We report a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment, which simulates the quantum transverse Ising spin system in a triangular configuration, and further demonstrate that multipartite quantum correlations can be used to distinguish between the frustrated and the nonfrustrated regimes in the ground state of this system. Adiabatic state preparation methods are used to prepare the ground states of the spin system. We employ two different multipartite quantum correlation measures to analyze the experimental ground state of the system in both the frustrated and the nonfrustrated regimes. As expected from theoretical predictions, the experimental data confirm that the nonfrustrated regime shows higher multipartite quantum correlations compared to the frustrated one.

A pure sample of nitrosyl chloride has been prepared either by reaction of phosphorus trichloride with concentrated nitric acid or by reaction of phosphorus trichloride with sodium nitrate in presence of water. The nitrosyl chloride gas has been characterized by i.r. spectral data and elemental analysis.

Silica is a prominently utilized heterogeneous metal catalyst support. Functionalization of the silica with poly(ether imine) based dendritic phosphine ligand was conducted, in order to assess the efficacy of the dendritic phosphine in reactions facilitated by a silica supported metal catalyst. The phosphinated poly(ether imine) (PETIM) dendritic ligand was bound covalently to the functionalized silica. For this purpose, the phosphinated dendritic ligand containing an amine at the focal point was synthesized initially. Complexation of the dendritic phosphine functionalized silica with Pd(COD)Cl-2 yielded Pd(II) complex, which was reduced subsequently to Pd(0), by conditioning with EtOH. The Pd metal nanoparticle thus formed was characterized by physical methods, and the spherical nanoparticles were found to have >85% size distribution between 2 nm and 4 nm. The metal nanoparticle was tested as a hydrogenation catalyst of olefins. The catalyst could be recovered and recycled more than 10 times, without a loss in the catalytic efficiency.

La0.5Li0.5TiO3 perovskite was synthesized by various wet chemical methods. By adopting low temperature methods of preparation lithium loss from the material is prevented. La0.5Li0.5TiO3 (LLTO) was formed with cubic symmetry at 1473 K. LLTO was formed at relatively lower temperature by using hydrothermal preparation method. PVA gel-decomposition route yield tetragonal LLTO on annealing the dried gel at 1473 K. By using gel-carbonate route LiTi2O4 minor phase was found to remain even after heat-treatment at 1473 K. The hydroxylation of LLTO was done in deionized water as well as in dilute acetic acid medium. By hydroxylation process incorporation of hydroxyls and leaching out of Li+ was observed from the material. The Li+ concentration of these compositions was examined by AAS. The electrical conductivities of these compositions were measured by dc and ac impedance techniques at elevated temperatures. The activation energies of electrical conduction for these compositions were estimated from the experimental results. The measured activation energy of Li+ conduction is 0.34 eV. Unhydroxylated samples exhibit only Li+ conduction, whereas, the hydroxylated LLTO show proton conductivity at 298-550 K in addition to Li+ conductivity. The effect of Zr or Ce substitution in place of Ti were attempted. La0.5Li0.5ZrO3 Perovskite was not formed; instead pyrochlore phase (La2Zr2O7) along with monoclinic ZrO2 phases was observed above 1173 K; below 1173 K cubic ZrO2 is stable. The carbohydrate residues of glycosphingolipids were implicated in many biologic processes such as cell-to-cell interactions; and as receptors for some viruses, bacterial and plant toxins, hormones, and so forth, and invariably for all the lectins (1). However, their receptor functions remained poorly defined for a long time as they form micelles even at very low concentrations in aqueous medium. In micelles, the oligosaccharide chains are not expected to have a well defined orientation suitable for recognition by macromolecular ligands. This problem was overcome by incorporating them in model membranes, namely, the liposomes. The demonstration of lectin-glycolipid interaction using liposomal model membranes was a crucial development that established glycolipids as biological receptors. Moreover, glycolipid-bearing liposomes provide a convenient system for investigating the role of glycolipid density, orientation, and exposure of their oligosaccharide chains at the membrane interface relevant to their receptor function (2–4).

A simple and efficient two-step hybrid electrochemical-thermal route was developed for the synthesis of large quantity of ZnO nanoparticles using aqueous sodium bicarbonate electrolyte and sacrificial Zn anode and cathode in an undivided cell under galvanostatic mode at room temperature. The bath concentration and current density were varied from 30 to 120 mmol and 0.05 to 1.5 A/dm(2). The electrochemically generated precursor was calcined for an hour at different range of temperature from 140 to 600 A degrees C. The calcined samples were characterized by XRD, SEM/EDX, TEM, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and UV-Vis spectral methods. Rietveld refinement of X-ray data indicates that the calcined compound exhibits hexagonal (Wurtzite) structure with space group of P63mc (No. 186). The crystallite sizes were in the range of 22-75 nm based on Debye-Scherrer equation. The TEM results reveal that the particle sizes were in the order of 30-40 nm. The blue shift was noticed in UV-Vis absorption spectra, the band gaps were found to be 5.40-5.11 eV. Scanning electron micrographs suggest that all the samples were randomly oriented granular morphology.

