The role of a computer emerged from modeling and analyzing concepts (ideas) to generate concepts. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis had attracted much attention in the past decades. To find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices, ten experimental studies were conducted. Observations from these empirical studies would be used as the basis to develop knowledge involved in the multi-state design synthesis process. In this paper, we propose a computational representation for expressing the multi-state design task and for enumerating multi-state behaviors of kinematic pairs and mechanisms. This computational representation would be used to formulate computational methods for the synthesis process to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices by generating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. The research work presented here is based on an empirical study of the process of synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices. As a background to the work, the paper explores concepts of what mechanical device, state, single state and multiple state are, and in the context of the above observational studies, attempts to identify the outstanding issues for supporting multiple state synthesis of mechanical devices.

In the present study, amino-silane modified layered organosilicates were used to reinforce cyclic olefin copolymer to enhance the thermal, mechanical and moisture impermeable barrier properties. The optimum clay loading (4%) in the nanocomposite increases the thermal stability of the film while further loading decreases film stability. Water absorption behavior at 62 degrees C was carried out and compared with the behavior at room temperature and 48 degrees C. The stiffness of the matrix increases with clay content and the recorded strain to failure for the composite films was lower than the neat film. Dynamic mechanical analysis show higher storage modulus and low loss modulus for 2.5-4 wt% clay loading. Calcium degradation test and device encapsulation also show the evidence of optimum clay loading of 4 wt% for improved low water vapor transmission rates compared to other nanocomposite films. The short duration of the Doppler signal and noise content in it necessitate a validation scheme to be incorporated in the electronic processor used for frequency measurement, There are several different validation schemes that can be employed in period timing devices. A detailed study of the influence of these validation schemes on the measured frequency has been reported here. These studies were carried out by using a combination of a fast A/D converter and computer. Doppler bursts obtained from an air flow were digitised and stored on magnetic discs. Suitable computer programs were then used to simulate the performance of period timing devices with different validation schemes and the frequency of the stored bursts were evaluated. It is found that best results are obtained when the validation scheme enables frequency measurement to be made over a large number of cycles within the burst.

A period timing device suitable for processing laser Doppler anemometer signals has been described here. The important features of this instrument are: it is inexpensive, simple to operate, and easy to fabricate. When the concentration of scattering particles is low the Doppler signal is in the form of a burst and the Doppler frequency is measured by timing the zero crossings of the signal. But the presence of noise calls for the use of validation criterion, and a 5–8 cycles comparison has been used in this instrument. Validation criterion requires the differential count between the 5 and 8 cycles to be multiplied by predetermined numbers that prescribe the accuracy of measurement. By choosing these numbers to be binary numbers, much simplification in circuit design has been accomplished since this permits the use of shift registers for multiplication. Validation accuracies of 1.6%, 3.2%, 6.3%, and 12.5% are possible with this device. The design presented here is for a 16-bit processor and uses TTL components. By substituting Schottky barrier TTLs the clock frequency can be increased from about 10 to 30 MHz resulting in an extension in the range of the instrument. A vibration isolator is described which incorporates a near-zero-spring-rate device within its operating range. The device is an assembly of a vertical spring in parallel with two inclined springs. A low spring rate is achieved by combining the equivalent stiffness in the vertical direction of the inclined springs with the stiffness of the vertical central spring. It is shown that there is a relation between the geometry and the stiffness of the individual springs that results in a low spring rate. Computer simulation studies of a single-degree-of-freedom model for harmonic base input show that the performance of the proposed scheme is superior to that of the passive schemes with linear springs and skyhook damping configuration. The response curves show that, for small to large amplitudes of base disturbance, the system goes into resonance at low frequencies of excitation. Thus, it is possible to achieve very good isolation over a wide low-frequency band. Also, the damper force requirements for the proposed scheme are much lower than for the damper force of a skyhook configuration or a conventional linear spring with a semi-active damper.

In this paper we present and compare the results obtained from semi-classical and quantum mechanical simulation for a Double Gate MOSFET structure to analyze the electrostatics and carrier dynamics of this device. The geometries like gate length, body, thickness of this device have been chosen according to the ITRS specification for the different technology nodes. We have shown the extent of deviation between the semi-classical and quantum mechanical results and hence the need of quantum simulations for the promising nanoscale devices in the future technology nodes predicted in ITRS.

A simple mirror holder which permits the use of locally damaged laser morrors by allowing the undamaged areas of the reflector to be aligned along the laser optic axis is described. The mirror holder has an eccentric step for housing the mirror and a concentric aperture through which the undamaged surface of the reflector is utilised. By varying the eccentricity and by rotating the mirror inside the step the entire surface area of the reflector can be used successively.

