The investigation involves preparation and photoluminescence properties of CeO2:Eu3+ (1-11 mol%) nano phosphors by eco-friendly green combustion route using Euphorbia tirucalli plant latex as fuel. The final product was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Scanning electron microcopy (SEM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The PXRD and SEM results reveals cubic fluorite phase with flaky structure. The crystallite size obtained from TEM was found to be similar to 20-25 nm, which was comparable to W-H plots and Scherrer's method. Photoluminescence (PL) emission of all the Eu3+ doped samples shows characteristic bands arising from the transitions of D-5(0) -> F-5(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) manifolds under excitation at 373 and 467 nm excitation. The D-5(0) -> F-7(2) (613 nm) transition often dominate the emission spectra, indicating that the Eu3+ cations occupy a site without inversion center. The highest PL intensity was recorded for 9 mol% Eu3+ ions with 5 ml latex. PL quenching was observed upon further increase in Eu3+ concentration. The international commission on illumination (CIE) chromaticity co-ordinates were calculated from emission spectra, the values (x, y) were very close to national television system committee (NTSC) standard values of pure red emission. The results demonstrate that the synthesized phosphor material could be very useful for display applications. Further, the phosphor material prepared by this method was found to be non toxic, environmental friendly and could be a potential alternative to economical routes. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A toxic effect of a,a-trehalose in an angiospermic plant, Cuscuta reflexa (dodder), Is described. This disaccharide and Its analogs, 2-aminotrehalose and 4-aminotbhakose, induced a raid blackening of the terminal region of the vine which is Involved in elongation growth. From the results of in vitro growth of several angkiopermic plants and determination of trehalase activity in them, it is concluded that the toxic effect of trehalose in Cucaa is because of the very low trehalas activity In the vine. As a result, trehalose accumulates In the vine and interferes with some process closely associated with growth. The growth potential of Lemma (a duckweed) in a medium containing trehalose as the carbon source was ihreversibly lost upon addition of trealosamine, an Inhibitor of trehalase activity. It is concluded that, if allowed to accumulate within the tissue, trehalose may be potentiaMly toxic or inhibitory to higher plants in generaL The presence of trhalase actvity in plants, where Its substrate has not been found to occur, is envisged to relieve the plant from the toxic effects of trehalose which it may encounter in soil or during association with fungi or insects.

The genomic sequences of several RNA plant viruses including cucumber mosaic virus, brome mosaic virus, alfalfa mosaic virus and tobacco mosaic virus have become available recently. The former two viruses are icosahedral while the latter two are bullet and rod shaped, respectively in particle morphology. The non-structural 3a proteins of cucumber mosaic virus and brome mosaic virus have an amino acid sequence homology of 35% and hence are evolutionarily related. In contrast, the coat proteins exhibit little homology, although the circular dichroism spectrum of these viruses are similar. The non-coding regions of the genome also exhibit variable but extensive homology. Comparison of the brome mosaic virus and alfalfa mosaic virus sequences reveals that they are probably related although with a much larger evolutionary distance. The polypeptide folds of the coat protein of three biologically distinct isometric plant viruses, tomato bushy stunt virus, southern bean mosaic virus and satellite tobacco necrosis virus have been shown to display a striking resemblance. All of them consist of a topologically similar 8-standard β-barrel. The implications of these studies to the understanding of the evolution of plant viruses will be discussed.

a,a-Trehalose induced a rapid blackening of the terminal 2.5-centimeter region of excised Cuscuta relexa Roxb. vine. The incorporation of radioactivity from [I'C]glucose into alkali-insoluble fraction of shoot tip was markedly inhibited by 12 hours of trehalose feeding to an excised vine. This inhibition was confied to the apical segment of the vine in which cell elongation occurred. The rate of blackening of shoot tip explants was hastened by the addition of gibberellic acid A3, which promoted elongation growth of isolated Cuscuta shoot tips. The symptom of trehalose toxicity was duplicated by 2-deoxygucose, which has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of ceD wall synthesis in yeast. The observations suggest that trehalose interferes with the synthesis of ceDl wail polysaccharides, the chief component of which was presumed to be cellulose.

