The brush plating technique has been employed for the first time to obtain CdSe films on Ti and conducting glass substrates. These films have been annealed in an argon atmosphere and their structural, optical and photoelectrochemical properties are discussed. The power conversion efficiency has been found to be 7.43% under an illumination of 80 mW cm-2. A peak quantum efficiency of 0.64 is obtained for an incident wavelength of 720 nm. Donor concentration of 3.42 x 10(17) cm-3, electron mobility of 3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and minority carrier diffusion length of 0.013 mum have been obtained.

In the quest for more efficient photoanodes in the photoelectrochemical oxidation processes for organic pollutant degradation and mineralisation in water treatment, we present the synthesis, characterisation and photoelectrochemical application of expanded graphite-TiO2 composite (EG-TiO2) prepared using the sol-gel method with organically modified silicate. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyser, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were employed for the characterisation of the composites. The applicability of the EG-TiO2 as photoanode material was investigated by the photoelectrochemical degradation of p-nitrophenol as a target pollutant in a 0.1 M Na2SO4 (pH 7) solution at a current density of 5 mA cm(-2). After optimising the TiO2 loading, initial p-nitrophenol concentration, pH and current density, a removal efficiency of 62% with an apparent kinetic rate constant of 10.4 x 10(-3) min(-1) was obtained for the photoelectrochemical process as compared to electrochemical oxidation and photolysis, where removal efficiencies of 6% and 24% were obtained respectively after 90 min. Furthermore, the EG-TiO2 electrode was able to withstand high current density due to its high stability. The EG-TiO2 electrode was also used to degrade 0.3 x 10(-4) M methylene blue and 0.1 x 10(-4) M Eosin Yellowish, leading to 94% and 47% removal efficiency within 120 reaction time. This confirms the suitability of the EG-TiO2 electrode to degrade other organic pollutants.

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been used extensively in water desalination plants, waste water treatment in industries, agricultural farms and drinking water production applications. The objective of this work is to impart antibacterial and antifungal activities to commercially available RO membrane used in water purification systems by incorporating biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using Rosa indica wichuriana hybrid leaf extract. The morphology and surface topography of uncoated and AgNPs-coated RO membrane were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Elemental composition of the AgNPs-coated RO membrane was analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The functional groups were identified by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Hydrophilicity of the uncoated and AgNPs-coated RO membrane was analyzed using water contact angle measurements. The thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The AgNPs incorporated RO membrane exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activities against pathogenic bacterial strains such as E. coli, S. aureus, M. luteus, K. pneumoniae, and P. aeruginosa and fungal strains such as Candida tropicalis, C. krusei, C. glabrata, and C. albicans.

The present article reports a facile method for preparing the vertically-aligned 1D arrays of a new type of type II n-n TiO2/ZnO core/shell nano-heterostructures by growing the nano-shell of ZnO on the electrochemically fabricated TiO2 nanotubes core for visible light driven photoelectrochemical applications. The strong interfacial interaction at the type II heterojunction leads to an effective interfacial charge separation and charge transport. The presence of various defects such as surface states, interface states and other defects in the nano-heterostructure enable it for improved visible light photoelectrochemical performance. The presence of such defects has also been confirmed by the UV-vis absorption, cathodoluminescence, and crystallographic studies. The TiO2/ZnO core/shell nano-heterostructures exhibit strong green luminescence due to the defect transitions. The TiO2/ZnO core/shell nano-heterostructures photo-electrode show significant enhancement of visible light absorption and it provides a photocurrent density of 0.7 mA cm(-2) at 1 V vs. Ag/AgCl, which is almost 2.7 times that of the TiO2/ZnO core/shell nano-heterostructures under dark conditions. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrate that the substantially improved photoelectrochemical and photo-switching performance of the nano-heterostructures photo-anode is because of the enhancement of interfacial charge transfer and the increase in the charge carrier density caused by the incorporation of the ZnO nano-shell on TiO2 nanotube core.

We re-assess experimental soft X-ray absorption spectra of the oxygen K-shell which we recorded operando from iron oxide during photoelectrochemical water splitting in KOH electrolyte. In particular, we refer to recently reported transitional electron hole states which originate within the charge carrier depletion layer of the iron oxide and on the iron oxide surface. For the latter we find that an intermediate oxy-peroxo species is formed on the iron oxide with increasing bias potential, which disappears upon further polarization of the electrode, concomitantly with the evolution and disappearance of the aforementioned surface state. The oxygen spectra contain also the spectroscopic signatures of the electrolyte water, the position of which changes with increasing bias potential towards lower X-ray energies, revealing the breaking and formation of hydrogen bonds in the water during the experiment. Combined with potential dependent impedance spectroscopy data we are able to sketch the molecular structure of chemical intermediates and their charge carrier dynamics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. In the quest for harnessing more power from the sun for water treatment by photoelectrochemical degradation, we prepared a novel photoanode of exfoliated graphite (EG)-ZnO nanocomposite. The nanocomposite was characterised by X-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyser, thermal gravimetric analyser, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The EG-ZnO nanocomposite was fabricated into a photoanode and applied for the photoelectrochemical degradation of 0.1 x 10(-4) M eosin yellowish dye in 0.1 M Na2SO4 under visible light irradiation. The degradation was monitored with a visible spectrophotometer. The photoelectrochemical degradation process resulted in enhanced degradation efficiency of ca. 93 % with kinetic rate of 11.0 x 10(-3) min(-1) over photolysis and electrochemical oxidation processes which exhibited lower degradation efficiencies of 35 and 40 % respectively.

