The nonlinear optical response of a current-carrying single molecule coupled to two metal leads and driven by a sequence of impulsive optical pulses with controllable phases and time delays is calculated. Coherent (stimulated, heterodyne) detection of photons and incoherent detection of the optically induced current are compared. Using a diagrammatic Liouville space superoperator formalism, the signals are recast in terms of molecular correlation functions which are then expanded in the many-body molecular states. Two dimensional signals in benzene-1,4-dithiol molecule show cross peaks involving charged states. The correlation between optical and charge current signal is also observed. Experiments in spintronics necessarily involve the detection of spin polarization. The sensitivity of this detection becomes an important factor to consider when extending the low temperature studies on semiconductor spintronic devices to room temperature, where the spin signal is weaker. In pump-probe experiments, which optically inject and detect spins, the sensitivity is often improved by using a photoelastic modulator (PEM) for lock-in detection. However, spurious signals can arise if diode lasers are used as optical sources in such experiments, along with a PEM. In this work, we eliminated the spurious electromagnetic coupling of the PEM onto the probe diode laser, by the double modulation technique. We also developed a test for spurious modulated interference in the pump-probe signal, due to the PEM. Besides, an order of magnitude enhancement in the sensitivity of detection of spin polarization by Kerr rotation, to 3x10(-8) rad was obtained by using the concept of Allan variance to optimally average the time series data over a period of 416 s. With these improvements, we are able to experimentally demonstrate at room temperature, photoinduced steady-state spin polarization in bulk GaAs. Thus, the advances reported here facilitate the use of diode lasers with a PEM for sensitive pump-probe experiments. They also constitute a step toward detection of spin-injection in Si at room temperature.

We propose and demonstrate a technique for electrical detection of polarized spins in semiconductors in zero applied magnetic fields. Spin polarization is generated by optical injection using circularly polarized light which is modulated rapidly using an electro-optic cell. The modulated spin polarization generates a weak time-varying magnetic field which is detected by a sensitive radio-frequency coil. Using a calibrated pickup coil and amplification electronics, clear signals were obtained for bulk GaAs and Ge samples from which an optical spin orientation efficiency of 4.8% could be determined for Ge at 1342 nm excitation wavelength. In the presence of a small external magnetic field, the signal decayed according to the Hanle effect, from which a spin lifetime of 4.6 +/- 1.0 ns for electrons in bulk Ge at 127 K was extracted.

A Monte Carlo model of ultrasound modulation of multiply scattered coherent light in a highly scattering media has been carried out for estimating the phase shift experienced by a photon beam on its transit through US insonified region. The phase shift is related to the tissue stiffness, thereby opening an avenue for possible breast tumor detection. When the scattering centers in the tissue medium is exposed to a deterministic forcing with the help of a focused ultrasound (US) beam, due to the fact that US-induced oscillation is almost along particular direction, the direction defined by the transducer axis, the scattering events increase, thereby increasing the phase shift experienced by light that traverses through the medium. The phase shift is found to increase with increase in anisotropy g of the medium. However, as the size of the focused region which is the region of interest (ROI) increases, a large number of scattering events take place within the ROI, the ensemble average of the phase shift (Delta phi) becomes very close to zero. The phase of the individual photon is randomly distributed over 2 pi when the scattered photon path crosses a large number of ultrasound wavelengths in the focused region. This is true at high ultrasound frequency (1 MHz) when mean free path length of photon l(s) is comparable to wavelength of US beam. However, at much lower US frequencies (100 Hz), the wavelength of sound is orders of magnitude larger than l(s), and with a high value of g (g 0.9), there is a distinct measurable phase difference for the photon that traverses through the insonified region. Experiments are carried out for validation of simulation results.

Two isomorphous submicron sized metal-organic network compounds, Y-2(PDA)(3)(H2O)1]center dot 2H(2)O (PDA = 1,4-phenylenediacetate), 1 and Y1.8Tb0.2(PDA)(3)(H2O)1]center dot 2H(2)O, Tb@1 have been synthesized by employing solvent assisted liquid grinding followed by heating at 180 degrees C for 1' min and washing with water. Single crystal X-ray data of bulk 1 confirmed a three dimensional porous structure. The structure and morphology of 1 and Tb@1 were systematically characterized by PXRD, TGA, DSC, IR, SEM and EDX analysis. Dehydrated Tb@1 Tb@1'] shows a high intense visible green emission upon exposure to UV light. The green emission of Tb@1' was used for the detection of nitro explosives, such as 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 1,3-dinitro benzene (DNB), 2,4-dinitro toluene (DNT), nitro benzene (NB), and 4-nitro toluene (NT) in acetonitrile. The results show that the emission intensity of dehydrated Tb@1' can be quenched by all the nitro analytes used in the present work. Remarkably, Tb@1' exhibited a high efficiency for TNP, DNB and DNT detection with K-SV K-SV = quenching constant based on linear Stern-Volmer plot] values of 70 920, 44 000 and 35 430 M-1, respectively, which are the highest values amongst known metal-organic materials. Using this material submicromolar level (equivalent to 0.18 ppm), a detection of nitro explosives has been achieved.

