Conductance measurements of junctions between a high- superconductor and a metallic oxide have been carried out along the a-b plane to examine the tunnel-junction spectra. For these measurements, in situ films have been grown on c-axis oriented thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique. Two distinctive energy gaps have been observed along with conductance peaks around zero bias. The analysis of zero-bias conductance and energy gap data suggests the presence of midgap states located at the centre of a finite energy gap. The results obtained are also in accordance with the d-wave nature of high- superconductors.

Experimental results are presented of ionisation (a)a nd electron attachment ( v ) coefficients evaluated from the steady-state Townsend curregnrto wth curves for SFsN2 and CC12FrN2 mixtures over the range 60 S E/P 6 240 (where E is the electric field in V cm" and P is the pressure in Torr reduced to 20'C). In both the mixtures the attachment coefficients (vmu) evaluated were found to follow the relationship; where 7 is the attachment coefficient of pure electronegative gas, F is the fraction of the electronegative gas in the mixture and /3 is a constant. The ionisation coefficients (amlx) generally obeyed the relationship where w2a nd aAa re thei onisation coefficients of nitrogen and the attachinggraess pectively. However, in case of CC12FrN2 mixtures, there were maxima in the a,,,v,a,l ues for CCI2F2 concentrations varying between 10% and 30% at all values of E/P investigated. Effective ionisation coefficients (a - p)/P obtained in these binary mixtures show that the critical E/P (corresponding to (a - q)/P = 0) increases with increase in the concentration of the electronegative gas up to 40%. Further increase in the electronegative gas content does not seem to alter the critical E/P.

The paper present a spectral iteration technique for the analysis of linear arrays of unequally spaced dipoles of unequal lengths. As an example, the Yagi-Uda array is considered for illustration. Analysis is carried out in both the spatial as well as the spectral domains, the two being linked by the Fourier transform. The fast Fourier transform algorithm is employed to obtain an iterative solution to the electric field integral equation and the need for matrix inversion is circumvented. This technique also provides a convenient means for testing the satisfaction of the boundary conditions on the array elements. Numerical comparison of the input impedance and radiation pattern have been made with results deduced elsewhere by other methods. The computational efficency of this technique has been found to be significant for large arrays.

Photo-oxidation of α,β-unsaturated thiones yields the corresponding ketones as the only product. Studies carried out on three systems, namely thioketones, α,β-unsaturated thiones and thioketenes, have revealed that there exists a similarity in their mechanism of oxidation. It has been suggested that the thiocarbonyl chromophore is the site of attack by singlet oxygen in α,β-unsaturated thiones and that the adjacent C-C double bond is inert under these conditions. Absence of sulphine during the oxidation of α,β-unsaturated thiones is attributed to the electronic factors operating on the zwitterionic/diradical intermediate. While α,β-unsaturated ketones are poorly reactive, α,β-unsaturated thiones are highly reactive toward singlet oxygen.

The Landau damping of sound wave in a plasma consisting of an ensemble of magnetic flux tubes with reference to the work by Ryutov and Ryutova (1976) is discussed. Sound waves cannot be Landau damped in general but under certain restriction conditions on plasma parameters the possibility of absorption of these waves can exist.

Using the critical percolation conductance method the energy-dependent diffusion coefficient associated with thermally assisted transfer of the R1 line excitation between single Cr3+ ions with strain-induced randomness has been calculated in the 4A2 to E(2E) transition energies. For localized states sufficiently far away from the mobility edge the energy transfer is dominated by dipolar interactions, while very close to the mobility edge it is determined by short-range exchange interactions. Using the above energy-dependent diffusion coefficient a macroscopic diffusion equation is solved for the rate of light emission by Cr3+ ion-pair traps to which single-ion excitations are transferred. The dipolar mechanism leads to good agreement with recent measurements of the pair emission rate by Koo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol.35, p.1669 (1975)) right up to the mobility edge.

