A brief account of the basic principle and methodologies of MRI technique, right from its beginning, are outlined. The final pulse sequence used for MRI using Fourier Imaging (phase encoding), Echo-Planar Imaging (EPI) for detection of a whole plane in a single excitation and T-1 and T-2 contrast enhancement is explained. The various associated methods such as, MR-spectroscopy, flow measurement (MRI-angiography), Lung-imaging using hyperpolarized Xe-129 and He-3 and functional imaging (f-MRI) are described.

We study the bound states of two spin-1/2 fermions interacting via a contact attraction (characterized by a scattering length) in the singlet channel in three-dimensional space in presence of a uniform non-Abelian gauge field. The configuration of the gauge field that generates a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction is described by three coupling parameters (lambda(x),lambda(y),lambda(z)). For a generic gauge field configuration, the critical scattering length required for the formation of a bound state is negative, i.e., shifts to the ``BCS side'' of the resonance. Interestingly, we find that there are special high-symmetry configurations (e.g., lambda(x) = lambda(y) = lambda(z)) for which there is a two-body bound state for any scattering length however small and negative. Remarkably, the bound-state wave functions obtained for such configurations have nematic spin structure similar to those found in liquid He-3. Our results show that the BCS-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover is drastically affected by the presence of a non-Abelian gauge field. We discuss possible experimental signatures of our findings both at high and low temperatures.

The crystal structure of the saccharide-free form of the basic form of winged-bean agglutinin (WBAI) has been solved by the molecular-replacement method and refined at 2.3 Angstrom resolution The final R factor is 19.74b for all data in the resolution range 8.0-2.3 Angstrom. The asymmetric unit contains two half-dimers, each located on a crystallographic twofold axis. The structure of the saccharide-free form is compared with that of the complex of WBAI wi th methyl-alpha-D-galactoside. The complex is composed of two dimers in the asymmetric unit. The intersubunit interactions in the dimer are nearly identical in the two structures The binding site of the saccharide-free structure contains three ordered water molecules at positions similar to those of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate which an hydrogen bonded to the protein. Superposition of the saccharide-binding sites of the two structures shows that the major changes involve expulsion of these ordered water molecules and a shift of about 0.6 Angstrom of the main-chain atoms of the variable loop.

The structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of nano zinc ferrite prepared by the propellant chemistry technique are studied. The PXRD measurement at room temperature reveal that the compound is in cubic spinel phase, belong to the space group Fd (3) over barm. The unit cell parameters have been estimated from Rietveld refinement. The calculated force constants from FTIR spectrum corresponding to octahedral and tetrahedral sites at 375 and 542 cm(-1) are 6.61 x 10(2) and 3.77 x 10(2) N m(-1) respectively; these values are slightly higher compared to the other ferrite systems. Magnetic hysteresis and EPR spectra show superparamagnetic property nearly to room temperature due to comparison values between magnetic anisotropy energy and the thermal energy. The calculated values of saturation magnetization, remenant magnetization, coercive field and magnetic moment supports for the existence of multi domain particles in the sample. The temperature dependent magnetic field shows the spin freezing state at 30 K and the blocking temperature at above room temperature. The frequency dependent dielectric interactions show the variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and impedance as similar to other ferrite systems. The AC conductivity in the prepared sample is due to the presence of electrons, holes and polarons. The synthesized material is suitable for nano-electronics and biomedical applications. He II photoelectron spectra of La, Ce and Yb show features which cannot be explained in terms of single electron excitations. It is proposed that these are due to formation of electron-hole paris.

Electronic absorption and emission spectra as well as He(I) photoelectron spectra of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-,3-cyclobutanedithione and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1-3-thio-1,3-cyclobutanedione have been interpreted on the basis of molecular orbital calculations. The results show that the non-bonded orbital of the dithione is split owing to through-bond interaction, the magnitude of splitting being 0.4 eV. The π* orbital of the dithione appears to be split by about 0.2 eV. Electronic absorption spectra show evidence for the existence of four n—π* transitions, arising out of the splitting of the orbitals referred to above, just as in the case of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanedione. Electronic and photoelectron spectra of the thio-dione show evidence for weak interaction between the C=S and C&.zdbnd;O groups, probably via π* orbitals. Infrared spectra of both the dithione and the thio-dione are consistent with the planar cyclobutane ring; the ring-puckering frequency responsible for non-bonded interactions is around 67 cm−1 in both the dithione and the thio-dione, the value not being very different from that in the dione. The 1,3-transannular distance is also similar in the three molecules.

1. Metabolites isolated from the urine of rats after oral administration of geraniol (I) were: geranic acid (II), 3-hydroxy-citronellic acid (III), 8-hydroxy-geraniol (IV), 8-carboxy-geraniol (V) and Hildebrandt acid (VI). 2. Metabolites isolated from urine of rats after oral administration of linalool (VII) were 8-hydroxy-linalool (VIII) and 8-carboxy-linalool (IX). 3. After three days of feeding rats with either geraniol or linalool, liver-microsomal cytochrome P-450 was increased. Both NADH- and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activities were not significantly changed during the six days of treatment. 4. Oral administration of these two terpenoids did not affect any of the lung-microsomal parameters measured.

Highly purified sheep lung cyclic-3',5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase was sensitive to Ca2+/EGTA but insensitive to exogenous calmodulin. The Ca2+-sensitivity was inhibited by trifluoperazine. Heat-treated enzyme could activate a calmodulin-deficient phosphodiesterase, suggesting the presence of endogenous calmodulin in sheep lung cyclic-3',5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase, possibly associated with the enzyme in a Ca2+-independent manner.

Ca2+-sensitivity of sheep lung cyclic-3',5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase is provided by endogenous tightly bound calmodulin. The calcium sensitivity of a highly purified enzyme was desensitized by increasing the assay temperature. It could also be desensitized to Ca2+-activation by thiols such as dithiothreitol. The thiol-induced desensitization could be partially reversed by dialysis and almost completely reversed by dilution. The results presented in this paper indicate that thiols are possibly involved in the interaction of calmodulin with cyclic-3',5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase. This is the first report on temperature and thiol-induced desensitization of Ca2+-sensitivity of a cyclic-3',5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase.

The He I photoelectron spectrum of the diethyl ether-ICl complex has been obtained. The oxygen orbitals are shifted to higher binding energies and that of ICl to lower binding energies owing to complex formation. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations of the complex molecule showed that the bonding is between the sigma-type lone pair of oxygen and the I atom and that the complex has C-2v symmetry. The binding energy of the complex is computed to be 8.06 kcal mol(-1) at the MP2/3-21G* level. The orbital energies obtained from the photoelectron spectra of the complex are compared and assigned with orbital energies obtained by MO calculations. Natural bond orbital analysis (NBO) shows that charge transfer is from the sigma-type oxygen lone pair to the iodine atom and the magnitude of charge transfer is 0.0744 e.
