Simultaneous consideration of both performance and reliability issues is important in the choice of computer architectures for real-time aerospace applications. One of the requirements for such a fault-tolerant computer system is the characteristic of graceful degradation. A shared and replicated resources computing system represents such an architecture. In this paper, a combinatorial model is used for the evaluation of the instruction execution rate of a degradable, replicated resources computing system such as a modular multiprocessor system. Next, a method is presented to evaluate the computation reliability of such a system utilizing a reliability graph model and the instruction execution rate. Finally, this computation reliability measure, which simultaneously describes both performance and reliability, is applied as a constraint in an architecture optimization model for such computing systems. This paper is aimed at reviewing the notion of Byzantine-resilient distributed computing systems, the relevant protocols and their possible applications as reported in the literature. The three agreement problems, namely, the consensus problem, the interactive consistency problem, and the generals problem have been discussed. Various agreement protocols for the Byzantine generals problem have been summarized in terms of their performance and level of fault-tolerance. The three classes of Byzantine agreement protocols discussed are the deterministic, randomized, and approximate agreement protocols. Finally, application of the Byzantine agreement protocols to clock synchronization is highlighted.

Abstract-The success of automatic speaker recognition in laboratory environments suggests applications in forensic science for establishing the Identity of individuals on the basis of features extracted from speech. A theoretical model for such a verification scheme for continuous normaliy distributed featureIss developed. The three cases of using a) single feature, b)multipliendependent measurements of a single feature, and c)multpleindependent features are explored. The number iofndependent features needed for areliable personal identification is computed based on the theoretcal model and an expklatory study of some speech featues.

This paper describes the design and implementation of ADAMIS (â˜A database for medical information systemsâ). ADAMIS is a relational database management system for a general hospital environment. Apart from the usual database (DB) facilities of data definition and data manipulation, ADAMIS supports a query language called the â˜simplified medical query languageâ (SMQL) which is completely end-user oriented and highly non-procedural. Other features of ADAMIS include provision of facilities for statistics collection and report generation. ADAMIS also provides adequate security and integrity features and has been designed mainly for use on interactive terminals.

Database management systems offer a very reliable and attractive data organization for fast and economical information storage and processing for diverse applications. It is much more important that the information should be easily accessible to users with varied backgrounds, professional as well as casual, through a suitable data sublanguage. The language adopted here (APPLE) is one such language for relational database systems and is completely nonprocedural and well suited to users with minimum or no programming background. This is supported by an access path model which permits the user to formulate completely nonprocedural queries expressed solely in terms of attribute names. The data description language (DDL) and data manipulation language (DML) features of APPLE are also discussed. The underlying relational database has been implemented with the help of the DATATRIEVE-11 utility for record and domain definition which is available on the PDP-11/35. The package is coded in Pascal and MACRO-11. Further, most of the limitations of the DATATRIEVE-11 utility have been eliminated in the interface package.

Color displays used in image processing systems consist of a refresh memory buffer storing digital image data which are converted into analog signals to display an image by driving the primary color channels (red, green, and blue) of a color television monitor. The color cathode ray tube (CRT) of the monitor is unable to reproduce colors exactly due to phosphor limitations, exponential luminance response of the tube to the applied signal, and limitations imposed by the digital-to-analog conversion. In this paper we describe some computer simulation studies (using the U*V*W* color space) carried out to measure these reproduction errors. Further, a procedure to correct for color reproduction error due to the exponential luminance response (gamma) of the picture tube is proposed, using a video-lookup-table and a higher resolution digital-to-analog converter. It is found, on the basis of computer simulation studies, that the proposed gamma correction scheme is effective and robust with respect to variations in the assumed value of the gamma.

This paper is concerned with the development of an algorithm for pole placement in multi-input dynamic systems. The algorithm which uses a series of elementary transformations is believed to be simpler, computationally more efficient and numerically stable when compared with earlier methods. In this paper two methods have been presented.

In a letter RauA proposed a new method for designing statefeedback controllers using eigenvalue sensitivity matrices. However, there appears to be a conceptual mistake in the procedure, or else it is unduly restricted in its applicability. In particular the equation â BR~lBTK = A/.I, in which K is a positive-definite symmetric matrix.

The stimulation technique has gained much importance in the performance studies of Concurrency Control (CC) algorithms for distributed database systems. However, details regarding the simulation methodology and implementation are seldom mentioned in the literature. One objective of this paper is to elaborate the simulation methodology using SIMULA. Detailed studies have been carried out on a centralised CC algorithm and its modified version. The results compare well with a previously reported study on these algorithms. Here, additional results concerning the update intensiveness of transactions and the degree of conflict are obtained. The degree of conflict is quantitatively measured and it is seen to be a useful performance index. Regression analysis has been carried out on the results, and an optimisation study using the regression model has been performed to minimise the response time. Such a study may prove useful for the design of distributed database systems.

In this technical note, it is established that the unassignable polynomial defined for a not strongly connected decentralized control system is not equal to Davison's fixed polynomial. This leads to a "sufficient condition" for the equality of the unassignable polynomial and Davison's fixed polynomial for strongly connected systems.

Functional Programming (FP) systems are modified and extended to form Nondeterministic Functional Programming (NFP) systems in which nondeterministic programs can be specified and both deterministic and nondeterministic programs can be verified essentially within the system. It is shown that the algebra of NFP programs has simpler laws in comparison with the algebra of FP programs. "Regular" forms are introduced to put forward a disciplined way of reasoning about programs. Finally, an alternative definition of "linear" forms is proposed for reasoning about recursively defined programs. This definition, when used to test the linearity of forms, results in simpler verification conditions than those generated by the original definition of linear forms.

Effectiveness evaluation of aerospace fault-tolerant computing systems used in a phased-mission environment is rather tricky and difficult because of the interaction of its several degraded performance levels with the multiple objectives of the mission and the use environment. Part I uses an approach based on multiobjective phased-mission analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of a distributed avionics architecture used in a transport aircraft. Part II views the computing system as a multistate s-coherent structure. Lower bounds on the probabilities of accomplishing various levels of performance are evaluated.

In this paper a study of the free, forced and self-excited vibrations of non-linear, two degrees of freedom systems is reported. The responses are obtained by linearizing the nonlinear equations using the weighted mean square linearization approach. The scope of this approach, in terms of the type of non-linearities the method can tackle, is also discussed.