The density of states n(E) is calculated for a bound system whose classical motion is integrable, starting from an expression in terms of the trace of the time-dependent Green function. The novel feature is the use of action-angle variables. This has the advantages that the trace operation reduces to a trivial multiplication and the dependence of n(E) on all classical closed orbits with different topologies appears naturally. The method is contrasted with another, not applicable to integrable systems except in special cases, in which quantization arises from a single closed orbit which is assumed isolated and the trace taken by the method of stationary phase.

Plants are sessile organisms that have evolved a variety of mechanisms to maintain their cellular homeostasis under stressful environmental conditions. Survival of plants under abiotic stress conditions requires specialized group of heat shock protein machinery, belonging to Hsp70:J-protein family. These heat shock proteins are most ubiquitous types of chaperone machineries involved in diverse cellular processes including protein folding, translocation across cell membranes, and protein degradation. They play a crucial role in maintaining the protein homeostasis by reestablishing functional native conformations under environmental stress conditions, thus providing protection to the cell. J-proteins are co-chaperones of Hsp70 machine, which play a critical role by stimulating Hsp70s ATPase activity, thereby stabilizing its interaction with client proteins. Using genome-wide analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana, here we have outlined identification and systematic classification of J-protein co-chaperones which are key regulators of Hsp70s function. In comparison with Saccharomyces cerevisiae model system, a comprehensive domain structural organization, cellular localization, and functional diversity of A. thaliana J-proteins have also been summarized. We deal with a single conservation law with discontinuous convex-concave type fluxes which arise while considering sign changing flux coefficients. The main difficulty is that a weak solution may not exist as the Rankine-Hugoniot condition at the interface may not be satisfied for certain choice of the initial data. We develop the concept of generalized entropy solutions for such equations by replacing the Rankine-Hugoniot condition by a generalized Rankine-Hugoniot condition. The uniqueness of solutions is shown by proving that the generalized entropy solutions form a contractive semi-group in L-1. Existence follows by showing that a Godunov type finite difference scheme converges to the generalized entropy solution. The scheme is based on solutions of the associated Riemann problem and is neither consistent nor conservative. The analysis developed here enables to treat the cases of fluxes having at most one extrema in the domain of definition completely. Numerical results reporting the performance of the scheme are presented. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: The gene encoding for uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) is considered to be a candidate gene for type 2 diabetes because of its role in thermogenesis and energy expenditure. The objective of the study was to examine whether genetic variations in the UCP1 gene are associated with type 2 diabetes and its related traits in Asian Indians. Methods: The study subjects, 810 type 2 diabetic subjects and 990 normal glucose tolerant (NGT) subjects, were chosen from the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiological Study (CURES), an ongoing population-based study in southern India. The polymorphisms were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was estimated from the estimates of haplotypic frequencies. Results: The three polymorphisms, namely -3826A -> G, an A -> C transition in the 5'-untranslated region (UTR) and Met229Leu, were not associated with type 2 diabetes. However, the frequency of the A-C-Met (-3826A -> G-5'UTR A -> C-Met229Leu) haplotype was significantly higher among the type 2 diabetic subjects (2.67%) compared with the NGT subjects (1.45%, P < 0.01). The odds ratio for type 2 diabetes for the individuals carrying the haplotype A-C-Met was 1.82 (95% confidence interval, 1.29-2.78, P = 0.009). Conclusions: The haplotype, A-C-Met, in the UCP1 gene is significantly associated with the increased genetic risk for developing type 2 diabetes in Asian Indians.

