Polyamide-phosphate esters were synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of aryl phosphorodichloridates with the diols of phenoxaphosphine and phosphine oxide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by infra-red and 1H, 13C and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy. The molecular weights were determined by end-group analysis using 31P n.m.r. spectral data. The phenoxaphosphine-containing polymers showed superior thermostability and flame retardancy over the phosphine-oxide-containing polymers.

In the present study, 6061 Al metallic matrix was reinforced by 12.2 wt% df SiC particulates using liquid metallurgy route. The composite material thus obtained was extruded and characterized in the as-solutionized and peak aged conditions in order to delineate the effect of aging associated precipitation of secondary phases on the tensile fracture behavior of the composite samples. The results' of microstructural characterization studies carried out using scanning electron microscope revealed the increased presence of precipitated secondary phases in the metallic matrix and a more pronounced interfacial segregation of alloying elements in case of peak aged samples when compared to the as-solutionized samples. The results of the fractographic studies conducted on the as-solutionized samples revealed that the failure was dominated by the SiC particulates cracking while for the peak aged samples the fracture surface revealed a comparatively more pronounced SiC/6061 Al debonding and reduced SiC particulates cracking. This change in the failure behavior was rationalized in terms of embrittlement of the interfacial region brought about by the aging heat treatment and is correlated, in addition, with the mechanical properties of the composite samples in as-solutionized and peak aged conditions.

In the present investigation, the corrosive behaviour of Al 6061-TiN particulate composites prepared by liquid metallurgy has been studied in chloride medium using electroanalytical techniques such as Tafel, cyclic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Surface morphology of the sample electrodes was examined using scanning electron micrography and energy dispersive X-ray methods. X-ray diffraction technique was used to confirm inclusion of TiN particulates in the matrix alloy and identify the alloying elements and intermetallic compounds in the Al 6061 composites. Polarization studies indicate an increase in the corrosion resistance in composites compared to the matrix alloy. EIS study reveals that the polarization resistance (R (p)) increases with increase in TiN content in composites, thus confirming improved corrosion resistance in composites. The observed decrease in corrosion rate in the case of composites is due to decoupling between TiN particles and Al 6061 alloy. It is understood that after the initiation of corrosion, interfacial corrosion products may have decoupled the conducting ceramic TiN from Al 6061 matrix alloy thus eliminating the galvanic effect between them.

This paper investigates the effect of particle size of sand and the surface asperities of reinforcing material on their interlocking mechanism and its influence on the interfacial shear strength under direct sliding condition. Three sands of different sizes with similar morphological characteristics and four different types of reinforcing materials with different surface features were used in this study. Interface direct shear tests on these materials were performed in a specially developed symmetric loading interface direct shear test setup. Morphological characteristics of sand particles were determined from digital image analysis and the surface roughness of the reinforcing materials was measured using an analytical expression developed for this purpose. Interface direct shear tests at three different normal stresses were carried out by shearing the sand on the reinforcing material fixed to a smooth surface. Test results revealed that the peak interfacial friction and dilation angles are hugely dependent upon the interlocking between the sand particles and the asperities of reinforcing material, which in turn depends on the relative size of sand particles and asperities. Asperity ratio (AS/D-50) of interlocking materials, which is defined as the ratio of asperity spacing of the reinforcing material and the mean particle size of sand was found to govern the interfacial shear strength with highest interfacial strength measured when the asperity ratio was equal to one, which represents the closest fitting of sand particles into the asperities. It was also understood that the surface roughness of the reinforcing material influences the shear strength to an extent, the influence being more pronounced in coarser particles. Shear bands in the interface shear tests were analysed through image segmentation technique and it was observed that the ratio of shear band thickness (t) to the median particle size (D-50) was maximum when the AS/D-50 was equal to one. A new liquid crystalline phase, induced by the addition of small amounts of a non-mesogenic solute (such as dimethyl sulphoxide or methyl iodide) to a quaternary ammonium salt, N-methyl-N,N,N-trioctadecylammonium iodide (MTAI), has been detected by NMR and optical microscopic studies. In some cases, there is a coexistence of nematic and smectic phases. Information on the ordering of the phases in the magnetic field of the spectrometer has been derived from NMR spectra of a dissolved molecule, C-13-enriched methyl iodide. The low order parameter of the pure thermotropic nematic phase of the salt provides first-order spectra of the dissolved oriented molecules. Analyses of spectra of cis,cis-mucononitrile exemplifies the utility of the MTAI nematic phase in the determination of structural parameters of the solute.

