We present results of photoluminescence spectroscopy and lifetime measurements on thin film hybrid arrays of semiconductor quantum dots and metal nanoparticles embedded in a block copolymer template. The intensity of emission as well as the measured lifetime would be controlled by varying the volume fraction and location of gold nanoparticles in the matrix. We demonstrate the ability to both enhance and quench the luminescence in the hybrids as compared to the quantum dot array films while simultaneously engineering large reduction in luminescence lifetime with incorporation of gold nanoparticles. Polyvinyl butyral/functionalized mesoporous silica hybrid composite films have been fabricated by solution casting technique with various weight percentages of functionalized silica. A polyol (tripentaerythritol-electron rich component), which acts as an electron donor to the polymer backbone, was added to enhance the conductivity. The prepared composites were characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and the morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. Dielectric properties of these freestanding composites were studied using the two-probe method. The dielectric constant and impedance value decreased with the increase in applied frequency as well as with the increase in functionalized silica content in the polyvinyl butyral matrix. An increase in conductivity of the PVB/functionalized silica composites was also observed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four new hybrid (bolaphile/amphiphile) ion-pairs were synthesized. Electron microscopy indicated that each of these forms bilayer membranes upon dispersion in aqueous media. Membrane properties have also been examined by differential scanning calorimetry, microcalorimetry, temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The T-m values for the vesicular 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were 38, 12, 85, 31.3, and 41.6 degrees C, respectively. Interestingly the T-m values for 1 and 3 were found to depend on their concentration. The entrapment of small solute and the release capability have also been examined to demonstrate that these bilayers form enclosed vesicles. X-ray diffraction of the cast films has been performed to understand the nature and the thickness of these membrane organizations. The membrane widths ranged from 33 to 47 Angstrom. Finally, the above observations have been analyzed in light of the results obtained from molecular modeling studies. Thus we have demonstrated that membrane properties can be modulated by simple structural changes at the amphiphile level. It was shown that by judicious incorporation of central, isomeric, disubstituted aromatic units as structural anchors into different bolaphiles, one can modulate the properties of the resulting vesicles.

Eight new open-framework inorganic-organic hybrid compounds based on indium have been synthesized employing hydrothermal methods. All of the compounds have InO6, C2O4, and HPO3/HPO4/SO4 units connected to form structures of different dimensionality Thus, the compounds have zero- (I), two- (II, III, IV, V, VII, and VIII), and three-dimensionally (VI) extended networks. The formation of the first zero-dimensional hybrid compound is noteworthy In addition, concomitant polymorphic structures have been observed in the present study. The molecular compound, I, was found to be reactive, and the transformation studies in the presence of a base (pyridine) give rise to the polymorphic structures of II and III, while the addition of an acid (H3PO3) gives rise to a new indium phosphite with a pillared layer structure (T1). Preliminary density functional theory calculations suggest that the stabilities of the polymorphs are different, with one of the forms (II) being preferred over the other, which is consistent with the observed experimental behavior. The oxalate units perform more than one role in the present structures. Thus, the oxalate units connect two In centers to satisfy the coordination requirements as well as to achieve charge balance in compounds II, IV, and VI. The terminal oxalate units observed in compounds I, IV, and V suggest the possibility of intermediate structures. Both in-plane and out-of-plane connectivity of the oxalate units were observed in compound VI. The 31 compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and P-31 NMR studies.

The conformation, organization, and phase transitions of alkyl chains in organic-inorganic hybrids based on the double pervoskite-slab lead iodides, (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 (n = 11, 13, 15, 17) have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, and infrared vibrational spectroscopy. In these hybrid solids, double pervoskite (CH3NH3)Pb2I7 slabs are interleaved with alkyl ammonium chains with the anchored alkyl chains arranged as tilted bilayers and adopting a planar all-trans conformation at room temperature. The (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 compounds exhibit a single reversible phase transition above room temperature with the associated enthalpy change varying linearly with alkyl chain length. This transition corresponds to the melting in two-dimensions of the alkyl chains of the anchored bilayer and is characterized by increased conformational disorder of the methylene units of the chain and loss of tilt angle coherence leading to an increase in the interslab spacing. By monitoring features in the infrared spectra that are characteristic of the global conformation of the alkyl chains, a quantitative relation between conformational disorder and melting of the anchored bilayer is established. It is found that, irrespective of the alkyl chain length, melting occurs when at least 60% of the chains in the anchored bilayer of (CH3NH3)(CH3(CH2)(n)NH3)(2)Pb2I7 have one or more gauche defects. This concentration is determined by the underlying lattice to which the alkyl chains are anchored.

A novel synthesis of inorganic-organic hybrid films containing well dispersed and almost uniform size Ag nanoparticles in agar-agar matrix has been reported. The films are found to be highly stable for more than a year. The colloidal particles of Ag can be obtained in large quantities in the form of a film or in the gel form when dispersed in agar-agar or by dissolving in a suitable solvent as solution. Characterization has been done by UV-visible spectroscopy and TEM. The hybrid may be of interest to study third-order non-linear susceptibility.

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were decorated with crystalline zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) by wet chemical route to form MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid. The hybrid sample was characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrical conductivity of the hybrid can be tuned by varying the ZnO NPs content in the hybrid. In order to investigate the effect of nanoparticles loading on the conduction of MWCNTs network, electrical conductivity studies have been carried out in the wide temperature range 1.5-300K. The electrical conductivity of the hybrid below 100K is explained with the combination of variable range hopping conduction and thermal fluctuation induced tunnelling model. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Three new phosphonoacetate hybrid frameworks based on the actinide elements uranium and thorium have been synthesized. The compounds [C4N2H14][(UO2)(2)(O3PCH2COO)(2)]center dot H2O, I,[C4N2H14][(UO2)(2)(C2O4)(O3PCH2COOH)(2)], II, and Th(H2O)(2)(O3PCH2COO)(C2O4)(0.5). H2O, III, are built up from the connectivity between the metal polyhedra and the phosphonoacetate/oxalate units. Compound II has been prepared using a solvent-free approach, by a solid state reaction at 150 degrees C. It has been shown that II can also be prepared through a room temperature mechanochemical (grinding) route. The layer arrangement in III closely resembles to that observed in I. The compounds have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and fluorescence studies.

