Fabrication of 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2./3)O-3-0.35PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) nanoparticles with an average size of about 40 nm and their phase transformation behavior from pyrochlore to perovskite phase is investigated. A novel sol-gel method was used for the synthesis of air-stable and precipitate-free diol-based sol of PMN-PT which was dried and partially calcined at 450 degrees C for 1 h to decompose organics and bring down the free energy barrier for perovskite crystallization and then finally annealed in the temperature range 600 to 700 degrees C. Annealed at around 700 degrees C for 1 h, PMN-PT gel powder exhibited nanocrystalline morphology with perovskite phase as confirmed by the transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The frequency-dependent dielectric relaxation of Pb0.94Sr0.06](Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.52Ti0.48)(0.95)]O-3 ceramics, synthesized in pure perovskite phase by a solid-state reaction technique is investigated in the temperature range from 303 to 773 K by alternating-current impedance spectroscopy. Using Cole-Cole model, an analysis of the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity with frequency is performed assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests that the relaxation describes the same mechanism at various temperatures. The variation of dielectric constant with temperature is explained considering the space-charge polarization. The SEM indicates that the sample has single phase with an average grain size similar to 14.2 mu m. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. A detailed temperature dependent dielectric study at various frequencies has also been performed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The perovskite structure in Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 can be stabilized by the addition of Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 and PbTiO3.Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3 assists in lowering the sintering temperature and shifting the Curie temperature of ceramics while PbTiO3 helps to optimize the dielectric properties. The phase stability and dielectric properties of several compositions in the Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-Pb(Ni1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ternary relaxor ferroelectric system were investigated for possible capacitor applications. The effect of calcining and sintering temperature on the stability of perovskite phase in PZN rich compositions was studied extensively as a function of composition. The boundary line separating perovskite and mixed phases was determined for compositions near PZN. Several compositions can be sintered below 1050°C. The dielectric properties of compositions near the mixed phase boundary showed strong dependence on the percentage of pyrochlore phase. Compositions with a dielectric constant of 12.500 at room temperature have been identified which meet Z5T and Y5U specifications for dielectric constant and tan δ.

Direct precipitation of fine powders of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) in the complete range of solid solution, is investigated under hydrothermal conditions, starting from lead oxide and titania/zirconia mixed gels. The perovskite phase is formed in the temperature range of 165 – 340°C. Sequence of the hydrothermal reactions is studied by identifying the intermediate phases. The initial formation of PbO: TiO2 solid solution is followed by the reaction of the same with the remaining mixed gels giving rise to X-ray amorphous PZT phase. Further, through crystallite growth, the X-ray crystalline PZT is formed. This method can be extended for the preparation of PLZT powder as well. The resulting powders are sinterable to high density ceramics.

Fine powders consisting of aggregated submicron crystallites of Ba(Ti,Zr)O3 in the complete range of Ti/Zr ratios are prepared at 85–130°C by hydrothermal method, starting from TiO2 + ZrO2 · xH2O mixed gel and Ba(OH)2 solution. The products obtained below 110°C incorporate considerable amounts of H2O and OH− within the lattice. As-prepared BaTiO3 is cubic and converts to tetragonal phase after the heat treatment at 1200°C, accompanied by the loss of residual hydroxyl ions. TEM investgations of the growth features show a transformation of the gel to the crystallite. Ba2+ ions entering the gel produce chemical changes within the gel, followed by dehydration, resulting in a cubic perovskite phase irrespective of Ti/Zr. The sintering properties of these powders to fine-grained, high density ceramics and their dielectric properties are presented.

Fine powders of TiO2 (rutile) with high degree of crystallinity are formed from aqueous titanium oxychloride solution under hydrothermal conditions at 160–230°C and 15–100 kg/cm2 for 1–2 hours. The anatase phase is produced from the same medium when sulfate ion impurity is present, with Image . Both these fine powders are converted to BaTiO3, SrTiO3 or CaTiO3 when suspended in Ba(OH)2 or Sr(OH)2 solution or in an aqueous slurry of carbonate-free CaO with Image , at 180–280°C and 12–65 kg/cm2 for 4–8 hours. The resulting fine powders contain monocrystallites of the perovskite phase with 0.1–1.5 μm particle size.