A brief survey of the historical development of a photoelectrochemical solar cell is given. The principle and future of solar chargeable battery is compared with a wet and a dry type photovoltaic cell. A solar chargeable battery, with or without a membrane and with an aqueous solution or with solid-state electrolytes is discussed. A new unique type of configuration “Sharon-Schottky” junction solar cell is described which can be used either as a charger for any secondary batteries or could be used for photoelectrolysis of water. All these configurations and their relative merits are discussed. A review on the various semiconductors and types of solar chargeable batteries is made. Finally, a conclusion is drawn for future direction of research for developing an economically viable photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar cell based on either the principle of a solar charger (to charge a Ni---Cd battery or lead—acid battery) and/or solar chargeable battery with or without without a membrane. Some new innovative ideas for the preparation of materials is discussed. The entire discussion is geared towards answering a relevant question: what has gone wrong to result in the stagnation and failure in commercialization of a PEC based solar cell?

The specified range of free chlorine residual (between minimum and maximum) in water distribution systems needs to be maintained to avoid deterioration of the microbial quality of water, control taste and/or odor problems, and hinder formation of carcino-genic disinfection by-products. Multiple water quality sources for providing chlorine input are needed to maintain the chlorine residuals within a specified range throughout the distribution system. The determination of source dosage (i.e., chlorine concentrations/chlorine mass rates) at water quality sources to satisfy the above objective under dynamic conditions is a complex process. A nonlinear optimization problem is formulated to determine the chlorine dosage at the water quality sources subjected to minimum and maximum constraints on chlorine concentrations at all monitoring nodes. A genetic algorithm (GA) approach in which decision variables (chlorine dosage) are coded as binary strings is used to solve this highly nonlinear optimization problem, with nonlinearities arising due to set-point sources and non-first-order reactions. Application of the model is illustrated using three sample water distribution systems, and it indicates that the GA,is a useful tool for evaluating optimal water quality source chlorine schedules.

The preparation of ZnO nanorod films decorated with cobalt-acetate (CoAc) electrocatalyst and its activity for photoelectrolysis of water have been demonstrated. The photochemically prepared CoAc catalyst is chemically and morphologically similar to the electrochemically prepared CoAc catalyst. The on-set potential of oxygen evolution reaction is lower on CoAc-ZnO photoanode in relation to bare ZnO photoanode. There is a three to four fold increase in photooxidation current of OER due to the presence of CoAc co-catalyst on ZnO. Thus, the photochemically prepared CoAc on ZnO is an alternative and efficient co-catalyst for photoelectrochemical oxygen evolution reaction. The enhancement in photocatalytic activity of ZnO by the CoAc catalyst photochemically deposited from acetate buffer solution is significantly greater than the cobalt-phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst deposited from phosphate buffer solution. Here, we report the synthesis of TiO2/BiFeO3 nano-heterostnicture (NH) arrays by anchoring BiFeO3 (BFO) particles on on TiO2 nanotube surface and investigate their pseudocapacitive and photoelectrochemical properties considering their applications in green energy fields. The unique TiO2/BFO NHs have been demonstrated both as energy conversion and storage materials. The capacitive behavior of the NHs has been found to be significantly higher than that of the pristine TiO2 NTs, which is mainly due to the anchoring of redox active BFO nanoparticles. A specific capacitance of about 440 F g(-1) has been achieved for this NHs at a current density of 1.1 A g(-1) with similar to 80% capacity retention at a current density of 2.5 A g(-1). The NHs also exhibit high energy and power performance (energy density of 46.5 Wh kg(-1) and power density of 1.2 kW kg(-1) at a current density of 2.5 A g(-1)) with moderate cycling stability (92% capacity retention after 1200 cycles). Photoelectrochemical investigation reveals that the photocurrent density of the NHs is almost 480% higher than the corresponding dark current and it shows significantly improved photoswitching performance as compared to pure TiO2 nanotubes, which has been demonstrated based the interfacial type-II band alignment between TiO2 and BFO.