The role of invariant water molecules in the activity of plant cysteine protease is ubiquitous in nature. On analysing the 11 different Protein DataBank (PDB) structures of plant thiol proteases, the two invariant water molecules W I and W2 (W220 and W222 in the template 1PPN structure) were observed to form H-bonds with the Ob atom of Asn 175. Extensive energy minimization and molecular dynamics simulation studies up to 2 ns on all the PDB and solvated structures clearly revealed the involvement of the H-bonding association of the two water molecules in fixing the orientation of the asparagine residue of the catalytic triad. From this study, it is suggested that H-bonding of the water molecule at the W1 invariant site better stabilizes the Asn residue at the active site of the catalytic triad.

Ethanol extract of whole plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina was evaluated for antiovulatory activity in adult rats. The ethanol extract at the doses 200 and 400mg/kg body weight (orally) affected the normal estrous cycle showing a significant increase in estrus and metestrus phases and decrease in diestrus and proestrus phases. The extract also significantly reduced the number of healthy follicles (Class I-Class VI) and corpora lutea and increased the number of regressing follicles (Stage IA, Stage IB, Stage IIA, and Stage IIB). The protein and glycogen content in the ovaries were significantly reduced in treated rats. The cholesterol level was significantly increased, whereas, the enzyme activities like 3b-HSD and 17b-HSD were significantly inhibited in the ovary of treated rats. Serum FSH and LH levels were significantly reduced in the treated groups were measured by RIA. In acute toxicity test, neither mortality nor change in the behavior or any other physiological activities in mice were observed in the treated groups. In chronic toxicity studies, no mortality was recorded and there were no significant differences in the body and organ weights were observed between controls and treated rats. Hematological analysis showed no significant differences in any of the parameters examined (RBC, WBC count and Hemoglobin estimation). These observations showed the antiovulatory activity of ethanol extract of whole plant of Trichosanthes cucumerina L. var. cucumerina in female albino rats.

Trehalose, an alpha,alpha-diglucoside, induced a rapid blackening and death of shoot tips of Cuscuta reflexa (dodder) cultured in vitro. The onset of toxic symptom was delayed if any of the several sugars which support the in vitro growth of Cuscuta was supplied with trehalose. The rate of trehalose uptake or its accumulation in the tissue was not affected by sugar cofeeding. The levels of total and reducing sugars declined appreciably in the trehalose-fed shoot tip explants compared to control tissue cultured in absence of a carbon source. This was not due to an increased rate of respiration of the trehalose-treated tissue. In shoot tips cultured in presence of both trehalose and sucrose, the decline in total and reducing sugars was curtailed. There was a marked fall in the level of sucrose; and invertase activity was higher in trehalose-fed shoot tips. The incorporation of label from [14C]glucose into sucrose in the shoot tip explant was reduced as early as 12 h of trehalose feeding. The results suggest that increased utilization of sucrose as well as an inhibition of its synthesis contribute to the drastic fall in the sucrose content upon trehalose feeding.

A new indole oxygenase from the leaves of Tecoma stans was isolated and purified to homogenity. The purified enzyme system catalyzes the conversion of indole to anthranilic acid. It is optimally active at pH 5.2 and 30°C. Two moles of oxygen are consumed and one mole of anthranilic acid is formed for every mole of indole oxidized. Dialysis resulted in complete loss of the activity. The inactive enzyme could be reactivated by the addition of concentrated dialysate. The enzyme is not inhibited by copperspecific chelators, non-heme iron chelators or atebrin. It is not a cuproflavoprotein, unlike the other indole oxygenases and oxidases.