Although Pb(Zr1-XTiX)O-3 solid solution is the cornerstone of the piezoelectric ceramics, there is no information in the literature on thermodynamic activities of the component phases in the solid solution. Using inter-crystalline ion exchange equilibria between Pb(Zr1-XTiX)O-3 solid solution with cubic perovskite structure and (Zr1-YTiY)O-2 solid solutions with monoclinic and tetragonal structures, activities of PbTiO3 and PbZrO3 in the perovskite solid solution have been derived at 1373 K using the modified Gibbs-Duhem integration technique of Jacob and Jeffes. Tie-lines from the cubic solid solution are skewed towards the ZrO2 corner. Activities in the zirconia-rich (Zr1-YTiY)02 solid solutions are taken from a recent emf study. The results for the perovskite solid solution at 1373 K can be represented by a sub-regular solution model: Delta G(E.M) (J mol(-1)) = X-PbTiO3 X-PbZrO3(5280X(PbTiO3) - 1980X(PbZrO3)) where Delta G(E.M) is the excess Gibbs energy of mixing of the cubic solid solution and Xi represents the mole fraction of component i. There is a significant positive deviation from ideality for PbTiO3-rich compositions and mild negative deviation near the PbZrO3 corner. The cubic solid solution is intrinsically stable against composition fluctuations at temperatures down to 840 K. The results contrast sharply with the recent calorimetric data on enthalpy of mixing which signal instability of the cubic perovskite solid solution. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Protein kinases phosphorylating Ser/Thr/Tyr residues in several cellular proteins exert tight control over their biological functions. They constitute the largest protein family in most eukaryotic species. Protein kinases classified based on sequence similarity in their catalytic domains, cluster into subfamilies, which share gross functional properties. Many protein kinases are associated or tethered covalently to domains that serve as adapter or regulatory modules, naiding substrate recruitment, specificity, and also serve as scaffolds. Hence the modular organisation of the protein kinases serves as guidelines to their functional and molecular properties. Analysis of genomic repertoires of protein kinases in eukaryotes have revealed wide spectrum of domain organisation across various subfamilies of kinases. Occurrence of organism-specific novel domain combinations suggests functional diversity achieved by protein kinases in order to regulate variety of biological processes. In addition, domain architecture of protein kinases revealed existence of hybrid protein kinase subfamilies and their emerging roles in the signaling of eukaryotic organisms. In this review we discuss the repertoire of non-kinase domains tethered to multi-domain kinases in the metazoans. Similarities and differences in the domain architectures of protein kinases in these organisms indicate conserved and unique features that are critical to functional specialization. De novo mass spectrometric sequencing of two Conus peptides, Vi1359 and Vi1361, from the vermivorous cone snail Conus virgo, found off the southern Indian coast, is presented. The peptides, whose masses differ only by 2 Da, possess two disulfide bonds and an amidated C-terminus. Simple chemical modifications and enzymatic cleavage coupled with matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometric analysis aided in establishing the sequences of Vi1359, ZCCITIPECCRI-NH2, and Vi1361, ZCCPTMPECCRI-NH2, Which differ only at residues 4 and 6 (Z = pyroglutamic acid). The presence of the pyroglutamyl residue at the N-terminus was unambiguously identified by chemical hydrolysis of the cyclic amide, followed by esterification. The presence of Ile residues in both the peptides was confirmed from high-energy collision induced dissociation (CID) studies, using the observation Of W-n- and d(n)-ions as a diagnostic. Differential cysteine labeling, in conjunction with MALDI-MS/MS, permitted establishment of disulfide connectivity in both peptides as Cys2-Cys9 and Cys3-Cys10. The cysteine pattern clearly reveals that the peptides belong to the class of T-superfamily conotoxins, in particular the T-1 superfamily.

Bis-bidentate Schiff base ligand L and its two mononuclear complexes [CuL(CH3CN)(2)]ClO4 (1)and [CuL(PPh3)(2)]ClO4 (2)have been prepared and thoroughly characterized by elemental analyses, IR, UV-Vis, NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. In both the complexes the metal ion auxiliaries adopt tetrahedral coordination environment. Their reactivity, electrochemical and photophysical behavior have been studied. Complex 1 shows reversible Cu-II/I couple with potential 0.74 V versus Ag/AgCl in CH2Cl2. At room temperature L is weakly fluorescent in CH2Cl2, however in Cu(I)complexes 1 and 2 the emission in quenched. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
