Some bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) exhibit high crack initiation toughness due to shear band mediated plastic flow at the crack tip and yet do not display additional resistance to crack growth due to the lack of a microstructure. Thus, at crack initiation, the fracture behavior of BMGs transits from that of ductile alloys to that of brittle ceramics. In this paper, we attempt to understand the physics behind the characteristic length from the notch root at which this transition occurs, through testing of four-point bend specimens made of a nominally ductile Zr-based BMG in three different structural states. In the as-cast state, both symmetric (mode I) and asymmetric (mixed mode) bend specimens are tested. The process of shear band mediated plastic flow followed by crack initiation at the notch root was monitored through in situ imaging. Results show that stable crack growth occurs inside a dominant shear band through a distance of, similar to 60 mu m, irrespective of the structural state and mode mixity, before attaining criticality. Detailed finite element simulations show that this length corresponds to the distance from the notch root over which a positive hydrostatic stress gradient prevails. The mean ridge heights on fractured surfaces are found to correlate with the toughness of the BMG. The Argon and Salama model, which is based on the meniscus instability phenomenon at the notch root, is modified to explain the experimentally observed physics of fracture in ductile BMGs. Bulk metallic glass (BMG) matrix composites with crystalline dendrites as reinforcements exhibit a wide variance in their microstructures (and thus mechanical properties), which in turn can be attributed to the processing route employed, which affects the size and distribution of the dendrites. A critical investigation on the microstructure and tensile properties of Zr/Ti-based BMG composites of the same composition, but produced by different routes, was conducted so as to identify ``structure-property'' connections in these materials. This was accomplished by employing four different processing methods-arc melting, suction casting, semi-solid forging and induction melting on a water-cooled copper boat-on composites with two different dendrite volume fractions, V-d. The change in processing parameters only affects microstructural length scales such as the interdendritic spacing, lambda, and dendrite size, delta, whereas compositions of the matrix and dendrite are unaffected. Broadly, the composite's properties are insensitive to the microstructural length scales when V-d is high (similar to 75%), whereas they become process dependent for relatively lower V-d (similar to 55%). Larger delta in arc-melted and forged specimens result in higher ductility (7-9%) and lower hardening rates, whereas smaller dendrites increase the hardening rate. A bimodal distribution of dendrites offers excellent ductility at a marginal cost of yield strength. Finer lambda result in marked improvements in both ductility and yield strength, due to the confinement of shear band nucleation sites in smaller volumes of the glassy phase. Forging in the semi-solid state imparts such a microstructure. (c) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Electromigration, mostly known for its damaging effects in microelectronic devices, is basically a material transport phenomenon driven by the electric field and kinetically controlled by diffusion. In this work, we show how controlled electromigration can be used to create scientifically interesting and technologically useful micro-/nano-scale patterns, which are otherwise extremely difficult to fabricate using conventional cleanroom practices, and present a few examples of such patterns. In a solid thin-film structure, electromigration is used to generate pores at preset locations for enhancing the sensitivity of a MEMS sensor. In addition to electromigration in solids, the flow instability associated with the electromigration-induced long-range flow of liquid metals is shown to form numerous structures with high surface area to volume ratio. In very thin solid films on non-conductive substrates, solidification of flow-affected region results in the formation of several features, such as nano-/micro-sized discrete metallic beads, 3D structures consisting of nano-stepped stairs, etc.

Recent experiments have shown that nano-sized metallic glass (MG) specimens subjected to tensile loading exhibit increased ductility and work hardening. Failure occurs by necking as opposed to shear banding which is seen in bulk samples. Also, the necking is generally observed at shallow notches present on the specimen surface. In this work, continuum finite element analysis of tensile loading of nano-sized notched MG specimens is conducted using a thermodynamically consistent non-local plasticity model to clearly understand the deformation behavior from a mechanics perspective. It is found that plastic zone size in front of the notch attains a saturation level at the stage when a dominant shear band forms extending across the specimen. This size scales with an intrinsic material length associated with the interaction stress between flow defects. A transition in deformation behavior from quasi-brittle to ductile becomes possible when this critical plastic zone size is larger than the uncracked ligament length. These observations corroborate with atomistic simulations and experimental results. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transition-metal oxides at the metal-insulator boundary, especially those belonging to the perovskite family, exhibit fascinating phenomena such as insulator-metal transitions controlled by composition, high-temperature superconductivity and giant magnetoresistance (GMR), Interestingly, many of these marginally metallic oxides obey the established criteria for metallicity and have a finite density of states at the Fermi;level. The perovskite manganates exhibiting GMR, on the other hand, are unusual in that they possess very high resistivities in the 'metallic' state and show no significant density of states at the Fermi level, Marginal metallicity in oxide systems is a problem of great complexity and contemporary interest and its understanding is of crucial significance to the diverse phenomena exhibited by these materials.