Hydrazinium metal chlorides, (N2H5)2MCl4·2H2O (where M = Fe, Co, Ni and Cu), have been prepared from the aqueous solutions of the respective metal chlorides and hydrazine hydrochloride (N2H4·HCl or N2H4·2HCl) and investigated by spectral and thermal analyses. The crystal structure of the iron complex has been determined by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares to an R of 0.023 and Rw of 0.031 for 1495 independent reflections. The structure shows ferrous ion in an octahedral environment bonded by two hydrazinium cations, two chloride anions and two water molecules. In the complex cation [Fe(N2H5)2(H2O)2Cl2]2+, the coordinated groups are in trans positions.

Graphenes with varying number of layers can be synthesized by using different strategies. Thus, single-layer graphene is prepared by micromechanical cleavage, reduction of single-layer graphene oxide, chemical vapor deposition and other methods. Few-layer graphenes are synthesized by conversion of nanodiamond, arc discharge of graphite and other methods. In this article, we briefly overview the various synthetic methods and the surface, magnetic and electrical properties of the produced graphenes. Few-layer graphenes exhibit ferromagnetic features along with antiferromagnetic properties, independent of the method of preparation. Aside from the data on electrical conductivity of graphenes and graphene-polymer composites, we also present the field-effect transistor characteristics of graphenes. Only single-layer reduced graphene oxide exhibits ambipolar properties. The interaction of electron donor and acceptor molecules with few-layer graphene samples is examined in detail.

Colloidal chemistry offers several tools to synthesize and manipulate nanoscopic objects. Despite the existence of a plethora of tools to design building blocks, methods for assembling these components into functional macroscopic materials are still in their infancy. This review discusses the recent progress made towards assembling rudimentary nanoscale building blocks into functional macroscopic materials.

The chain length of the surfactant and the solvent composition are two of the factors that determine whether the lamellar or the hexagonal form of mesoporous SiO2 (or ZrO2) is formed by the neutral amine route; a lamellar-hexagonal transformation occurs on removal of the amine from the former.

An overview of the synthesis of materials under microwave irradiation has been presented based on the work performed recently. A variety of reactions such as direct combination, carbothermal reduction, carbidation and nitridation have been described. Examples of microwave preparation of glasses are also presented. Great advantages of fast, clean and reduced reaction temperature of microwave methods are emphasized. The example of ZrO2-CeO2 ceramics has been used show the extraordinarily fast and effective sintering which occurs in microwave irradiation.

Immunization of proven fertile adult male monkeys (n = 3) with a recombinant FSH receptor protein preparation (oFSHR-P) (representing amino acids 1-134 of the extracellular domain of the receptor Mr similar to 15KDa) resulted in production of receptor blocking antibodies. The ability of the antibody to bind a particulate FSH receptor preparation and receptors in intact granulosa cells was markedly (by 30-80%) inhibited by FSH. Serum T levels and LH receptor function following immunization remained unchanged. The immunized monkeys showed a 50% reduction (p<0.001) in transformation of spermatogonia(2C) to primary spermatocytes (4C) as determined by flow cytometry and the 4C:2C ratio showed a correlative change (R 0.81, p<0.0007) with reduction in fertility index (sperm counts X motility score). Breeding studies indicated that monkeys became infertile between 242-368 days of immunization when the fertility index was in the range of 123+/-76 to 354+/-42 (compared to a value of 1602+/-384 on day 0). As the effects observed ate near identical to that seen following immunization with FSH it is suggestive that oFSHR-P can substitute for FSH in the development of a contraceptive vaccine.

A 100,000 x g supernatant fraction prepared from developing groundnut seeds (30-35 days after flowering) catalyzed the synthesis of fatty acids from [l-14C]acetate at a rate of 120nmoles of acetate incorporated per hr per gram fresh weight of tissue. 90% of this incorporated label was associated with fatty acids. The major fatty acids formed were stearic- (77%) and palmitic acids (14%) with 4% of oleic acid. The fatty acid synthetase activity was stable when stored at 0-4 degrees C for at least fifteen days. It is concluded from these results that acetyl-coA carboxylase and all the enzymes of fatty acid synthetase from developing groundnut seeds are soluble.