The standard Gibbs energies of formation of lanthanum orthoferrite (LaFeO3-delta) and hexaferrite (LaFe12O19)were determined using solid-state electrochemical cells incorporating yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and pure oxygen gas at ambient pressure as the reference electrode. From emf of the solid-state cell, the Gibbs energy of formation of nonstoichiometric orthoferrite (LaFeO3-delta) is obtained. To derive values for the stoichiometric phase, variation of the oxygen nonstoichiometric parameter with oxygen partial pressure was measured using thermogravimetry under controlled gas mixtures. The results obtained for LaFeO3 and LaFe12O19 can be summarized by the following equations, which represent the formation of ternary oxides from their component binary oxides: 1/2 La2O3 + 1/2 Fe2O3 -> LaFeO3: Delta G degrees (LaFeO3) (+/- 450) (J mol(-1)) = -62920 - 2.12T (K), and 1/2 La2O3 + 9/2Fe(2)O(3) + Fe3O4 -> LaFe12O19; Delta G degrees (LaFe12O19) (+/- 200) (J mol(-1)) = -103900 + 21.25T (K). These data are discussed critically in comparison with thermodynamic values reported in the literature from a variety of measurements. The values obtained in this study are consistent with calorimetric entropy and enthalpy of formation of the perovskite phase and with some of the Gibbs energy measurements reported in the literature. For the lanthanum hexaferrite (LaFe12O19) there are no prior thermodynamic measurements for comparison. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The results of the studies on the effect of rare earth Nd doping on the phase formation behavior and electrical properties of sol-gel derived Pb-1.05(Zr0.53Ti0.47)O-3 (PZT) thin films are presented. The perovskite phase is obtained up to 5 at. % doping and beyond that pyrochlore phase was found to coexist with the perovskite phase in all the films. The transition temperature of undoped lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film was found to be reduced with Nd doping. The Nd doped films also exhibited typical relaxor-type behavior and a diffuse phase transition, similar to that observed in relaxor materials. The introduction of Nd into the PZT lattice probably introduces disorder in the B site of ABO(3) lattice, which causes the observed dielectric relaxation. Efforts were made to isolate the irreversible component contributions in low field dielectric and high field polarization switching behavior. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

A study was done on pulsed laser deposited relaxor ferroelectric thin films of 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) deposited on platinized silicon substrates with template layers to observe the influence of the template layers on physical and electrical properties. Initial results, showed that perovskite phase (80% by volume) was obtained through proper selection of the processing conditions on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The films were grown at 300°C and then annealed in a rapid thermal annealing furnace in the temperature range of 750-850°C to induce crystallization. Comparison of the films annealed at different temperatures revealed a change in crystallinity, perovskite phase formation and grain size. These results were further used to improve the quality of the perovskite PMN-PT phase by inserting thin layers of TiO2 on the Pt substrate. These resulted in an increase in perovskite phase in the films even at lower annealing temperatures. Dielectric studies on the PMN-PT films show very high values of dielectric constant (1300) at room temperature, which further improved with the insertion of the template seed layer. The relaxor properties of the PMN-PT were correlated with Vogel-Fulcher theory to determine the actual nature of the relaxation process.