An accurate and highly sensitive sensor platform has been demonstrated for the detection of C-reactive protein (CRP) using optical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The CRP detection has been carried out by monitoring the shift in Bragg wavelength (Delta lambda(B)) of an etched FBG (eFBG) coated with an anti-CRP antibody (aCRP)-graphene oxide (GO) complex. The complex is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. A limit of detection of 0.01 mg/L has been achieved with a linear range of detection from 0.01 mg/L to 100 mg/L which includes clinical range of CRP. The eFBG sensor coated with only aCRP (without GO) show much less sensitivity than that of aCRP-GO complex coated eFBG. The eFBG sensors show high specificity to CRP even in the presence of other interfering factors such as urea, creatinine and glucose. The affinity constant of similar to 1.1 x 10(10) M-1 has been extracted from the data of normalized shift (Delta lambda(B)/lambda(B)) as a function of CRP concentration. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. A highly sensitive and specific reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (RT-PCR-ELISA) was developed for the objective detection of nucleoprotein (N) gene of peste des petits ruminants (PPR) virus from field outbreaks or experimentally infected sheep. Two primers (IndF and Np4) and one probe (Sp3) available or designed for the amplification/probing of the 'N' gene of PPR virus, were chosen for labeling and use in RT-PCR-ELISA based on highest analytical sensitivity of detection of infective virus or N-gene containing recombinant plasmid, higher nucleotide homology at the primer binding sites of the 'N' gene sequences available and the ability to amplify PPR viral genome from different sources of samples. RT-PCR was performed with unlabeled IndF and Np4 digoxigenin labeled primers followed by a microplate hybridization probe reaction with biotin labeled Sp3 probe. RT-PCR-ELISA was found to be 10-fold more sensitive than the conventional RT-PCR followed by agarose gel based detection of PCR product. Based on the Mean (mean +/- 3S.D.) optical density (OD) values of 47 RT-PCR negative samples, OD values above 0.306 were considered positive in RT-PCR-ELISA. A total of 82 oculo-nasal swabs and tissue samples from suspected PPR cases were analyzed by RT-PCR and RT-PCR-ELISA, which revealed 54.87 and 58.54% positivity, respectively. From an experimentally infected sheep, both RT-PCR and RT-PCR-ELISA could detect the virus from 6 days post-infection up to 9 days in oculo-nasal swabs. On post-mortem, PPR viral genome was detected in spleen, lymph node, lung, heart and liver. The correlation co-efficient between RT-PCR-ELISA OD values and either TCID50 of virus or molecules of DNA was 0.622 and 0.657, respectively. The advantages of RT-PCR-ELISA over the conventional agarose gel based detection of RT-PCR products are discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An experimental setup has been realized to measure weak magnetic moments which can be modulated at radio frequencies (similar to 1-5 MHz). Using an optimized radio-frequency (RF) pickup coil and lock-in amplifier, an experimental sensitivity of 10(-15) Am(2) corresponding to 10(-18) emu has been demonstrated with a 1 s time constant. The detection limit at room temperature is 9.3 x 10(-16) Am(2)/root Hz limited by Johnson noise of the coil. The setup has been used to directly measure the magnetic moment due to a small number (similar to 7 x 10(8)) of spin polarized electrons generated by polarization modulated optical radiation in GaAs and Ge. Herein we report a novel fluoranthene-based fluorescent fluorophore 7,10-bis(4-bromophenyl)-8,9-bis4-(hexyloxy)phenyl]fluoranthene (S-3) and its remarkable properties in applications of explosive detection. The sensitivity towards the detection of nitroaromatics (NACs) was evaluated through fluorescence quenching in solution, vapor, and contact mode approaches. The contact mode approach using thin-layer silica chromatograp- hic plates exhibited a femtogram (1.15 fg cm(-2)) detection limit for trinitrotoluene (TNT) and picric acid (PA), whereas the solution-phase quenching showed PA detection at the 2-20 ppb level. Fluorescence lifetime measurements revealed that the quenching is static in nature and the quenching process is fully reversible. Binding energies between model binding sites of the S-3 and analyte compounds reveal that analyte molecules enter into the cavity created by substituted phenyl rings of fluoranthene and are stabilized by strong intermolecular interactions with alkyl chains. It is anticipated that the sensor S-3 could be a promising material for the construction of portable optical devices for the detection of onsite explosive nitroaromatics.

