We consider the simplest IEEE 802.11 WLAN networks for which analytical models are available and seek to provide an experimental validation of these models. Our experiments include the following cases: (i) two nodes with saturated queues, sending fixed-length UDP packets to each other, and (ii) a TCP-controlled transfer between two nodes. Our experiments are based entirely on Aruba AP-70 access points operating under Linux. We report our observations on certain non-standard behavior of the devices. In cases where the devices adhere to the standards, we find that the results from the analytical models estimate the experimental data with a mean error of 3-5%.

Based on dynamic inversion, a relatively straightforward approach is presented in this paper for nonlinear flight control design of high performance aircrafts, which does not require the normal and lateral acceleration commands to be first transferred to body rates before computing the required control inputs. This leads to substantial improvement of the tracking response. Promising results are obtained from six degree-offreedom simulation studies of F-16 aircraft, which are found to be superior as compared to an existing approach (which is also based on dynamic inversion). The new approach has two potential benefits, namely reduced oscillatory response (including elimination of non-minimum phase behavior) and reduced control magnitude. Next, a model-following neuron-adaptive design is augmented the nominal design in order to assure robust performance in the presence of parameter inaccuracies in the model. Note that in the approach the model update takes place adaptively online and hence it is philosophically similar to indirect adaptive control. However, unlike a typical indirect adaptive control approach, there is no need to update the individual parameters explicitly. Instead the inaccuracy in the system output dynamics is captured directly and then used in modifying the control. This leads to faster adaptation, which helps in stabilizing the unstable plant quicker. The robustness study from a large number of simulations shows that the adaptive design has good amount of robustness with respect to the expected parameter inaccuracies in the model.

Pre-vaporization and pre-mixing are the two main features of LPP type of combustor that operate on liquid fuels. The pre-vaporization length scale is one of its most important design parameters. In this study, the goal is to put forward a simulation based correlation for fuel vaporization performance as a function of dimensionless parameters for crossflow type of injections. Two types of fuels are studied here: jet-A and one of its potential biofuel substitutes, RME. Different sets of spray simulations are considered for crossflow type of injections. Correlations are provided for both jet-A and RME's vaporization performance as a function of non-dimensional inlet air temperature, fuel/air momentum flux ratio and normalized spray traverse distance. The mechanical behaviour of composite materials differs from that of conventional structural materials owing to their heterogeneous and anisotropic nature. Different types of defects and anomalies get induced in these materials during the fabrication process. Further, during their service life, the components made of composite materials develop different types of damage. The performance and life of such components is governed by the combined effect of all these defects and damage. While porosity, voids, inclusions etc., are some defects those can get induced during the fabrication of composites, matrix cracks, interface debonds, delaminations and fiber breakage are major types of service induced damage which are of concern. During the service life of components made of composites, one type of damage can grow and initiate another type of damage. For example, matrix cracks can gradually grow to the interface and initiate debonds. Interface debonds in a particular plane can lead to delaminations. Consequently, the combined effect of different types of distributed damage causes the failure of the component. A set of non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods is well established for testing conventional metallic materials. Some of them can also be utilized for composite materials as they are, and in some cases with a little different approach or modification. Ultrasonics, Radiography, Thermography, Fiber Optics, Acoustic Emision Techniques etc., to name a few. Detection, evaluation and characterization of different types of defects and damage encountered in composite materials and structures using different NDE tools is discussed briefly in this paper.

The application of multilevel control strategies for load-frequency control of interconnected power systems is assuming importance. A large multiarea power system may be viewed as an interconnection of several lower-order subsystems, with possible change of interconnection pattern during operation. The solution of the control problem involves the design of a set of local optimal controllers for the individual areas, in a completely decentralised environment, plus a global controller to provide the corrective signal to account for interconnection effects. A global controller, based on the least-square-error principle suggested by Siljak and Sundareshan, has been applied for the LFC problem. A more recent work utilises certain possible beneficial aspects of interconnection to permit more desirable system performances. The paper reports the application of the latter strategy to LFC of a two-area power system. The power-system model studied includes the effects of excitation system and governor controls. A comparison of the two strategies is also made.

Liquids of silver-copper alloys with near eutectic compositions embedded in a copper matrix were undercooled. The structural and microstructural investigations of these alloys solidified from undercooled temperature indicated the absence of both the eutectic reaction and diffusionless transformation below the equal free energy curve (T0). Instead the liquid maintained local equilibrium with the copper dendrites continuously until it intersected the extended solidus of the silver rich solid solution.

The finite element method is used to analyse stresses and displacements in a monoblock cylinder open at one end only. The cylinder is internally pressurised. The analysis shows that the minimum pressure required to cause yield in the cylinder decreases rapidly with increasing cylinder height until the height is about the same as the outer radius of the cylinder, beyond which the decrease is marginal. Introduction of a fillet at the internal corner enhances the design pressure substantially while a fillet at the outer corner affects this pressure only marginally.

In order to understand the molecular mechanism of non-oxidative decarboxylation of aromatic acids observed in microbial systems, 2,3 dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) decarboxylase from Image Image was purified to homogeneity by affinity chromatography. The enzyme (Mr 120 kDa) had four identical subunits (28 kDa each) and was specific for DHBA. It had a pH optimum of 5.2 and Km was 0.34mM. The decarboxylation did not require any cofactors, nor did the enzyme had any pyruvoyl group at the active site. The carboxyl group and hydroxyl group in the Image -position were required for activity. The preliminary spectroscopic properties of the enzyme are also reported.

A new class of solid compounds, viz., bisthiocarbonohydrazones and thiosemicarbazones, have been found to be hypergolic with fuming nitric acid. The observed ignition delays of these hypergols have been compared with those of the monothiocarbonohydrazones-nitric acid systems and explained in terms of the chemical reactions-neutralization, oxidation, and nitration-occurring in the preignition stage. p-Nitrobenzoic acid, benzoic acid, benzaldehyde, sulfur trioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and nitrogen have been isolated as preignition reaction intermediates in the mono- and bisbenzaldehydethiocarbonohydrazone-nitric acid systems. A scheme of reactions occurring in the preignition stage is proposed based on the formation of these products.

Solvolysis of normal and pseudo phthaloyl chlorides in aqueous acetone and in aqueous dioxane has revealed that the former solvolyses about hundred-fold faster than the latter. Contrary to the accepted belief, there is no evidence for equilibrium between the normal and the pseudo forms of phthaloyl chloride, under a variety of conditions.

The rates of alkaline hydrolysis of methyl &benzoylpropionate (I), methyl y-benzoylbutyrate (11) and methyll6-benzoylvalerate (In) decrease in the order I > I1 > III. Keto participation is the predominant pathway in the case of y-keto esters. Evidence has also been obtained for keto participation in the case of 6-keto esters, whereas no such evidence is available in the case of r-keto esters studied.