Relaxor ferroelectric thin films of 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.3PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) deposited on platinized silicon substrates with and without template layers were studied. Perovskite phase (80% by volume) was obtained through proper selection of the processing conditions on bare Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The films were initially grown at 300 degreesC using pulsed-laser ablation and subsequently annealed in a rapid thermal annealing furnace in the temperature range of 750-850 degreesC to induce crystallization. Comparison of microstructure of the films annealed at different temperatures showed change in perovskite phase formation and grain size etc. Results from compositional analysis of the films revealed that the films initially possessed high content of lead percentage, which subsequently decreased after annealing at temperature 750-850 degreesC. Films with highest perovskite content were found to form at 820-840 degreesC on Pt substrates where the Pb content was near stoichiometric. Further improvement in the formation of perovskite PMN-PT phase was obtained by using buffer layers of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 (LSCO) on the Pt substrate. This resulted 100% perovskite phase formation in the films deposited at 650 degreesC. Dielectric studies on the PMN-PT films with LSCO template layers showed high values of relative dielectric constant (3800) with a loss factor (tan delta) of 0.035 at a frequency of 1 kHz at room temperature. Pyrochlore phase free [Pb0.94Sr0.06] [(Mn1/3Sb2/3)(0.05)(Zr0.53Ti0.47)(0.95)] O-3 ceramics has been synthesized with pure Perovskite phase by semi-wet route using the columbite precursor method. The field dependences of the dielectric response and the conductivity have been measured in a frequency range from 50 Hz to 1 MHz and in a temperature range from 303 K to 773 K. An analysis of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric permittivity with frequency has been performed, assuming a distribution of relaxation times. The scaling behavior of the dielectric loss spectra suggests that the distribution of the relaxation times is temperature independent. The SEM photographs of the sintered specimens present the homogenous structures and well-grown grains with a sharp grain boundary. The material exhibits tetragonal structure. When measured at frequency (100 Hz), the polarization shows a strong field dependence. Different piezoelectric figures of merit (k(p), d(33) and Q(m)) of the material have also been measured obtaining their values as 0.53, 271 pC/N and 1115, respectively, which are even higher than those of pure PZT with morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) composition. Thus the present ceramics have the optimal overall performance and are promising candidates for the various high power piezoelectric applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Temperature-dependent x-ray powder-diffraction study of the tetragonal compositions of PbTiO3-BiFeO3 series has revealed that, unlike for all the known ferroelectric perovskites, the compositions exhibiting giant tetragonality is stabilized from the cubic phase via a complex transition pathway which involve (i) formation of minor monoclinic phase with a large pseudotetragonality along with an intermediate tetragonal phase (major) with a small tetragonality, (ii) gradual vanishing of the intermediate tetragonal phase and concomitant increase in the monoclinic regions, and finally (iii) gradual transformation of the monoclinic phase to the tetragonal phase with giant tetragonality. The system seems to adopt such a complex transition pathway to create amicrostructure with very large number of domains and interfaces for stress relief, which would not have been possible in case of a direct cubic-tetragonal transition.

Cubic cuprates (a not, vert, similar 18.6 Å) with a BaCuO2-type structure were obtained in the Ba-Pb-Cu-O and Ba-Bi-Cu-O systems by the reaction of the component oxides at a high temperature (1370-1420 K), followed by quenching. By annealing these phases in oxygen at 1070-1120 K, perovskite-like phase (a not, vert, similar 4.3 Å) of the formulae BaPb1-xCuxO3-y and BaBi1-xCuxO3-y (0 < x ? 0.5) were obtained. A perovskite of nominal composition BaPb0.25Tl0.25 Cu0.5O3-y, prepared by a similar procedure, was found to be superconducting with a Tc of not, vert, similar 70 K.

Neutron powder diffraction measurements on Ca2FeReO6 reveal that this double perovskite orders ferrimagnetically and shows anomalous lattice parameter behavior below T-C=521 K. Below similar to300 K and similar to160 K we observe that the high-T monoclinic crystal structure separates into two and three monoclinic phases, respectively. A magnetic field suppresses the additional phases at low T in favor of the highest-T phase. These manifestations of the orbital degree of freedom of Re 5d electrons indicate that these electrons are strongly correlated and the title compound is a Mott insulator, with competing spin-orbitally ordered states.

The Griffiths phase-like features and the spin-phonon coupling effects observed in Tb(2)NiMnO(6) are reported. The double perovskite compound crystallizes in monoclinic P2(1)/n space group and exhibits a magnetic phase transition at T(c) similar to 111 K as an abrupt change in magnetization. A negative deviation from ideal Curie-Weiss law exhibited by 1/chi(T) curves and less-than-unity susceptibility exponents from the power-law analysis of inverse susceptibility are reminiscent of Griffiths phase-like features. Arrott plots derived from magnetization isotherms support the inhomogeneous nature of magnetism in this material. The observed effects originate from antiferromagnetic interactions that arise from inherent disorder in the system. Raman scattering experiments display no magnetic-order-induced phonon renormalization below Tc in Tb(2)NiMnO(6), which is different from the results observed in other double perovskites and is correlated to the smaller size of the rare earth. The temperature evolution of full-width-at-half-maximum for the stretching mode at 645 cm(-1) presents an anomaly that coincides with the magnetic transition temperature and signals a close connection between magnetism and lattice in this material.