Molybdenum-doped TiO2 organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions by in situ surface modification using n-butylamine. This was carried out at 150 degrees C at autogeneous pressure over 18 h. n-Butylamine was selected as a surfactant since it produced nanoparticles of the desired size and shape. The products were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, dynamic light-scattering spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Chemical oxygen demand was estimated in order to determine the photodegradation efficiency of the molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles in the treatment of pharmaceutical effluents. It was found that molybdenum-doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles showed higher photocatalytic efficiency than untreated TiO2 nanoparticles.

Photocatalytic degradation of municipal wastewater was investigated using reagent grade TiO2 and modified neodymium doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles. For the first time, surface modification of Nd3+ doped TiO2 hybrid nanoparticles were carried out with n-butylamine as surface modifier under mild hydrothermal conditions. The modified nanoparticles obtained were characterized by Powder XRD, FTIR, DLS, TEM, BET surface area, zeta potential and UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated better morphology, particle size distribution and low agglomeration of the nanoparticles synthesized. It was found that photodegradation of wastewater using surface modified neodymium doped TiO2 nanoparticles was more compared to pure TiO2, which can be attributed to the doping and modification with n-butylamine.

ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were grown on the surface of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by a wet chemical synthesis route. The anchoring of ZnO NPs on acid-treated MWCNTs was achieved under remarkably mild reaction conditions (low temperature, atmospheric pressure, without any capping agents and no need for subsequent thermal annealing). MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid samples with varying loading of ZnO NPs are prepared. A very high degree of dispersion of ZnO NPs over the surface of MWCNT was achieved by suitably controlling the ratio of ZnO NPs and MWCNTs in the solution. The hybrid sample was characterized by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Transmission electron microscope images of the as-prepared MWCNT/ZnO NPs hybrid reveal that mono-dispersed ZnO NPs are anchored stably on functionalized MWCNTs. The interaction of ZnO NPs with MWCNT surface was interpreted through XPS analysis.

In this paper we discuss the different models proposed to explain the visible luminescence in porous silicon (PS). We review our recent photoluminescence and Raman studies on PS as a function of different preparation conditions and isochronal thermal annealing. Our results can be explained by a hybrid model which incorporates both nanostructures for quantum confinement and silicon complexes (such as SiHx, and siloxene) and defects at Si/SiO2, interfaces as luminescent centres.

A modified solution combustion technique was successfully used to synthesize sub-10 nm crystallites of hybrid CeO(2)-Al(2)O(3)-CeAlO(3). The fuel in the solution combustion was tuned to obtain mixed oxides and solid solutions of the compound. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. XRD and TEM analysis showed the substitution of Al(3+) ions in the CeO(2) matrix when a combination of glycine, urea, hexamine and oxalyl dihydrazide was used as fuel for the synthesis. The compounds showed high activity for CO oxidation and the activity of the compounds was dependent upon the composition of the oxide.

In this work composites of poly(3-hexylethiophene) (P3HT) and a thiophene derivative (7, 9-di (thiophen-2-yl)-8H-cyclopenta[a]acenaphthylen-8-one) (DTCPA) having donor acceptor architecture (DAD) were prepared. Photovoltaic properties of these hybrid composites were evaluated. DTCPA, which is a highly crystalline organic molecule with wide absorption range, was observed to improve the open circuit voltage of the solar cell. Furthermore, DTCPA crystals acts as a nucleating center and increases the molecular ordering of P3HT in the composite. Improved charge separation efficiency was observed by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Because of high built in potential in these devices, large open circuit voltage was observed. The effect of gem-dialkyl substituents on the backbone conformations of beta-amino acid residues in peptides has been investigated by using four model peptides: Boc-Xxx-beta 2,2Ac6c(1-aminomethylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (1), Phe (2); Boc=tert-butyloxycarbonyl) and Boc-Xxx-beta 3,3Ac6c(1-aminocyclohexaneacetic acid)-NHMe (Xxx=Leu (3), Phe (4)). Tetrasubstituted carbon atoms restrict the ranges of stereochemically allowed conformations about flanking single bonds. The crystal structure of Boc-Leu-beta 2,2Ac6c-NHMe (1) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn in the a beta-hybrid sequence. The observed torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to-30 degrees), beta(similar to-90 degrees, similar to 60 degrees, similar to-90 degrees)) corresponded to a C11 helical turn, which was a backbone-expanded analogue of the type III beta turn in aa sequences. The crystal structure of the peptide Boc-Phe-beta 3,3Ac6c-NHMe (4) established a C11 hydrogen-bonded turn with distinctly different backbone torsion angles (a(similar to-60 degrees, similar to 120 degrees), beta(similar to 60 degrees, ?60 degrees, similar to-60 degrees)), which corresponded to a backbone-expanded analogue of the type II beta turn observed in aa sequences. In peptide 4, the two molecules in the asymmetric unit adopted backbone torsion angles of opposite signs. In one of the molecules, the Phe residue adopted an unfavorable backbone conformation, with the energetic penalty being offset by a favorable aromatic interaction between proximal molecules in the crystal. NMR spectroscopy studies provided evidence for the maintenance of folded structures in solution in these a beta-hybrid sequences.