Uniaxial compression experiments on 0.3, 1 and 3 mu m diameter micropillars of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass in as-cast, shot-peened and structurally relaxed conditions were conducted. Shear band formation and stable propagation is observed to be the plastic deformation mode in all cases, with no detectable difference in yield strength according to either size or condition. The limitations of uniaxial compression tests in assessing the influence of various material conditions on plasticity, when it is inhomogeneous in nature, are illustrated.

The technique of friction stir welding (FSW) puts effective use frictional heat for the purpose of joining metallic materials. In this research article, we present and discuss an experimental method to determine the coefficient of friction during FSW. The experiments were conducted to study the interaction between the FSW tool (a die steel) and the base metal (a high strength aluminum alloy) at various contact pressures (13MPa, 26MPa, and 39MPa) and rotation speeds (200rpm, 600rpm, 1000rpm, and 1400rpm). The experimental results, the microstructure, and the process temperature reveal the experimental setup to be capable of simulating the conditions during FSW. The coefficient of friction was found to vary from 0.15 to 1.4, and the temperature increased to as high as 450C. The coefficient of friction was found to increase with temperature. There exists a critical temperature at which point a steep increase in the coefficient of friction was observed. The critical temperature decreases from 250C at a contact pressure of 26MPa to 200C at contact pressure of 34MPa. Below the critical temperature at a specific contact pressure the maximum coefficient of friction is 0.6, and above the critical temperature it reaches a value as high as 1.4. The steep increase in the coefficient of friction is found to be due to the seizure phenomenon and the contact condition during FSW between the tool and the workpiece (base metal) is found to be sticking.

The glass transition, whereby liquids transform into amorphous solids at low temperatures, is a subject of intense research despite decades of investigation. Explaining the enormous increase in relaxation times of a liquid upon supercooling is essential for understanding the glass transition. Although many theories, such as the Adam-Gibbs theory, have sought to relate growing relaxation times to length scales associated with spatial correlations in liquid structure or motion of molecules, the role of length scales in glassy dynamics is not well established. Recent studies of spatially correlated rearrangements of molecules leading to structural relaxation, termed ``spatially heterogeneous dynamics,'' provide fresh impetus in this direction. A powerful approach to extract length scales in critical phenomena is finite-size scaling, wherein a system is studied for sizes traversing the length scales of interest. We perform finite-size scaling for a realistic glass-former, using computer simulations, to evaluate the length scale associated with spatially heterogeneous dynamics, which grows as temperature decreases. However, relaxation times that also grow with decreasing temperature do not exhibit standard finite-size scaling with this length. We show that relaxation times are instead determined, for all studied system sizes and temperatures, by configurational entropy, in accordance with the Adam-Gibbs relation, but in disagreement with theoretical expectations based on spin-glass models that configurational entropy is not relevant at temperatures substantially above the critical temperature of mode-coupling theory. Our results provide new insights into the dynamics of glass-forming liquids and pose serious challenges to existing theoretical descriptions.

The composition-controlled metal-insulator transition in the perovskite systems LaNi1-xMxO3 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) has been investigated by transport measurements over the temperature range 12-300 K. These systems, which have critical electron densities (nc) in the range (1-2) -1020 electrons cm-3, exhibit sharp metal-insulator transitions at the base temperature. The corresponding minimum metallic conductivity (Ï-min), separating the localized and itinerant electronic regimes, is of the order of 102 ohm-1 cm-1. Particular attention is paid to the idea of Ï-min scaling with nc, and our present results are compared with earlier studies of the metal-insulator transition in low (e.g., Ge:Sb) and high (e.g., metal-ammonia, supercritical Hg) electron-density systems. A link is established between the transport and magnetic properties of the title systems at the metal-insulator transition.

