering substances are present along with pyrocatechol, it can be readily separated by paper chromatography and estimated after elution from the filter paper.

Sodium nitrate is isostructural with calcite and crystallizes in the space group DQd. It is one of these substances whose physical properties have been widely investigated. However, a perusal of literature shows that the agreement between the elastic constants obtained by various investigators is not good.

Proton and fluorine NMR were investigated in the temperature range 90–425 °K in the hexahydrated fluorosilicates of Zn, Cu, Mn, Co, and Ni and in the tetrahydrated CuSiF6 to obtain information about the internal motions in these solids. Second moment transitions were observed at widely different temperatures for the different substances, and these are ascribed to the onset of reorientation of the M(H2O) and SiF octahedra. The correlation frequency and the potential barrier hindering the motion were calculated in all the cases. Apart from the narrowing taking place at higher temperatures, the Co salt showed a change in the line structure at 248 °K, where a phase transition was reported from magnetic susceptibility measurements. Studies on the single crystals of ZnSiF6 • 6H2O and NiSiF6 • 6H2O showed that there are three nonequivalent p-p vectors, and after the transition they all become equivalent, with the M(H2O) octahedron reorienting about the fourfold axes. ©1973 The American Institute of Physics

The quaternary system Sb1bTe1bBi1bSe with small amounts of suitable dopants is of interest for the manufacture of thermoelectric modules which exhibit the Peltier and Seebeck effects. This property could be useful in the production of energy from the thermoelectric effect. Other substances are bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and Sb1bTe1bBi and compounds such as ZnIn2Se4. In the present paper the application of computer programs such as MIGAP of Kaufman is used to indicate the stability of the ternary limits of Sb1bTe1bBi within the temperature ranges of interest, namely 273 K to 300 K.

This article examines, through a molecular perspective, the 'ozone-friendly' refrigerants R-134a and R-123 vis-Ã -vis R-12 and R-11, which are targeted to be phased out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, Final Act (1987). It appears that the molecular weight, size parameter, and dipole moment, of R-134a and R-123, may induce a pronounced effect on the chemical equilibrium of ice particles in the polar stratospheric clouds and subsequently influence the photochemical reactions therein. Non-polar, high-molecular-weight perfluoropropane (R-218), could be a better substitute for R-12, while R-134, which is a non-polar HFC of the ethane family, could also be a candidate although its molecular weight is lower than that of R-12. The search for a good substitute for R-11, however, must continue.

Grewia tiliaefolia is widely used in traditional Indian medicines to cure jaundice, biliousness, dysentery and the diseases of blood. Bioassay-guided fractionation of methanolic extract of the G. tiliaefolia bark has resulted in the isolation of D-erythro-2-hexenoic acid gamma-lactone (EHGL) and gulonic acid gamma-lactone (GAGL). Hepatoprotective activity of the methanolic extract and the isolated constituents were evaluated against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The treatment with methanolic extract, EHGL and GAGL at oral doses of 100, 150 and 60 mg/kg respectively with concomitant CCl4 intraperitoneal injection (I ml/kg) significantly reduced the elevated plasma levels of aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase and the incidence of liver necrosis compared with the CCl4-injected group without affecting the concentrations of serum bilirubin and hepatic markers. EHGL and GAGL significantly inhibited the elevated levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and glutathione in liver homogenates. Histology of the liver tissues of the extract and isolated constituents treated groups showed the presence of normal hepatic cords, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration as similar to the normal control. The results revealed that the hepatoprotective activity of EHGL is significant as similar to the standard drug silymarin. To clarify the influence of the extract and isolated constituents on the protection of oxidative-hepatic damage, we examined in vitro antioxidant properties of the test compounds. The extract and the constituents showed significant free radical scavenging activity. These results suggest that the extract as well as the constituents could protect the hepatocytes from CCl4-induced liver damage perhaps, by their anti-oxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl4, (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: Glutathionyl haemoglobin (GS-Hb) belonging to the class of glutathionylated proteins has been investigated as a possible marker of oxidative stress in different chronic diseases. The purpose of this study was to examine whether glutathionyl haemoglobin can serve as an oxidative stress marker in non-diabetic chronic renal failure patients on different renal replacement therapies (RRT) through its quantitation, and characterization of the specific binding site of glutathione in haemoglobin molecule by mass spectrometric analysis. Design and methods: The study group consisted of non-diabetic chronic renal failure patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT): hemodialysis (HD), continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and renal allograft transplant (Txp) patients. Haemoglobin samples of these subjects were analyzed by liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for GS-Hb quantitation. Characterization of GS-Hb was done by tandem mass spectrometry. Levels of erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (as thiobarbituric acid reacting substances) were measured spectrophotometrically, while glycated baernoglobin (HbA1c) was measured by HPLC. Results: GS-Hb levels were markedly elevated in the dialysis group and marginally in the transplant group as compared to the controls. GS-Hb levels correlated positively with lipid peroxidation and negatively with the erythrocyte glutathione levels in RRT groups indicating enhanced oxidative stress. De novo sequencing of the chymotryptic fragment of GS-Hb established that glutathione is attached to Cys-93 of the beta globin chain. Mass spectrometric quantitation of total glycated haemoglobin showed good agreement with HbA1c estimation by conventional HPLC method. Conclusions: Glutathionyl haemoglobin can serve as a clinical marker of oxidative stress in chronic debilitating therapies like RRT. Mass spectrometry provides a reliable analytical tool for quantitation and residue level characterization of different post-translational modifications of haemoglobin. Dansylcadaverine, a cationic fluorescent probe binds to bacterial lipopolysaccharide and lipid A, and is displaced competitively by other compounds which possess affinity toward endotoxins. The binding parameters of dansylcadaverine for lipid A were determined by Scatchard analysis to be two apparently equivalent sites with apparent dissociation constants (Kd) ranging between 16 μM to 26 μM, while that obtained for core glycolipid from Salmonella minnesota Re595 yielded a Kd of 22 μM to 28 μM with three binding sites. The Kd of polymyxin B for lipid A was computed from dansylcadaverine displacement by the method of Horovitz and Levitzki (Horovitz, A., and Levitzki, A. (1987) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 84, 6654–6658). The applicability of this method for analyzing fluorescence data was validated by comparing the Kds of melittin for lipid A obtained by direct Scatchard analysis, and by the Horovitz-Levitzki method. The displacement of dansylcadaverine from lipid A by polymyxin B was distinctly biphasic with Kds for polymyxin B-lipid A interactions corresponding to 0.4 μM and 1.5 μM, probably resulting as a consequence of lipid A being a mixture of mono- and di-phosphoryl species. This was not observed with core glycolipid, for which the Kd for polymyxin was estimated to range from 1.1 μM to 5.8 μM. The use of dansylcadaverine as a displacement probe offers a novel and convenient method of quantitating the interactions of a wide variety of substances with lipid A.