Studies on the swelling behaviour of mixtures of bentonite clay and nonswelling coarser fractions of different sizes and shapes reveal that observed swelling occurs only after the voids of the nonswelling particles are filled up with swollen clay particles. The magnitude of the swell within the voids, called intervoid swelling is large when the size and percentage of the nonswelling coarser fraction is large. The observable swell, after intervoid swelling, is called primary swelling and follows a rectangular hyperbolic relationship with time. The total swell per gram of the clay decreases with an increase in the size of the nonswelling fraction and with a decrease in the percentage of swelling clay. Time-swell relationships show that swelling continues to occur for a long time after the primary swelling, and this is called secondary swelling.

Total strain controlled low cycle fatigue tests on 316L(N) stainless steel have been conducted in air at various strain rates in the temperature range of 773-873 K to identify the operative time-dependent mechanisms and to understand their influence on the cyclic deformation and fracture behaviour of the alloy. The cyclic stress response at all the testing conditions was marked by an initial hardening followed by stress saturation. A negative strain rate stress response is observed under specific testing conditions which is attributed to dynamic strain ageing (DSA). Transmission electron microscopy studies reveal that there is an increase in the dislocation density and enhanced slip planarity in the DSA regime. Fatigue life is found to decrease with a decrease in strain rate. The degradation in fatigue resistance is attributed to the detrimental effects associated with DSA and oxidation. Quantitative measurement of secondary cracks indicate that both transgranular and intergranular cracking are accelerated predominantly under conditions conducive to DSA.

Barium lanthanum bismuth titanate (Ba1−(3/2)xLaxBi4Ti4O15, x = 0–0.4) ceramics were fabricated using the powders synthesized via the solid-state reaction route. X-ray powder diffraction analysis confirmed the above compositions to be monophasic and belonged to the m = 4 member of the Aurivillius family of oxides. The effect of the partial presence of La3+ on Ba2+ sites on the microstructure, dielectric and relaxor behaviour of BaBi4Ti4O15 (BBT) ceramics was investigated. For the compositions pertaining to x ≤ 0.1, the dielectric constant at both room temperature and in the vicinity of the temperature of the dielectric maximum (Tm) of the parent phase (BBT) increased significantly with an increase in x while Tm remained almost constant. Tm shifted towards lower temperatures accompanied by a decrease in the magnitude of the dielectric maximum (εm) with an increase in the lanthanum content (0.1 < x ≤ 0.4). The dielectric relaxation was modelled using the Vogel–Fulcher relation and a decrease in the activation energy for frequency dispersion with increasing x was observed. The frequency dispersion of Tm was found to decrease with an increase in lanthanum doping, and for compositions corresponding to x ≥ 0.3, Tm was frequency independent. Well-developed P(polarization)–E(electric field) hysteresis loops were observed at 150 °C for all the samples and the remanent polarization (2Pr) was improved from 6.3 µC cm−2 for pure BBT to 13.4 µC cm−2 for Ba0.7La0.2Bi4Ti4O15 ceramics. Dc conductivities and associated activation energies were evaluated using impedance spectroscopy.

The solidification behaviour is described of two pure metals (Bi and Ni) and two eutectic alloys (A1-Ge and AI-Cu) under nonequilibrium conditions, in particular the microsecond pulsed laser surface melting. The resolidification behaviour of bismuth shows that epitaxial regrowth is the dominant mechanism. For mixed grain size, regrowth of larger grains dominates the microstructure and can result in the development of texture. In the case of nickel, epitaxial growth has been noted. For lower energy pulse-melted pool, grain refinement takes place, indicating nucleation of fresh nickel grains. The A1-Ge eutectic alloy indicates the nucleation and columnar growth of a metastable monoclinic phase from the melt-substrate interface at a high power density laser irradiation. An equiaxed microstructure containing the same monoclinic phase is obtained at a lower power density laser irradiation. It is shown that the requirement of solution partition acts as a barrier to eutectic regrowth from the substrate. The laser-melted pool of A1-Cu eutectic alloy includes columnar growth of c~-A1 and 0-A12Cu phase followed by the dendritic growth of A12Cu phase with ct-Al forming at the interdendritic space. In addition, a banded microstructure was observed in the resolidified laser-melted pool.