For systems which can be decomposed into slow and fast subsystems, a near optimum linear state regulator consisting of two subsystem regulators can be developed. Depending upon the desired criteria, either a short term (fast controller) or a long term controller (slow controller) can be easily designed with minimum computational costs. Using this approach an example of a power system supplying a cyclic load is studied and the performance of the different controllers are compared.

Microsomal b-type hemoprotein designated, cytochrome b555 of C-Roseus seedlings was solubilized using detergents and purified by a combination of ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration to a specific content of 18.5 nmol per mg of protein. The purified cytochrome b555 was homogeneous and estimated to have an apparent molecular weight of 16500 on SDS-PAGE. The absorption spectrum of the reduced form has major peaks at 424, 525 and 555 nm. The α-band of the reduced form is asymmetric with a pronounced shoulder at 559 nm. The spectrum of the pyridine ferrohemochrome shows absorption peaks at 557, 524 and 418 nm indicating that the cytochrome has protoheme prosthetic group. The purified cytochrome is autoxidizable and does not combine with carbon monoxide, azide or cyanide. It is reducible by NADH in the presence of NADH-cytochrome b555 reductase partially purified from C-Roseus microsomes.

N6-({Delta}2-Isopentenyl) adenosine antibodies were used for the isolation of free cytokinins and cytokinin-containing tRNAs from parts of Cucumis sativus L. var. Guntur seedlings and for the estimation of cytokinins in them. Immobilized N6-({Delta}2-isopentenyl) adenosine antibodies retained tRNAs containing N6-({Delta}2-isopentenyl) adenosine and N6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl) adenosine with equal efficiencies. There were at least five cytokinins in the free form in cucumber seedlings. N6-(4-Hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl) adenosine, N6-({Delta}2-isopentenyl) adenosine, and N6-({Delta}2-isopentenyl) adenine were present at least to the extent of 80, 23, and 9 nanograms, respectively, in the cotyledons and 40, 6, and 3 nanograms, respectively, in the decotyledonated seedlings per gram of tissue. Only two cytokinins were found in the tRNAs of cucumber cotyledons, namely N6-({Delta}2-isopentenyl) adenosine and N6-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-enyl) adenosine in amounts of 12 and 318 nanograms, respectively, per gram of tissue. Immunoaffinity chromatographic analysis of radiolabeled aminoacyl tRNAs from cucumber cotyledons showed that tRNAPhe and tRNATyr contained cytokinins whereas tRNAAla did not.

Gibberellic acid (GA3) induced a marked elongation of 2.5-centimeter shoot tips of Cuscuta chinensis Lamk. cultured in vitro. In terms of the absolute amount of elongation, this growth may be the largest reported for an isolated plant system. The response to hormone was dependent on an exogenous carbohydrate supply. The hormone-stimulated growth was due to both cell division and cell elongation. The growth response progressively decreased if GA3 was given at increasingly later times after culturing, but the decreased growth response could be restored by the application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) to the apex. Explants deprived of GA3 gradually lost their ability to transport IAA basipetally, but this ability was also restored by auxin application. The observations are explained on the basis that: (a) the growth of Cuscuta shoot tip in vitro requires, at least, both an auxin and a gibberellin; and (b) in the absence of gibberellin the cultured shoot tip explants lose the ability to produce and/or transport auxin.

Rabbit antiserum specific to ovine luteinizing hormone free of contaminating antibodies to nonspecific proteins and FSH was administered to adult, intact rats at a dose of 0.1 and 0.2 ml/day for five days. LHAS had no effect on the weights of the epididymis but decreased their secretory activity to castrate level. Administration of 0.2 ml of LHAS or castration resulted in a marked and comparable reduction in the weights and secretory activity of the accessory glands. LHAS, even at a lower dose (0.1 ml/day), caused a significant reduction in the content of sialic acid in the vas deferons and Cowper's glands. These results are discussed in relation to the factors that regulate the functions of the epididymis and accessory glands.