We report on the formation of a stable Body-Centered Heptahedral (BCH) crystalline nanobridge structure of diameter ~ 1nm under high strain rate tensile loading to a <100> Cu nanowire. Extensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are performed. Six different cross-sectional dimensions of Cu nanowires are analyzed, i.e. 0.3615 x 0.3615 nm2, 0.723 x 0.723 nm2, 1.0845 x 1.0845 nm2, 1.446 x 1.446 nm2, 1.8075 x 1.8075 nm2, and 2.169 x 2.169 nm2. The strain rates used in the present simulations are 1 x 109 s-1, 1 x 108 s-1, and 1 x 107 s-1. We have shown that the length of the nanobridge can be characterized by larger plastic strain. A large plastic deformation is an indication that the structure is highly stable. The BCH nanobridge structure also shows enhanced mechanical properties such as higher fracture toughness and higher failure strain. The effect of temperature, strain rate and size of the nanowire on the formation of BCH structure is also explained in details. We also show that the initial orientation of the nanowires play an important role on the formation of BCH crystalline structure. Results indicate that proper tailoring of temperature and strain rate during processing or in the device can lead to very long BCH nanobridge structure of Cu with enhanced mechanical properties, which may find potential application for nano-scale electronic circuits.

Intra-aortic balloon pumping is a counter pulsation technique for temporary circulatory assistance in cardiogenic shock and other low cardiac output conditions. Conventional systems use a balloon at the end of a catheter driven by a solenoid valve, controlled by patient's ECG or ventricular pressure signal. This results in time delay introducted by solenoid spool inertia, gas inertia, and hysteresis effects of the solenoid. Fluidics, because of their non-moving part operation and high switching speeds, minimizes the inertial effects while contributing high reliability. This communication describes a fluidic system developed for driving the balloon accepting electric control signals.

In this study, mesoporous silica-cyclic olefin copolymer nanocomposite films were fabricated by solution casting. With an increase in silica loading, the stiffness of the matrix increased. The nanocomposite film shows increased strain to failure with moisture after aging by matrix plasticization. The storage modulus and loss factor for samples with silica content show better results compared with pristine polymer, as indicated by dynamic mechanical analysis. The interaction between filler-polymer chain exhibit hydrophobicity compared to the neat polymer. Water absorption studies at room temperature and near the T-g of the polymer (similar to 64 degrees C) were carried out. The nanocomposites up to 4 wt% filler reduces the water diffusion by forming hydrogen and chemical bonding. The result by calcium degradation test method for moisture permeability and Schottky structured organic device encapsulation under weathering condition confirms the effective reinforcement effect of silica particles in the matrix. In this work, a hybrid-polymer nanocomposite film, based on polyvinyl butyral/amino-silane functionalized nano alumina, was fabricated by melt processing. The calcium degradation measurements suggest the functionalized nanocomposite films exhibit higher resistance towards moisture penetration as compared to the neat alumina loaded films. Thermal stability, mechanical strength, and contact angle studies of the composites were also conducted to evaluate the performance of the functionalized alumina loaded films. These nanocomposite films were encapsulated over Al/P3HT/ITO Schottky structured device. The changes observed in the current density of the devices to the applied voltage before and after accelerated aging conditions are presented. The nanocomposite with functionalized alumina films exhibits 50% change in current density, which is superior to that attained with neat and non-functionalized films. POLYM. This paper presents a method to enhance both the sensitivity and bandwidth of in-plane capacitive micromachined accelerometers by using compliant mechanical amplifiers, and thus obviating the compromise between the sensitivity and bandwidth. Here, we compare one of the most sensitive single-axis capacitive accelerometers and another with large resonant frequency reported in the literature with the modified designs that include displacement-amplifying compliant mechanisms (DaCMs) occupying the same footprint and under identical conditions. We show that 62% improvement in sensitivity and 34% improvement in bandwidth in the former, and 27% and 25% in the latter can be achieved. Also presented here is a dual-axis accelerometer that uses a suspension that decouples and amplifies the displacements along the two in-plane orthogonal axes. The new design was microfabricated, packaged, and tested. The device is 25-mu m thick with the interfinger gap as large as 4 m. Despite the simplicity of the microfabrication process, the measured axial sensitivity (static) of about 0.58 V/g for both the axes was achieved with a cross-axis sensitivity of less than +/- 2%. The measured natural frequency along the two in-plane axes was 920 Hz. Displacement amplification of 6.2 was obtained using the DaCMs in the dual-axis accelerometer. 2013-0083]

Milling is an energy intensive process and it is considered as one of the most energy inefficient processes. Electrical and mechanical shock loading can be used to develop a pre-treatment methodology to enhance energy efficiency of comminution and liberation of minerals. Coal and Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) Iron ores samples were taken for the study to know the effect of shock loading. These samples were exposed to 5 electric shocks of 300 kV using an electric shock loading device. A diaphragmless shock tube was used to produce 3 and 6 compressed air shocks of Mach number 2.12 to treat the coal and Iron ore samples. Microscopic, comminution and liberation studies were carried out to compare the effectiveness of these approaches. It was found that electric shock loading can comminute the coal samples more effectively and increases the yield of carbon by 40% at 1.6 gm/cc density over the untreated coal samples. Mechanical shock loading showed improved milling performance for both the materials and 12.90% and 8.1% reduction in the D-80 of the particles was observed during grinding for treated samples of coal and iron, respectively. Liberation of minerals in BHJ Iron ore was found unaffected due to low intensity of the mechanical shock waves and non conductivity of minerals. Compressed air based shock loading is easier to operate than electrical shock loading and it needs to be explored further to improve the energy efficacy of comminution. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