The effects of tangential friction at pin—hole interfaces are appropriately modelled for the analysis of fasteners in large composite (orthotropic) plate loaded along its edges. The pin—hole contact could be of interference, clearance or neat fit. When the plate load is monotonically increased, interference fits give rise to receding contact, whereas clearance fits result in advancing contact. In either case, the changing contact situations lead to non-linear moving boundary value problems. The neat fit comes out as a special case in which the contact and separation regions are invariant with the applied load level and so the problem remains linear. The description of boundary conditions in the presence of tangential friction, will depend on whether the problem is one of advancing or receding contact, advancing contact presenting a special problem. A model is developed for the limiting case of a rigid pin and an ideally rough interface (infinitely large friction coefficient). The non-linearity resulting from the continuously varying proportions of contact and separation at the interface, is handled by an “Inverse Formulation” which was successfully applied earlier by the authors for smooth (zero friction) interfacial conditions. The additional difficulty introduced by advancing contact is handled by adopting a “Marching Solution”. The modelling and the procedure are illustrated in respect of symmetric plate load cases. Numerical results are presented bringing out the effects of interfacial friction and plate orthotropy on load-contact relations and plate stresses.

Pressure transitions of Se-Te alloys have been studied over the entire range of compositions. Conductivities have also been measured as a function of temperature and alloy composition. Transition pressures, activation barriers and isothermal conductivities exhibit distinct changes of slope in their variation as a function of composition at about 8 at % of Te. Transition pressures change slope at not, vert, similar 35% Te also. An attempt has been made to explain these observations on the basis of the size effect of Te which, in turn, affects the electron energy dispersions in the band structure.

The changes in the tensile properties and fracture mode brought about by heat treatment of Fe-12Cr-6Al ferritic stainless steel have been studied. A favourable combination of high strength and good ductility is obtained by heating the material at 1370 K for 2 h followed by a water quench. The high-temperature treatment results in carbide dissolution as well as an increase in the grain size. The mechanism of strengthening has been evaluated from the apparent activation energy (28 kJ mol–1) and is identified to be the unpinning of dislocations from the atmosphere of carbon atoms. As the heat-treatment temperature is increased, the fracture behaviour changes from ductile to brittle mode and this is related to the changes in grain size and friction stress.

The electric field in certain electrostatic devices can be modeled by a grounded plate electrode affected by a corona discharge generated by a series of parallel wires connected to a DC high-voltage supply. The system of differential equations that describe the behaviour (i.e., charging and motion) of the conductive particle in such an electric field has been numerically solved, using several simplifying assumptions. Thus, it was possible to investigate the effect of various electrical and mechanical factors on the trajectories of conductive particles. This model has been employed to study the behaviour of coalparticles in fly-ash corona separators.

Differential scanning calorimetry, x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy have been employed to determine the thermal stability and identify the crystalline phases on devitrification of Metglas 2826 MB. The glass crystallizes intoγ-FeNiMo and fcc (FeNi)23B6 with activation energies of 270 and 375 kJ mol−1 respectively. The reactions are primary and polymorphic in nature. The influence of Mo towards crystallization of Fe40Ni40B20 has been to enhance the formation of the fcc (FeNi)23B6 phase in preference to orthorhombic (FeNi)3B phase and to raise the thermal stability of the amorphous state.

The question whether so-called ‘pure’ strains of yeast are cytologically pure ought to receive the earnest attention of those engaged in the study of the genetics of yeasts. The classification of yeasts is purely arbitrary, and the only reliable method of obtaining any particular species is to get a sample of the original culture. But even if the original culture is available one is not sure that it is cytologically pure, for proportion changes might have occurred in it since isolation. In rapidly growing organisms like the yeasts this is but natural. Investigations on higher plants indicate that polyploids usually mutate to dwarfness as a survival-measure and hence the random size relationships between the diploids and the polyploids offer no morphological criterion for differentiation into types.