A series of fluoranthene derivatives (F1-F5) varied with nature and type of substituents were synthesized via Diels-Alder reaction followed by in situ decarbonylation. The solid state structures have been established through single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). The presence of extended conjugation and having two alkyloxy chains on phenyl rings induces flexibility to orient opposite to each other and interacts with another fluoranthene unit with weak pi-pi interactions and show unique supramolecular arrangements. The envisaged photophysical and DFT studies demonstrated that HOMO-LUMO levels were effectively tuned by different substituents with an optical band gap from 3.44 to 3.88 eV provoked to examine as sensitive fluorescent chemosensors for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). The sensitivity toward the detection of NACs was evaluated through fluorescence quenching in solution (aqueous and non-aqueous) and solid state (vapor and contact mode). Fluorescence studies demonstrated that electron transfer occurs from the electron rich fluoranthene fluorophores to the electron deficient NACs by the dominant static quenching mechanism and the quenching process is reversible. It was found that the detection sensitivity increases with extent of conjugation on fluoranthene unit. The contact mode approach using thin layer silica chromatographic plates exhibits a femtogram (1.15 fg/cm(2)) detection limit for trinitrotoluene (TNT) and picric acid (PA), while the solution state fluorescence quenching shows for PA detection at the 2-20 ppb level. The sensing performance of fluoranthene thin films to NACs in aqueous solution reveals that fluorophores are highly selective towards the detection of PA. The smart performances of thin film fluorophores with high photostability have great advantage than those of conjugated polymers with superior sensitive detection of PA in groundwater.

A wave propagation based approach for the detection of damage in components of structures having periodic damage has been proposed. Periodic damage pattern may arise in a structure due to periodicity in geometry and in loading. The method exploits the Block-Floquet band formation mechanism, a feature specific to structures with periodicity, to identify propagation bands (pass bands) and attenuation bands (stop bands) at different frequency ranges. The presence of damage modifies the wave propagation behaviour forming these bands. With proper positioning of sensors a damage force indicator (DFI) method can be used to locate the defect at an accuracy level of sensor to sensor distance. A wide range of transducer frequency may be used to obtain further information about the shape and size of the damage. The methodology is demonstrated using a few 1-D structures with different kinds of periodicity and damage. For this purpose, dynamic stiffness matrix is formed for the periodic elements to obtain the dispersion relationship using frequency domain spectral element and spectral super element method. The sensitivity of the damage force indicator for different types of periodic damages is also analysed.

Stiffener is one of the major components of aircraft structures to increase the load carrying capacity. Damage in the stiffener, mostly in the form of crack is an unavoidable problem in aerospace structures. Stiffener is bonded to the inner side of the aircraft panel which is not accessible for immediate inspection. A sensor-actuator network can be placed on the outer side of the panel that is accessible. Ultrasonic lamb waves are transmitted through stiffener using the sensoractuator network for detecting the presence of damages. The sensor-actuator network is placed on both halves of the stiffened section on the accessible surface of the plate. Detecting damage in stiffener by using this technique has significant potential for SHM technology. One of the major objectives of the present work is to determine the smallest detectable crack on the stiffener using the proposed technique. Wavelet based damage parameter correlation studies are carried out. In the proposed scheme, with increase in the damage size along the stiffener, it is found that the amplitude of the received signal decreases monotonically. The advantage of this technique is that the stiffened panels need not be disassembled in a realistic deployment of SHM system.

Detection of pathogens from infected biological samples through conventional process involves cell lysis and purification. The main objective of this work is to minimize the time and sample loss, as well as to increase the efficiency of detection of biomolecules. Electrical lysis of medical sample is performed in a closed microfluidic channel in a single integrated platform where the downstream analysis of the sample is possible. The device functions involve, in a sequence, flow of lysate from lysis chamber passed through a thermal denaturation counter where dsDNA is denatured to ssDNA, which is controlled by heater unit. A functionalized binding chamber of ssDNA is prepared by using ZnO nanorods as the matrix and functionalized with bifunctional carboxylic acid, 16-(2-pyridyldithiol) hexadecanoic acid (PDHA) which is further attached to a linker molecule 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) (EDC). Linker moeity is then covalently bound to photoreactive protoporphyrin (PPP) molecule. The photolabile molecule protoporphyrin interacts with -NH2 labeled single stranded DNA (ssDNA) which thus acts as a probe to detect complimentary ssDNA from target organisms. Thereafter the bound DNA with protoporphyrin is exposed to an LED of particular wavelength for a definite period of time and DNA was eluted and analyzed. UV/Vis spectroscopic analysis at 260/280 nm wavelength confirms the purity and peak at 260 nm is reconfirmed for the elution of target DNA. Quantitative and qualitative data obtained from the current experiments show highly selective detection of biomolecule such as DNA which have large number of future applications in Point-of-Care devices.

Quantifying and characterising atomic defects in nanocrystals is difficult and low-throughput using the existing methods such as high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). In this article, using a defocused wide-field optical imaging technique, we demonstrate that a single ultrahigh-piezoelectric ZnO nanorod contains a single defect site. We model the observed dipole-emission patterns from optical imaging with a multi-dimensional dipole and find that the experimentally observed dipole pattern and model-calculated patterns are in excellent agreement. This agreement suggests the presence of vertically oriented degenerate-transition-dipoles in vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. The HRTEM of the ZnO nanorod shows the presence of a stacking fault, which generates a localised quantum well induced degenerate-transition-dipole. Finally, we elucidate that defocused wide-field imaging can be widely used to characterise defects in nanomaterials to answer many difficult questions concerning the performance of low-dimensional devices, such as in energy harvesting, advanced metal-oxide-semiconductor storage, and nanoelectromechanical and nanophotonic devices.