By modifying the electrodeposition technique, we have stabilized the silver nanowires (AgNWs) in high-energy hexagonal closed packed (hcp)structure. The conductivity noise measurements show that the noise magnitude in hcp silver nanowires is several orders of magnitude smaller than that of face centered cubic (fcc) silver nanowires, which is obtained by standard over potential lectrodeposition (OPD)technique. The reduction of noise can be attributed to the restricted dislocation dynamics in hcp AgNWs due to the presence of less number of slip systems. Temperature dependent noise measurements show that the noise magnitude in hcp AgNWs is weakly temperature dependent while in fcc AgNWs it is strong function of temperature.

Plasticity in amorphous alloys is associated with strain softening, induced by the creation of additional free volume during deformation. In this paper, the role of free volume, which was a priori in the material, on work softening was investigated. For this, an as-cast Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) was systematically annealed below its glass transition temperature, so as to reduce the free volume content. The bonded-interface indentation technique is used to generate extensively deformed and well defined plastic zones. Nanoindentation was utilized to estimate the hardness of the deformed as well as undeformed regions. The results show that the structural relaxation annealing enhances the hardness and that both the subsurface shear band number density and the plastic zone size decrease with annealing time. The serrations in the nanoindentation load-displacement curves become smoother with structural relaxation. Regardless of the annealing condition, the nanohardness of the deformed regions is similar to 12-15% lower, implying that the prior free volume only changes the yield stress (or hardness) but not the relative flow stress (or the extent of strain softening). Statistical distributions of the nanohardness obtained from deformed and undeformed regions have no overlap, suggesting that shear band number density has no influence on the plastic characteristics of the deformed region.

The oxidation behaviour of the metallic glass has been compared with a crystallized sample of the same composition. A similar study has been carried out on the metallic glass Ni76Si12B12,which shows the importance of chemical composition in determining the surface oxidation behaviour of these alloys.

An experimental study to ascertain the ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) in a bulk metallic glass (BMG) was conducted. Results of the impact toughness tests conducted at various temperatures on as-cast and structurally relaxed Zr-based BMG show a sharp DBT. The DBT temperature was found to be sensitive to the free-volume content in the alloy. Possible factors that result in the DBT were critically examined. It was found that the postulate of a critical free volume required for the amorphous alloy to exhibit good toughness cannot rationalize the experimental trends. Likewise, the Poisson's ratio-toughness correlations, which suggest a critical Poisson's ratio above which all glasses are tough, were found not to hold good. Viscoplasticity theories, developed using the concept of shear transformation zones and which describe the temperature and strain rate dependence of the crack-tip plasticity in BMGs, appear to be capable of capturing the essence of the experiments. Our results highlight the need for a more generalized theory to understand the origins of toughness in BMGs.

The deformation and fracture response of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) post-annealing above the glass transition temperature is examined. The toughness of the glass-matrix composite exhibits a sharp transition beyond a critical volume fraction of crystallization to values as low as that of brittle silicate glass. Instrumented indentation tests supplemented by impact tests were used to study this ductile to brittle transition exhibited by the partially crystallized samples. Indentation on the anneal-embrittled specimens shows lateral cracks in addition to cracks along the corners. The applicability of the Poisson's ratio-toughness correlation with respect to partially crystallized samples is also investigated.

The authors examine the critical divergence of the low-frequency conductivity of the noninteracting Fermi glass and interacting electron glass models of the insulating phase of a disordered system as the metallic phase is approached. Results for the two are found to be rather different, which can be tested experimentally. In particular, for the electron glass, there exists a nonvanishing contribution to the dielectric constants from the low-frequency (hopping) conductivity even at low temperatures, which scales with the high-frequency (optical) contribution, and diverges with the same exponent at the insulator-metal transition.
